Are we witnessing something RARE with the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Jokic? | The Athletic NBA Show

  1. On the drafting, the Nuggets are in the envious position of already having their stars, and in the middle of their primes. So they aren’t looking for stars, they are looking for role players. That means they are drafting for high floors rather than high ceilings. The success rate on a high floor prospect, by definition, is much MUCH higher than hitting on a high ceiling prospect. The thing they did was to recognise that and commit.

  2. The only way they will lose is if the referees are told by the organization not to favor them or the money they are willing to give or lose. I personally like the joker he has replaced to me pistol Pete as my favorite player.

  3. Really nice content. Not pretentious but also not a clown show. Never make it on main stream sports media.

  4. Every season for the last 5 I’ve thought he couldn’t get any better… because each year he’s gotten better it’s meant something staggering in terms of his historical talent.

  5. AG btw is actually averaging more points now than even when he was just on the Magic. Needless to say on significantly better efficiency.

  6. Even Nuggets fans were holding their breath a little about the bench. Young guys so often don't pan out and Malone has a well earned reputation for not playing young players even when they're good. Not only have the young guys played well but Malone has trusted some of them with rotation minutes this early in the year. Growth on his part as a coach. With Reggie Jackson playing well and Christian Braun, Payton Watson (an athletic freak), Strawther and even Nnaji holding his own the Nuggets are legitimately 10 deep for the regular season. Murray will likely be out for 3 weeks or a month so these guys will be battle tested.

  7. Its not because ownership is being cheap??? They made a philosophical switch because of cap rules on the horizon.

  8. To be clear, when it comes to Bruce Brown, because of the rules around the mud level exception, the Nuggets were literally not allowed to match what the Pacers offered him. Given how big the offer was I doubt they would have matched it even if they could, but they were literally not allowed to offer

  9. Very rare because you have a point center which has never happened before.Jokic is a combination of Larry Bird and Tim Duncan🏀🏀🏀

  10. Im not bored watching Jokic. I became a fan of Nuggets when I saw him play against Boston in my Television. I was shocked how he play. When he is on the floor. The Nuggets team is so different.

Damn I was like, is this for real? I enjoyed watching the Nuggets if Jokic play. But without him. I was like wheres the play making? Wheres the floor general?

  11. If The NBA and Adam Silver was smart, he would Promote Jokic ( Luka ) as the face of the NBA, not thugs like Ja' ,,,outside watching the European players, the NBA has turned into 1 big Rap video, and race baters with NBA and Perk..

  12. The most impressive thing about how the Nuggets are built is that in the last 5 years they've only had late draft picks and the only assets they've really given up in trades were Gary Harris and R.J Hampton for Gordon, and Morris and Barton for KCP which both have been perfect fits for the team and their contracts are at an exceptional value. Almost forgot, they also gave a 1st for Jerami Grant which was also worth it.

Many teams try making big moves, so they make trades that cost them promising players and several draft picks. So even if the player they traded for works out great, it ends up leaving the team depleted a few years down the line. They may also rely on overpaying free agents in order to draw them in. Lastly, most teams don't have a good eye for scouting talent if it's not in the top picks.

The Nuggets have made smart trades, bring it free agents with contracts at a great value(Millsap might have been the only overpay, which was still acceptable considering where the team was at the time) and regularly find productive players in the late 1st round and 2nd round. They also reward their own picks with contracts before trying to replace them with free agents, and are willing to move players who aren't getting enough playing time if they request. This makes young players play hard, knowing they will get rewarded with an extension or be allowed to go to another team with more opportunity.
