Chuck said this about Devin in Nov and it holds true today

“There’s some players in this league — there’s one on the Spurs who’s a good player, Vassell. He takes the worst shots ever. That’s why he’s always going to be streaky. You can’t survive taking bad shots. You can be a good player, not a great player.”

Devin needs to learn to move better without the ball and hunt for better shots. We have seen him knock down some very tough shots but he can’t make them his bread and butter.

While I agree, especially down the line once we’re truly ready to compete, I think his tendency to take (and often make) tough shots right now while the teams still developing will pay off big down the line and help be a difference maker between a productive 3 and D wing and an actual reliable tertiary option

I think he’s fine I trust him he can fill it up

I’ve been saying this about him for awhile. He can’t be the number 1 guy on the team. He doesn’t play smart. He would be a good 3rd option. But if you depend on his scoring you’re going to lose many games.

Devin struggles because the best defenders are guarding him. It’s tough

  5. This is true. I could be wrong, but I think the best perimeter defender is usually on Vassell.

I think part of what frustrates me about Vassell is that it’s all there. He has all the tools to get it done and has demonstrated this many times over, but doesn’t do it consistently. He has the tools to be a 3 level scorer, but insist on taking bad shots from deep, even when they’re not falling. I don’t know if it’s a lack of confidence, or if he lacks the creativity to work with what the defense gives him to get to the hoop

Something that the whole team does, but is pretty noticable when he does it is not being patient with the ball. When the ball is in his hands, he offloads shots so early in the shot clock and doesn’t look to his teammates for better looks

I think something I’d want to see more from him is to get to the hoop more frequently. If he starts being a more consistent slasher, it’ll not only give him more opportunities to get to the line, but to get his teammates more involved whenever he needs to kick the ball back out to spot up shooters

Also, another crazy thing to think about is how his assist have taken a slight dip from last season, despite adding someone like Wemby. It’s pretty nuts. Some of that 2 man game they’ve demonstrated in spurts could be absolutely lethal if they keep working at it. There’s no reason he can’t average more than 3 assists a game

When Dev gets over his case of the yips, I don’t want to see any of yall in the post game threads praising his name.
