Boston Celtics get burned by bad play, lose to Charlotte Hornets in OT

The Celtics once again played with their food, building up leads but not doing the little things they needed to do to put the Hornets away. They blew a nine point lead with two minutes to go and lost in overtime. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal gets into why this game could mean nothing and everything at the same time, and also runs through some of the bigger issues in this game (giving up offensive rebounds, tough nights from Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, and Sam Hauser).

  1. I love how only 1 person in the comments blamed this on Jaylen Brown… This loss was 75% Jaylen Browns fault. Imagine if we had other roleplayers or a star for $300,000,000

  2. Thnx for trying to be positive John. Celtics just gave up toward the end which allowed the hornets to bring it close and then finally win. Nothing irritates me more than bottom feeder teams punching above their weight in try hard mode. But when you take your foot off the gas these things happen

  3. Jrue Holiday and Marcus Smart are the same guy. They both are elite defenders who have streaky shooting who call their own number a lot and sometimes make bad decisions. There is one key difference – Jrue gets more rebounds and Marcus is a better passer. I think if all the Marcus Smart haters watched Jrue Holiday with their Marcus Smart lenses on they would be surprised to see a dude with similar flaws. This is not a knock to Jrue Holiday because I actually think Marcus is a good player. However, I’m kind of tired of this “Jrue Holiday is such an upgrade from Smart” narrative when, so far, he’s really just kind of the same. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  4. What does Joe Mazzulla do??? How do you let your team blow a 18 point lead to the bum Hornets?! Celtics are better off shooting a half court shot game winner than running what ever Joe draws up/scribbles on the sideline…tie game, you call a timeout and the best play you could draw u was Tatum catching the ball 3 feet away from the inbounder, watch him get double teamed and then throw it to Hauser who was 1-8 from 3 to force up a 3?!?!

  5. The Celtic shot 16 of 50 from the three points line, they just kept launching 3's. they win NEVER win a chmapionship like that and it's Lazy baskeball, and I put it on the coach.

  6. I think it was just fatigue, Joe should’ve just kept the bench in more in that 4th quarter, the bench were outplaying the starters except for JT in the 4th Quarter they just didn’t look to focused or into this game, loses will happen, but definitely looking forward to Wednesday vs the Bucks, Lets Go Celtics 🍀🍀🍀🏆🏆🏆

  7. I hate then we lost this games and they are like not yo worry. Bs I'm worried that this team under permforms against weak teams is not acceptable cause it happend to often

  8. JB has got to stop chucking up so many threes and work closer to the hoop. He's just not that good of a 3 baller – he's too streaky. JT mixed in more post play and midrange and look at the step forward he made. And the funny thing is he's pretty unstoppable in the mid range. Not to mention cutting to the hoop – look out! Still playing that stupid Mazulla ball – any three taken is a good three – and the more the merrier. Even Mazulla is slowly ( reluctantly I would guess but maybe I'm being unfair) opening his mind to more variety in his offense. But it does look like JB is still trying to figure out his best place in this year's offense and it's different and better as a team than last year. But he's still defaulting too frequently to Jay's play hero ball your turn my turn. Think it's the contract? When JB stops chucking and starts working more like Jimmy Butler and focuses on his strengths and doesn't try to be some one he's not he will be even more awesome. And the 2 man game with Porzingas is looking great – more if that!

  9. John you made some very insightful points about using other options that Mazzulla seems to overlook.
There are some things that were glaring to me: Why was it necessary to play Tatum for 44 minutes against an inferior team? Yes, he was having a good game on a back to back but look what happened: He seemed not be as sharp in the second half possibly due to fatigue; What if Tatum got hurt playing all those minutes?, and of course the other guys did not get enough touches to stay in rhythm.
When is Mazzulla going to utilize a 2 man game rather than electing to go iso in those tough moments? What happen to employing the "change up like a curve ball in baseball, that Mazzulla spoke about having KP in the mix now? KP is not getting enough touches to stay engaged offensively. He is out of rhythm…those missed shots would have had a better chance of going in if he was more active in the offense.. Why isn't he used to rotate the ball from the top of the key to get some touches….he is proving to be a good passer. Why was Hauser in the game for 37 minutes producing 3 pts and 1 reb instead of giving an other reserve an opportunity to impact the game? I like Mazzulla but I see the same things that didn't get us over the hump in the playoffs. The players could have done better but Mazzulla needs to do better as well, particularly with mismatcess when we have an offensive gugernut at 7'3. Mazzulla needs to employ other things than the run n gun and iso ball options.

  10. The C's should have played the bench more to get the starter minutes down. It's OK to lose 25 games a season. Health is paramount entering the playoffs. Actually, bringing the (tired) starters back in broke our rhythm in the second quarter and allowed the Hornets back in the game. Tatum's ego is a problem: stop worrying about stats and start thinking about rings!

  11. We were due for a trap game. I’m just glad it was against a team that probably isn’t gonna make the playoffs so while it’s a loss for us, it likely won’t affect Charlotte’s playoff hopes.

  12. There rotation sucks. Predictable easy for other coaches to plan against

Also seeing Brown and KP create for each other. Its been six years, when TF are Tatum and Brown gonna do this?
    This is annoying to watch

  13. Hauser wasn’t scoring and was getting cooked by ball off switches all night and played the MOST minutes… Stevens/Brisset need those minutes if hauser is not doing it for CERTAIN matchups

  14. As we prepare to meet Giannis and company I believe Jrue is giving Brown and Tatum some good tips on how to perform against his former team but last night the Bucks had more turnovers and were allowing the wizards to stay in the game in the second half John

  15. Nobody wants to say it but Hayward killed us in crunch time; at the end of the game you need players who can make plays and make free throws and that was Gordon last night, biting us on the ass, smh. But, at least we have JB

  16. Theres too much emphasis being put on missed FTs, rebounds, and Brown's performance. Forget all that. Lets address how we are allowing teams like Toronto, Memphis and Charlotte stay in close games with us. We should be dominating these teams. I will die on this hill when I say prioritizing the 3-point shot will be our downfall. Bad shooting nights happen. We missed 34 3s last night. We have way too much talent on this team to be a one dimensional offense
