[Aldridge] Embiid on Wemby: “I think, first of all, he has to figure out where he wants to play, whether he wants to be a guard or a big or whatever. It’s not necessarily whether he wants to be a guard or a big; it’s what he wants to become. Do you want to become KD, or do you want to become me?

>Not trying to be too critical. Obviously, extremely talented. Right now, there’s so much hype around him, I think he’s trying to live up to the hype.

>Not KD, or like a version of those guys — you want to combine everything. Right now, I just feel like everything kind of feels a little forced, in the way that he’s playing. Which is not bad. Because the only way to get better is to play through it and learn. That’s the only way. You make a lot of mistakes, and you learn.

Dude needs to just be a big that occasionally takes KD type of shots. He’s a walking mismatch, taking long jumpers and 3’s is stupid even if he does get good at those.

25.9% of his attempts are at the rim while 30.5% of his attempts are from 3, what are we even doing here?

I don’t even like Embiid at all but the fact that people are going to act like a guy averaging 35 PPG on 65% TS isn’t good enough to be giving advice to Wemby is hilarious lol

Idk if people unironically think Wemby is going to be a MJ/LeBron player or something but Wemby being as good as current Embiid would objectively be like a 95th percentile outcome

  3. ThingsAreAfoot

He’s right and he’s not at all insulting Wemby. Wemby’s just not a very good shooter. The KD comparisons were always ridiculous cause KD has *always* been known as an unnaturally gifted shooter and that dates to before he got into the NBA. So the comparisons there were always hugely off, even if they’re both slendermen who enjoy the perimeter.

Now the following is speculation or perhaps projection but to me Embiid is saying – reading between the lines – that Wemby should be focusing a lot more on using his size because he doesn’t quite have the movement and shooting touch to be a Kevin Durant.

  4. Spurs should just give the guy the ball and let him become whatever he will become.

  5. Embiid telling it like it is. I think Wemby needs to be closer to the basket not on the perimeter, he will never be KD.

  6. This is a really fun article. Not just for the Wemby stuff but just how different the advice/quotes are from Giannis/Luka/Embiid/Porzingis. It’s especially funny because the quotes give this idea of Giannis and Embiid obsessed with improving and the game, and Luka is just vibing in the middle.

Embiid gives good advice to kid learning the nba ropes.

    Reddit comes with pitchforks

  8. surgeyou123

Problem is that he’s not good enough of a shooter to play like KD or strong enough to play like Embiid.

  9. Nephews acting like it’s given he will become mj lebron type player. Yall will be lucky if he gets to the level of embiid

  10. Single_Passenger

I don’t like embidd’s playstyle, but a lot of people in this thread are going to go through five stages of grief when sixers make a deep run this playoffs.

It’s pretty obvious the biggest hurdle for Sixers had been Doc. The difference between him and Nurse is day and night.

  11. Honestly, he can be both. He does not need to bulk up like Embiid. Just put on SOME muscle and he will be fine because of his big height advantage. Nost of his shots should come near the ring but I wouldn’t mind the occasional 3 pt shot.

  12. Ntraanced

I think operating at the nail like Embiid would do wonders for his game.

They have decent shooting in theory on that team, and Wemby has already shown he is a pretty gifted passer.

Spread them out and let him cook

    Yep free advice from
Joel. Same for all the talented can do it all guys. NBA players struggle to find their role. OKC has that issue with Ousmane and also Sarr.

  14. Valid points. One thing I always see with the “Bigs with guard like skills” in high is that the guard like skills rarely translate.

  15. rabidantidentyte

I dont think he needs to conform into any particular position. He’s 1 of 1. Let the man cook however he wants to depending on the matchup

  16. herseyhawkins33

Non-trolling Embiid is insightful. Who knew?

  17. beforeitcloy

Lol Embiid giving Wemby the same business that Shaq and Chuck give to Embiid. There’s something beautiful about the passing of the torch.

  18. TheRealestGayle

Are we just going to act like Wemby isn’t an insane prospect? I don’t want him to be KD or Embid. I want him to be Wemby. I want to see something I’ve never seen before with his Inspector Gadget type body.

  19. logster2001

I love hearing actual basketball thoughts from players instead of just the generic “great young player sky is the limit for him”

Although I dont think fits into either the KD or Embiid mold. He dont have the frame to play like Embiid and I think is a bit to tall to have the handles that allow KD to play the way he does. Even tho Wemby does have fucking unreal handles for someone his size

Honestly cant think of anyone that would be a good mold for him. KP has the body but he has no where near the shot creation talent that Wemby does. And is a much better shooter than Wemby. So yeah Wemby will really just have to carve out his own player mold. We have legit never seen anyone like him, closet player to him happens to be Chet lol

I don’t think he really needs to decide anything yet. He’s insanely talented, can move better at his size than most guards and is already a monster defensively. The offense will come especially when he has an actual playmaker or second star on the team.

  21. abysmalgolfer

He just needs a point guard to pass him the fucking ball when hes wide open under the hoop. There’s a reason he has to force things at times

  22. He has time to figure it out. Hope spurs fans aren’t too worried.

  23. I’ve always felt his track is more evolution of Anthony Davis than KD, Embiid, etc. People are enamored with his offense, but he looks like he could be the best defensive player *ever*, IMO.

Let him be a versatile no.2 on offense and the foundation of the wall on defense.

  24. Mundingburrasaurus

KD comparisons are always overblown. He is literally a 6’10” shooting guard. Nobody compares – he is the unicorn of all unicorns, if we have to use that word. Other “unicorn” type players do not have the handle, shot creation bag, and movement KD does and that’s a set of skills KD has had his entire life to develop.

Wemby, Chet, etc need to just be themselves, at least for now, and I think thats more than enough to be MVP level guys for their careers. If the skills they add result in them being like KD, great. But there’s nothing wrong with being Embiid with speed, ultra-Porzingis or Giannis with a 3 ball.

  25. WinterCareful8525

WEMBY’s goal should be more AD/Giannis

  26. hidey_ho_nedflanders

Wemby is so unique I think he can blend skill sets of both KD and Embiid. Why does he need to be confined to either or?

  27. RVAIsTheGreatest

Eveything he’s saying is accurate and Wemby has a long way to go on his perimeter skill set to be the kind of supersized wing scorer some envisioned of him, but a lot of what JoJo describes is because of the situation he’s in; the fact Pop is basically doing nothing to put him in positions to succeed, the fact he’s often being allowed to freelance, and his teammates.

  28. Embid is saying the same thing folks said about him… so accurate

  29. He needs teammates that pass the ball to him when he’s open.
