Watch out for Wemby bandwagons hating on Vassel in here.

Dude had a bad game, but any talk about his future with this team or his contract is wack, considering the context of this game

  2. First_Jackfruit_9726

Devin Vassell single handly lost this game

  3. Relatively_Cool_Guy

Fuck! What a fight from the Wemby-less spurs. Shoutout Tre Jones!

  4. Prize_Possession3899

    **Pros**

    * Jones on fire in the 1st half, single handedly keeping the team in the game. Would have had more assists if the rest of the team converted some decent looks. I know his 3pt shooting % isn’t that great, but his form has improved since he got into the league. We could see it tonight (and at times throughout this season) where the arc and trajectory of his 3pt attempts look like they have a way better chance of going in compared to his shots during his rookie year. Ended with a career high of 30pts.
    * Sochan stayed aggressive, especially in the 2nd half where he baited Caruso into a tech. The improvement in the way his 3pt shot looks this season gives me hope that it could become even better down the road.
    * Johnson attacking the defense as usual, with some really nice finishes around the basket while raining 3s
    * Branham finishing in the paint and drilled a couple of 3s. Also had some nice steals.
    * Osman hitting some huge 3s in the 2nd half
    * Barlow once again did the best he could in the minutes he got, battling for rebounds and loose balls matching up with Vucevic and Drummond
    * Wesley making better reads and decisions, posterizing White in the process. Defensive intensity was there as usual.
    * Mamu with some really nice minutes off the bench, helping fuel the comeback

    **Cons**

    * Unsurprisingly, had trouble keeping Vucevic and Drummond out of the paint with the absence of Wemby and Collins
    * Vassell quiet and disappointing night when we expected him to step up in Wemby’s absence, including a costly turnover with 4:52 left in the 4th that led to a pair of Lavine free throws, etc. I haven’t looked it up, but this feels like it must be one of his worst games of his career.
    * Defensively, guys were caught flat footed at times, giving up drives to the basket

    **Overall**

Guys kept battling despite being down as much as 18 at one point. Offense got bogged down at times late in the 4th, but the guys tried to battle back at the end. Just not enough buckets and not enough stops to finish off the game.

    **Looking Forward**

Back on the road for the beginning of a five game road trip, starting with a MLK day nationally televised TNT afternoon game against a potentially more determined Hawks team looking to make amends after suffering a bad loss to the Wizards.

  5. Barbaroooza

    Great game. Not even mad.

Just 2 weeks ago this team would’ve lost by 40.

  6. Completely went away from what got them there but 100% we run em with Victor so I guess there’s that

  7. Bonesawisready5

Wow we win with Wemby. If Devin makes even 2 more shots we maybe win too. Solid game, we are improving so much

  8. Southern_sky

We win if Wemby plays or if Devin shoots even just an average night but ended up shooting terribly. Boys are for sure learning to play better with each other at least

  9. Everlasting_Pugs

I’ve watched a lot of games this season. Devin has had several amazing games, but also had some disappearance performances in winnable games. Hope he’ll become a more consistent player

  10. MikeyBastard1

Tough game for Devin tonight. Just had an off night. Tre really showing out that he can indeed hang with the big boys. This was Keldons first really good game when coming off the bench.

Overall im just happy to see this team play competitively with out Vic on the floor!

  11. Doctor-Bagels

sad loss but I’m feeling pretty good about how we’ve looked ever since that bucks game — we have so much potential in these young guys

  12. The most important thing is that we looked decent without Wemby minus some guys having a off night. One step closer

  13. Empty-Mall-1636

Why is Vassell so streaky? Has a lot to work on offensively

  14. Lone_Star_122

I was touting Vassell as an MIP candidate in the off season…

Safe to say he’s been my biggest disappointment this year

  15. oceanfloors1

Spurs without Dougie, Zach, and Wemby really just put up a solid fight. Bad night for Devin. Easily winnable if his hands were hot.

GG Bully bros. Give us back Demar.

  16. irrelevance_90

Heartbreaking, but still a very fun game nonetheless. Our bench really showed out tonight. Congrats to Tre on his new career high and Keldon really shows his potential as the team’s future 6th man.

On the other hand, rough night for Devin. I thought he was too passive and didn’t attack the rim enough. I’m sure he’ll bounce back and learn how to impact the game even on a cold night like this. GGs all around.

  17. I don’t have a problem with Devin shooting 13 shots and only making 1. I wish he was more aggressive though, 8 of those shots were 3 pointers. I think he’s so much better driving but a lot of times he becomes a bit too passive.

    Wow Tre and Keldon <3

  18. sharkybyte101

If Trae Young is really available… I feel like it’s maybe time to sell high on Devin…

Love the guy but if a bunch of firsts and Devin plus fillers can net us Trae… I would take it.

Note, this is just some random shit I concocted after a bad Devin game and I have not checked how the salary aspect works…. 😅

  19. The fight they showed in the 3rd to overcome that 16 point deficit in half a quarter is a win in my book, record be damned.

  20. siphillis

Great game overall, but the lack of poise when they pulled within two really showed. Rather than settle down and keep doing what got them back in the game, they all tried to hero-ball their way past the Bulls and wound up going scoreless for the last few minutes.

I think Wemby being out there, being the go-to guy, carries us home.

  21. OGWallenstein

I can’t be mad, so much effort from the team. No Zach, no Bassey, and no Wemby. We have either one of those fellas(obviously Wemby) and I think not only do we win this but we win it by a bigger margin. I’m hoping this offseason we can pickup another scorer, whoever that may be. Devin had an off night, wish he would’ve showed up on the defensive end and same with Jeremy but he did bring a lot of energy with second chances and playing great D.

Again, proud of the fellas, we’re really clicking.

  22. effdeezee

not mad at all at this L, the tallest guy the Spurs had on the court was 6’9 trying to outrebound and outmuscle Vucevic and Drummond, it just wasn’t going to work when our only non-injured center is out, but the boys gave a great effort and it was a good game overall. I definitely agree they’re in the statement era since the Bucks game, it’s a new team

  23. rattatatouille

That would have been a win with Wemby.

Also love the trend of winning third quarters for a while now.

  24. android24601

Vassell settled for way too many shots and didn’t drive it in enough to try and get himself going at the line. If you go 1-13 from the field, I’d expect you’d make more of an effort to get to the line. It’s incredibly frustrating watching Vassell sometimes because he’s way more talented than this

  25. Awkward_Toe_5501

Dev is currently fighting and trying to grow from the 3nD stereotype. He’s solid as a 3nD’er however he’s trying to become a threat in the middy and is trying to evolve from catch and shoot to a pull-up/off the dribble shooter.

He’s trying, but it comes with experience and you can’t blame him as those situations come rare since this team has been tanking for the past 2-3 years..so blowouts have come often.

However, we are on a string of very competitive games so he’s learning and getting valuable experience now.

He will get there, he has a $35M reminder.

  26. The criticism against Devin is fine. He has too many stinkers like this when he should be showing he’s one of the top guys on the team. That’s what these games are for and he hasn’t quite been up to the challenge. Pretty disappointing but it’s why we’re stuck at only 7 wins.

Been loving Tre as of late. He isn’t our solution at PG forever, but he’s been a hard worker and has stepped up. Unlike Devin.

  27. Aussie_Spur

Just think of the lottery balls. Todays performance was a real win tonight long term

  28. DevilGunManga

If only we had Devin Vassell tonight instead of whoever it was wearing his jersey out there.

  29. andrei3005

Unfortunate night for Dev man. I’m still super high on him and I think he could be our Middleton to Wemby’s Giannis (pure scorer type next to freak athlete). But the biggest hole in his game rn is his passiveness.

So many possessions this game (and many other games) where he immediately passes it when getting a kick out, beats his man on the pnr but swings it for no reason to someone who isn’t even open, or doesn’t even touch the ball/make meaningful cuts. His jumper was off tn but there were plenty of times where he coulda gone downhill on a pnr to make something happen inside or draw fouls but instead he’d choose to get rid of the ball. No reason for him to be in single digits with weak defenders like Lavine and White on him for long stretches.

I feel like he turns up in national TV games tho so I look forward to him showing out Monday in ATL. This team has a lot of heart and I respect the hell outta these guys for fighting hard every game. GSG

  30. Zen131415

Man every time we play you guys I like you more. Pop is such a brilliant coach, it’s not easy to kill a lead like that. No Wemby tonight but you guys still looked solid. What a game. GGs!

  31. ohyeah_mamaman

Not only did we compete without Wemby, we won another 3rd quarter 😎

The fellas are gelling more and more and honestly just slightly better shooting from Vassell or a couple of plays in the 4th where we slowed down just a little instead of barreling down and flinging a pass haphazardly and this one would have been ours. GSG!

  32. AfroHouseManiac

One thing is for-sure, the spurs back up point guard spot of the future has been solidified unless Tre price becomes unreachable when he’s a free agent..

  33. thedam100

We really really struggled to get a bucket at the end. Ball got really stagnant and it just was 3-4 back to back iso possessions until Pop called time out and it went back to Tre running a play. But they started to load on Tre and forcing the ball out of his hand and into Keldon, Sochan and or Vassell. I assume that’s why Pop put in Cedi because no one was getting shots. Really tough finish.

Some improvements I hope see going forward is hard screens set by sochan. Pop had to correct him on the sideline as he kept ghost screening which forced Tre on an island and everyone just loaded up on him.

Vassell should feel like he needs to score. He can still drive and kick the ball for a hammer play or a wing but he kept forcing a shot up knowing his shot wasn’t falling. He needs to learn to make a scoring opportunity easier for others if it’s not going for himself. Got to learn how to help with offense if you can’t get yours going rather than force shots.

Very confused about champagnie’s minutes. He’s a starter getting 17 mins while everyone the bench except Wesley had more minutes than him. I believe that happened last game as well. I am hoping there is a more consistent decision going forward with champagnie. Not sure if it’s the match up or the lack of depth but it doesn’t really make sense in the rotation at the moment.

Outside the fouling, and the iso ball at the end majority of everyone played fairly well. Sucks that Vassell had an off game. Stayed competitive without Wemby and won a three quarter again. Gives me a good sign “always losing” the 3rd quarter woes is over (knock on wood). Proud of our guys.
