Minnesota Timberwolves fall to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder

Hello and welcome into another episode of lockdown wolves today on the show it’s the postgame podcast from a disappointing loss the OKC Thunder on Tuesday night on the road we’ll break down uh what I would describe as two very different styles and how the OKC Thunder really had the perfect recipe to

Slow down the timber wolves or really to defeat the Wolves League best defense we’ll break that down also why the Wolves adjustments did not work in this game it’s all coming on the show Welcome in you are locked on wolves you are locked on Timberwolves your daily Minnesota

Timberwolves podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day hello and welcome into to the lockdown wolves podcast part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day my name is Ben Beacon I’m the host of locked on wolves today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and

Use the code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase happy Wednesday everybody happy hump day uh this is the postgame podcast for the Wolves lost of the thunder on Tuesday night uh we’re going to break down what happened in this one why the thunder were able to

Exploit the Wolves top rank defense in this game and why the Wolves adjustments didn’t work we’ll do individual studs and Duds everything we always do the postgame pod is upcoming first of all though a big thank you for making lock dead wolves your first list in every day

Of course this show is free and available everywhere including YouTube as well as all of your favorite audio platforms wherever you listen to podcast you can find this show you can also watch on the lock on Sports Minnesota app on both Amazon Fire TV and Roku and

You can follow on X at lockon te wolves and also at B Beacon with two be’s to EAS cken all right so coming into this one we previewed this game on uh on Tuesday’s show and of course the Wolves beat beat OKC the first time around at

Target Center that was the game in which a got hurt the Wolves ended up winning by a bucket because their defense just dominated down the stretch OKC came into this game uh you know top 10 in Pace kind of middle of the pack in terms of three-point attempt rate and and um you

Know uh free throw rate top 10 doesn’t get a lot of offensive rebounds and my concern like I I said this on Tuesday I said if if Carlon TOs plays the Wolves should win this game but if the wolves and thunder when the wolves and Thunder

Play four times this year OKC is going to win at least one game simply because the Wolves struggle with these high usage efficient scorers which of course that seems silly because by definition those are generally the best players in the league so of course defenses struggle with them well what’s unique

Here about the wolves versus SGA is something and and I’m going to talk a lot more about this on Thursday show something we’ve seen a lot of so far this year which is a very a very specific type of high effic I scorer that the Wolves struggle with and that’s

Those that can dominate from the mid-range but also have another element to their game right um so like the Wolves for instance have a couple of Superstar scores I guess Anthony Edwards now does can dominate from the mid-range but that wasn’t it wasn’t efficiently part of his game as recently as last

Year Caron towns can but doesn’t prefer to do it but you get these guys that are really comfortable shooting uh you know around the free throw line around the elbows kind of that middle area of the floor but then they can also do something else for sgaa it’s get all the

Way to the rim and pass for guys like Tyrese Maxi or uh even dearen Fox but i’ would say more Maxi of the two they’re comfortable or Dame Lillard who the Wolves haven’t seen yet this year or CJ McCollum those guys are comfortable shooting from three so if you are in

Drop coverage they’re going to shoot threes all day right the Wolves defense is designed to allow mid-range jump shots not to allow them but to to make the opponent the opposing offense pick their poison in terms of what shots to shoot and the wolves are like hey if you

Want to shoot a shot we rather you take a semi- contested two than an open three or even a semi- contested three right that obviously you don’t want to let any wideopen shots get past you and and not really none of sga’s mid-range attempts in this game were quote unquote wide

Open I don’t think any of them would have been classified even as open um but what happens is guys like SGA see that swath of of real estate in the middle of the floor especially when Rudy goar’s and drop coverage and they just have a field day and that’s what happened in

This game uh the Wolves gave up 40 points in the first quarter they were down six at halftime and they were really never out of this game until you know call it Midway through the fourth quarter they were down six at halftime they were down 11 going to the fourth

Quarter and Minnesota tried to adapt to what OKC was doing as the game wore on the Wolves actually played smaller in the second half than they really have for any meaningful stretch of minutes all season long um when they were playing bigger OKC was like all right we’ll just we’ll take those elbow

Jumpers and then when they started playing smaller OKC did the same thing they just got a little bit deeper because Rudy wasn’t on the floor so with Rudy on the floor SJ was like all right I’ll shoot from 15t I’ll shoot an elbow jumper I’ll shoot an elbow like look at the shot

Chart from from the game he just Shot elbow jumpers all night but when Rudy left the game and it was Carlton towns or Nas Reed or McDaniels at the four even which the Wolves did for a time um then he just got a little bit deeper he

Said all right I’ll go to 10 feet because Rudy’s wingspan isn’t out there Rudy’s you know shop blocking Savvy isn’t out there I’m just going to get deeper in the paint and knocked out a jumper um so that he was you know getting to to 8T 10 feet um SGA

Attempted I believe it was eight seven or eight shots in the restricted area um on two-point attempts in this game sh Shay gilas Alexander was 14 of 16 shooting 14 of 16 on two-point attempts for Shay gilgas Alexander his only misses were elbow jumpers but it like

What I would call let’s call them free throw line jumpers which is anywhere from elbow to Elbow right basically within a couple feet of the of the top of the key or the the top of the the paint um Shay Shay gilis Alexander was seven of nine on Elbow jumpers I

Mean that’s like Prime Chris Paul Russell Westbrook type stuff right there right like that’s what those guys were doing um when it was actually kind of frowned upon except for Chris Paul was actually so efficient it didn’t really matter and Russa Westbrook half the time it seemed like would get his own rebound

And go up and get a dunker layup or n one um but this was like the Wolves were giving them that area of the floor or the Thunder knew that they would get that area of the floor and the Wolves let it happen and then when they collapsed and

When they or when I should say when they uh stepped up or when they you know tried to kind of it’s such a tough area to try and get a secondary contest on or in transition especially SJ was able to find open shooters for the Thunder um I

Mean he ended up with nine assists in this game only three turnovers he passed the ball much better than the last time the Wolves saw OKC and SGA literally like I know this is a cliche but he literally took what the defense gave him when it was back when the Wolves were in

Drop when Rudy was on the floor I’ll shoot an upow jumper Rudy’s off the floor I’ll get a little bit deeper I’ll try and get to the rim I’m back get to the free throw line he only attempted seven free throws which is actually below his his uh nightly average so far

The season I mean he’s averaging what I think I think over eight yeah he’s averaging over over eight free throw attemps per game The Wolves actually did a pretty good job of not fing or if the Wolves collapse on him if he does get deeper in the Wolves collapse or in

Transition he’s going to kick it to the corner to find a shooter and and we’ll get to that in a second but that’s another reason why the Wolves lost this game was three-point shooting um but in general this is the exact recipe to beat the Timberwolves defense have a high efficiency score that’s

Dangerous from the mid-range that can also do another thing in sga’s case he’s literally one of the top 10 I would argue top six or seven players in the entire league and I know that I I like I don’t think there’s an argument I think he’s certainly a top seven player in the

NBA and and you could argue top five like and I might actually if if we really wanted to make a list here but SGA could score in the mid-range and he’s a willing and capable passer and can also get to the free that’s the definition of a superstar is someone

That could beat you in that many different ways side note it’s one of the reasons why Anthony Edwards is becoming a superstar very quickly because he’s now able to do all those other things and he’s a better three-point shooter than an SGA or or or you know some of

These other guys that I mentioned earlier um is is that he can also shoot from three so you can’t play Drop against Anthony Edwards but if you play Drop against SG he’s going to kill you from the elbow if he gets deeper he’s going to get to the fruit throw line and

Or uh well probably not and or on the same play but over the course of the game beat you with the pass it’s the exact blueprint to beat this T rules team and the only like I said this after the Sixers game I said it after the

Pelicans game with Zion you know Zion obviously was able willing or capable and very easily able to get even deeper because of his sheer size and athleticism um but I said this after the Pelicans game I said it after embiid just kind of killed the wolves with

Those 18 Footers all game in Philly a couple a week and a half ago or so a couple weeks ago um these types of games the Wolves need something like the Wolves defense is built to allow these shots like if a team plays perfectly offensively like

This it’s going to be hard for the Wolves to win unless they simply outscore you which is what they tried to do and almost did in this game um you know in the embiid game it was a lot about the free throw attempts like that

Was a huge deal and same thing with Zion although Zion also just made some impossible shots SGA the Wolves defense was a little bit slow in the offense for the Wolves was sloppy enough that it gave the Thunder a big enough Advantage but you can’t also have OKC’s role

Players shooting threes like they did in this game and I want to talk about that next I want to talk about the three-point differential um and break that down and eventually here we’ll get to individual studs and Duds so we’ll do all that here next today’s episode is brought To Us by

Sports today on YouTube and subscribe to the first ever National Sports 24/7 streaming Channel all right so number one takeaway for this game is obviously the Thunders impeccable game plan and sga’s Beyond impeccable execution like seriously this dude Shot 14 to 26 on two-point shots he

Was 14 to 19 for the game got to line seven times made six of his freebies nine assists in three turnovers for SGA was phenomenal in this game this was a superstar doing Superstar things as I mentioned the Wolves going small didn’t really do anything either um the other

Thing that the Thunder did extremely well to win this game was just they they simply out three point attempted the Timberwolves and when they you have a margin like the Thunder ended up having from outside the arc you’re going to be in pretty good shape if you’re watching

On YouTube I’m going to throw up the box score or or some of the stats from the box score in this game yes the Thunder shot over 60% for the field but that second line there is what I want to highlight 18 made three-pointers on 39 attempts for OKC yeah it’s great that

The Wolves shot 44.4 4% from three right 44% from three that’s great that should win you a lot of games OKC shot 46.2% but it’s not the percentage it’s the sheer attempts OKC attempted 12 more free throws than the Wolves did and so that means they made six more free

Three-pointers excuse me than the Wolves did that’s 18 additional points from outside the arc the Wolves got a chunk of those back at the free throw line as you’ll see there on your screen they they attempted what 26 uh 26 free throws to the Thunders excuse me made 26 free

Throws to the Thunders free throws so the wolves are a plus 13 at the line but they lost 18 points outside the arc and remember coming into this game OKC was only uh 20th at three-point attempt rate League wide they shoot threes well uh they were uh I believe actually first in

Percentage or seconded percentage coming into the game and it’s just an attempt issue like OKC is not trying to kill you from outside the arc and that’s because SGA is such a high usage player and he doesn’t shoot a ton of Threes nor does he shoot them that well but when you

Have Lou Dort standing out there are going five for six from outside the arc and Jaylen Williams going four for six and Chet hren going three for six like you can’t have the Thunders role players I mean Josh gidy was 0 for two so if you combine the Thunder role players for

What they did from outside the arc that’s 12 of 20 from from the wolves or excuse me from the OKC starters that are not sgaa that can’t happen now a number of those were open which I talked about actually quite a bit on Tuesday’s show

The wolves do a pretty good job at not allowing open jumpers and they’ve been fortunate enough that opponents haven’t made a lot of open jumpers this was a progression to the mean in terms of opponent three-point shooting if you will it that’s part of it uh the other

Piece of it is like this just happens sometimes right I mean occasionally you give up a team shoots the lights out for three and that’s kind of one of those other variables where like you could give up 30 34 to sgaa on efficient shooting but you can’t also have the

Opponent role players shooting lights out from three that’s not a recipe to win some nights it just happens other nights your defense is a step slow this is a little bit of both the wolf’s defense wasn’t as crisp as it had had been um you know couple days off

Christmas in there like whatever excuse we want to give on the road the defense was just not as crisp as we’ve seen it be that led to too many open three-pointers from these guys who are all pretty good Shooters like again OKC’s a top two team in terms of

Three-point percentage even if the attempt rate isn’t all that high Jaylen Williams over 38% Chen hr’s around 38% Lou dorts like 43% in the season like these are good three-point Shooters so it’s not fluky necessarily but the problem is you let a team that is content to not shoot a high

Volume of Threes shoot not only a high volume but a high volume of open three-point attempts so it’s no surprise that they made them that they dropped 129 on the night and that they shot over 60% for the field against you that’s a big uh that that’s the other piece of

This other than SGA being unbelievable it’s the Wolves just allowing OKC to shoot so many open threes and then OKC doing a good job making those threes um on the other side of the floor which this was much less the issue because turns out they gave up 100 29 Points on

60% shooting almost 61% shooting 46% from outside the ark but the Wolves offensively overall we’re okay they just turned it over way too much they had 24 turnovers in this game I’ll throw those stats back up 24 total turnovers in this game for Minnesota OKC turned it over 15

Times this was a a fast-pace up and down game which the Wolves can play that way but it’s not their preference this season that’s not their identity right they’d much rather play a half court game because their half court set defense is so good and their half court

Offense is good enough they’ve got enough one-on-one players in cat and ant that they could beat you in the half court too so the Wolves can be content to play a slower game this was not that game and it led to you know way too many turnovers 24 turt total

Turnovers Carlton towns had five in his first game back after missing a game with the knee issue and clearly he was a step slow in this game ant had four Off the Bench Nas had four turnovers in just 19 minutes which just can’t happen um when you’re only playing 19 minutes off

The bench you can’t turn it over that much and obviously N is a High usage guys so that’s you know it happens from time to time but the offensive sloppiness and not enough flow to the offense is what killed the Wolves at that end of the floor and really the

Only reason they stayed in it was because they shot it well enough from three and they also got to the line a bunch of times they shot 32 free throws in this game 13 of them by ant eight from Rudy and Rudy actually shot it well

At the line six of eight whereas OKC only got to the line 16 times almost half of those R SJ he had seven of their 16 attempts so Minnesota attempted twice as many free throws in this game as OKC it’s the only reason why game was as

Close as it was and it still ended up being a 23-point loss so it it ended up not being close at all but it’s why the Wolves hung in it until the fourth quarter was because ant did such a good job getting to the line but again the

Sloppiness was the bigger issue um the inability to to efficiently play Fast which again is what OKC wants to do uh was was a major problem in this game so like overall the Thunder had a perfect game plan they executed nearly per perfectly and by that I mean SGA

Executed it nearly perfectly and then you add in these role players that shot lights out from three and that’s that’s what happened in this game on the other end the Wolves shoot it well enough from the three-point line they get to the line enough to be competitive but

They’re just too sloppy they turn it over too much um cat obviously looks Rusty there just isn’t the bench doesn’t give you what you need um there just isn’t enough offensively to keep up with what the Thunder are doing um and and we’ll talk about on on Thursday show I

Want to kind of talk about what teams have done to exploit the Wolves defense on Tuesday I talked about why the Wolves defense is largely sustainable and what’s been so impressive about it you know their defensive shot profile Etc on Thursday I want to talk about what some

Of these teams Philly um the Pelicans you could talk we got the Kings from a month ago or so we could talk about uh this game most recently against OKC what these teams have done to muck things up um uh and and and well and not muck

Things up in terms of slow them down but speed them up and then also Al get to the spots on the floor where the Wolves defense is vulnerable and what’s the common threat in all these losses and it’s it’s not the same thing but it’s a common threat among these players who

Have gone nuts against the wolves and I want to break that down a bit further on Thursday’s show and that’ll be the topic the main topic of the show I want to close today though by talking individual and stud individual studs and Duds as we

Always do at the end of each and every show we’ll do that here next today’s episode of lock that wolves is brought To Us by our title sponsors over at game time you shouldn’t have to worry when you’re buying tickets to your next big event no matter what it is if

Of course for the Wolves I thought the best player on the floor was was fairly obviously um Anthony Edwards yeah the turnovers were a little bit much and you’d like him to be a little more efficient but the end of the day he got to the line enough you look at this 25

Shot attempts excuse me 16 shot attempts for 25 points I guess you know when you say it that way that is fairly efficient right he only made two three-pointers but he also only attempted five we’ve seen a couple games lately where he was just gunning too many threes at

Inopportune moments and that wasn’t the case in this one actually thought the shot selection was pretty good it was more just um some of the decision- making and and the lack of crispness on his passes he actually led the wolves in rebounding tied for the lead in rebounding with seven so a

Well-rounded game for ant in a game that just was a bit uneven for Minnesota Mike Conley was was actually probably the best allaround player in the floor for the Wolves uh but 17 points for Conley on 10 shot attempts five of seven outside the arc um which is you know what Minnesota

Mike does he shoots threes right one of one of three on twos and five of seven on three-point attempts in only 25 minutes minutes in this game he had four assists and no turnovers a typical performance from Conley two steals uh very very solid and one of the reasons

The Wolves hung around as long as they did he hit a couple of big threes in there to kind of keep momentum or or I guess stop momentum for OKC and keep the wolves in the game um third stud for me it I don’t know it’s t I kind of want to

Go Leonard Miller for his garbage Time Performance um I don’t know I guess there really wasn’t even a third stud in this one for me uh you know the Thunder were too good offensively like the only efficient player Off the Bench besides l Miller was n Alexander Walker he was two

Of two outside the arc but defensively the Wolves weren’t good enough I’m only going to go two studs in this game um and dud wise I don’t know it’s tough like Jaden McDaniels I know he’s been so good so you know and also playing with the the

The um the ankle that he got through and then the tailbone contusion and all that but eight points on 10 shots missed all his three-point attempts only had one Rebound in 27 minutes and of course SGA did SGA things that’s not all McDaniel’s fault but obviously you know the

Difference I don’t know you could say you could say the difference in this game about a number of different categories I’ve already kind of explained the main differences but if you really want to boil it down wolves role players versus Thunder Roll players cly stepped up but McDaniels um

Alexander Walker Nas Reed with the turnover is like the Wolves did not get from their guys what the Thunder got from Lou Dort what they got from Jaylen Williams uh now I know that those guys score a bit more but still like they’re they’re not chat and they’re not SGA and

They stepped up and did what they needed to do um so I don’t know that’s one of the main differences in this game overall uh you know we talked about a lot of the stats already but the Wolves free throw shooting kept them in the game their their percentage from

Outside the arc kept them in the game but one of the things I two or three weeks ago the Wolves just have to shoot more threes and and they should get more three-point attempts generated by the way that they play um and again a had six assists in this game so it’s not

Like he wasn’t looking to pass but you can’t allow a team that shoots less Le than you per game to attempt 12 more three-pointers than you it just that should be an option that shouldn’t be something that the Wolves allow to happen um and thankfully again the free

Throw shoot is what kept the wolves in this game but that’s something else to keep an eye on here moving forward again on Thursday show I do want to dig into um the common thread in some of these losses for Minnesota and some of these higher um efficiency offensive Games The

Wolves still have the League’s best defense but how are some of these teams like Philly and New Orleans and Sacramento and um Oklahoma City how are these teams scoring almost at will for stretches of games against the Wolves defense so I want to talk about that on Thursday’s show of course the Wolves

Play Thursday night they’re back home for the Dallas Mavericks and just beat the Mavs a couple of weeks ago so we’ll talk about that game we’ll do a quick preview on Thursday as well and then Friday we’ll do the postgame pod from Thursday we’ll get you ready for wolves

Lakers back at Target Center again on Saturday night as the Wolves continue this Gauntlet this this really difficult stretch in their schedule we’ll talk about that a little too over the next couple of days so a big week the gauntlet continues as we head towards

2020 I don’t know what year is it going to be 2024 I feel like I’ve been thinking about 24 so long it feels like it should be 25 as we head towards 2024 um The Wolves difficult schedule continues so we’ll talk about all that here later in the week as well a big

  1. The wolves are going to continue to be a really good regular season team, but I have some serious doubts about any possible success beyond a 1st round playoff win. There is even a chance where this team could end up getting matched up with a pretty tough opponent (for them) in the first round. This team has some fairly glaring exploitable weaknesses that good teams are going to take advantage of in a 7 game series. If they ride out the rest of the season with the current bench rotation and supporting cast I do believe they will not make it past the 2nd round.

The Nuggets are 1.5 games back and are getting red hot again. I can honestly see a scenario where this team is no longer in first place and more realistically looking at finishing the season somewhere between 3rd and 5th in the west. It's a long season and this team is already starting to look a little battle worn. The losses are coming a little more frequently and the offense continues to struggle. OKC and Denver are better, well rounded teams.

The wolves just aren't good offensively. There's no good way to spin it. They have to round out if the team hopes to have any chance at a run. 17th best in the league won't get it done. You have to be able to score in this league even when you are a really good defensive team.

  2. Turnovers turnovers turnovers and a passive offense won't work….. I agree mostly Ant and Carl have to dominate and get you that win !!!! And if I'm Criss Finch I tell them that
