[Ricky Rubio] I wanted to post this message for you today because my NBA career has come to an end.

Ricky Rubio posting his retirement message [on his twitter](https://twitter.com/rickyrubio9/status/1742953996245971163/)

> Hello,

> July 30th was one of the toughest nights of my life. My mind went to a dark place. I kind of knew I was going on that direction, but I’ve never thought I wasn’t under control of the situation. The next day, I decided to stop my professional career.

> One day, when the time is right, I would love to share my full experience with you all so I can help support others going through similar situations. Until then, I would like to keep it private out of respect for my family and myself, as I’m still working on my mental health. But I’m proud to say I’m doing much better and getting better everyday.

> I wanted to post this message for you today because my NBA career has come to an end.

> It all started on June 2009, draft night in New York. What a dream. After playing 12 years in the league, with all its up and downs, I have collected lots of good memories and great relationships. Minnesota, Utah, Phoenix and Cleveland. Wow. Thank you!

> Special mention to Cleveland. My last home. I know the way things ended have been tough. I could never have imagined the year would develop this way, but you have an amazing organization, with Koby and JB, who have been extremely respectful and understanding of my situation and caring for me as a person.

> Thank you all for the love and support!

Much love Ricky. That playoff series against OKC was incredible.

  2. I wasn’t expecting to be so sad about Rubio retiring. I honestly didn’t realize he was having such major mental health issues.

What happened July 30th? Or is that not publicly known?

  5. The first ever 1990s born player drafted into the NBA has just retired.

The season in Cleveland before the injury was incredible. He and Garland played like long lost brothers. What a fun run, and what a depressing injury. All the best to Ricky, a genuine real one.

personal health and the pursuit of happiness is a lot bigger than basketball, good luck Ricky ❤️

Friendly reminder that it’s really easy to get mental health support, and it’s usually fully covered by insurance.

Been dealing with some anxiety and depression issues for years, and a few months of once-a-week therapy has been a massive help for me.

    Will always root for Ricky.
Probably one of the most loved wolves player.

Good on him for being willing to share his struggles publicly. Male professional sports have come a long way, but there is still a lot of macho BS about players struggling with their mental health. The more athletes that speak up, the better it will be.

Love you Ricky!! Hope he can be in the NBA in some way moving forward but if he wants to just do his own thing the rest of his life I respect that too. Great player and great guy.

  12. One of my favorite players of all time. I was SO STOKED when he came to Utah. Hope he’s doing OK, sounds like he’s had a rough time… the only jersey I own is a Rubio Jazz jersey. Those OKC series were unforgettable!

Remember watching this dude in the 2008 olympics, I think he was only 18 playing against Kobe, LeBron, D Wade, Melo. Cheers Ricky, wish you the best in your future.

2 years ago when Cleveland made the jump in mobleys rookie year, Rubio was amazing. Sad to envision what his career would’ve been without all the major injuries. Would’ve exceeded his draft expectations. But in my opinion he hit his draft expectations and has a great career

He withdrawed from the Spanish national team during last summer. He’s been struggling.

Love Ricky, I’m glad he took his mental health seriously. It’s so fucking hard to do, especially at that level and when you have invested so much, AND have an entire city watching your every move (can’t imagine the pressure).

Sad day. Much love to Ricky. Big fan of his game when he was playing for T-Wolves.

Celts are offering Jaylen brown for AD

His reel coming into the league was legendary. Every year I hoped he would find his way to SA, like I wish for most foreign players, but I thought nothing would be more fun than to watch Manu and Ricky in the same squad.

Hope he starts feeling better. Kinda random but Ricky Rubio was always a great PG in most of the 2l games. Great passer, could attack the basket very well, I loved choosing him all the time on those games.

I made him go back to Minnesota and win a championship with Kevin Love

The Ricky Rubio Suns team made basketball fun again after a decade of bad teams. Wish Rubio in Phoenix lasted longer but those were some good times.

  22. Smellmyhand

I LOVE Ricky. Some of my worst NBA takes are just me defending him because I always believed in him. He’s my answer to “who is that guy you kept waiting for to get to the next level”. I wish him the absolute best and for peace in what he’s dealing g with. Not sure what his physical health is like now after the injuries but I hope we see him in the Olympics this summer

  23. fffffffffffttttvvvv

The road to recovery from severe mental health problems is very rough, very lonely, and it never ends. He was an amazing player and seemed like an amazing guy. I hope he weathers whatever has hit him alright and that his road is as smooth as it can be. Good luck, Ricky ❤️

  24. RainmakerIcebreaker

Hope he’s okay. One of the best passers I have ever seen.

The Bubble Suns were clearly in the right direction. I don’t think getting Chris Paul was worth it. They reached the finals with CP3 but I don’t think they were far off if they kept the chemistry going with Rubio
