I do want someone like DMitch but signing in Free agency is rare (and crazy OP) Only reason why Nets have Bridges, Johnson, 4 picks and an actual Hope for the future is bc they wasted nothing on KD&Kyrie and got a massive haul instead of losing them for nothing

We also signed Randle in free agency, along with both hartenstein and divo. Free agency has been the best part of the current front office regime (sans Fournier)
What does this have to do with anything? We’re not projected to have cap space any time soon, so we were never signing anyone in free agency.
OG re-signs this offseason, then Brunson the offseason after, and we’re going to be well over the cap for foreseeable future, so free agency isn’t how we’re getting anything done.

some guys are just identified through great gm decisions and unlocked. sabonis, gilgeous alexander, markkanen were under the radar trade throw ins turned into allstars. we need to look at potential guys waiting to be unlocked, not just the established stars.

Just to play devils advocate extensions don’t really mean much in the NBA where players have all the power. They sign an extension then hold their team hostage to trade them to a short list of their preferred destinations
Not all extensions are created the same, you can’t just lump all of these guys together.
Like, Giannis took an extension because the front office proved that they’d go out of their way to keep the team competitive by getting Dame. That’s a guy who is for all intents and purposes off the market.
Somebody like Edwards, that’s just a young guy getting his first big pay day. It’s not the same thing, that’s the “nobody turns this down” extension.
Kyrie’s, that was a “if we don’t pay you we’re screwed” extension.
This is why the idea that we will simply let Fournier’s contract expire is nonsense. Any star we acquire is going to be via a trade, and having a big contract for salary matching purposes is necessary so we can hold onto our valuable role players. It’s also why trading for a guy like Brogdon makes so much sense.
