A Kispert comparison and question

I was listening to a recent Dunc’d On Prime (highly recommend!) [episode](https://duncdon.supportingcast.fm/listen/duncd-on-prime/9-in-87-eastern-conference-1923) and they focused on Corey Kispert and the season that he is having. They talked through his value and player archetype.

They brought up Doug McDermott as a comparable player because they are both very good shooters who are pretty efficient but also don’t really contribute in other parts of the game (very low rebounds, blocks, steals, assists). I think Kispert rates as a slightly better player because he is already shooting with higher volume from three and with better efficiency overall. But they’re really similar.

My question is, would you be happy with Kispert remaining in DC throughout his career if he’s retained on similar relative contracts that McDermott was paid throughout his career? His second contract was give or take 85% of the non-taxpayer MLE and his third contract was about 40% above the NTMLE. Both for three years and McDermott is now falling off at age 32.

Would this be viewed as a net positive career in DC if it goes like McDermott’s did? I think yes and that it’d be worth it to keep him but interested in others thoughts.

Bonus: both Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux agreed that they would prefer Aaron Nesmith on his contract moving forward over Deni Avdija. I think with the shooting potential that I’d have to probably agree but that’ll be an interesting one to monitor.

  1. I’m not in the habit of watching McDermott since his Creighton days but did they mention anything about Joe Harris? That’s who corey compares with to me. Harris also will dunk on you from time to time.

I think when you look at Corey’s current role it makes sense why he’s not getting tons of boards or blocks or assists. His job is to go out there and get buckets, largely 3s. How are you getting a rebound shooting a stepback 3-pointer? What consistent level of assists are you possibly getting when you are in there to get the team points and to your left and right are Delon or a Rookie or one of our 47-year-old bigs?

I don’t really care about his salary, just want him to continue to get better as he has been doing. Certainly when he got drafted nobody in here thought he was capable of doing all the things he’s exhibited.

    Also the bonus:

Haha, can’t wait to see the reactions to this

  2. I imagine him like a Joe Harris type. Won’t ever be a star player, but he will have a very long career as a role player and make a decent chunk of change when all is said and done.
