Wanted to do a little analysis on how Mobley’s progression stacks up vs. some of the more successful PFs of the last 20 years.
The first thing I noticed is that Mobley plays fewer minutes than almost every one of these comps on average. Normalizing each of the charts to a 36 min basis was an important first step to understand his impact when he’s on the court.
What you will notice is that while his rebounding improvement YoY has outpaced basically all of the comps, his scoring has stagnated more than they have. However, important note is that the players being compared against all had higher usage than Mobley in their third years (even young Giannis) and typically played on teams where they were the #1 (or occasionally #2) option on offense. Normalizing for usage levels the playing field significantly in Mobley’s favor.
It’s hard to compare apples to apples given the differences in playstyle of the Cavs vs. many of these other teams/PFs, but the data points to Mobley being just as effective in his role as many of these players when you normalize for minutes and usage. This also does not take into account defensive impact, of which Mobley is likely ahead of all of these players at this point in his career (except for potentially Garnett + Duncan)

If he can keep shooting and improving that midrange like we saw yesterday, this team would have a much higher ceiling. I was literally ecstatic when I saw him pull up a few times from 10 feet. We absolutely need that to be able to play him and Allen alongside each other.

Ive been extremely critical of mobley. You cant compare his first two to this year 17 games in.

Wow great data pull! Encouraging. What worries me most is his dribbling and 1:1 offense. I still think the mid range shot will come

All he needs to do is hit 15 footers off the catch and keep the ball up on the block and it’s over for these hoes

Is this color coded or am I colorblind?

It really feels like all that’s standing in his way is his passiveness.
The talent and skills are there, this dude just has to flip a switch.

Awesome stuff! I really like the last graph especially since everything is on an even playing field, so to speak.
I defend Mobley a lot, and even then I didn’t expect his stats to compare this favorably to the elite PFs of the last 20 years.
Also, I like how you used all players that Evan has been comped to. Other good PFs of the last 20 years that come to mind are Kevin Love, Amare Stoudemire, Lamarcus Aldridge, but those guys play different stylistically to Evan.
Draymond Green is another comp sometimes thrown around, would be interesting to see how he stacked up in this – albeit he is much smaller than the rest of the guys on here.
