I have no idea why Hardy has had Kessler in the doghouse, but that second half better put an end to it. Kessler completely transformed the defense and enabled that big comeback to happen.
Clarkson was rightfully criticized earlier in the season, but he looked like his old self today and that’s massive. The Jazz offense has really been missing someone who can create off the dribble and that opens everything else up. Plus he’s ridiculously fun to watch when he’s cooking. He mentioned in the postgame interview that he was playing was an injury earlier in the season, so hopefully this return to form will stick.

This is the Jazz team I was expecting to see this year. Still might not have all the talent, but everyone played their role well and with a lot of effort

I am going to miss Clarkson if ever he really is going to be traded…Might shed a tear or two, in all honesty…

Lauri deserves to be an All Star. Clarkson when he has games like this could be an All Star, but he’s inconsistent. Walker deserves to average minimum 30 minutes per game.

Speechless.
Will Hardy finally made the needed adjustment

GAME NOTES:
Merry Christmas Jazz fans!
That lineup of Dunn-JC-Ochai-Lauri-Kessler was insane. What a perfect blend of both offense and defense. I wouldn’t be mad if this is the starting lineup moving forward, it looked that dominant. We outscored them 41-21 with that lineup in (the entire fourth quarter).
Jordan Clarkson came back (finally) and came off the bench. He still put in 30 minutes, played nearly all of the second half, and was a game high +19. He shot 11-22, 4-9 from 3 (including a nice OOB set with 0.8 seconds left on the game clock in the early fourth. Credit to Hardy for drawing up a nice play), 4-4 from the line, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and just 2 turnovers. 30 points tonight for the FlameThrower. Although he’s had a rocky season, this game looked great and he was clicking on all cylinders. He missed a few passes, and definitely did better in zone defense vs man-to-man, but a great game by JC.
Another guy who was very impactful off the bench was Kessler. I’m not sure what Hardy knows that we don’t, because in my eyes he needs to be starting. Instead, Collins & Olynyk started. In fact, Kessler only played 6 minutes in the first half. We were letting Barnes do whatever he wanted, and our interior defense was terrible. Then, halfway through the third he was put in and we went on an insane run. He finished with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 turnovers. While he wasn’t doing much offensively, it was his defensive effort and the ability to stop Toronto from getting second chance points that sparked our run. We need to be playing him more.
Lauri Markkanen couldn’t be stopped today. Catch n shoot 3’s, fadeaway jumpers, you name it. 30 points, 12-21 from the field, 4-10 from 3, 2-2 from the line. 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 30 points. I was also impressed with his defense. Playing next to Collins & Olynyk may stretch the floor for him, but it puts all of the defensive pressure on Lauri to stop them in the paint. That’s not his strong suit, and it seemed like they were asking him to do too much. However, the second half playing next to Kessler opened it up defensively for him. He was able to stay in his zone, and provide solid help defense. Impressive game by Lauri.
Kris Dunn started and was on triple double watch. 8 points on inefficient shooting (3-11, 2-6 from 3), 8 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added a steal and a block as well in 34 minutes. The last two games he has 23 assists with just 3 turnovers. He brings a great mood defensively that was infectious.
Sexton started tonight, and played a decent game. 16 points, 4-11 shooitng, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover in 25 minutes. While his stats don’t jump out at you, I was impressed by his intensity. Putting him in the starting lineup has kicked his intensity up a gear. Kind of like Dunn, when he is locked in defensively, the entire team plays so much better. I think he’s accepted his role and has some consistency that wasn’t there early in the season which has helped him individually.
Agbaji also was impressive tonight. He was a big reason why our defense was so great in the second half. He limited Gary Trent Jr and Schroder, and really disrupted the Raptors. Whatever he did at halftime to adjust worked. He also added 9 points on 3-5 shooting, 3 rebounds, 1 block in 24 minutes.
Klynyk was very efficient offensively, but terribly defensively. But that’s just who he is. 7 assists 0 turnovers in 17 minutes. 7 points, 4 rebounds as well. I want to see him start with Kessler & Lauri, just to see if that “hides” him defensively, while still allowing him to cook offensively.
What a great game. I cannot overstate just how fun it was to watch the second half of this game defensively. Everything that Toronto had easily in the first half became really tough for them. Kessler, Dunn, & Ochai just clicked and made it so hard for Toronto to get any sort of rhythm. Pair that with JC & Lauri both scoring 30, it was a very fun night.
This team seems to have cleaned up their turnovers also (knock on wood). We only had 12 tonight, which is very different than who we were at the beginning of the season. Hopefully it stays. We also had a great shooting night from everywhere, going 52.7 from the field, 44.7 from deep, and 92.9 from the line. Big credit to JC, Lauri, & Kessler for some efficient & fun basketball.
12-18! Happy Holidays!

Easily the most impressive & improbable Jazz win of the year.
I hope Hardy finally realized that Kessler, Ochai & Dunn need to play more minutes going forward. Play your best defenders!
Merry Christmas, basketball is fun again🏀🎄
