Scottie & RJ have a BEEFY history

Five years before they became teammates in Toronto RJ Barrett and Scotty Barnes were two of the most decorated high school basketball players of all time in fact RJ played his final High School game ever against Scotty Barnes and the results were not what you might expect

Coach Kevin Bole who coached the eagles with players such as Ben Simmons and Joel embiid opined at the time that the 1718 modd Eagles might be his most talented team ever on the other hand you had Scotty Barnes and Vernon Cary leading the university school a team which had started out the season

Unranked but had risen to third throughout a dominant campaign by Barnes and carry Scotty sharks had beaten the number two ranked Oak Hill while barretts Eagles had bested Finley prep to set up an all Florida National Championship if people didn’t know who Scotty was at the start of the year they

We’re just trying to finish it a monster and has been here at the Geico Nationals hord unbeaten on the season wearing the gray University School game the last two years 6 seven with great length the ability to push and his greatest asset to deliver the Rock by halftime and

Andrew neard layup pushed it to 3526 halftime was not pretty Barnes started out the third quarter by hitting a corner three as Raptor fans know today Scotty Barnes is known for dominant second halfs and he was not about to let his team lose on the next play Just

Seconds later Barrett showed some stage presence hitting a three of his own not to be bested the duel was on Barnes went down the other way to hit a layup unfortunately for him he came down awkwardly on a teammate’s foot ever the warrior he stayed in the game he didn’t

Quit but with Barnes now favoring his ankle and the score 3138 the eagle sense blood closing out the third quarter the score had ballooned to 41- 59 before Scotty drew a triple team and found Vernon Cary open for a three the fourth quarter was more of the same but Scotty

Did not go down without getting a technical and some few Choice words in for Barett whether he’s 4 for 10 or 9 for 10 whether his team has a lead or they’re Behind and he has that special trait to give it his all all the time sounds simple but I don’t see a lot of guys that play hard every game every possession the maple Mamba ended his high school basketball career with a national championship completing a resume which already included a gold

Medal with Canada for the U7 FEA championships the commentators who were clearly familiar with both players players spent most of the fourth quarter commending Scotty’s effort in the loss painting a very bright picture of his future Barrett was the better player on the better team that day and before Zion

Williamson and John Morant blew up he was the projected number one pick in the following year’s draft and ironically it was Scotty Barnes himself who transferred to mber to effectively replace RJ’s vacant spot in the front court with Kate Cunningham to form what many call the greatest high school

Basketball team of all time Barnes and Barrett have a complicated history they would both go on to have impressive Collegiate careers and both would go on to become top five picks in the NBA Barnes going forth to the Raptors and RJ going third to the Knicks over the years

Theyve spent time guarding each other and RJ even had this huge buzzer beating dunk over Scotty Barnes less than a year ago to send the Knicks to overtime just a year later their teammates for RJ’s Hometown Toronto Raptors after the Raptors traded Scotty’s best friend on

The team OG an anobi Scotty for his part doesn’t completely seem to be over it no I think that defense that he plays is something like had a similar teammate that had the same type of Defense I those guys you know they’re unselfish um you know they’re playing hard each and

Let’s Paint the picture. This is RJ Barrett, a Canadian superhero who was a senior at Montverde, committed to play at Duke, son of Canadian basketball royalty Rowan Barrett, the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year, Naismith Player of the Year, Gatorade player of the Year and Morgan Wootten Player of the Year. He… had a big resume.

He was the number 1 ranked player in the nation, playing for the number 1 ranked team in the nation, flanked by a talented backcourt duo of Michael Devoe and Andrew Nembhard. RJ’s Montverde team was STACKED – Head coach Kevin Boyle who’d coached the Eagles with players like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid opined that the 17-18 Montverde Eagles might be his most talented team.. ever.

On the other hand, you had Scottie Barnes & Vernon Carey leading the University School – a team which started out the season unranked but had risen to third throughout a dominant campaign by Barnes & Carey and managed to end the year ranked third.

Scottie’s Sharks had beaten #2 ranked OAK Hill while Barrett’S Eagles had bested Findlay Prep to set up an ALL-FLORIDA National Championship. If people didn’t know who Scottie was to start the year, they were about to find out.

The game started close but by halftime an Andrew Nembhard layup pushed it to 35-26. Barnes started out the third quarter by hitting a corner 3. As Raptor fans today know, Scottie Barnes is known for dominant second halfs, and he definetly wasn’t about to let his team lose. On the very next play, Barrett shown some stage presence by hitting a 3 of his own. Not to be bested, Barnes went down the other end and went up for a layup. He came down awkwardly as he came down on a teammates foot but ever the warrior and fighter… Barnes stayed in the game.

He didn’t quit, but with Barnes now favoring his ankle, and the score 31-38, the Eagles sensed blood. Closing the third quarter, the score had ballooned to 41-59 before Scottie found Carey for a wide open 3 after drawing a triple team.

The fourth quarter was more of the same but Scottie didn’t go down without a technical and a few choice words for Barrett, who ended his high school career with a National Championship to complete a storied prep career which already included a Gold Medal in the U-17 FIBA Championship with Canada.

The commentators who were clearly familiar with both players spent most of the fourth quarter commending Barnes and painting a bright picture of his future.

Barrett was the better player on the better team that day – and before Zion Williamson and Ja Morant blew up, he was the projected number 1 pick in the following year’s draft. Maple Mamba had won.

And it was Barnes who transfered to Montverde to effectively replace RJ’s vacant spot in the front court the following year for the Eagles when he went on to team with Cade Cunningham to form what many call the greatest high school team of all time.

Barnes and Barrett would both go on to have impressive collegiate careers at Duke and FLorida State University in 2019 and 2020 respectively, and both would go on to be top 5 picks in the NBA- Barnes going fourth to the Raptors and RJ going third to the Knicks.

Over the years they’ve spent time guarding each other, and RJ even had a HUGE buzzer beating dunk over Scottie’s Raptors less than a year ago to send the Knicks to overtime.

A year later, they’re teammates for RJ’s hometown Toronto Raptors after the Raptors traded Scottie’s best friend on the team OG Anunoby. Scottie for his part doesn’t quite seem to be completely over it.

There’s a concept that great players can sharpen each other. 2 FORMER McDonald’s All Americans, Gold medalists, prep school legends, both of whom have taken their share of media backlash, both have had highs and lows. RJ Barrett was seen by many Knicks fans as a bust – and Scottie Barnes after winning Rookie of the Year and becoming a media darling spent most of the 2022-2023 season being the whipping boy for a disappointing season in Toronto. They both have a lot to prove. AND alongside 24-year-old Immanuel Quickley, the trio could be the building blocks for the Raptors next championship.

  1. This video shows how knowledgeable Rob is with the Raps and basketball in general. Rob is king of content, rather than just putting out quick vids reporting random tweets from "insiders" around the league.

  2. Ya'll don't see this is two Jamaican boys dem. Tuff man dem. Two oxtails with rice and peas, dem man gonna be good, watch and see. Just two bulldogs that will eventually protect the yard together.

  3. Great video!!!

Scottie went Montverde 2 years after.

It was the 17/18 season, national championship game.

Montverde then failed to win the title the following season after RJ left with Cade, Moody and co.

They then recruited Scottie for 19/20 season, forming that dominant 25-0 team who unfortunately didn't end up getting a chance to go for the title (Covid year).

I doubt Scottie would have agreed to join Montverde immediately after seeing his team lose to Montverde in the championship game.

They likely had to convince him to join.

Scottie very deliberate with his career & what he wants.

(He only went FSU cause of them allowing him to run point guard)

The fact Montverde didn't win the title that year & the team is different from RJ team helps.

When RJ got traded, one of the first things I thought of was how Scottie feels about it.

From what we know about Scottie is he doesn't forget.

Scottie went after RJ & Knicks last season.

    Now there teammates…
As much as Scottie is a nice guy he must feel conflicted seeing a fierce rival on his team.

Even Masai when talking about the trade he didn't really make it seem like RJ was what he wanted & the Raptors future.

It seemed more like he was a throw in & Masai spoke on it like he's the Canadian kid coming back home (good for TV+tickets).

Masai with Quickley mentioned him being a perfect fit with Scottie.

I hope RJ + Scottie can put aside that highschool 'rivalry' & become good friends, develop together and bring a championship back to Toronto.

Scottie, RJ, Quickley, Gradey, (Hopefully Jarace Walker), is pretty good young core.

  4. Awesome bro 💯 i didn’t know the full history. Having two top of their class talents on our squad shows our management still got it

  5. Masterfully done in every aspect, major props to you Rob.

I love the chemistry I'm seeing between these two young guys, they are really finding eachother out there and playing some great basketball. Very excited for the future! Go Raps!

  6. Great video, Rob. They're both such talented players and well-suited to Darko's offence (as is Quickley). The decision-making on the offensive end has been so much quicker since the trade. I feel optimism going into each game with this group that I haven't felt since the 2019-2020 season. OG is a wonderful player, but fit matters so much. I do think he would fit on this team too of course, but getting two good fits for one is huge.

  7. Great video and newsflash to these RJ stans (just when you thought FVV vibes were done): RJ ain’t #1 option on this team.

Some people here are riding on him just because he’s Canadian and throwing Scottie Barnes to the side?
    Weird af.

Masai will move heaven and hell to keep Scottie Barnes — don’t ever forget that.

  8. Awesome video to frame these two — already showing so much chemistry on the court imo. I didn’t pick up on this history though, and neither did most of the media. Great storyline, fantastic presentation

  9. Love your short videos but I have a request. Either no music or back way off on the volume. Maybe it's because I'm older but I find background music while someone is talking over it To be a huge distraction. Thanks anyways and I hope your next short is easier to listen to 😊

  10. A lot of rj vs Scottie in the comments but just know they are both dogs that play for each other. When rj dropped 40 against gsw he gave the credit to Scottie for guarding Steph. These are grown men now this ain’t hs no more they both tryna win something. Maybe root for both.

  11. Man, some of you raptors fans are weasels..l0l How easily you guys don't include pascal. A guy that brought you a champ.. You guys have a sick team.. And you wanna trade pascal.. You don't even have patience.. that said .This was a good video .. I did not know they played against each other.. Scotty and r j..

  12. That was cinematic. Big fan. Also a big fan of Chev. Would love for y’all to collaborate but I know you guys literally don’t mess with each other. Y’all both passionate. The city needs y’all together lol 😂

  13. Where’s all the potel haters at now? Y’all talking about how bad he is yet we can barley get a stop in the paint without him.
