Portland Trail Blazers Get a Much Needed Bounce Back Win Over the Brooklyn Nets

Weekday so make it part of your daily routines Monday through Friday tell your friends to do the same make it your first listen it’s lockdown Blazers your team every day in today’s show we are going to talk about two games that happened over the weekend Friday night

The Blazers lost to the Dallas Mavericks and what I think was maybe their most troubling loss of the season and then they got a much needed bounceback win beating the Nets in overtime in Brooklyn as they start a 4-day stay in New York they played the play the Knicks on Tuesday and they

Kicked it off where they matina win over the Nets they really really needed that one so we’ll recap both of those games we’ll talk about why it was kind of how they got here and why it was so so desperately needed for them to win and

Just kind of restore the Good Vibes and the faith the faith in sort of things that could possibly go right cuz I felt like not much was for a brief moment there while they were in the Metroplex and then we’ll talk some roster moves the Blazers are down to just 14

Players excuse me 13 players on on on the roster as it currently stands after waving is Wayne Wright and Skyler May we’ll talk about what it means why they did it and what’s to come that’s what we’ll do in the third segment first let’s do what we do fastest recap in the

West we got two games to go through one of them we won’t Linger on long because it was a mess Blazers down 2638 to the Mavs Friday night so they they they come Friday night second second meeting with the Mavs but Luca donish is playing and Derk Lively isn’t playing and Grant

Williams isn’t playing so it’s just going to be Kyrie and friends and Kyrie and Friends score 18 paint points in the first quarter they take a 38-26 lead on on the Blazers after one but you know they’ve been there they have they’re a bad starting team you know they’re not

Down by a kajillion and they actually hang in there they’re down it’s a seven-point game in the closing seconds of the second half or excuse me of the second quarter heading into the heading into halftime and uh Josh Green hits a falling foot on the line jumper at the

Buzzer to make it a nine-point lead but you’re down nine you haven’t played well kind of felt like it was teetering away in that second quarter but they Haven you haven’t played you haven’t played well but you’re only down nine on the road hey hey figured out get it going

Here’s the thing they came out of the locker room and played the worst quarter of the season the worst quarter of the season so bad that their coach decided it was over before the players did plays were out scored 40 to 16 in the third quarter went down in the fourth quarter down

10269 heading into the fourth and played the mixers in the fourth quarter all rookie lineup no veterans got back out on the court they played youngsters cuz the game was over from a ninepoint game to a 35o deficit yikes um just the the biggest the biggest yikes you could possibly have

Um the the sort of details of this as as we get into it um so it’s it’s seven zip to open the quarter and the Blazers have missed four shots and turn the ball over and chony bips takes a timeout so now all of a sudden

You from 9 to 16 and you’re not playing well bips takes a timeout come out of the timeout immediately out of the timeout do op turns the ball over immediately out of the timeout Mavs hit a three and then they get after after another um Blazers miscue they get a

Fast break dunk it’s now a 12 zip run it’s a 19point lead with 8 minutes and8 minutes left and Anthony Simons finally gets fouled and goes to the free free throw line and chony bips sends five players to the scores table the universal sign for y’all can’t do

It from a nine-point game to a 21o deficit and hits a free throw so it’s a 20-point deficit but from a nine-point game to a 21-point deficit an didn’t get subbed out cuz that’s you know how um that’s how the rules work you can’t get subbed out here on the free throw line

But NE a dead ball two possessions later when Derk Jones called for a foul they get an out of there they put five five fresh players in the game Andy Simons never checks back in Jeremy Grant never checks back in it is a all remixers all Rip City remix all mixers fourth quarter

Blazers played a fiveman all rookie lineup that was kind of intriguing but they were getting thrashed and they lose 139 103 that’s your fastest recap in the west uh jerey Grant led the way with 18 scoot Henderson had 17 10 of those came in the fourth quarter however Shaden

Sharp 15 Chris Murray 10 uh amrey Simon six on one of eight shooting he was awful he had such a bad trip in Dallas both games in Dallas he was awful uh tan Kamar 10 to go with seven boards he got to play down the stretch as well Malcolm brogs

In four on two of eight shooting matis thyo got hurt in this game left in the third quarter with a right foot Sprain and did not play the following Sunday against the Mavs uh IU baji scoreless in his 17 minutes on the Mavs side KY Irving 24 points and 2 24 points nine

Boards five assists in 29 minutes he didn’t have to play at the end of the game 14 for Josh Green 12 for Derrik Jones Jaden Hardy had 19 Hardy party uh Tim Hardway junr had 19 and 14 for AJ Lawson you know it’s like I don’t really know who AJ lawon

Is but I did get to see I did get to see like 25 minutes of him because the Blazers made the game non-competitive this was as this was the this was the most troubling loss of the Blazer season I’ll talk about that in the second seg

But we got another game to get through and they bounced back baby to restore The Vibes boy do they need it boy do they need it because um you lose by 36 after you already got smoked by the same Mavs team and it’s like and and they’re missing two other

Starters and their best player it’s like they needed the Blazers needed to restore The Vibes cuz the Vibes folks they were bad it was starting to get a little uh fans and and and uh media types getting a little restless and I think that’s um pretty fair because when

A team sucks you should say that they suck and the Blazers in Dallas sucked but they come back against against the Nets and here’s what they do they don’t lead for the first three quarters but they did the Blazers thing that they do down 26 30 after one down 52 at the

Break they had a really nice close to the second quarter I thought um there was like through the first quarter and a half I was like oh no no they’re about to score 89 points and lose to the the Nets but they closed they closed the um the second quarter

Strong I thought amre Simon sco Henderson both played well at the end of that quarter particularly ants to kind of get them going ant was like I’m going to make shots now and we’re going to win but um the Blazers still don’t you know only down two and they briefly tied the

Game this in the third quarter but they never take the lead in that in the second half they’re down 85 93 eight-point lead for the Nets 9385 heading into the fourth quarter and the Blazers have never LED but their largest deficit has only been 10 points they’ve

They’ve down 8 and 10 basically between 8 and 10 like the whole game they’ve just been right there doing what they do that’s kind of kind of been their MO and then they finally make their push Shaden sharp makes a layup with 6 minutes and 40 seconds left gives Blaze their first

Lead they lead by two then they rip off a 10 run right after that they take a 108 107 108 101 lead a seven-point lead with 440 left and it’s like all right they’re going to win and then the and then there and then of course always with this stuff there come

Your nets everybody’s going to make a run Denis Smith Jr got a layup on the left hand side under two minutes left and the Nets go back up 11 11 11 1110 but athrey Simons responds with a big three then Mel Bridges hits a hits a

Pull up we are tied at 113 with a minute remaining and a chaotic final minutes uh the Blazers they um they kind of run the clock down and try to get a shot and and end up with the ball out of bounds on a

Chon BS had to win a challenge uh to to get the ball back and and or excuse me uh yeah Jac Von loses a challenge rather the Blazers had had get to keep the ball get some time in the clock and they run this great little lob play for Shaden

Sharp with like 30 seconds left and Malcolm Brogden fires just an awful pass easy dunk you put it anywhere near the rim he didn’t put it anywhere near the rim Jaden sharp misses a layup um and so now the BL tie ball game Nets are

Going to get to come the other way they take a time out to set something up that they want Blazers Come Away with a stop chy bips wins a challenge and the Blazers get the ball back in the final minute chy bips won two challenges and

Drew up a great atto uh that his team flubbed but um bips needed bips needed a night where it was like hey he did some stuff well and he did some stuff well in this game but Blazers get the ball back they’re kind of in this weird in between

Spot where um they should hold for the last shot by the time they get it back but if you hold for the last shot you’re going to get a hard one and so what the Nets do right away is they just go double Anthony Simons they come after

Him and he’s he’s like oh I had I’m I got to get I got I want the ball at the end but I got to get out of my hand so he gets out of his hands to Jeremy Grant who’s basically wide open in the corner

For a three but again too much time left on the clock you don’t want to shoot early one of the most important things you can do when you have the ball in a tie game is shoot it when the clock hits trip like ball in the air at triple zero

Right like no no you you want to be you either want overtime or you want to win you do not want any others you want no secondary options but ball comes up to Shaden sharp and he’s like pretty open on the wing could have taken a three

Right away could tell he’s like I have such a I have a wideopen lane cuz they’re they’re worried about ant way far from the rim I have Nick Claxton on me net Center like I can attack and he decides to attack gets to the gets to his right hand finishes with 5 seconds

Left five and a half seconds left and the Blazers go up by two should they have held out a little longer yeah probably like the best like sort of strategy there is again shoot with shoot shoot at triple zero but like sharp personally I can’t be fallen shad

And sharp for attacking it’s all I want him to do when I watch him play um he gets a bucket but the Bladers have to have one Last Stand they don’t are not able to stop Mel Bridges he hits a little pull-up spinning uh spinning

Jumper gets to where he wants to go oh he spun in the last one this one he just kind of pulled up beat toan Kamar who came in for defense beat him cash overtime but in overtime the Blazers took advantage of the Nets doubling uh Anthony Simons they put Malcolm brog in

The game and three straight possessions off double teams Malcolm brog hits a three hits a three and then drives a close out scores eight points in overtime and the BL go on to win 134 127 fun final minute the Blazers you know held on made plays when they needed to

And then played really well and got a big big game from um from Brogden and OT big moments from brogen OT big shots is what I’m trying to say from brogen and OT and they survived 134 127 in overtime big big bounceback win uh let’s do your

Nets game big one from anony Simons um six six against the Mavericks awful and I thought he got picked on on defense in both games beat up but they need him to bounce back he comes back 38 38 points 11 assists 13 of 25 from the floor hit

Five of 10 threes got to the free throw line and four of those free throws were were intentionally fouling late but got to the free throw line early made free throws he finished with 38 Jeremy Grant 27 Shaden sharp 21 Off the Bench Malcolm Brockton 18 Off the Bench including

Eight in overtime he was huge uh Timon Kamar had five 15 and 13 for dape uh 10 and four assists for scoot Henderson he finished with uh he he played 30 minutes but he didn’t play the end of the game um he just didn’t play much in much in

Crunch time would it mattered he didn’t play all in crunch time but he he he he kind of subbed out and then they they tried to go big and finish the game with with because shanon sharp was playing well and and have tone Kamara and Jeremy

Grant on there and then they were like Timone just he’s he’s tough to have out there for offensive reasons they had to go to another guard and they went to Brogden and Brogden delivered and I understand why you would play a um play a good offensive player down the stretch

They desperately needed a win I would like in general nitpicky I’d rather see I’d rather see scoot play the minutes but like scoot played 30 minutes Malcolm brong delivered a win in night they really needed it I got no I got no problem with it overall on the other

Side Mel Bridges 42 points four boards uh 17 for cam Johnson he missed a big one of the overtime that would would have changed the game 16 for and 11 for Nick Nick Claxton he played most of crunch time with five fouls and there was a couple contests including one on

Jeremy Grant overtime he just didn’t play defense because he had five fouls so uh it worked out in the Blazers favor nine for Dorian finy Smith Off the Bench uh Nets got nine from cam Thomas eight from Royce O’Neal 10 and 10 dimes from Dennis Smith Jr I thought he was really

Good and he got to play at crunch time and 11 from drron sharp Blazers Legend until he left with a apparent lower leg injury um that’s your fastest recap in the west I think this Nets win was crucially important for The Vibes because the they needed a bounceback because I

Think Friday’s game was the most troubling game of the season let me get into it um this requires a little bit of time travel on the Blazers played a set in Dallas right they played they played Wednesday Friday they weren’t going to practice on Thursday is what uh chony

Bips told uh the oregonians Aaron Fentress and makes sense right first of all NBA teams don’t practice very much because they value sort of health and rest and particularly um good teams really don’t practice blaz are not a good team so I think it’s fine uh but

Like uh the original travel plan did not call for practice Thursday in Dallas and then bips went home and watched that first game against the Mavs where the Blazers just got punked and and um you know they just Luca and and Kyrie Irving just crushed him in that second quarter

And that was your ball game and he said you know we didn’t put up enough fight we didn’t put up enough fight in this game we’re going to practice on Thursday because I want to I want to make sure we have our fire make sure we have our competitive speed

Spirit make sure that we really come out and fight and you know they weren’t awful to begin um in that Mavs game they did got give up almost 20 paint points in the first quarter and 38 points um they weren’t good by any means but they

Were like they hung in there right they were only down seven at halftime and you come out in that second half you give up that 120 run to begin the half chony buls pulls the plug says four minutes like you know he didn’t stick to his rotations he just sent five

Dudes to the scores table CU he said you he said y’all can’t hack it like you aren’t playing hard enough or well enough to to make this competitive I like basically I quit like basically and and you you know and you all forced me to quit cuz you’re getting punks you’re

Getting absolutely destroyed in this game um and obviously you put the bench guys in they didn’t do any better you end up losing by a lot more points than you were down but like that was a clear um we need to play hard we need to come

Out and and execute we’re down you know we’re we’re in the game you come out of the third quarter and just are lifeless no you know don’t execute out of a timeout uh just just a troubling game amre time was awful um Jeremy Grant not good Malcolm bro did not good like the

Vets right like the vets that you kind of need to rely on and lean on because you know you’re playing these games without some of your players you’re playing the game without DeAndre Aon um although I will note no one is saying like the Blazers aren’t playing hard if

Only DeAndre was back um but um you know you’re you’re playing without Jabari Walker usually provides a little bit of a spark a little bit of energy like but you can’t it can’t be like jabori Walker can’t be the guy that like holds the thing together right just needs to be

More of a collective effort and all these things and that Dallas game when you just get absolutely embarrassed embarrassed in that second half and in in four minutes your coach says this game’s over and you don’t put up enough fight to make it to make it be a problem

Right just it’s just okay you’re getting your butts kicks get out sit down all right from a nine-point game to a 35-point blowout it’s a g-league fourth quarter all REM all remix fourth quarter Ryan ruper we get to see scoot Henderson we get to see uh scoot’s never played

For the remix but he did practice with him one time uh you know you get all rookie lineup with Chris Murray and IBU baji and and and Scoot and and Tani it’s like it’s fun I think there was like something redeeming about the seeing the young guys play in a fourth quarter but

Like that’s for if you’re not doing that intentionally it it doesn’t have much charm right it has a little bit of charm when you’re like okay here’s the group we have let’s go play Young it’s not that Charming when you’re like like we have veterans we have hundred million in

Salary sitting over there and they can’t play so we got to get them out of there um and like we’ll figure it out we’ll have to figure it out later um I think lost in that Mavs game was that scoot Henderson had a really solid first half

I thought he played really really he had put together a really just like cromulent first two quarters he had he had six assists couple highlight PL passes and I thought he played continued um to be make some nice plays against the Nets and it’s like you hit that low

Point against the Mavs and and all season long i’ I’ve credited the Blazers for this is that even when they’re they’re playing games where they just not don’t really have a chance to win they’re not getting blown out and rarely can you say hey they’re getting like

They’re not bringing it right I the phrase I’ve often used in the show is like they don’t get cheated right because their effort isn’t in question that second game against the Mavs their effort is in question that is embarrassing that’s an embarrassing showing and you’re in the middle of a

Road trip you have four more Road games left it’s like this thing is not going to get easier they’re not they are not coming to save you in fact you’re getting on an airplane and flying to a new city cuz you got to keep going and that’s why the netwin was

Crucial crucial for The Vibes um crucial for The Vibes not not just because they win and not just because Anthony Simons played really well and you need him to play well and like it’s um he was particularly bad against the Mavericks and and they needed him just to bounce

Back and you got a really nice game from sharp and a good enough game from sharp where you kept him on the court at winning time because he needed to be there you weren’t Force Fe Force feeding him minutes you were playing him because he because he earned him like you needed

That and and then Jeremy Grant to have that like just one of those nights where it’s like hey we need a secondary scorer and Jeremy Grant scores points when you need him type of thing um and less like force feeding him post isos but like um

I think this to to not only have that happen but to to be losing for most of the game and then finally in the final half of the fourth quarter Take the Lead take build a lead lose the lead again in the final two minutes come back and make

Plays and and s was really good and and and hit some big shots shanen sharp had had two big layups uh in in the final couple minutes and and Malcolm brg then brought him home with with important important points in overtime like you just needed you know and bips to his

Credit like I said wins two challenges and ands draws up what should have been a go-ahead go-ahead play for for um a bucket like he drew up a really nice lob play where it looks like it’s coming to Grant and it looks like he’s going to go

Around for a lob and then actually he’s looping back and you end up with uh du breath your best you know best and most physical screen Setter setting a screen to free up Shaden sharp curling to the rim you throw the ball anywhere near the cylinder like the orange thing and and

And Shaden sharp is cramming home a go-ahead bucket it’s a bad pass but like I I think um I think bips needed to have a game where it’s like yeah I can I got it I got it like I can I can be impactful I

Can make you know coaches don’t do it a ton right it’s like you drop a great ATO and they threw the ball away it’s like hey what are you going to do like once you kind press go it’s like you you’re it’s out of your control but he needed a

Game where uh he needed a game where he could say I helped us win the game I challenged a play that you know that got us that got us the ball back I got I uh when the Nets were trying to make a save

Under their own Rim you know I it I you know had another challenge on on a just a totally bogus Malcolm Brogden call it wasn’t a hard challenge to make but he had the timeouts available he had two timeouts available and he had the challenges available cuz he didn’t use

Them like that’s just game management stuff and and CH needed a positive one players need a positive one and everyone got it and you and you you can walk out of Brooklyn like hey the sky isn’t falling I don’t think you can say things are fixed I don’t think you can say like

Oh this team’s actually good believe it or not and I’m not selling you on that what I’m selling you on that is is Friday was such a troubling game that to not have it carry over and then when you were losing the whole game to not have

Not Wilt down the stretch just say hey the Nets aren’t very good you know they’re com coming to this game they they were 16 and 20 they’re not a very good team but like certainly have a better record Cly better record than the Blazers and you’re on the road and it’s

A weird you know um it’s a weird tip off time in Brooklyn you get an afternoon matina game and it’s like let’s why don’t we go why don’t we go win like what if we went what if we went out and won it and uh they find a way to do it

And they just needed it so bad they need it so bad it was it was just just for a Vibes reset they might go in you know the the the rest of the games on this road trip the New York Knicks the Oklahoma City Thunder and the

Timberwolves this is a like a very real chance that they lose all of those games it’s very likely there will be heavy underdogs in all of those games so get a win get the reset the Vibes feel good about yourself for three hours and then worry about what’s next um I I think

With everybody healthy uh there’s been some not everybody healthy by any means no Jabari no no ma thy no no uh no deand Ron but like with the for guards healthy there’s been some like who stands where type of stuff and we’ll talk about sort

Of the chess match and and how how ch he’s using all of them uh later later in the show this week but I thought for now feel good call it call it like hey it’s just a exhale game exhale game and just uh just do with me out we’ll take a deep

Inhale dear listeners they needed it also they made some roster moves they made some roster moves let’s talk about ish Wayne Wright and Skyler Mays who are no longer Trailblazers and what it means going ahead for this team that’s what we’ll do to close the show but first let’s talk

Still listening to lock on Blazers Blazers got their exhale but they also made some roster moves ish Wayne Wright we hardly knew ye Skyler Mae thanks for the memory sachche away both gentlemen as the Blazers ahead of the January 10th date of where contracts become fully guaranteed decided to make

Roster moves and wave Wayne Wright and ma um I would say Wayne Wright is a name that we’ve mentioned if you’re everyday listener shout out to my everyday or his name that I’ve mentioned a bunch of times as very likely or at least one of the two players most likely to get waved

Cuz he has fully non- guaranteed contract the other one Moses Brown partially guaranteed but I think with the Blazers uh big man situation and we have just like no update on what DeAndre is he’s just like oh he’s day-to-day with a knee injury now he’s going to

Miss like two weeks um it’s not good that like you just that’s that’s not a an a lingering knee problem for for a basketball player is tough so I think they got to keep Moses Brown obviously the Blazers have I would say the Blazers organizational have more invested in

Moses Brown than you dear listener and me I just don’t think he’s very good um and that’s fine but he’s um he was not waved it was Skyler M Skyler ma also partially guaranteed I think they feel more comfortable with their point their guard rotation and guard situation than

They do with um you know and their you know and and their wing situation they do with their their front line um they they’re going to need help and you don’t wave Moses Brown to only have do upath and iachi like I think you need a little

Bit of of insurance right now for how you’re currently constructed but what it really means uh so Wayne Wright fully non- guaranteed partially guaranteed fors Skyler ma get your money Skyler um Maize was fine I think he was he he had real flashes last year during the tank

Run and he was kind of exposed this year as for what he is like he’s a solid backup or third point guard I think he’s like a third point guard he doesn’t make mistakes he’s a professional he knows how to like move the ball and get it

Done but when the Blazers were hurt and they needed him to step into a bigger role um they they that was the worst stretch of the season for him um cuz he’s just like not a starting point guard that doesn’t mean that he’s can’t continue to be a third point guard

Somewhere else and he wouldn’t be helpful and in sort of a um you know break the glass backup roll type of thing I think he’s um I I think his just sort of heady play Can it can be helpful but um with the guards that they have

And with with the sort of Health situation with those guards that they have I get why they I get why they did it so this puts them down they went from 15 players in the roster they’re now down to 13 uh the NBA rules is that you

Can carry up to 14 players or you can carry 14 players for up to two weeks or excuse me you can carry fewer than 14 up to two weeks you got to carry 14 so this 13 is just it’s temporary at some point they’ll make a move there’s a variety of

Ways they can make moves one now you can officially sign 10-day deals so you can sign veterans and um to you know and free agents to 10-day little trial runs hey come play come play for a little bit uh and if you work we’ll sign you to another 10day another 10day and then

Eventually we’ll sign you to the rest of the year or whatever it might or it’s trade season and if they make a lopsided trade which it just seems inevitable that these that by waving both players they kind of know that some roster moves are coming the the one obvious roster move

That’s coming is that du breath is going to get converted to to a um to a from a two-way contract to a standard NBA deal uh du played his 23rd game he’s been active for 24 games and the way it works for two-way players is you can be active

Like on the active roster for 50 games before you have to be converted um to before you that’s how many games you have eligible in the two-way spot then you got to be converted if you want to keep playing to a regular two-way or regular NBA contract uh duath is

Like solid um he’s he’s his impact numbers suggest that he’s good like just straight up the most positively impactful player on the roster um he provides a shooting element that the other bigs on the roster don’t have and I think here’s in preparing for this episode here’s the most telling stat for

Duop wath the most telling stat that I that I uncovered I said how many doops how many games says do up not not appeared in one two uath is a 27y old rookie who started on two-way contract and went to the G League to begin the season for one

Night scored 37 said I’m too good to be here and they said we agree in the games that he has been active he has picked up one dnp CD out of 24 games the other 23 he’s been in the he’s been in the rotation pretty much every single night he’s been

Available he has played except for one game against the Warriors who go small and the Blazers went to try to match it that’s pretty good for duath that’s pretty good for your first opportunity in the league is that every single night he plays good for him so he’s going to

Get converted like I think that’s just a foregone conclusion he will get a standard NBA deal so that’ll put them back up to 14 and then if they want to carry 14 for the rest of the season there’s no rules against it they could fill the 15th spot with a rotating cast

Of 10day guys to get a different look at a whole bunch of people um they could keep the spot open cuz you only need 14 um and they just like don’t want to pay people more money it’s not much money but it’s theirs uh or if in a in a

Relatively likely scenario which they were to trade away a veteran say Malcolm Brogden the name I’ve been yelling that they have to trade for a couple weeks now um and they were to get back two players they have a roster spot open for them uh and and and that way they

Can it it it has simplified their decision- making they’ve and You’ and Wayne Wright who wasn’t going to be part of the plan and Skyler Mays who just there isn’t room for him with with the guard situation and their need for for bodies in the front Court they can go

Pursue other opportunities they can go get 10 days they can go sign uh contracts you know short-term deals or whatever it might be with with other teams and the Blazers can move forward with with their opportunities and with roster space to make make moves um you know obviously they could still wave

Moop Brown if that comes to it but it seems like this was they made the decision on who it was going to be and uh they went with two guys because they’re going to need du up and then they’re going to they want some flexibility or at least the option for
