The Toronto Raptors are a bad soap opera…

Michael Grange’s latest piece for Sportsnet suggests Dennis Schroder was initially unhappy with having a bench role but has come around to accepting his new position after the trade for Immanuel Quickley. Why does this report come out now? No idea. Why did NBA twitter react before reading the full article? I have some idea.

The Raptors have a chance to make a deep push. Drama centered on the role a veteran bench guard wanted should not effect this fanbase or this team, but it’s exactly reports like this that divide a locker room that’s struggling mightily to stay together.

  1. this is fud, the problem is you youtubers taking anything you hear and spreading the b.s. just for views. selfish and ridiculous. Add michael grange to that list as well.

  2. This season should be called:
    The Curious Case of Christian.

I wish him well, and I wonder how he's able to do workouts, (individual) with respitory issues.

  3. Trade Dennis to Knicks for Fournier and a first round pick. Let Barnes and Quickley run the PG. Darko needs to be a coach not a friend. Dennis should only be getting 20 minutes a night and nothing else.

  4. This explains a lot 😂 Dennis is a good player in his role, if he we wants to start I don’t know any NBA teams he can start at pg for

  5. This Dennis situation seems like just something to start drama imo, and if Dennis is indeed upset makes him selfish, childish and just unprofessional. You can’t hold a franchise hostage and deprive them of opportunities from bringing in better players based on your expectations or whatever. If anything that’s grounds for him to be traded as well.

  6. Not every Tweet has merit! Anyone can tweet whatever they want for their own reason! Based on what the team is showing us, why should we gravitate to the negative ? Such wasted emotions!!!

  7. DS just came back from being Fiba mvp and being the only solid pg , the dude is passionate I actually love that a character like that is on the team

  8. Before the season started, Dennis was asked about starting or coming off the bench, and he said that is appreciative that he is playing in the nba and really doesnt matter, he is just about winning. Dennis makes a good 6th man/backup pg, and im sure he knows it.

  9. Resonable insight on sports media literacy. I think Dennis wanted to start for sure but I also think he is a pro roll player – he has had a good career particularly coming off the bench. Part of this boils down to if you think Scottie at point was a good idea. I wasn't surprised he started – he was the best PG we had and the Raps, and I agreed, that you need a guy with handle and burst at PG. Dennis has an incomplete game but he was the best we had. Scottie at PG was not ideal to me but I had sucummed to it – Dennis and the starting line had a chance to prove they could do something and they couldn't – Scottie could have been better than what we were seeing particularly when his shot started falling back to his career averages. A PG is not the same as a quarterback but I'm a bit tradtional and I think it is a foundational position – KL was our best player and backbone of the team for the better park of a decade – Quickley comes in and immediately everyone on the team can play to their strength. Grange is a bit of a weasel – he's up here in Canada kinda acting like a wannabe Woj or Windhorst – he get's out in front of his skiis and gets on my nerves sometimes. Nothing here is unusual or way out of sorts – maybe we told him he would start because we were week at PG – circumstances changed – we got a better player now your moved to the bench – he will handle it professionally. I can't really blame these guys for doing their jobs – no clicks no job. The real way to make this type of junk go away is not having your players pertetually dangling in rumors and win some games. We may be stuck with this until the deadline and I don't know exactly what to do with Siakam but we need to have this squared away for the second half of the season. No matter how professional these guys are they are human and it has to be wearing pretty thin. Last think I will say – I like IQ's game with his speed, shooting and attitude – I think he and Dennis make us solid at PG. Look at the Lakers – with Gabe Vincent hurt you really see how much the Lakers are missing a guy like Dennis. Dennis is a very good and useful player when you aren't asking him to do more than he is capable of.

  10. NBA media sees raptors on the come up, so theyre trying to stir shit up. they never want the raptors happy.

  11. They are 3-1 since the trade and playing great. Stop trying to create drama. It’s a process to get back to the top

  12. This Raptors news is much ado about nothing. The Raptors are not a bad soap opera. Dennis has already moved past being benched and is onboard with the program. You want bad soap opera drama take a look at Golden State or Memphis.

  13. Hmmm, you mean the team owned Media is creating a situation so the casual Fanboys minds will slip away from the impending Siakam trade? Who would of thought.

  14. Dennis starting, lead the Raptors to a losing record, he's a great bench player and 4th quarter finisher. Everything is clicking right now, maybe he's saving face, he thinks his ex teammates are laughing at his role with the Raptors, just a thought.😂

  15. You want to hear from the whiners now so you can move them before the deadline.

Of course players are unhappy when things don't work out. The bench isn't where people plan to spend their time.

Jr opted in because he couldn't get a contract. He can blame himself for the contract year issues. He isn't a PG. He didn't deserve a PG job and no player is owed minutes.

  16. An hour on how the team is a soap opera because of a story about an athlete who wants to play?

I think everyone who heard the story said of course he does and moved on.

You making it out as a thing and calling the team a soap opera is the only thing I've seen trying to turn this into something.

Try ignoring what you don't like instead of helping to turn it into a problem.

  17. 28:49 And here is the reality check of it all. I clown on Dennis but one thing you have to give him props for is his honesty. Even if it is too the detriment from not reading the room. But its true Bouche or GTJ could have easily gone to the media too. But they know the drama storm that will follow will be a disrespect to the team and a bad look upon them. And you wonder why this comes out now?

It's called 'piling on.' Ever wonder why when you turn on the news and one bad story just trumps the one told before it? Yeah, after the devastating news with Hali and Ja a positive story will go against the grain and get blown by in the negative focus media cycle right now. Misery loves company and Dennis drama is just another talking point to add onto. "That's horrible for Mephis and Indy. Oh and did you hear about Toronto now…? It's just like last season…" Piling on keeps you relevant.

TYSM for this Rob, we need to keep up the positive vibes. We need to get offa this emo rollercoaster and as fans we should try to continue to pay it forward and keep riding the BBQ PIZZA PARTY wave. Oh yeah Vote Scottie ALL-STAR!!

  18. The headlines is bench benefit from Shroeder's energy and experience despite him being unhappy he has accepted his role as a bench unit and the headlines about unhappy is a good ways to catch views lol. The article was pretty neutral imo.

  19. The best resolution for drama is u move them, Schröder, Siakim, Trent, Porter, Thad, this is why we keep saying, as long these kind of players are here, Scottie won't have a voice.

  20. I feel like Dennis was promised the opportunity to start, but no sane front office would keep the 5th best starter as a starter if the experiment resulted in a well-below .500 record.

  21. As a fan the only trade I want to see for Siakim is with GSW. We send them Paskal and we get Kuminga Wiggins and a draft pick. I think that’s a fair trade considering Paskal is a proven star and champion

  22. Lmao. I didn’t see this but wow hahaha. Dennis is something else . He’s delusional

The worst part is during preseason Gary spoke very highly of Darko. Who knows if Gary would have came back, but now it’s almost certain he won’t.

I get it, he’s having a bad year, but I don’t think it helps when every time he gets on the court he probably feels like he has to be prime Michael Jordan to get more minutes. Imo they did Gary super dirty. He deserved at least 10 games as a starter to see if he could turn his season around. Too late now after the trade but personally I don’t think he’d be having this type of season if he had time to get in a rhythm.

They trade kyle and bury precious behind jakob totally killing his development , and trade norm for Gary and kill his as well. While precious looked terrible this season, I think people forget how good he looked after he came back from injury last season. Imagine prioritizing Jakob and Dennis over the only players you got in trades from the championship team?

    This organization is confusing

  23. Who likes a good conspiracy? Rogers/Bell vs Tanenbaum/Masia over MLSE’s Raptors/NBA influences has more to do with Grange and Lewenberg hit peace’s then any lockeroom squirrels. Rogers and Bell are money grubbing scum! Why else would they pay their employees to sabotage their own product. Care little about winning. It the power of the dollar they desire in my opinion. Tanenbaum and Masai are Basketball enthusiasts. It about winning.

  24. I think Schröder is a shrewder player than most people think. He plays the fiddle quite well. I wondered why he was a special guest of Lou’s all the time. Dennis says all the right things, building up his persona… I thought Lou was ‘starstruck’… I could see it on his face. I liked Dennis when he was on other teams. Did Dennis not make some comments on the negative atmosphere on the team? Which bicycle was Schröder riding on? I could not hear his laughing and quiet comments on bonding and doing the right thing. Also, why isn’t Scotty or Otto on as a regular guest on Lou’s show? 🎻

  25. Hey Rob, if you had an opportunity to have Raptors player cameo on your channel other than Scottie, who would it be?

  26. Hey Rob. I was just thinking that whatever doesn’t and hasn’t made sense this season always seems to come down to some grand trade scheme and four dimensional chess stuff by Bobby and Masai(sp?). I can only think that they brought Dennis here “to start” knowing that at the deadline, he’s be a piece in a larger trade. Case in point, Malakai Flynn.

  27. Rob, it's always seems to be Lewenberg and Grange the elephants in the room followed to some extent by Smith. Also, as i recall when Dennis was with the Celtics he announced he was worth an $80 million contract. Danny Ainge showed him the door and he eventually ended up with the Lakers.

  28. Of course he was frustrated when he was told he was being taken from the starting lineup. What competitive point guard wouldnt be frustrated if he was first promised that it would be his team to lead and then he had to digest the news that it wasnt his team anymore to lead anymore and was being benched. Im glad he was frustrated. This is non news.
