Hey magic fans here is the let’s talk magic podcast game preview otherwise known as a slice of bacon and uh sorry it’s been missing for uh the last three games but uh real life took over unfortunately but we are back we are back so tonight the magic are back home
In Orlando for the visit of Atlanta and let’s be honest the magic o Atlanta one for the um earlier season loss in Mexico um which was classed as one of our home games this is Magic regular season game number 36 and we are back in the Kia
Center in Orlando It’s a UK tip time of 11:00 p.m. which is 600 p.m. in Orlando little bit earlier than normal so uh actually an opportunity to watch the first half without it being a ridiculously late start for us uh here in the UK so that’s a bit of a bonus uh
To watch in the UK you will need an active NBA league pass subscription unfortunately as is so often the case uh let’s talk about the magic first as we always do uh our record is 20 and 15 at this moment in time we won our last game
Out and are four and six in the last 10 played the home record is 12-4 technically in the K center it’s 12 and3 as uh has been mentioned many times by the uh David steel commentary teams and uh we are standing sixth in the East which is we are actually tied five fifth
Through eighth with Miami Indiana and Cleveland scoring 1138 points per game and conceding 112 uh offensive rating of 22nd and defensive drop back slightly to the fourth position but the offensive rating is uh a little bit improving now with recent results as we’ just seen there Orlando have got pulled back into the
Battling pack uh um fighting for the automatic playoff positions um and everybody’s looking to pull free of the playin ranks unfortunately for Orlando the injury crisis that we are currently going through has come at also the most one of the most difficult parts of the schedule that being said the magic are
Still trying to play their own physical defense based basketball and the losses that we have seen haven’t been met with excuses just in attitude of needing to do better in the next game incredible spirit that this team is showing last time out um let’s start first of all
Because I’ve missed a couple of previews magic started this road trip on New Year’s Eve uh hardfought loss in Phoenix to the Suns by 10712 uh followed up by two further defeats on a backto back uh to Golden State 115 to 121 and then ot to uh
Sacramento by 135 to 138 both of those results were a bit heartbreaking in all honesty um the gods day one really we had a good opportunity to win and Sacramento were it not for um a couple of bad decisions if you look at the NBA officials uh last
Two minute report there’s a 25 second spell at the end of that game where we had we were on the back end of three incorrect calls all had an impact on that game unfortunately but we don’t make excuses that’s not necessarily the reason we lost that game however let’s talk about
The last game the trip was closed out by an incredible one 122 to 120 effort over the defending Champions Denver Nuggets in Denver we had nine players available at the start of that game we were severely hampered and especially even more so when four minutes in and already
Ill Anthony black had to withdraw from that game so we had eight players remaining for the rest of the game Cole Anthony clearly in severe discomfort genuine pain from the Quad contusion that had kept him out of the previous game every impact you could see him wincing traval and queen um working with
Swollen eye stitches after uh the sabonis screen call it that I won’t go any further um incredible third quarter recovery by the team in in the Denver game trailing by as many as 18 and it gave the magic the platform to go on and take the game Paulo banero brilliant got his first
Career triple double with 32 points 10 rebounds and 11 assists he also had three steals making him one of only seven players in all NBA history with a 30110 game before turning 22 year old the company is in there Michael Jordan LeBron James Magic Johnson isah Thomas
Steph Curry and Luca Dage it’s not bad company for the uh the magic star man to be in uh jayen Jaylen sugs another great game from him career best seven threes as part of a career high 27 points Cole Anthony despite not being 100% fit he
Scored 23 points Mo Vagner Point uh 19 points and 11 rebounds for a double double on a night where he had some foul trouble going up against yic but he had next to no cover he was uh on the court an awful lot starting unit was Anthony black Jaylen sugs tumer KK Pao
Banero and mo Vagner uh From the Bench Cole Anthony Caleb Houston Admiral scoffield and traveling Queen excellent effort from those guys as to tonight uh France Vagner is out he’s missing a second game through the ankle injury sustained in Sacramento goou Bazi Anthony black are both listed as day-to-day and questionable with the
Illness that saw them um miss the Denver game wend Carter Jr he is again listed as day-to-day and questionable with the knee injury Marquel folz also shown day to-day and questionable with the left knee ten anitus he’s remaining apparently a game time decision uh having missed the last 27 fixtures Gary
Harris he is unfortunately confirmed as out with a cal injury Jonathan Isaac he is also listed as out with a right hamstring soreness Joe Les is again confirmed as out with a no time table to return He last played in Boston on December the 15th left ankle sprain for
Him guy we are really really missing as I wrote this and I’m recording this there was absolutely no news on JET Howard he’s he was on a g-league assignment but you have to imagine that he’s going to be brought back into the squad we need that body there and
Finally Keon Harris he’s simply still listed as being out as a coach’s decision again he’s not suited up for the team particularly um supposedly recovering from a knee injury as to the Atlanta Hawks uh season so far 14 and 20 record they lost their last game and are as per the magic four
And six in their last 10 played stand 11th in the East they are scoring for fun they are third in the league in scoring points one 22.6 per game equally they concede an awful lot and they concede more than the score which is 1239 points per game that’s the 28th
Most conceded points per game in the league uh ranking offensively at fifth defensively 29th on the road the Hawks are nine and 11 so far this season no team no team in the NBA shoots the ball more than the Hawks do on average they take 94 shots per game with 39 of those
Coming from three-point range they make 44 shots per game with 14 being on the three they lead the league in offensive rebounds and shoot the third most free throws per game as you can tell though from the amount the score from the amount that they are conceding the Atlanta defense
Has been relatively ineffective All Season you can’t ignore what Trey young is doing this season he is putting together a set of really good figures he’s top 10 in so many categories on the offensive end including seventh for points per game with 27.7 points uh second for assists 11.1 per game ninth
With 1.5 steals per game um scoring’s coming in many ways for Atlanta uh aside from Trey young Deontay Murray 20.9 points per game uh Bogdan bogdanovic 17.7 Jaylen Johnson 15.1 DeAndre Hunter 14.9 sadique Bay 12.7 and Clint capella 11.9 and besides the double digit scoring Clint capella is a gain dominant
Shot blocking and rebounding he he leads the league on the offensive boards last time out for the Hawks they took an absolute toning uh 116 to 150 Road loss in Indiana uh Jean Murray he led the team with 30 points and Trey young had a
Bit of an off night only 13 points on four of 18 shooting uh going only one of 11 from range starting five was Trey young jonty Murray Sadi Bay Jaylen Johnson and clink capella um and as to tonight DeAndre Hunter and muhamad gay are out I expect I would suggest that
The Hawks will go with that same starting five as against Indiana with Bay again coming in for Hunter head-to-head for the magic with the Hawks 132 regular season games played and the score stands at 6270 to the Hawks last two seasons the Hawks have taken taken the series 3-1 um the magic
Have only won two of the last 12 encounters that we’ve had with the Hawks the last time Orlando won a series it was 201819 season where we took it 4-0 second meeting of the season um four games in total that we will play um it was part of the NBA Global games the
Magic traveled to Mexico City for the home fixture against the Hawks and it’s tight hard for game and Orlando came away defeated by 120 to1 19 um missed too many free throws in that game in all honesty as to final thought Orlando will definitely need another Allstar level performance from
Paulo banero across the four game Road Trip he averaged 32.5 points per game 8.8 rebounds 7.3 assists in every game he scored at least 27 points the trip included a career-high 43 points and his first care career triple double against the defending champions in Denver Orlando again are under man but it won’t
Change the game plan for this team we are a defense first team um it won’t change that Unity or spirit that the team have also Atlanta interestingly are bottom four in the league for giving up points in the paint and second chance opportunity for Orlando these are keys
And there are areas that we can try to exploit on the offensive end and they are actually strengths of the magic so we will have opportunities even under strength and who knows we may find that one or two of those game time decision people are actually available if you
