[Awful Announcing] Adam Silver is asked by Pat McAfee about the NBA’s place in international relations and compares himself to Henry Kissinger, “one of the great global diplomats” before telling ESPN’s audience he is a “big believer” in a strong military…

Very strange comments from Silver. I’m not sure comparing yourself to Kissinger is good when talking about international relations. He’s made himself look pretty bad this year with his statements and inaction on domestic violence, sexual abuse, and now this I think he needs a new scriptwriter before he goes on live TV.

  1. this bald bitch compared himself to henry kissinger i didnt think he could suck more

  2. League commissioners are in a league of their own when it comes to ego and entitlement. The bigger the league, bigger the ego.

    Literally no one:

Adam Silver: Yeah I like to think of myself like Henry Kissinger

  4. Absolutely insane thing for him to say but it did make me realize that seeing these two together would’ve been like seeing Wario and Waluigi in real life

NBA PR Dept: “Ok Adam, remember to promote the excitement around the IST when you’re on today”..

    (Later that day)
“I’d carpet bomb Cambodia again if given the chance, Pat”

  6. benevenstancian0

Silver’s plans for international expansion include secret games in Cambodia and Laos.

I wonder when he announces he’s running for Senate

  8. No-Equipment-20

Turns out Adam Silver was Judge Doom the whole time

The funniest part of this is that I don’t even think people who hate Silver and Kissinger would have made this comparison. Silver doesn’t seem interesting, divisive or significant enough to make that leap. It’s wishful thinking on his part but not even wishing to be seen as a beloved figure

  10. Wow. Could you be less self-aware? Jesus fucking christ

  11. Irafurose

Silver: You know Im somewhat of a war criminal myself.

What an incredible unforced PR error from someone who is otherwise so corporate and boring. I’m actually stunned

  13. Overall_Nuggie_876

That’s some Rob Manfred-levels of cognitive dissonance shown by Silver.

Everyone is gonna rage bait, but I think the full quote is necessary to understand what he was saying. He was comparing Kissinger’s impact on US diplomacy through military to the US’s soft power influence through culture, ie basketball. Not the same thing.

Still a weird statement and he wasn’t super clear.

  15. GuessTraining

Lol what? Surely this isn’t an r/theonion article??

  16. I dont think Henry Kissinger was a particularly great person. Weird his PR team allowed him to say that.

  17. jumboponcho

Man was riding that tournament success high and said some dumb shit

  18. lobbiest_for_oceans

This description is literally the opposite of what he said. Silver is *distinguishing* the nba’s role in projecting american *soft* power to unite different cultures from kissinger’s tendency to promote the use of force.

  19. Shingorillaz

He then proceeded to say into the camera “For every missed nationally televised game a superstar misses I order the bombing of a South East Asian country”

  20. I was watching that interview and he was doing a good job right up until this point. Just completely took me out of it; it was such a weird comment to make.

Wow. That seems like a really smart thing to say…

Adam Silver had been a really PR savvy guy so far in his tenure as commissioner, but the cracks beneath his veneer appeared when Charles Barkley caught him off guard with the domestic violence question. And now this interview…

  22. Warioswallet

Very strange comments. I guess he’s trying to reach out to right leaning fans who think the NBA is too progressive. Just letting the middle of the country know that he’s down with bombing brown people too.

  23. Someonediffernt

So ja isn’t legally allowed to do things with firearms cause its bad for the image or the league but the literal face of the league can praise a war criminal responsible for the deaths of 1000s? Got it

  24. healthy_as_a_hearse

Well one of his best buddies is Jared Kushner. Not surprised he would idolize Kissinger.

  25. SexyWampa

Kissinger was a war criminal, may he rot in piss and burn in hell.

  26. Well what did you expect, he doesn’t have the kinda job that hires non elites.

  27. 3LevelACDF

Also Silver: If the NBA enters the Asian market, I would like to play the role of Pol Pot. I believe in a year zero mentality.

  28. yeetingyute

Think you guys are obsessing too hard on the Henry Kissinger bit. He likely misspoke considering Kissinger died recently so he felt compelled to bring it up and make some sort of statement on it.

People are allowed to make errors in judgement. Considering what we know of him, nothing would indicate he’s an advocate of war crimes. He’s been a great commissioner so far.

Besides that, believing in a “strong military” isn’t controversial. I don’t know how anybody can be opposed to having a strong military considering the state of the world. It’s a morbid necessity.

Everything else he said about sports being a good equalizer and beneficial to reducing obesity we can get behind.

My point is, just stop being so reactionary. It’s just not a smart way of passing judgement.

  29. goofedonskunkweed

Silver’s going to violently overthrow the heads of overseas leagues and install NBA-friendly leaders so nobody can ever challenge the NBA’s global supremacy
