The analysis done here sees the situation as static. Here is the number of open touches Giddey has got. Here is the +/- of the starting five. This, in short, is how the team is right now. And then there are suggestions for wild adjustments to correct the problem. Trade players. Sack the coach. Because if we do, the thinking goes, we will have a better static situation.
Coach Daigneault sees the problem as something that moves. You set up a system where everyone plays positionless basketball, and it works, but then the competition adjusts, and then it doesn’t. So you have to adjust to the adjustments, so that it works again. And you can be sure that the competition will adjust to your adjustment, so it won’t.
We don’t have to win every game. We do have to improve, get more information, and figure out how to respond to the other teams’ plans to disrupt ours. Let’s play out the season and see where we land. If we still have problems we couldn’t fix all season, then let’s address it in the off-season.

There’s an obvious counterargument to Mark’s points, which is that responsibility to adjust also falls on the coaching staff, which includes what lineups you run out there. Mark’s not dumb, I know he knows that, and I’m sure they know one option to deal with the Giddey spacing problem is… don’t start Giddey. The team is clearly reluctant to do that because they’re not ready to give up on getting Giddey to work with the rest of the starters; basically they’re still trying to get him to realize his upside, since his ceiling as a player in general is fairly high.
I see this interview as Mark doing his best to spin and protect his players, but you have to wonder how long a leash they intend to give Giddey before they take the very obvious move.

It’s not the kitchen sink, though. I get his answer and I hear him, but it’s a really, **really** simple defensive concept where they effectively turn half court defense into a 5 on 4 advantage. They’re literally treating Josh Giddey like Ben Simmons, and it’s murdering our offense.

I’ve always thought that the first hurdle that this team would face in the playoffs is the complete sag off our non-shooters (e.g. Houston with dort in the playoff bubble).
The fact that we are seeing this 1/4 through the season (like mark says, the kitchen sink has already been thrown at us) is an amazing testament to how good the offence is, and how much time the team has now to grow and evolve.
Similarly for Giddey. Until this year he has had fairly linear progression. Most young players face significant challenges at some point. If he can make it through this he will be a much better player for it.
