The Minnesota Timberwolves offense should be generating more 3-point attempts

The Minnesota Timberwolves remain in the top spot in the Western Conference, but their offense is lingering in the middle of the pack. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) explains how shooting more threes — and specifically corner threes — will boost their offense. Specifically, Karl-Anthony Towns needs to come to the corner 3-point-attempt party. Also, the Wolves are improving on both sides of the ball in transition. Finally, a look at the most recent NBA Power Rankings and the Wolves’ upcoming schedule.

  1. The wolves have been on a heater to start the season, but unfortunately the schedule after the Memphis game is brutal for an entire month. There will be a lot of exciting match ups but I am expecting this team to more than likely see a modest dip in the WC standings. They still struggle to score at times (mostly with the bench rotation) and transition D is still struggling. We don't know if McLaughlin will be healthy. Jaden has not been practicing and wasn't healthy to start the season. If they have any hope to survive that DEC schedule Ant and Karl will need to really raise the level of play and be excellent. I'd be genuinely shocked out of my socks if they were still atop the WC standings after the month of December. I just don't see it even as a homer.

  2. The attempts are th they aren't making it. They are taking 8 shots less than the top attempts and converting 6 less.

Guys need to start (if they aren't already) staying in gym late and early putting up shots (catch and shoot mostly).

I see a lot of missed uncontested shots. 1-2 per player each game is fine… but 3-4 that goes into awful territory. We have too many streaky shooters and not a lot of solid consistency.

I love guys who can at one point go 6-7.. but I prefer 3 guys who can average 2.5 – 6.5 (3pm -3ptA)

  3. The Suns game was especially frustrating to watch as it seemed like Durant and/or Booker would find something that worked and then rattle off a quick 12+ pts doing the same thing the next several possessions until the Wolves made an adjustment. Towns, for example, however, would drain an open 3 and then pass up the next 3 open looks in lieu of trying something else. I’ve had a similar frustration with timeouts in the past, too. The first 5 min of the Memphis game, as another example, started with consecutive MEM timeouts the moment their coach realized they needed to make adjustments, yet Finch will consistently weather 10+ point runs before calling a TO. The more I watch this team, tho, the more I’m starting to wonder if this isn’t by design. It’s honestly starting to feel like they’re using their opponents as a practice team the whole first half of games. Could they be intentionally making things harder on themselves because that’s how you get better? My biggest frustrations with this team are starting to transform into respect and appreciation. There’s no way, as a last example, that it took Finch a whole half to realize that the zone D was the better play against OKC, yet his guys were out there playing man up until he decided enough was enough. I have a feeling that the reason you’re wanting more 3’s is the same reason you’re not seeing them: they’re already good at that.
