Indiana Pacers embarrassed by Utah Jazz as Jarace Walker has his best game yet

The Pacers get rocked in Utah what on Earth was that a bad performance from a banged up Pacers team plus jerus Walker’s best game as a pro and we’re learning more about the impact of Arin Smith in his absence it’s all coming today on the lockon Pacers podcast you

Are locked on Pacers your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what up y’all happy Tuesday and welcome into another edition of the lockdown Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name’s Tony East I cover the team for

Forbes and Si and today we have a lot to get to Pacers Jazz yuck yuck yuck yuck why did that just happen the Pacers get blown out in Utah Utah’s playing well but that was something else a lot of not a lot went wrong jarus Walker was

Probably the only thing you could point to and say that didn’t go wrong the Pacers leading score had 14 points what the hell we’ll break it all down on today’s lock on Pacers plus jarus Walker’s night and feeling the absence of Aaron nemith who has now missed two

Games in a row and they got smoked without him again tonight what’s going on there let’s look at some numbers behind all that I’m back from Texas I have caught up mostly I watched the Hawks game earlier today before the Jazz game I’ll watch the Nuggets game tomorrow tomorrow today for you guys

Listening we’ll talk about that a little tomorrow and then we’ll be caught up and back we have a nice gap of two games or two days here excuse me between games so we’ll do another trade thing tomorrow and then we’ll be right back to games and catching up on the Tyrese Halbert

And Les Pacers who got their butts kicked my goodness by the Utah Jazz today 132 105 was the final score 27 points I think sells it perfectly I’m the king of leading these shows off with something like I don’t think the score does a good job of describing the game

This time I think 27 points is perfect it was funny because in the first half the Pacers somehow were keeping it between like three and eight but they were never really I think they only had the ball and were down three once the whole first half right so they never

Felt like they had a chance to tie or swing the momentum they were just down and the Jazz had answers and so if while they were down eight it felt like 20 the whole time and then the second half it actually became 20 very quickly took you

Know just like three or four minutes of the second half for the Jazz to completely blow the game open their biggest lead was 29 they were dominating they never trailed in the game and big picture looking at the Pacers if you want to be the guy who points to

Everything that makes this a scheduled loss you could do that and I will do that really quickly I will tell you that this is the hardest back-to-back in the NBA the Utah Denver altitude backtack is brutal it’s almost always a scheduled loss for the second one if it’s Utah

Then Denver maybe you can steal the first one but in the NBA now with the defending champs followed by the Red Hot Jazz that’s as tough as it gets Pacers were down three starters Bruce Brown knee injury the one he had last month that he was playing poorly on and then

Missed five games didn’t play in a back toback Aon n Smith injury didn’t play on Sunday didn’t play on Monday Tyrus howburn as everybody knows has a hamstring injury then during the game Ben maen ankle injury we’ll see what any effects that might have long term and

Isaiah Jackson back injury so three star ERS and five rotation players were out for this game you can is Wong suddenly the Pacers are down to 11 guys James Johnson played in the third quarter of this game at Center because Jaylen Smith had five fouls and Miles Turner had five

Fouls do I need to continue to explain to you what on Earth you could talk about if you wanted to say throw this game in the trash never talk about it again there’s a million reasons the Pacers lost that were you know this wasn’t the Pacers on the other hand even

Without Tyrese Howton they just beat the Hawks they beat the Wizards they’ve beaten the heat even without Bruce Brown they’ve won games even without eron Smith not as many we’ll talk about that they’ve won games even with poor bench play they’ve won games th this was brutal losing by

27 is always rough and they never looked like they had a chance and I know the Jazz are better than them right now especially given the state of the Pacers with injuries but that was something else the Pacers starters all shot 50% are better from the field I’m not

Kidding they all shot 50% or better from the field and the Pacers had no chance so there’s two reasons why I would I would start with this one is the Jazz are not a an awesome defensive team no one thinks of them that way including me

But they do fit the bill of the types of teams that have given the Pacers fits all year in that they have a lot of size right they’re a very difficult match up they start John Collins at the five in their new iteration of actually being

Pretty good Larry Markin at the four and Simone fono at the three then Off the Bench Walker Kessler you know one of the Rookie of the Year faves last year Kelly alen and know TR baji’s pretty big right so they’ve got size all over the court

And so the Pacers already down a bunch of guys they started uh nard heeld maen Smith Turner so they have Smith and Turner in there that’s good but then someone tiny would have to guard Simone fonio who’s a great shooter he hit two threes in this game and that’s possible

But he’s a little more mobile so where do you want to put Jaylen Smith if you put Jaylen Smith on Markin and that could go fine maybe but then fento is going to screen some poor guard to death and it’s going to be tough so what the

Pacers tried to do is put Andrew neard on Larry marinin that lasted about five minutes it didn’t work I actually get it he’s got the best active hands on the Pacers he’s an impactful Defender just try it see if you disrupt him if fento is shut down then all of a sudden you’ve

Got something right it’s Colin seon and done that’s it uh they that did not work they switched n hard off of Lara Markin and guess what that also didn’t work no one could stop him he had 32 points on 15 shots he was Unreal but even beyond that alignment right the Pacers couldn’t

Guard them because as soon as it became not Jaylen Smith and Miles turn the floor and it was just one Center and sometimes Jaylen Smith was lone Center because again a back injury for Isaiah Jackson limited him to less than eight minutes uh and Smith and Turner both had

Five fouls none of the Pacers three centers who play the most reached 20 minutes in this game so they were scrounging for minutes uh Oscar sheway played 12 minutes in this game definitely season high for him they were so outsized all the time someone on the Jazz could get an

Advantage and that’s why Kelly lenck had six rebounds and four assists and was impactful on Walker kler had five blocks although I think three of them were on sheway and five rebounds and didn’t miss a shot and Collins was doing well in the glass and was plus 13 and Markin and had

32 and 10 and fio had eight points four rebounds and was two of three from Deep their size was killer right and that was always and has been something that big teams the Lakers the magic the Raptors before their trades those bigger teams are just so tough for the Pacers and

Some of that’s a roster thing and some of that’s a style thing but especially in this game when they couldn’t have their counters of like well our guards are really good they did not have a chance right it was built in with all those other things that they were going

To struggle that is a flaw with the Pacers uh but the the thing is if the Pacers were going to win let’s say even given all the the available players they had what would have taken well they would have had to use their advantages elsewhere to exceed that Advantage the

Jazz had in siide so it would have taken their guards being really good right maen having a nice game heeld having a nice game TJ McConnell playing well Andrew nard playing well right and when the Pacers were in it and when they had that first quarter where it was like oh

Maybe they could do this right they’re down three they maybe they can sneak up in this yeah it was 20 to 23 about five minutes to to go in the first quarter right close game and it was a fivepoint game not long after that and it was a

Five-point game with a minute to go in the quarter right they were in it they looked like they were in it well what happened in the first quarter that didn’t happen in the rest of the game guard play was awesome for the Pacers or at least better Especial on AET but he

Healed with bananas in the first quarter he had 14 points in the game 12 of them were in the first quarter he hit three threes in that stretch he looked really good also in the first quarter Andrew nard three assists uh TJ McConnell two assists right like they were getting

Good play from their CS they were getting into the paint they looked really well connected and then they ran out of gas and their guard play Advantage slowly dwindled they did just enough in the second quarter to kind of stick with it but as soon as that went

Away and it was the Jazz size versus nothing pushing the Jazz back the Pacers fell apart so from a game Flow perspective I think they mean they beat the Jazz already this season but this is a way different Jazz team they they’re over 500 now for Pat’s sake and I

Predicted the Jazz would be good for those of you who remembered my preseason prediction so I’m happy to see them doing well either way if the Pacers get outplayed that badly by Colin sexon and Chris Dunn and Jordan Clarkson seon had 30 Jordan Clarkson had 17 Chris Dunn was

A plus 21 his defense was great he had six assists and four points and kante George was going crazy in garbage time and had 19 points if their guards get outplayed by those guys you just lose right you just lose given the size disadvantage and so what the Pacers

Needed to have happened to win didn’t even get close to happening was not consistent enough from their guard play they could not keep up with the Jazz size and all that culminates to AAS and the Pacers defense was just awful I mean that this goes to every position group

This isn’t just a bigs versus bigs or guards versus guards thing the Jazz the only reason this game wasn’t a 40 or 50 point game is because the Pacers got 18 offensive rebounds but the Jazz were making whatever they wanted they shot 44% from Deep they shot way even better

Than that on twos because they could get whatever they wanted at The Rim they got 35 free throw attempts up to 31 fouls for the Pacers that is not a misspeak I mean their defense was just awful a lot went wrong for the Pacers in this game

If you look at the Jazz shot chart it’s comical how easy it was for them to get to the rim if you can score 132 points in the current state of the NBA uh without having to just drill a bajillion threes they only took 25 that says a lot

About what you can do and what you were doing and what your opponent the Pacers in this case was doing which was very little defensively we have a lot more to talk about from this game including the brightest spot jerus Walker despite a three for 11 night a very positive

Listen check out lockon Jaz David lock hosts the Rival show for Pacers opponent tonight crushes it obviously uh the namesake of this podcast network uh you will get a lot of thoughts and insight on on the Utah Jazz from David over at locked on jazz jazz crushed the Pacers

By 27 tonight let’s talk about the positive is most positive at least thing that happened in this game for the Pacers and that is jarus walker uh who let me tell you all the stats jerus Walker set a career high in I will lead off with the most important one minutes

Minutes played in the game 26 minutes for jarus Walker a team High passing Benedict maen by playing the entire fourth quarter he was fantastic FC in that period I wanted him to score one more time just so he could have a nice round number of 10 points but whatever

Uh he also had a career high in points tied it with eight uh he did not shoot efficiently but he did make two of his five threes uh jarus Walker had a tied his career high in points set his career high in minutes he tied his rebounding

Career high with four he set not tied set his assists career high with four his passing was awesome that was also a team high in assists he had four steals which you’ll never guess was a career high that was also a Pacers high for this game he had two blocks which was

You’ll never guess a career high and a Pacers high for this game yes every box score stat on nba.com rebounds assists steals blocks points and I guess minutes jerus Walker had a career high in this game he did a lot of impactful stuff the list stopped at making shots three for

11 ugly two for five on threes if you want to do some quick match that means he was one for six on twos those weren’t pretty he’ll be the first want to admit it everything else statistically was solid so the defense look the numbers look great right two blocks four steals that looks

Impactful that looks like the defensive playmaker that I talk about all the time and it was his instincts are still good right he jumps at Kelly Alin Kelly Lin slow he knows how to recover but he’s still way too jumpy and handsy in a way that isn’t necessarily always meaningful

But you can see him getting better at that stuff and you saw him make a a lot of other impactful plays the passing is his definitely his best NBA skill at least to me I said that a month ago I tweeted it a month ago I actually

Probably said it two months ago after his g-league debut you can see how much he’s working on his shot two for five from deep in this game and all the other stuff that he does well if he can put together the efficiency on offense without being so jumpy on defense which

Is way easier said than done hey kick all of your habits from your whole life and oh by the way make shots in the NBA that’s not like a thing you can just snap your fingers and tell a rookie to do but you can tell where he’s growing

And how much better he’s already getting that was definitely jerus Walker’s best NBA game I don’t really think it’s hard to to find a counter I mean the other game he played well at and the last time we talked about him significantly was that 24-minute outing he had almost

Exactly a month ago if you’re listening it was a month ago it was uh less than a month by one day to uh the Jazz game on December 16th when he played 24 minutes against Minnesota and did a lot of of good stuff and he was two for three that

Night and in fact he’s been over if you take out opening nights still jerus Walker was until tonight uh over 50% from the field that is now no longer the case and almost 40% from Deep right he was doing efficient stuff he was making plays entering this game he was at 44%

From the field and 36% from Deep so his three-point percentage is still going to look good his field goal percentage is uh not not anymore after going three for 11 in this game he’ll be 18 for 45 on the season either way you get the just

Of this what’s going on this is the stuff that you can if you watch the Mad an a lot you you can know this this is what he’s been clearly building towards a lot of this season his g-league stats look great he looks really comfortable in those games the thing is Caitlin and

I talked about this on on uh on her podcast kayen Cooper he actually might have been less one I don’t remember he doesn’t really play a role that he’ll be playing at his like Peak with the Pacers if that makes any sense right in the G League he’s handling the ball he’s

Initiating the pick and rolls self and he did that a few times actually tonight against Utah but he’s not doing a lot of ROM man stuff he’s not doing a lot of passing from the ROM man stuff he’s just developing a lot of his skills at once

And really just playing right playing in games in the G League he is currently shooting 50% from three on 42 attempts uh this is in the regular season this doesn’t count the show showcase cup in the Showcase cup he shot 47% from Deep so again improving there uh over 50%

From the field in the regular season just under that in the Showcase cut part of it and in the Showcase cup he was at 23 points five rebounds three assists per game in the regular season 24.4 4.6 3.8 respectively with over a block and a steel per game in the regular again

Season part of this so clearly you can see the impact there and the all you want to see if you’re the Pacers is does this guy look like he belongs in the NBA is he the best player on the court the answer every time is yes right yes jarus

Walker looks like the best player on the floor that’s wonderful news for the Pacers that as a Madden he looks great he had yet to have a game where he looked really good even against NBA players I think I think that Timberwolves game was the closest thing

We’ve seen he looked pretty solid that night he looked good good in this game uh the jazz beat rider for the athletic Tony Jones even tweeted during the game uh with compliment with compliments for Walker so the brightest spot to me in this game jarus walker that was exactly what he needed

To show to perhaps get on the floor because this could have been a totally different thing uh here’s what happened in the second quarter that I I was wrong to say I think so Jordan war was in the game and I and jarus had not played yet

And I tweeted I would not be doing this I would play jarus over Jordan wara now I wasn’t thinking perfectly because next to Jordan war on the court were two bigs Jaylen Smith and Miles Turner so war was at the three I don’t know if you can

Have jarus and those two bigs I don’t know if you can have jarus at the three at all right now either way War at the three is way better than jarus at the three and then jarus Walker came in like a minute later anyway so the reason war

Was in first is because it was small forward spot either way that was a mistake by me and War was fine enough I guess in this game he wasn’t making his threes but he did make his twos um but that was what I was gonna talk about

With jarus is If You’re Gonna Play Jordan wara over him that is doesn’t make sense to me but then they played him and he played well and so that was I think the biggest positive from this game they also were able to get Ben Shepard some minutes because of all the

Injuries um he had an off night he could not get the ball to go into the basket but not a ton of positives from this game right TJ McConnell has been positive for them of late didn’t have the greatest game Obi topen finally started to miss some shots uh you know

The starters all kind of shot it well but none of them felt really impactful I would say Miles Turner second quarter was a big positive that kept them in the game ma was playing pretty well until he got hurt uh we’ll see how what that ankle injury actually means but a healed

Was awesome in the first quarter and then that completely faded away so there’s like a lot of individual little moments of like yeah that guy was pretty good for that stretch or this guy for that stretch but nobody for the whole length of the game consistently made plays that were impressive except for

Jarus Walker who did it in the second third and fourth quarters I would say um some other guys like Kendall Brown had a career high with eight points he could had 10 if he made all his free throws Oscar she had four offensive rebounds although I think three of them got

Blocked in his face right away but either way jarus Walker was the standout not a ton of positives from this game that is two losses in a row for the Pacers granted against the hottest team in the NBA and the defending champs and in the altitude back toback and without

Tyrese halber but it’s still two losses in a row and after their stretch of nine wins in 10 games and their beautiful form since Christmas they will hope to recapture that in their next two games they’re in Sacramento Thursday so two days off for them I think that’s only

One of two times between Christmas and the uh the All-Star break that that happens so it’s very significant that they have this now especially because they’re banged up and they’ve back to back right after Kings on Thursday Blazers on Friday you know we’ll cover those games here here on the lockdown

Pacers podcast we also have to cover the second absence I think the Pacers are really feeling right now Aaron n Smith who’s missed two straight games with bilateral Shin soreness and I think you really felt it in this game also of course they felt it in the Nuggets game

We’ll talk more about that one tomorrow but we want to talk about Aaron nishith and his absence a little bit here to close out Today’s Show before we do that though we’re going to talk about the lovely people over at jce Medical we come to sports to

Back here on lock on Pacers thanks for making us your first listen today and every single day for your second listen check out locked on Pistons they won the Pistons won for the fourth time this season cah Hill can actually have fun talking about the four-time winners

Detroit Pistons that’s just it’s wild to say on January 15th the we hours I guess it’s January 16th for all of us that’s crazy I mean that and they only beat the Wizards it shouldn’t be that impressive Alec Brooks went crazy cah Hill with more if you’re interested in the Pistons

And their four and whatever higher number than four season here at lockon Pacers we’re GNA close talking about Aaron neith who didn’t even play why am I talking about Aaron E Smith well he’s missed two games in a row Pacers lost both of them by double

Digits did they did not lose to the Nuggets by double digits they almost lost to the Nuggets by double digits they were down double digits late and then closed it to not lose by double digits they were down by 10 with under minutes ago I feel fine saying that either

Way they’ve missed Aaron n Smith for those two games and they’ve lost both and the other times they missed Aon Smith this season prior to these two games they beat the Pistons that’s funny I didn’t even mean to do that segue by 23 and they lost to the Raptors a game

They probably felt like they should have won last year he missed more time last year uh they went 30 and 43 when n Smith played you can do the math going backwards there barely a winning record when he didn’t uh he is important to them and he’s much better this year

Obviously he’s an improved player on both ends of the floor but they’re one or three without him now this year this is a guy shooting 47% a wing who can defend a better driver a better passer everything eron Smith’s doing everything better right it’s not a secret he’s been

Very important to the Pacers this season there was this talk when the Pacers were on their losing streak right amongst a lot of people who have a voice on on Twitter either cover the team or a fan of the team about is he like been the

Third or fourth best player on the team I don’t really want to get into that but the fact that that’s even a discussion shows the value he has and that really popped up in these two games without him right I think it was obvious what they were missing especially tonight when

They also didn’t have Bruce brown but to see this game when they had no answers for even like Simone fio or some of these bench guys that you could have stuck him on stuck n Smith on and had some more success or even put him on a

Guard and maybe balance the game out on the perimeter a bit maybe he could have been on ston instead of just trying to have nard slow down everybody I mean that you you know how good he is already if you’ve been watching the Pacers this year but seeing these two absences

Really made me want to dive in a little bit beyond just the one and three part of this because not it it’s not just that he is a Defender now right last year he was starting it was H you know Halbert and nard n Smith at the four and

Buddy heeld they got some offense defense balance now they’re searching for all the defense they can get and he starts because he’s maybe their best perimeter Defender for my money it’s probably injured him hard but n Smith is is close it’s probably a tie to some people that’s totally fine uh and they

Didn’t have him in this game and they didn’t have him when four nuggets players scored 20 points a couple days ago right in one game right it’s just been really tough without him so again I wanted to dive into the numbers so with Aaron neith on the floor of the Season

Obviously he plays a lot with Tyrese halberton and they offensive rating is 122.4 without him it’s actually higher right and he plays a lot with halberton so that was interesting to me but their defensive swings so much that their net rating shift is still positive between

Those two things and you can even take Halbert out of the equation and you can say well how does that look well they lose that rating right with Halbert on it’s almost six without him it’s closer to five they lose almost a point of net rating so pairing him with halberton and

Without is still a positive to the team right they do uh have a pretty good offensive rating with n smithon and Halbert off although the defense is terrible either way you know just from the onoff numbers what kind of value he has to the team but I think the other

Thing that stands out and especially in this game with a lot of guys out is he is the guy especially now that he’s starting that can kind of allow everyone else to slot into a position that makes sense if that even makes sense like he

Is he’s kind of small for a three but he’s a three right he’s clearly a three that’s a very good position for him he can guard wings that’s fine that’s a successful thing you’re happy about that if you’re the Pacers no one else on the team you’d say is naturally their best

Position their top position is three Jaylen Smith very clearly a four more a five maen more two nard one two toppin a four who plays more five than three Jackson’s clearly a five Ben Shepard’s a two war is a four Walker’s a four right now like every maybe kennall brown maybe

Kennall Brown’s a natural three as twoa either way n Smith is the natural three so when he’s playing and he’s playing 25 to 30 minutes a game that means everyone else is playing their natural spot more often without him what you get is Buddy heel at the three or Ben Maan at the

Three or Ben Shepard in tonight’s case hit the three or Jordan war in tonight’s case hit the three and Bruce Brown is another one there and that’s okay but not great right like everybody is playing a position that they’re not necessarily the best at and especially

Against the Jazz who are huge that’s sow effects becomes really tough because they can’t stay in front of Lai marketing for example right they’re too short or they’re too slow to stay in front of whatever guard they’re guarding or they can’t stick with Kelly L linck

Right lots of stuff that goes wrong and that either leads to easy points for the opponent or Miles Turner and Jaylen Smith are on cleanup duty all night and end up with 10 combined fouls everybody’s position makes more sense when n Smith plays and then when he’s

Not in you have the bench group with healed Maan which again there neither of them are the most natural threes but when they’re both on the bench together it’s a little less important you’re not going against the best of the best lineups all the time so I think that

There’s two things that are obvious here one is he’s good right now that he’s drilling I mean he was already pretty good I think people who watch the Pacers a lot uh felt like that Pacers got a good deal when they got him on that contract extension but now that he’s

Just lighting it up from three this year and his even his twoo percentage is the second best that’s ever been in his career on a way higher volume right he’s a very efficient player 66% true shooting is crazy even at his role player usage his turnover ratees lower his block percentage his steel

Percentage career highs right a lot of stuff about Aaron E Smith is better this year I’m not surprising anybody with that so obviously when he’s out you feel like you miss something if you’re the Pacers you’re missing a wing who can shoot threes and play defense that alone

Is a big loss but I think the takeway I’m starting to have from these games is they not only miss Aaron n Smith he is the guy that gets everybody in else in the right spot just by default just by having him play having him in the lineup

And so that Snowball Effect hurts everyone it hurts guys even in their natural spot because they have to cover guys who are getting beat or making mistakes because they’re not necessarily in their natural spot or they’re having a more difficult match up because of it

And so one this makes me think huh maybe another three could have some value to the Pacers even if it’s not somebody who has to play necessarily a ton and two it really just stretches the value of having him and having him uh available we’ll see if he’s going to play as this

Road trip progresses we’ll see how the Pacers can adjust with if he can’t play and who they could put at the three that they if the Bruce Brown covers a little bit because he can guard Wings the best of probably anybody not named Andrew nard on the team uh but they didn’t have

Him obviously so that is my Aaron n Smith thesis we’ll see if it comes true or if the Pacers can find ways to mitigate it going forward or what they do about it from a trade perspective if anything in the next month speaking of Trades tomorrow we’ll do the last trade

Show until more stuff comes out about the basers room a Roundup looking at everything that’s been said by credible people around the league so far and then I will talk about the Hawks and Nuggets games for a little bit just to cover the bases then we’ll talk with someone who

Covers the Kings about the Kings on Thursday so many crossovers between heeld and Duarte and sabonis and halberton uh for Pacers Kings we’ll cover that game of course on lock down Pacers for Friday show and talk a little bit about the Blazers so lots of fun stuff coming here on lockon Pacers

Podcast thank you all a ton for listening today good to be back in Indiana hope you have a fantastic rest of your day and we will see you tomorrow

  1. Carlisle gave up in this game as soon as he put Nembhard ontheir 7fter & entered Sheppard into it the game—but no one will blame him for quitting way too soon & stubbornly refusing to play big—the simple solution or at least try or attempt Obi at the 3 instead of Buddy who Sexton just owned and should’ve been guarded by Nembhard—Carlisle & his coaching staff act half regarded during such games. Try something other than just emptying the bench with a quarter & half left in game & they have just a 20 pt lead. Of course Tony no journalistic constructive criticism of Carlisle & his staff.

  2. This isn't a foretelling of how we'll be playing in February and March. If we can get the Blazers game, I'll be happy.

  3. Typical Tony—injuries reason we lose instead of blaming poor coaching adjustments—Walker a much better plug in at 3 than Sheppard—but stubborn Carlisle knows best without trying.
