Pistons trade scenarios: Examining what Detroit could do, what I’m hearing- James Edwards III, The Athletic

“Trade scenario No. 1

Pistons receive: John Collins and Collin Sexton
Jazz receive: Joe Harris, Marvin Bagley III, Killian Hayes and a 2026 second-round pick

I personally don’t hate this trade, and I don’t think it’s a bad one for either side. Detroit gets decent players under contract for multiple years, while Utah gets contract that’ll expire after this season or next. Both teams are in rebuild mode, but the Pistons are more interested in being better sooner.
However, sources tell The Athletic, that Collins isn’t someone Detroit is particularly interested in targeting. Obviously, things can change, but the power forward who has, reportedly, already overstayed his welcome in Salt Lake City isn’t a priority for the Pistons.
Detroit does need forward depth and Collins’ ability to put the ball in the bucket as well as add vertical spacing would be good for the Pistons, but it appears his value continues to plummet a bit in the eyes of rival teams.” – James Edwards III

  1. This would be an incredible trade for the Jazz – and extremely unlikely any team would do this, even a team as dysfunctional as the Pistons. They would be taking on $46 million in Collins and Sexton per season for the next 2 seasons after this. The Jazz would owe Bagley 12.5 next season and that’s it.

I don’t see the Jazz making moves for just cap relief. We don’t particularly need it, so I’d be surprised if they were flipped for so little. I’d expect more than a 2nd and players with no potential value, but I may be overly optimistic.

Plenty of teams wouldn’t mind having Collins but his contract is a tough sale

That John Collins deal keeps looking worse. Certainly Ainge could’ve found a better way to use that money either renting out capspace for picks or signing cheaper guys.
