Hello and welcome to another episode of Locked on wolves today on the show let’s check in on the lineup data and especially Twan lineups and even more specifically Nas Reed’s two-man lineups I think this is fascinating to look at how Chris Finch has used Nas Reed and

What’s working best when it comes to Nas the lineups that Nas usually ends up playing with plus we’ll preview the Wolves match up with the Detroit Pistons who call the red hot Pistons they won the other night we’ll previe that matchup here on the show today welcome in you are locked on wolves

A half step back and look at some of the lineup data and I I really like Twan lineups I think it’s a pretty interesting window into what what Works what doesn’t work and you know like for instance uh Jordan mcgoffin and carony towns have always had really good

Two-man numbers together it’s one of the things I talked a lot about before last season on how that could be um something we see a lot of With The Wolves bench unit is like hey stagger at so M golin plays with Carlon towns this was before

The the DLo might conly trade of course and the beginning part of last year before they both got hurt that was happening right even though C got off to a little bit of a slow starts to the season cat and mofin were still really good together and then of course we

Haven’t really gotten the chance to see that in any you know longer stretch of minutes at any point in time but those sorts of things can give us uh a window into things that are working things that perhaps Chris Finch and the staff looks to do moving

Forward so I I want to start with some general like the best two- main lineups so far this season then I want to drill down a bit further and specifically related to nazri because I think there’s some interesting stuff there so overall so far this season according to nba.com

Stats the timber rol’s best and I chose a um a minute A Min a minute’s minimum of 90 which is admittedly a little bit arbitrary but the reason I did that is it at least allows us some of the Troy Brown minutes some of the Jordan mcgoffin minutes but they’re not the

Tiny tiny sample sizes of like Josh maette with carony towns right which are a couple minutes or whatever here and there so 90 minutes which typically is 15 to 20 games depending you know 10 to 20 games depending on the pairing and you know I’ll I’ll note here

If it’s a if it’s an especially small sample size but the best net rating two-man pairing to date for The Wolves is Rudy goar not a surprise but it’s with Troy Brown Jr that pairing has a 122.355 rating together it’s a 17.3 net rating the the team’s best Twan pairing

This season is Rudy goar and Troy Brown Jr the second best Twan pairing is Mike Conley and Alexander Walker also maybe not all that surprising of course Alexander Walker started what four or five games this year uh at the at the two next to Mike

Conley or I guess um well yeah in in the back court with Conley and Anthony Edwards uh well I guess he started when ant was gone too so he started games when ant missed time you know a couple of games he started when MC McDaniels has missed three or four games so far

This year so overall Alexander Walker started 12 games this season um and so he has played now one of those was in place to Mike connley the the game in Boston that that Mike missed um but that’s the t’s second best overall two-man pering and by the way that defensive rating is just

99.8 this season with those guys on the floor together um and then you go on down the line the third best net rating lineup is Troy Brown Jr and Anthony Edwards so Troy Brown Jr is in two of the Timberwolves best three to manans this season the fourth one is Conley and

Edwards so you can slice this a number of different ways but the the timberwol top well let’s do it this way the fifth by the way is Conley and Gober so among the timber wols five best TW man parings to this point the season Mike connley is

In three of them Rudy goar is in two of them Anthony Edwards is in two of them and Troy Brown Jr is in two of them pretty interesting stuff isn’t it now you go on down a little bit further and number eight is goar and towns number nine is towns and McDaniels

Number 10 is go Baron Reed together and these are all ratings of above 10 and none of them are especially small samples except for the ant Troy brown one which is under 100 minutes it’s 97 minutes that ant of Troy Brown have played together but goar and brown have

Played 222 minutes together which is not nothing that’s a fairly significant amount I mean for context goar and Reed have played 354 minutes together and they play together every single night for a stretch of time uh so and that’s only you know about 50 55 60% more than

The minutes that tbj and Gober played together so all that to say some good Troy Brown pairings in there some interesting stuff like not surprising that Conley and goar and ant are very present in the top five also notable Carl towns is not present in the

Top five now I don’t want to read too much into that because he’s all over the place from like six to 12 right so like especially we’re not quite halfway through the schedule there’s going to be some noise in there there’s gonna be some stuff that that’s going to get

Hashed out the rest of the season and there’s some of these parings where like if you flip it and look at the Wolves worst Twan rating so far this uh Twan pairing so far this season like you’re still going to see some of those guys

That were a bit higher up on the list like Nas Reed’s got some negative ones um which we’ll talk about here in a little bit Nicki Alexander Walker certainly has a couple negative ones like n and Kyle Anderson together not been good this year when they’ve been on

The floor together for 478 minutes which is a a pretty hefty minute aot allotment they’re a minus 3.9 Alexander Walker and McDaniels together a minus 5.4 and while the offensive rating isn’t good the defensive rating together for not and Jaden is 11.9 that’s not very good at all or at

Least not nearly as good as what you’d expect right another thing that’s interesting is the worst Twan pairing that’s played at least 90 minutes together is Kyle Anderson and Troy Brown Jr so tbj is in two of the Wolves top three and the number one two-man pairing but also the worst two-man

Pairing this is where two manans get a little bit noisy because that has a lot to do with the rest of the lineup and that’s something that you know can use nba.com for that but I like cleaning the glass A little bit easier to filter in

And out of who’s in lineups it’s just quicker um and also I like that it takes out garbage time data so um that’s pretty interesting and again it says a lot about the lineups that tbj is actually on the floor with um and uh so

You know take some of that stuff with a grain of salt now the numbers themselves don’t lie while they’re noisy they don’t lie it means that tbj has done a lot of good things he’s also been part of some lineups that weren’t it’s terribly well constructed or don’t mesh really well

Together uh and both of those things can certainly be true all right um what I want to do next is I want to look at the nas Twan lineups because I I think that those are are pretty interesting um so we’ll do that here next and then I want to get into

Certainly you know once we do that we talk about some of naz’s best and worst parents I do want to get into um looking at the Wolves Pistons matchup which we’ll see here on Wednesday night so we’ll do all of that here next today’s episode of Loy wolves is

We’ll be halfway through the timber roll schedule of course some teams uh like I think Denver’s already at the 41 game the Midway point the regular season schedule so we’re about to hit that this lineup dat is becoming more and more uh I don’t want to say complete I don’t say

Accurate either not like it wasn’t accurate before but we’re getting a a truer picture of what this lineup data really means and the nas stuff is pretty interesting so first and foremost and this is again looking at nba.com stats their Twan lineups according to them Nas has only three negative net rating

Lineups Kyle Anderson which is a slight negative a minus point6 and by the way cleaning the glass has them as a slight positive like right around a plus one because they filter out garbage time minutes so um and also like last second heaves and stuff like that so you know

The nas the nas Kyle Anderson one is really right around Net Nas and Troy Brown Jr who we talked we talked about Troy Brown quite a bit last segment and then Nas and Shake Milton who’s just had a rough season so far those are all slight negatives the the

Tbj one is minus two and the shake Milton peran is minus 2.7 in terms of positives well it’s everybody else his best lineups are Nas and I’m taking out Josh bonx they played four minutes together an and Nas have played 486 minutes together it’s his second most used lineup Nas is the

Second most used two-man lineup and it is a plus 12.5 he’s got two others that are plus uh well actually one other that’s plus double figures one is Luca which Luca Garza which doesn’t count it’s two minutes the other one is is Rudy Gober Nas and Rudy together a plus 10.7 so far

This season and his next best lineup is jayen the one after that is Carlon towns so two of his top three are Rudy and Cat and then you go on down the line and it basically goes starters and then reserves because you get you get Conley and then you get into mlin Alexander

Walker and then into the ones that we said were negatives so it maybe isn’t surprising when you look at it this way Nas’s best lineups are when he plays with the starters and his worst lineups are when he plays with reserves tells us a couple different things right obviously the starters are

The better players the wolf starting lineup has really really good the uh the bench has been a bit inconsistent to put it kindly like Shake Milton’s been bad and has been out of the rotation now for a couple weeks and Kyle Anderson just hasn’t been as good

And now he’s been much better lately but overall slow-mo just hasn’t been as good as he was last season so uh you know all that is notable um both cat and Nas together and Cat and Rudy together are very clearly winning propositions for the Wolves so like for

Instance Nas and cat together according to clean in the glass this season are a A plus 5.7 which is a which is 7 percentile among NBA offenses now the the lineup That Nas and cat have been been on the floor together with the most is actually a very slight

Positive and and that’s Anthony Edwards Nicki Alexander Walker Kyle Anderson Carlon towns and Nazar so Sans Mike connley it’s basically the starting lineup with Anderson uh well I guess no McDaniels either his second most s lineup where it’s Kat Oz is actually a slight negative and that’s one with

Shake Milton so with Shake Milton out of the rotation those minutes go away way we’re going to keep seeing that get positive I’m not blaming the whole thing on Shake but clearly Shake Milton was dragging down that lineup a little bit um Nas and Carlon towns together obviously makes a lot of sense

Offensively but uh and that’s and by the way that is you know these numbers kind of bear that out the the defense the defense is actually not too bad in fact the defense is a higher percentile than the offense is the offensive rating with those two together on the floor which

Surprised me a little bit you look at Nas and Rudy bear together and those lineups remember cat and Nas were 78th percentile plus 5.7 Nas and Rudy are 93rd percentile among NBA lineups according to cleaning the glass and a plus 10.3 somewhat surprisingly the offense has not been very good but the defense

Has been unbelievable with Rudy and Nas on the floor together which tells me a couple different things one Carl 3 Town’s facilitating with Rudy goar on the floor has been really important and and well Nas can make flashy passes and he is overall a good passer for a big man

Cat’s passing has actually been more substantive this year it’s actually been more impactful than what we’ve seen in recent seasons and you know cat’s assist rate is actually down pretty significantly from last year and it’s it’s his lowest assist rate in like five years six years but he’s picking his spots better

His turnover rates down a little bit from last year I think towns playmaking is that much more important this year because and is you know taking more shots in general because there’s this cat Broody um uh chemistry I guess you could say this this number has been talked about

Quite a bit but Conley is by far the number one assist man when it comes to Rudy scoring the second most uh the the the player who has the second most assists to Rudy is carony towns that chemistry no matter what you might have heard in the National media if you’ve

Been watching like you I mean we all saw this last year Kat Ry actually had pretty good chemistry on offense that’s Contin continue this year not so much for Nas and Rudy I think cat’s versatile and even more efficient offensive game than Nas Reed has been really really

Important for those lineups on the other end of the floor though Nas and Rudy together have been phenomenal their defensive rating as a two-man paing according to cleaning the glass is 100.7 that’s a 100th percentile defense for context the Timber’s team defensive rating which is best in the league we

Talked about this on yesterday’s show on Tuesday’s show by far the best in the League um 10 is is 10 18.7 right now and nearly three-fold points better than the next best defense so the nas Rudy Twan pairing is nearly nine points better than the Wolves team you know League

Best overall team defensive rating their defensive uh effective field goal percentage is 998th percentile their defensive uh points per possession or I’m sorry uh it’s actually 100th percentile I looked at the wrong on so 100th percentile in terms of points per possession 100 percentile in terms of effective field goal percentage

They’re also rebounding at an extremely high rate which is good to see because that’s been an issue for Nas in the past overall when those guys are on the floor together the Tim rolles have an 87th percentile uh rebounding group on the floor on the defensive end of the floor

And actually on the offensive end a 94th percentile offensive rebound rate um a as a pairing so the Nas and Rudy minutes together have been extremely fruitful and this kind of follows that pattern of usually Rudy goar hits the bench first depending on foul trouble we see Nas

Come in and pair with cat then we see cat leave and Rudy come back at the end of the first quarter and that’s mostly been a pretty good proposition for Chris Finch to close the first quarter and open the second quarter that way and then we’ve often seen a bit of fter in

Mid-second quarter which is occasionally when Rudy will take that second rest you see cat and Noz on the floor together now again that’s a plus almost a plus six like it’s been a good lineup for the Wolves cat and and Nas together it’s just been not quite as good as cat and

Rudy together so something to keep in mind and keep an eye on here moving forward um the last point on n is uh well actually a couple more quick ones Nas at the five by himself at the center position has not been good this year um and maybe that shouldn’t be

Surprising um you know I’d said in the past that I thought Nas was best deployed as a small ball five that hasn’t been the case this year now it’s relatively small sample size it’s um well I say not been good it’s actually been better than you might well

No hang on I I filtered that wrong with so n in the Floy is the center with no Carl th towns and no Rudy goar has not been a very good proposition for the Wolves this year it’s been a minus 16.1 which is of course a third percentile

Unit now the vast majority of those minutes have been with Kyle Anderson and we already talked about this but Nas and Kyle are are one of just three negative pairings or or close you know still close to neutral pairings that that Nas has this year so Nas at the five has not

Been overly successful now the Wolves don’t do that a ton you know injury uh uh you know foul trouble really small matchups are really the only and actually the Wolves lately have been punishing small matchups with an even bigger lineup that usually is going to

Be the best choice there uh but to this point it hasn’t been great the last point on NAS is that the Nas and Anthony Edwards lineups together are pretty unbelievable if you look at Nas and ant together really regardless of who else is on the floor Nas and ant

Together have been awesome this year according to cleaning the glass they’re a plus 13.4 which is a 98 percentile Twan pairing uh their their most hes lineup together actually hasn’t been all that successful it’s only a plus 2.4 which in the context of overall they’re a plus 13.4 that’s pretty significant

And that’s with Nas and Cat in the front Court together with slow-mo nil Alexander Walker and ant if you go down to um the starting lineup with nas in it instead of cat so Conley Edwards McDaniels goar plus Nas and no cat that lineup is a plus

31.6 in 74 possessions not a massive sample but a really good line or look at it this way this is the starting lineup with no Conley and Nas instead of go bear so Nas and Cat the front Court McDaniels ant and Nik alander Walker that’s a plus

60.3 going on down the line Nas and ant minutes together have been fantastic and I think a lot of that has to do with Nas’s ability to both roll and Pop um I think it pick and roll like I I I guess we could pull these numbers probably go

To bball index and find them but as a role man this year has been fairly effective of course prefers to pop and he pops more often than not as his cat whereas Rudy always Dives to the rim but Nas has been so effective as a

Pop man this year that in pick and pop with ant ant’s gotten some assist that way um The Wolves can run they run actions now to get Nas open threes they didn’t really used to do that he’s been so good from three this year and ant

Just uh the way that ant creates he just generates these open looks and teams are more willing to leave Nas than they have been to leave Carlton towns and for good reason right cat’s got this track record to being a phenomenal shooter well guess what I mean Nas has only continued to

Improve from downtown he’s over 40% this year still a shade below cat cat’s about 42% Nas is just barely over 40% but they’re both 40% three-point Shooters and if teams are are willing to double off of Nas ant’s gonna find him or maybe ant will find somebody else you get the

H the hockey assist or the yeah the hockey assist as you know uh he passes to the assist that then finds Nas two passes away Nas is benefiting from ant’s gravity as a as a player and and Nas isn’t the only player doing that but that’s a

Um that is a big reason why the Nas and ant pering are so good together all right let’s close today by looking at the Wolves Pistons matchup of course we have not seen Detroit yet this year catch up on what they’ve been up to here lately and uh what they’re actually

Off since Sunday Detroit played Monday on MLK day and they actually won they beat the Washington Wizards and old friend tus Jones by 12 of course just Detroit’s fourth win this season they are four and 36 they’re on Pace to win just eight games this year they’re

They’re you know this will actually be their Midway point so if the Wolves win they’ll be exactly on Pace to go eight and eight and 74 this year which is uh that’s something they tied the NBA record for most consecutive losses I think it was 26 um and they’ve also got

Injuries too kid Cunningham will likely not play in this game he’s been out for about a week and they thought he’d be out about 10 days I think he’s already been ruled out uh Boyen bonovich has not played in the last two I believe he was questionable though for the Wizards gam

So there’s a shot that he plays Wednesday but he’s missed the last two games you could argue he’s their best player overall of course they’ve traded Mar Marvin Begley thei third they traded him over the weekend in that deal with Washington um so not sure if he’ll be

Not obviously he won’t be available because they traded him not sure if blackd donovich will be available doesn’t look like Cunningham will be available so uh yeah I mean this is a game that the Wolves should absolutely win there’s no question about it and um you know there’s there’s really no other

Way to slice it but you got to be a little nervous that they just did win a game so they’re not they’re probably feeling pretty good coming off on Monday they made this trade you know maybe there’s some excitement around that within their locker room I don’t know um overall

Though uh the FanDuel line for this one man there isn’t a FanDuel line yet I thought there was one there’s not a line over at FanDuel yet as of me recording the show but I would imagine that the wolves are going to be what uh 16p Point favorites 15p Point

Favorites which feels really rich but like I I don’t I don’t know it’s we’ll call it 14 and a half I’m going to guess that the line’s 14 and a half assuming the wolves have everybody available on Wednesday night now it is the front end of a back-to-back for Minnesota and they

Go home to play Thursday although that’s a banged up Memphis team Sans Desmond Baines stands John marant banged up J Jackson Jr who I believe is questionable for Thursday’s game we’ll talk about that a little bit on Thursday but um all that to say like the Wolves should be

Easy double- digit favorites in this game things that Detroit you know things to look out for against Detroit is uh well first of all they’re the only team that has a worse turnover rate on offense than Minnesota Minnesota’s 29th and turnover rate Detroit is 30th they

Turn it over 14% of the time they have the ball on offense which is insane and also not that much worse than Minnesota um they don’t shoot threes and they don’t make threes when they do shoot them they’re dead last in three-point rate and they’re 28th in percentage bogdanovich is over

40% and he you know probably doesn’t play on Wednesday Alec Burks had a really big game in their win against the Wizards he scored 20 plus on Monday he’s a shade under 40% so really it’s Al Burks and then it’s Isaiah Stewart those are the only guys you really have to

Look out for um in terms of three-point shoot on this team everybody else that shoots them is basically you know like jayen Ivy is shooting four game he’s 30% isaah livers is shooting uh three and a half per game and he’s shooting 29% um sorry I said livers

Livers see the word Li IV RS of course you’re gonna say livers right livers is livers uh is um is is under 30% like this is not a good shooting team and they also don’t try to shoot that many threes so the Wolves can pack the paint

Against them that’s the recipe for suc success they get to line of fair amount they’re kind of middle of the pack in terms of drawing fouls a lot of that though is Kate Cunningham and he’s unlikely to play in this game besides him it’s jadeen Ivy trying to get to the

Rim he can do some damage that way on the flip side though uh well oh sorry one other thing on the offensive end they’re a top 10 offensive rebounding team now they miss a lot of shots but they’re also top 10 in percentage in rate it’s not simply like raw you know their

Seventh in overall offensive rebounds per game well they also don’t shoot the ball well so there’s a lot more available but in terms of percentage they’re also like they offensive rebound fairly well a huge part of that is Jaylen Duren who’s been really good this year um you

Know uh user Thompson has rebounded the ball really well for them as well on the offensive glass Jade ivy for a guard does a really good job doing exactly that so um the wolves do need to pack the paint defensively they also need to rebound the basketball and not give this

Pistons team that is such a poor shooting team and a a a bad offensive team they’re fourth worst in the league in terms of offensive rating don’t give them Second Chances don’t give them life pack the paint make them shoot jumpers rebound the basketball the guards have

To get in and rebound ant has to get in and rebound uh Conley needs to do his part Alexander Walker these guys have to um have to grab boards to to kind of shut things down on the opposite end of the floor the Pistons F like crazy they’re dead last in defensive free

Throw rate they third worst in terms of forcing opponent turnovers so the Wolves turn it over a ton Detroit doesn’t Force very many turnovers something kind of has to give here we have seen the Wolves start to Trend a little bit better in terms of not turning the ball as much
