And Gavin new year new New York Knicks making a pretty big trade here moving uh RJ Barrett Emanuel quickly and a second round draft pick for OG anobi Malachi Flynn and precious auua this trade kind of I don’t want to say coming out of nowhere but just it feels like one of
Those trades where it’s like a little early before like trade season really kind of start starts heating up and so let’s kind of start with why did the Knicks make this trade for OG and and Obi so it it felt like from the moment they signed Dante Devan chenzo that one
Of Emanuel quickley or Quinton Grimes was ultimately gonna get dealt and I think that timeline might have been exacerbated by the Mitchell Robinson injury the Knicks went from a h top five defense when Robinson is playing to one of the worst in basketball uh since he’s
Been injured and I I do believe it goes deeper than that though they pursued anobi um as far back as last year offering multiple first round picks for him at the time that wasn’t enough for Toronto but there’s been a desperate need for a three and D guy at at that
Small forward spot and obviously an anobi offers a lot more than that but in terms of a fit around Jaylen Brunson and Julius Randall I I mean outside of I guess kind of like the star class of guys an anobi is about as clean as you
Can get and RJ Barrett was about as poor as you could get in terms of a fit and I think at the end of the day it’s it’s it’s almost that simple in that he offers the positional size of Barrett that Tom thibo desired and the two-way
Play of Emanuel quickly so when you look at kind of what what this trade cost the Knicks in RJ Barrett and Emanuel quickly I want to get to to quickly and kind of how they’re going to maybe replace his production in a minute but you know the
Knicks were trying to get OG an anobi anobi last season you know it the the asking price was a little steep you know three four first round draft picks whatever it was that the the Raptors were trying to hold out for how do you kind kind of grade the return here right
And what it actually cost to get ogan and Obi it’s a hard question I’m I’m going to call it a be because I do and and that’s that’s less the reflection of anobi and more so me thinking the cost is pretty substantial because I’m very high on amanuel quickley he was the
Common denominator in in not only the Knicks best lineups but lineups that have been some of the best in the NBA this year the the primary one he played with um with Josh Hart Jaylen Brunson Julius Randall and Isaiah hartenstein plus 33 per 100 possessions a 97th
Percentile lineup and that’s not a small sample size thing it’s a lineup that’s played substantial minutes this year last season with Jaylen Brunson they were consistently one of the better two-man pairings in basketball and the fundamental issu is Tom Fido just never believed in it enough to start and and
He valued uh size just a little bit too much in my opinion but given that and and the fact that that was a reality and I don’t think tibs was ever budging on that this was a fantastic return because again anobi is is just an immense upgrade over RJ Barrett who is hyper
Inefficient has been one of the least efficient players in the NBA since coming in an anobi is none of those issues offensively and while Barrett is turned into a fine Defender an anobi is about as good as it gets on the perimeter in the NBA so it it covers a
Lot of different bases for the Knicks the concern there is they might have just given up the best player in the trade yeah I mean it look OJ and Obi fits Tibido he fits the Knicks a lot better than RJ Barrett does that’s that’s an absolute certainty here but do
You are you worried at all you mentioned you know them maybe making this trade or be or kind of things being exacerbated by Mitchell Robinson being injured are you worried at all that this was kind of like a a reactionary trade where they’re like oh well we’ve got to do something
To try and fix the defense rather than just okay hey maybe this is not because what you don’t want to have happen is you don’t want to lose this trade right yeah I I I don’t think so and I maybe maybe I shouldn’t have even mentioned
That but I think I think it might have just accelerated their timeline and created a little bit more urgency just because that’s such an obvious need right now um but this was I I again I think in the working since last year they originally had very serious discussions with Toronto I believe
Before the Mitchell Robinson injury was the last time they played the Raptors in Toronto they might have been just right after he got hurt but the point is this has been on their minds for a while and I think Anan noi makes a lot of sense regardless because it feels like a move
Precipitating another move snz and Begley reported that the Knicks might have one or two more coming in short order or as soon as this off season and to me that makes a lot of sense I think anobi is the kind of guy you get if you
Want to be all in like if he’s your fourth best player you are in very good position he’s someone you acquire certainly for the regular season but even more for the postseason going up against the Jason tatums the Giannis Sant tmos um those types of guys in in
The playoffs like the Knicks just had no answer in those matches they didn’t really have much of an answer for Jimmy Butler last year um an anobi at least gives them an option about as good as any team in the NBA has if this is the move before the big move or before
Another move coming down the pipeline what who who else would be on the trading block who else would you would you factor into a trade to make another potentially big move if you’re in New York you you’re saying um who who would the next pursuer who would they give up
Who would they give up I think it’s going to be a lot of draft picks and and the good news is they have a lot of draft picks they have all their own they have three extras none of them are of premium value it’s a Detroit first a
Wizards first and they still have that top five protected bucks first that took a little bit of a nose dive when when Giannis resigned there um so the question is can they out bid teams and I mean the first n i I know this wasn’t what you has but the first name that
Comes to my mind is Donovan Mitchell and obviously the you you would expect the Brooklyn Nets to be on him in on him with all the Suns picks they have to offer the Miami Heat can potentially throw haime hakz in that trade or Tyler herro in that trade so they’re the
Knicks are not going to necessarily win on players or picks the hope would be that the combination of both is enough to entice C Cleveland or or maybe Mitchell just coming flat out and saying Hey I want to go to New York now if the target is someone bigger like Joel
Embiid this is a little bit of a hit to those goals because I think it the the presumed hypothetical deal this offseason was the Nick’s giving everything all the picks plus an RJ Barrett plus an Emanuel quickly and now you have a little bit less to work with
These players like a Josh Hart Dante dvan chenzo further along in their career making more money a little bit less appealing to Philadelphia who to be clear right now has has no uh no thoughts of Trad MV because they are doing fantastic at least here in the
Short term there may be you know a bigger move coming further down the pipeline for the Knicks but at least in the short term how do you envision them kind of trying to replace the production of Emanuel quickly because he’s been such an important piece for this Knicks
Team you know how do you even begin to replace what he did for this team I I think I think it’s a massive concern because they go from having I I called it on the podcast yesterday three and a half ball handlers if you want to call
Quickly like a 0. n and RJ like a 6 to two ball handlers it’s it’s Jaylen Bruns and Julius random we even saw in that Pacers game against the easiest defense you could go against they they both played fairly well but I I think they were over taxed and and you only want
Julius Randall making so many decisions um and they they certainly need another guy who’s comfortable with the basketball in his hands um I don’t think the shot distribution is going to be an issue because you go from someone like RJ Barrett who was super inefficient and it almost cancels out how efficient
Quickly was to Dante dant chenzo who’s coming off a 38o game last night to anobi who’s obviously close to a 40% three-point shooter and very good around the basket so they’re going to get good shots um but to actually answer your question it could be a further trade
Down the road or they they might just live with it um the the fear there is if there’s an issue to Brunson or Randall I I just think that would be so destructive at this point because there isn’t really that next guy on the roster
