It was an enjoyable basketball game uh there are some positive takeaways from this one but we’ll talk talk about my key takeaways some of the game Flow stuff we’ll do individual studs and Duds all that on the show here today um also I’m going to tease a bit of a soap box

That I’m I’m thinking about getting on here this week based on some of the uh admittedly a bit of a straw man um here because of some of the social discourse surrounding this wolves you know we’ll call it a swoon losing three out of four

With two B’s Two e cken all right real quick um I want to talk on Tuesday’s show about this idea that the wolves are like hitting this weird wall you know they’re five and five in their last 10 and I guess factually that is true compared to how

They started the year but like hey let’s look at some of the top seeds from the last several years in the playoffs like unless you’re talking about the you know the nine Lost Warriors or the 10 lost Bulls from 25 30 years ago whatever that was 25 26 years

Ago um like teams are going to lose games I mean we’re we’re talking about a little over the third of the way through the season the wolves are still on Pace to win 50 plus games like um this is a really tough schedule so like I I do

Want to talk about that this is an excuse making this is we talked about this on Friday show before the Houston win because how quickly do we forget Houston’s not a bad team they’re really good at home the Wolves held them to what 95 points on Friday night um the

Wolves are fine they’re a good team I want to break down that a bit you give some context to the whole thing a couple of comments that I noticed on social media people complaining about the L up and the wolves like just that like sometimes good teams lose to other

Good teams and that’s actually a perfect segue into talking about this game because the Wolves had not yet played a full strength Dallas team the first time there was no Kyrie Irving it was right after the initial heal injury to Kyrie in early December and then they played

Them with no Luca the last time around uh no Luca because Dallas was on a back toback just a couple of weeks ago and the Wolves beat them with no Luca and no Kyrie now Kyrie Iran’s come back here since he came back on New Year years and the Mavericks are now three

And one since he came back now their two wins were both against Portland um both home games against Portland by the way the weird like double home game against the same team they got blown out on the road by Utah Kyrie’s first game back then they beat Utah excuse me beat

Portland twice at home and then beat Minnesota in this game so the Mavs are obviously far more dangerous when Kyrie Irving’s on the floor and as we talked about the last time the Wolves played the Mavs like there’s nobody else and this is one of the reasons why I think

Dallas is a very they’re better than mediocre but they’re not going to be a top four seed in the West because there’s just no true depth to this team right you’re relying on catching lightning in a bottle with Tim Hardway Jr Off the Bench and then elite shot

Making from Kyrie and Luca and that’s kind of the extent of it everybody else is a true role player and some of them are are more limited than you’d like them to be if you truly want to be a top four seed in the conference I actually

Really like the way the Wolves match up with Dallas and this game was actually a good example of that Minnesota played okay but there was nothing about this that ever felt like hey the wolves are going to win this game they’ve got this in control but you look up and they’re

Up six with four minutes to play and this is a perfect example of because the Wolves can match up with both Luke and Kyrie because they have jadeen McDaniels and they have Nik Alexander Walker and they have Anthony Edwards who are all Plus Perimeter Defenders plus point of attack Defenders they’ve got obviously

Strong backline defense with Rudy goar and other defensive pieces that are adequate with Kyle Anderson and um and uh uh Mike connley Good Team Defender so this is actually the wolves are a team that can match up well with Dallas early in the game I felt like Dallas pushed

The pace to a point that was maybe a little uncomfortable for Minnesota and and and the Wolves don’t want to play with that level of pace Dallas ended up scoring 30 in the first quarter but they were still only up one like Minnesota hung with Dallas despite the pace

Getting a little bit beyond what Minnesota wants to play at right um second quarter kind of the same thing the Wolves got it back under their control a little bit Jordan mlin you know slowed things down a little for Minnesota um and the Wolves were still a

Minus three in the the quarter but they werein a bucket there right up until the end and ended up just being down four at halftime but it easily could have been more um and then the third quarter was kind of more the same in fact Dallas extended their lead and this was a

Nine-point game by the end of the third quarter the the smaller Dallas did like just a the other thing about Dallas is they’re so small and especially with guys Missing You know guys out um this was what Dwight Powell who was in some file trouble in this game and that was

Kind of it like Grant Williams is not big um Derrick Jones Jr is not big like Dwight po was the only big on the floor and this small Mavericks team despite the small Mavericks team despite getting crushed on the glass and in the paint um this Mavericks team got

The Wolves bigs into TR into foul trouble in this game both Rudy goar and Carlon towns got into early foul trouble uh and I say I say crushed the Wolves were a plus seven on the glass they were a plus six in terms of points in the

Paint and yeah those margins should be bigger if you’re a wolves fan because um you know because of the size advantage and because the wolves have two all NBA bigs and Rudy goar and Carl th towns and another really good one in Oz Reed but

All that to say Dallas did a good job getting both cat and Rudy into foul trouble I mean Kat picked up his fourth foul within 30 seconds of the start of the third quarter um and some cheapies in there and not cheapies in the sense

That they were bad calls one of them was um which one was it there was one bad one in there uh on cat it wasn’t the fourth one I think it might have been his third fall um cheapies in the sense that it’s it’s the silly fouls right

Like if you’re going to get called for a foul earn it make it make it be because you’re making an aggressive play on the ball or whatever but C picks up these kind of like his fourth foul was he couldn’t quite get an offensive rebound so instead of he couldn’t tip the ball

So on his way down he grabbed I think it was Derrick Jones shoulder like or Dwight Powell’s shoulder like why man you’re not gonna get the ball you’re right in front of the ref you’re going to get called like don’t do that stuff right those types of fouls and Dallas

Did a good job but they were also trying to guard towns with with Smalls down the stretch worked a little bit but then cat got kind of hot at the beginning of the fourth quarter and and he was a big reason why the Wolves ended up building

A multiple possession lead um a and you know late in the game defensively I thought Jade McDaniels and Anthony Edwards did a really good job there were some really fun antson Kyrie POS possessions he picked Kyrie’s pocket in the first half picked Luca’s pocket in the second half anted McDaniels used his

Length I thought very well Kyrie Irving and Luca Don are both just really really good and that’s what this game really boiled down to was elite shot making from elite players I want to talk a little more about that I also want to talk about what happened on the stretch

For Minnesota a couple of rough offensive possessions uh one really just in transition giving up a possession to Dallas that allowed the Mavs to take a lead that they never relinquished in the final couple of minutes so I want to talk about the final few possessions of

This one the Timberwolves were of course trailing for the majority of the game as we talked about already and then Minnesota takes a lead ant hits a hits a tough jumper um I think that was on the left side of the floor forces of Mavs time out the wolves are down to the

Wolves going to stop on defense come down cat hits a three-pointer to put Minnesota up one with just over five minutes to play cat scores again the next time down after they get a stop and a Kyrie Miss um actually cat gets an and one on that one wolves are up four then

After a little bit more of a back and forth ant hits another shot the wolves are now up 106 with just under four minutes to play the BS come down they get an and one for Dwight Powell McDaniels fouls Powell he makes the shot makes the free

Throw now it’s a three-point game after a wolves timeout um they try and get ant going you know try and get him another shot because he’d hit a couple of tough jumpers right before that he misses a three-pointer the the Mavs completely loaded up on him really kind of right

Above the break on the right side of the floor and ant basically had two guys guarding him and he was trapped and so he just decided I’m going to shoot this because they’re not really contesting me they’re just TR trying to contain me it actually despite the fact he was double

Covered it actually wasn’t a terrible look he gets enough elevation on his jumper and I think the Mavs were surprised he shot it but he missed um and then and then the Mavs called another timeout and by the way I thought Jason kid did a good job utilizing those

Timeouts to keep the wolves from staying in a rhythm like the the one was maybe um I guess the right before that the Wolves had called a timeout but then Jason kid called a couple of consecutive timeouts which was very smart and there after a wolves miss a lot of times

Coaches won’t call that timeout because the Wolves didn’t score right and you’re still just down three you just had a stoppage before that but kid calls a timeout and uh the Mavs come out Kyrie hits a hits a jumper hits a three-pointer to tie the game

Then after the Wolves uh don’t score on their end McDaniels missed a quarter three which by the way we I’ll get back to that McDaniels misses a quarter three um Kat gets a a block on Kyrie irvy the ball goes out of bounds and was fortunate he wasn’t fouled out on that

On that particular play or I guess maybe fifth foul at that point Kyrie loses the ball McDaniels does an outstanding job stays straight up Kyrie loses the ball goar picks it up but then Irving strips it away from Rudy like a split second later so the wolves briefly had possession but Rudy couldn’t

Couldn’t hang on to it Kyrie strips it somehow stays in Bound in bounds and then ends up hitting a three-pointer to put Dallas up three and they never look back that was the first critical mistake the wolves made cat misses a three-pointer on the other end I thought

The look was fine um that wasn’t great and then um he goes back and forth still a three-point game and then goar gets the ball on a roll to the basket stops short of commited a charge tries to kick it back to the perimeter misses ant

Throws it out of bounds on the other end of the floor Dallas is up three they score go up five and then from that point it’s never closer than five points and the Mavericks win um that those two turnovers were the were the biggest problems down the stretch but I also

Want to point out cat got two decent looks one of them was a little rush the Wolves ran an out of bounds play to get Catal look when they were down three and he missed it I he didn’t quite have his feet set we’ve seen him make that three

Before uh you know at the top of the floor right right above the top of the Ark um straight away that’s his favorite spot we know that um but still he had a couple looks both were good not great and McDaniels had an open three-point attempt in the quter that he

Missed I mean odds are they’re going to make one of those three right that’s two 40% three-point point shooters which by the way I saw somebody on on Twitter I think it was a response to John krinski John krinski tweet talking about McDaniels the Wolves needed to find a

More natural fit there at the four uh or at the three to start that could knock down threes that’s a better shooter Jade mcdel was 41% or over 40% last year and coming into this game 38% from three like he’s a good three-point shooter so anyway um that’ll be part of my Tuesday

Soapbox rent um you know you make one of those and this thing is a tie game right it was a three-point game when McDaniels missed and when C missed one of those two three actually I think when he missed both of them it was a three-point game so all those are potential game

Time threes that they just miss and those are two 40% three-point Shooters sometimes you just miss shots down the stretch right um so key takeaways let’s start here uh if you wanted to watch Superstars play basketball this game was a ton of fun minus the Luca complaining that’s that’s

Maybe a completely separate soapbox I don’t want to get into tonight Luca was great though Luca was fun to watch minus the complaining he was great took him 26 shots to get his 34 I thought overall the Wolves did okay on him picked his pocket a couple of times that was fun

But he had 34 and eight had a couple of Next Level passes just did did crazy Luca stuff um five of 12 from three he what do you do like the Wolves did an okay job on it Kyrie was actually slightly more efficient um 35 well actually about the

Same efficiency 35 points on 27 shots six of eight on threes for Kyrie uh just was so so good uh by the way Luca only got to the line eight times which is pretty pretty much a win for the wolves um kyri had five assists to three turnovers Luca had eight assists to

Three turnovers um and then Anthony Edwards for the Wolves had 36 on 27 shots we’ll talk more about him he had 10 boards he had three assists to two turnovers so um like to me the headline for this game is the Dallas Mavericks had two superstars the Wolves had one

Superstar in terms of how they played right like luuk and Kyrie played like how they how you need a superstar to play if you’re gonna win ant played how you need a superstar to play well Dallas had twice as many Star level performances in this game cat was good

Late but he was in foul trouble early and missed those two threes late so like the body of work in the game for cat when he was on the floor was good but that’s the caveat right maybe the Wolves aren’t down so much if he’s not in foul

Trouble that was an issue you know it’s been an issue the last couple of weeks for cat once again um and then also missing those threes late like Tyrie hit his threes and Cat missed them sometimes that’s what happens so the Wolves got you know one and a half star

Performances the Mavs got two the Mavs won by seven like sometimes the math really is that easy and Luca and Kyrie are really good uh second takeaway is those clutch turnovers that I already talked about um by the way this is the only the third clutch loss for the Wolves it’s only

Their third single digit loss they’ve lost 10 games seven of them have been blowouts they lost by three opening nights to the Raptors that ugly like 97 94 game or whatever 9996 something like that they lost uh New Year’s day a week ago to the Knicks by six and then they

Lose this one to the MS by seven all the other losses were blowout losses which you know not great but usually in clutch time the Wolves win it’s the first time all season they’ve lost a game that they LED leading uh that they LED in the

Fourth quarter um so I think that says more about how good the wolves have been through the first onethird of the season in clutch games in close games in general because there just haven’t been that many close losses I think it says more about that than oh no the sky’s fa

Right the last thing is you look at the statistics from this game and we’ll talk more box score stats here in a minute this is a game easily the Wolves could have won and they never at any point did it feel like they were playing their best

Basketball I mean if again if McDaniels hits that corner three if if cat hits one of those two threes this is a tie game in the final minute minute and a half and guess what the wolves have two of the best on ball defenders in the entire league well really three of them

And ant Alexander Walker and McDaniels so you know you hit one you hit two of those shots you probably win right sometimes you just miss shots the last thing is and this will be my Tuesday topic Don’t Panic like don’t panic the wolves are in a stretch of 16

Games against teams that are very likely to be playoff teams very likely to all be six seeds or better and not even be in the play and all teams above 500 and the wolves are I believe now eight and six with two games left in that stretch I mean assuming they split the

Two I I think they will split Orlando and Boston it’s going to be real hard I mean Orlando’s a tough match up they could lose them both and 88 over the 16’s not great but eight and8 against only playoff teams isn’t terrible either and and and and say they split him and they

Go nine and seven fine nine and seven with a couple of back-to-backs uh I think 11 of the 16 Road games and we’ll unpack this later in the week once we have the full picture of it could do a lot worse could do a lot worse this team is still first in the

West and it’s not time to panic it just isn’t schedule gets real soft here in January midl Jan gets real real soft all right I want to close by doing individual studs and Duds we look at some box score stats overall and just kind of look at the the the picture of

Um you know another going back to the to the reasoning of like hey the this never felt comfortable but yet the Wolves were within a possession in the final couple minutes and led by six with four minutes to play and and probably should have won despite all of

Watching on YouTube I’m throwing the graphic up uh Minnesota held Dallas to just over 45% field goal shooting which actually is I shouldn’t say held they allowed Dallas to shoot 45.3% uh overall from the Field Dallas was also 15 of 40 outside the ark which is uh you know it’s a

Palatable number it’s 37 and a half% um you know Dallas as a team overall coming into this game uh they’re middle of the pack in terms of percentage and and their top they’re actually second and three-point rate um but something the Wolves did really well is is something

That they needed to do really well to have a shot in this game and that was rebound the basketball well Dallas a bottom five rebounding team really on both ends of the floor Minnesota got 18 offensive rebounds in this game and overall was a plus seven on the glass

There were a couple of Second Chance opportunities and actually this isn’t technically a second chance opportunity it’s a turnover but that Rudy Kyrie stripping Rudy in the final couple of minutes there that led to the go-ahead bucket for Dallas in what was a tie game at the time I mean that’s effectively a

Second chance opportunity for Dallas there were a few too many of those um by the way all 15 of their offensive rebounds drick Jones Jr Dwight Powell and Kyrie Irving each had five offensive rebounds in this game Kyrie had the hustle play where he Breck the three ill-advised shot Dove over the Wolves

Bench to get the rebound um you know there there’s a few of those plays that Dallas made and Minnesota just didn’t make and uh you know that’s how you lose games Minnesota was a minus two in the turnover category again A plus seven in terms of rebounds they shot one more

Free throw but made one less free throw so Dallas picked up a couple of points there at the free throw line or I guess technically picked up one point but Minnesota kicked away another point there compared to Dallas um so again all those things factor in the Wolves were a

Plus six in terms of points in the paint plus seven on the glass you know in the same neighborhood free throws three-pointers so this is one of those where Dallas had kind of a small Edge in almost every category except for rebounding Minnesota didn’t quite you know expand that margin to where it

Needed to be if they were also going to allow Luca and Kyrie and I say allow if Luca and Kyrie were also going to go off the way that they did because again I don’t think the Wolves did a bad job defensively in either of them like if

You’re going to beat Dallas and you allow them each to to score around 35 points you’ve still got a shot to win if nobody else does anything and and you know taking a half step back to when I was talking about stars like nobody else on Dallas scored more than 12 points

Derrick Jones had 12 points Hardway had 12 Off the Bench a couple guys with nine like that was it and for Minnesota it was ant with 36 cat ended up with 24 but a lot of that was in the fourth quarter he missed those threes late and then NZ

Had 15 he ended up playing 27 minutes because of the foul trouble to both cat and Rudy which side note I mentioned earlier about how Dallas Dwight pow was really the only big that they had at their disposal in this game The Wolves had extended minutes with nas at the

Five and no Rudy no cat in the second quarter we talked I think it was actually Friday’s show last week was it Friday I think it was Friday about um those are some of the Wolves worst lineups this year with nas at the five so notable um overall for

The game Nas was just a minus one in 20 27 minutes obviously that’s not clean because he played a lot of minutes with Rudy and with cat uh but and by the way that plus minus in this game is pretty it doesn’t really do a whole lot nobody

On the Wolves was worse than a minus 7 or better than a plus one in a game they lost by seven so you know it is what it is but all that to say interesting that the small ball Mavs Force the Wolves into playing small ball simply by the

Wolves getting their primary bigs Rudy and got into foul trouble uh very quickly in this game all right individual studs and Duds for this one and then we’ll close it out um for the Wolves obviously ant has to be a stud 36 points on 14 of 27 I

Thought this was a really good ant game per usual there were a couple of you know the ball got sticky he decided to ISO possessions but man the shot making he hit just a nasty Bank Shot actually the bank shot I think is the one that I

I earlier I got that confused with the weird one-legged almost like a Durk wasn’t a fade away but it was like a weird one-legged Runner that he shot from the left side of the floor early in the second half he hit that tough bank shot as he’s been doing a lot more of

Lately late in the fourth he had a tough three um he had a cold three in transition like some of the shot making from ant in this game was Next Level it really was I didn’t really have a problem with his game I thought defensively he was good this was a good

Ant game and it was too bad the Wolves lost 36 points on 14 of 27 so better than 50% from the field five of seven at the line which was a rare game for him recently not getting into double figures in terms of free throw attempts and I

Don’t necessarily think I thought the officiating was actually pretty good in this game um three for six outside the arc for ant again 10 rebounds three assists three steals of those three one actually two were Steals on Luca one was a straight pick pocket the other was

Luca tried to thread a needle and a just stole it the other ant pickpocketed Kyrie with three fouls at the end of the second quarter a gutsy decision from Ant I would even argue not a smart decision but he got away with it and got free

Throws on the other end um just a great a fun ant game for sure um I’m also going to go with I’m gonna go with nas I think Nas did enough he always seems to play well against the Mavs uh 15 to nine Off the Bench like

You know I that’s kind of what you need from from nas when you have cat and Rudy in foul trouble I thought he was okay defensively maybe a step slow it felt like at times in this game but 15 to n for Nas Off the Bench that’s a nice

Performance I don’t really have I I guess I’ll go with Rudy for my third star um I don’t think he was quite as effective in the paint defensively as he’s been for much of this season but he had 17 rebounds the Wolves had to win on the glass and I

Thought he did a good job there um six offensive rebounds one assist one steal for Rudy five turnovers though uh but I thought it was an okay Rudy game I can’t give one to cat just because of the silly foul trouble and then those Miss

Threes at the end you know not a bad cat G by any stretch but um not a stud worthy cat game dud for me jade McDaniels rough Jaden game I thought he was good defensively though and and that’s I actually you know I’ve already said I’m not going to take it back

Because he was brutal offensively I mean he missed five threes including that open one from the corner one of 10 from the field first possession of the game he shot one of those tough like eight Footers that he’s usually so good at six-footers maybe missed it um did have

Four assists no turnovers but um only three rebounds in 37 minutes one of 10 from the field 0 of five from three had a chance to make a a big impact late with that open Corner three that he missed um but again I thought he was good defensively it’s just like you know

These dudes combined for 69 points on you know 20 26 of 53 shooting I don’t know what do you do like it’s not Jaden’s fault necessarily it’s not nqu Alexander Walker’s Fault by the way Alexander Walker only played 13 minutes in this game The Wolves went heavy jadeen

McDaniels heavy ant minutes in this one uh Off the Bench you had 27 minutes to NZ Reed only 20 for Kyle who I thought played pretty good overall after you know he’s struggled he’s played better lately but in general he been not as good this year as he was last year’s uh

13 minutes for mcclaflin by the way jmck Jordan mcclaflin two of seven outside the ark um that’s going to be the rub with him right he’s got to make threes at close to a 40% clip which is a a proposition like his three-point percentage has gone down every year in
