The league lost all pretense of competitive integrity when they partnered with gambling operations.

It’s remarkably disturbing seeing how casually these robotic talking heads will go from talking about the sport to shilling content to addicts and do both of them in the exact same neutral tone.
The dystopia is all around us.

yeah but if i bet my rent money on this parley tonight i could pay my rent, get a mid range escort and buy my gf a last minute Christmas gift

>Steph: “Yeah man. It was a great win but only on the scoreboard. In reality, this was an L. Shoutout to Rollins for that 3 at the end for them to cover. And y’all at home could’ve won big on that shot if you signed up with FanDuel, the official betting app of the NBA”

im waiting for a player to just call it out right bad.
my cousin will watch a live stream with me and he will be on some greek betting website looking at the “live” boxscore because the livestream is too delayed and spoil results for me, but there is no doubt in my mind he is gambling because why else would you be so obsessed with box score and having an instant score.
also half of the toxic comments on twitter/ig from salty betters. But gambling money is huge. I have friends that play or are a part of esports organizations and all the money is russian crypto casino money.
pickle_man_4
Because it’s funny seeing the players get to ruin or save someone’s night lol
Precinho7
It’s starting to piss me off to see all the gambling all over the place. I have no problem with the legalization of gambling (I’m from Canada) but why we need to watch pundits talk about over/under and parlays?
Beneficial_Lemon9571
Just wait until a player in retirement calls this stuff out on a podcast or something.
gonzo5622
I usually watch news while running at the gym and one day decided I’d watch ESPN and for the entire time, it was hosts peddling betting odds or using betting odds to make arguments about player’s ability. I kept watching just to make sure it wasn’t just a segment but it went on for 30 minutes! It was really weird.
Dry_Rip5135
Ugly ugly ugly…. I saw the replay of the bench reaction to that last basket. Looks so bad.
TdotGdot
I mean, these lines and point totals are plastered all over every broadcast and article now. How would we expect the players to not know the lines?
PattyIceNY
First baseball cards only came popular and mass marketed when they put because cigarette ads on the back. Hopefully this is the same with this generation and it will be quickly banned from marketing anywhere near a court.
They legalized sports gambling to keep the masses distracted from the actual problems with this country. Same ole, same ole. As long as people are focused on the non-important things, the “grown ups” can keep f*cking you behind the scenes…
12eseT
As a Wizards fan. They make me depressed on the court and in my parleys. I had GSW scoring 10 points first and Wizards said nah fuck that and scored 10 first. Sad days. All my other parlays had hit too lol.
Sequel_P2P
the Real Sports app is such a novel concept but every comments section for everything: player, team, individual game event; it’s just people saying “OVER 22 POINTS” or “5 REBOUNDS BUM”
there’s such little legitimate discourse left in favor of people begging the world to care about their fucking gambling addictions
bigbenis2021
sports gambling has ruined sports to some extent. it’s ruined live events. i can’t go to a fucking nats game without hearing some douche behind me talking about his parlay.

I guess it’s because I live in California, which doesn’t allow online sports betting, but it’s jarring how normalized betting is in mainstream sports media.
ATLsShah
A few years ago there were draft kings and fan duel ads EVERY commercial break. I feel like that calmed down since the first year DFS got big. But it’s been replaced by “reporting” on sports based on Vegas.
I think spreads are something interesting to know to gauge how interesting a game is supposed to be. But I shouldn’t have spreads, over/understandably, etc. shoved down my throat
Physical_Software_95
ESPN has been shilling gambling hard, like I’ve started to notice on instagram they’re using ESPNBet to post news n shit so they can also shove sports betting down your throat too
OccidoViper
I wonder how many players throw some games because of sports betting. I mean maybe they don’t bet but they can get friends to bet on games for them

I think sports betting should be legal, but should be a bit more taboo than it is

Gambling increases viewership which increases advertisement sales.
There are no limits to how low any corporation will go to increase profits.

Case could be made that it shouldn’t even be advertised and treated like cigarettes are in terms of ability to market. It’s way too accessible. Can literally spend Christmas Eve at your in laws gambling, losing, depositing, losing more and or at college going broke without anyone knowing.
Now if you don’t mind I have a +16782 fourteen leg parlay to go build with a free $20 bet brought to you by draftkings

When I first saw ESPN Bet’s existence, I figured the sports betting has gone overboard. Definitely a problem when a news-outlet, albeit a heavily editorialized sports base one, is actively engaging in bets with its userbase. Especially since people tend to at least partially base their bets on news and views provided by said new-outlet.

SuperDoubleDecker
I find it rather disturbing how the leagues have gotten in bed with the gambling sites. I’m all for people doing whatever they want with their money, but it shouldn’t be glamorized and pushed like it is.
Not a fan of the new gambling media.
hoagieclu
i bet a couple times a month, have made some decent money here and there. but i hate how it’s getting shoehorned into all the leagues/broadcasts. no, i don’t care about a 5 leg +10000 parlay that they’re pushing. i just want to see analysis of the game. if i cared about the point spread i’d open fanduel and check it.

>Either divorce betting and sport or get Pete Rose in the f’n Hall of Fame.
No. What Pete Rose did was not simply “betting on sports.” He was betting on baseball games that he was part of, as a manager, where he has more control over the team’s result.
There is no hypocrisy between a sports league promoting gambling and having rules against players taking part in said gambling. Just like how there is no hypocrisy when a restaurant serves alcohol but doesn’t want their employees drinking on the job.
dennoow
There’s a level of mathematical/probability relevance when it comes to determine how good teams are, which is also used for a lot of power rankings btw – and it used to be just this a couple of years ago. Now, it’s essentially just advertising for the big us gambling operators and sponsors – and that’s the wrong direction yes
flawson_9
Honestly I think the players are just having fun and it’s not a big deal at all. The issue, like said in this thread, is how talking heads shell out gambling ads and just how many gambling advertisements there are in general.
But I don’t think the players are doing anything wrong here at all
Ok_Acanthaceae6057
The Aussies will know, we’ve been down this rabbit hole for too many years, it’s bad here.
Pre game shows for football will talk extensively about multies/parlays, line/spread, player betting ect.
There are devoted pre game segments with ex-players paid by betting companies. It’s bad here that bad we had a permanent inquiring about it.
You guys are only at the seperate level, it’s not good but it’s nothing on what we have.

The gambling companies also obviously target poorer and disenfranchised communities in their marketing. People who can’t afford to gamble, like how the lotto is advertised. It’s so sick and evil, IMO. It’s akin to ads promoting tobacco.
