As someone who plays the game, it’s not as bad as it looks, and an 86 overall is pretty decent. There’s only 17 players in the whole NBA who are 90 and over. I believe 86 puts him in the top 30 players… Which is pretty high praise for Scottie!
I’d say his shooting is accurate. People with an 80 3pt rating are solid shooters but not quite snipers, which is where I’d put Scottie currently. His physicals are solid, his finishing seems a little light, but it’s still 80+ which makes him top rated and his defending is solid too. His playmaking is amazing for a big man.
One thing you have to understand is that the stats are rated from guard to big. So you might look at Scottie’s passing stat and say “77? He’s a great passer, it should be higher!” But for his size, that is a great passer. Likewise when you look at his speed and say “Shouldn’t he be faster than 82 speed?” But you have to understand for his size, that’s fast. That size, that speed plus his block means Scottie can defend the paint like a blanket.
The things that do not seem accurate are his rebounding and his steals rating. He had 5 steals last night which does not represent a 53 steal. And his rebounding stats are much better than a 62/75. I suspect this is a case where having the rebounding of Poeltl and Siakam is lowering Scottie’s rebounding rating. It’s not fair, but in some ways the stats are influenced by the team, not the player.
