Path to Championship Contention

I am absolutely loving this team, and think we have surpassed expectations so far. I think we have a great core group that will succeed. However, I don’t see the current lineup being contenders.

My thoughts are this – we need at least 1, maybe two stars to complement our current All Star and our fantastic role players. I could see Bennedict becoming a future star in the next 2-3 years, and Jarace becoming a future star in 5-7 years… but what if we could contend next year?

I think we should make a push for Lauri Markkanen in trades this break/offseason and try to sign PG back. We have the assets to make a very compelling offer to the Jazz, and PG has mentioned his love of Indiana and Haliburton.

It would definitely take some cap finagling, tax hits, restructuring contracts or letting favorites go, but I think a starting lineup of Haliburton – Mathurin – PG – Markkanen – Turner and a bench of McConnell – Brown/Hield – Nesmith – Toppin – Smith is 100% a contender.

Thoughts?

I want nothing to do with PG. He can be injury prone in LA.

I think we’re being overly zealous. Easiest comparison in my mind is the Celtics. Good young core that did better than expected early. Continued to develop every year.

Everyone wants to rush as soon as we start looking good. Be patient, let our guys develop, get some playoff experience. Then let the staff assess the situation and make a move to take the next step.

trading with the Jazz is a huge no-no in the NBA. they would want way too much for him and ultimately they are building around Lauri. PG fits perfectly here which is really unfortunate considering his age and health. we also have approximately 0 assets to use to get another star, which is a huge problem because no one wants to go to Indy no matter how much we are willing to pay for him. i got clowned for saying we needed a second guy. we do, but it really would be impossible without at least giving up Benn.

The problem is that PG would be perfect at the 4 spot but he hates playing the 4
