Which young Grizzlies should be part of the Memphis core?
On this Thursday edition of lock on Grizzlies in the wake of the Pascal SE yakum trade to the Indiana Pacers if the Grizzlies could get involved in future dealings who would you move on from David Rodney or zire Williams I have my answer plus this idea of Santi Alama
Potentially being a core piece moving forward is that still as true as it once was and we’re going to preview Grizzlies Timberwolves tonight on National Television Once Again lock in with me on this Thursday episode of lock on Grizzlies you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast

Appreciate it before we get into the Timberwolves one of the very best teams in the NBA that the Grizzlies are heading off to Minnesota to take on a road trip that the Grizzlies begin tonight a long run to end the month of January in a variety of different cities
It is a tough stretch Memphis has been playing better against the Golden State Warriors most recently uh the Grizzlies looked pretty good so how that all translates we’ll talk more about but after talking about the potential of Pascal seak getting traded to the Indi basers of course on Wednesday it
Actually happens right sakam for a reasonable amount I thought that was a decent trade for both the Raptors and the Pacers uh several first round picks Bruce Brown Jordan no going to the Raptors and in exchange Pascal sakam goes to the Pacers and that’s a trade that’s interesting it definitely makes
The PAC better offensively helps a little bit defensively but doesn’t solve those wos I think it makes Indiana a more interesting playoff team than it does make them a contender and if it’s the first step in a process of getting them to that place I think Indiana has
An interesting path that they can follow there obviously rarel as their head coach Tyrese halberton playing at an all NBA level adding another all NBA caliber play player in SE yakum isn’t going to hurt matters but it got me thinking right if the Grizzlies over the next
Several weeks we talked about what type of trade we wanted to see the Grizzlies make on our last episode who all would potentially be involved right because Marcus Smart out for a sustained period of time with an injury plus I think you could argue and maybe we do this on a future episode
That Marcus Smart is a part of the core moving forward I think he’s shown enough in terms of being a versatile type of player combo guard that he should be here next year when the team’s trying to be a title Contender once again hopefully all the injuries are gone and
No more suspensions and all that fun stuff but Luke Canard seems kind of like low hanging fruit he’s also not a young player right Luke has uh a team option coming up that could be good salary cap fodder in a trade the Grizzlies would be wise to keep one of the best NBA
Three-point Shooters in the league in house if they’re able to but the second tax apron is coming up and Memphis while I do believe believe Grizzly’s owner Robert perah is willing to be a luxury taxpayer I struggle seeing him going past the second tax apron which has larger punitive punishment for spending
That much money on your salary cap for those you that are not capologist so what does all this mean it means that while Luke Canard pretty easily can be moved and again I’ll save those conversations for de Michel with you and I chatting on this Thursday I wanted to
Prioritize young players players that may be a team like Detroit or Washington or San Antonio Portland teams that are actively not trying to be that good this year maybe they would see value in them as part of another deal being a third team in a trade whatever the case might
Be and I landed on two names in particular that I wanted to talk about and hopefully I can get your input in on the comments or in the comments uh to this video podcast however you’re checking us out zier Williams and David Rody right now now that sounds like an
Interesting combination because they’re two fairly different players right different in terms of what they bring to the table but similar in terms of being unique as weird as that might say and let me explain or as weird as that might sound let me explain zire Williams at
Six foot N is a true perimeter player right you don’t look at zire Williams and say that guy can be a stretch for that guy can defend bigs he doesn’t have the frame for that and frankly he doesn’t have the skill set for it he is
A true perimeter wing with a larger size that has a decent handle that has shown the ability to put stretches of good play together but not nearly consistently enough right just against Golden State he was one of the two starters that only scored I think zier only scored Four Points as a starter
Against the Warriors that was after a few good games compare that to David Rody who is smaller than zier at least shorter Rody is maybe six foot six maybe a little shorter than that but Rody while he can play on the perimeter looks to be the
Part of a more of a front Court type of player a three a traditional four that stretch four idea Rody has played that a lot recently and then even in college at Colorado State David Rody played the five now can David Rody play the five in the NBA probably not but the fact
Remains it’s two different types of Versatility so they’re similar in terms of being versatile players one on the perimeter given his size one in the front Court given his a athleticism and Agility and his thickness his uh his ability to use his body in the case of
Rody if one of those two guys had to be the ones to be shipped out who would you choose for me I’m shipping out zier Williams and let me explain why because you’re probably listening to this or watching this and thinking zier has the higher upside which might be true I do
Think he has Lottery Talent still he’s only 22 years old can still potentially grow and that’s one of the reasons I would be comfortable with moving him you have Vince Williams Jr in the fold now you have GG Jackson you’ve got guys on the wing that can contribute in that way
And you want to add another Wing potentially in a zier williamses type of deal with Toronto Raptors maybe for example or any other team that is not in the hunt for postseason contendership right serious postseason contendership so you take zier you put him in a place like Detroit Toronto Charlotte
Even a coach a front office they can talk themselves into that steady level of potential the production may not be steady but the potential remains steady at 22 years old you see his frame his ability to play on the perimeter Rody is not as attractive he doesn’t have that
Lottery pedigree he doesn’t have that sheer physical size as a true perimeter player but to me what Rody is is he’s more functional for what the Grizzlies need he’s more versatile he can play on the perimeter but he can also be a front Court player he could do a variety of
Different things defend a variety of different positions and as the Grizzlies start thinking about this roster long term you have to consider that level of Versatility David Rody can play positions two through five depending on the matchup On Any Given night zy Williams cannot do that David
Rody can impact games in ways that don’t involve scoring while zire has improved as a passer while he’s improved as a rebounder this season you don’t see that consistently enough on the defensive end although he did draw the Steph Curry defensive assignment at times when Vince Williams Jr didn’t have it we’ve seen
Zier do those things in the past Rody for me is more functional and zier while the potential is there that means he probably has greater trade value and to me the ceiling for zier is not one that he’s likely to obtain here in Memphis and that’s an important piece of this
We’ve talked about in the past to Michael and I how zier as a h midcourt or mid-range shooter is not maximized with the Grizzlies what he is best at is not prioritized so take the high road in terms of value move move on from zier keep Rody it’ll probably be a more
Realistic long-term contract anyway and lean on that versatility and production that you’ve seen more consistently than you’ve seen it from zire so I’m taking the safe bet rather than the perhaps higher quality potential ceiling player how do you feel are you with me would you keep Rody and try to trade zier
Would you be on the opposite end of that want to trade Rody and keep zier whatever the case might be however you view it you know we’re not talking about Jake laravia because laravia is injured and to me he’s not in the same tier as Rody and Williams Vince Williams Jr
Isn’t in that same tier anymore and I would argue that GG Jackson given his contract situation his age he’s not in that tier either for me it’s zier and it’s Rody those are the two guys if you had to pick who are you picking to keep
In terms of end of rotation guy who are you trying to maximize trade value on I’m trying to move on from zier keep Rody what say you let me know in the comments hit me up tell me how you feel on X Joe Mullen X let’s continue this
Conversation won’t we I think it’s a good way to have fun on this Thursday another good way to have fun is to talk about Santi Al dama and his role in all of this because a 6 foot1 offensively versatile player in theory could have trade value does he make sense in
Memphis longterm does he make sense in a similar way to zier as a potential trade add-on at the trade deadline even the summer we’re going to talk about that next here on locked on Grizzlies but first this episode of Locked on Grizzlies is brought to you by the good

Pacers it has me all Juiced Up For What the Grizzlies could potentially do moving forward in the next several weeks leading up to the trade deadline I would move on from zier Williams and keep a David Rody if you want to keep zier and move on from David Rody you’re not going
To get an argument from me I just gave you my preference but to me that’s kind of an Easy Choice One way or the other right there’s one or the other easy direction to move on from especially now that you have GG Jackson and Vince Williams Jr presumably in the core
Fold it gets a little bit tougher in the true front Court where you have jiren Jackson Jr right now right Xavier Tillman is about to be a free agent Stephen Adams coming off of a serious knee injury Brandon Clark should be healthy in the next six weeks or so but
He is coming off of a serious Achilles injury in the front Court you’ve got a guy in Santi Alama who has been consistent in terms of his growth offensively he is a versatile offensive 611 big a guy that in the past people have argued can this
Guy play on the perimeter or not I don’t think he’s a wing I don’t think he can do those things maybe you do but I’ve seen enough of Santi Alama especially defensively it doesn’t give me confidence that he can be a perimeter defender on a night in Night Out basis
Maybe offensively he has the game to do that but he doesn’t have it defensively so for me he’s a four and he can play the five depending on the matchup but we don’t talk about Santi Alama as a tradable piece very often and my question going into this trade
Deadline is why it’s not like Santi is Untouchable it’s not like he is a player that should not be on the table if a team offers a deal that makes a heck of a lot of sense to the Grizzlies both now and in the long term helps them avoid luxury tax concerns
Helps them bring in an upgraded Wing player an upgraded backup big like I talked about yesterday taking a Rody or a Williams A Kar maybe although I agree with the Michael that that contract’s a little bit harder to move on from a lvia even tagging a first round pick and
Getting an upgrade like a Quinton Grimes you take Santi Al dama tag a first round pick to him could you get an upgrade as a front Court player I think you could especially from a team that has wings that are combo forward types that perhaps they don’t
See the long-term value in that Memphis could as a team that’s in this weird skip year where they plan on being a contender again next season with a healthy John Morant and presumably Stephen Adams and Brandon Clark If Santi Alama comes along and provides you that opportunity you have
To listen now is Alama more off the table than Rody and Williams I would argue yes because again we talked about versatility earlier right and while Alama May lack defensive versatility in terms of what he’s capable of doing as a wing perimeter Defender compared to Williams and Rody what Alama does better
Than both of those guys is score the basketball in ways that the Grizzlies want the basketball to be scored dama has shown that he is a more consistent at least in terms of taking the three and he’s good enough at it currently 34% from Beyond The Arc so not Elite by any
Stretch but you have to respect him as a potential shooter he has shown the ability to convert that shot right he’s also shown the ability at 6 foot1 to create on the perimeter in a similar way to jiren Jackson Jr and to be honest with you watching those guys play I’m
Not saying that Santi is as good as jiren because obviously he’s not but it hearkens back back in my mind to the reality of Xavier Tillman senior playing more when Stephen Adams got hurt or Derrick Rose being viewed as a point guard priority to replace John Morant during his suspension in free
Agency the Grizzlies like to find guys with comparable skill sets so they can continue their system the way that they operate on both ends of the floor Santi doesn’t perfectly mirror what jiren does but he can create off dribble he has shown growth as a creator of offense for
Others his assist percentage is at a career high compared to his first two years in the league Santi has that capacity and I think that kind of like zier as we mentioned earlier the size the lottery Talent teams are going to see what Santi Alama is able to do on
The offensive end in particular at 6 foot 11 and perhaps want to take a swing so what does Z William Santi Alama and a first round pick get you maybe that’s a topic for another episode of lock on Grizzlies but I just want to remind everyone of the way that this should
Look for the Memphis Grizzlies moving forward there are three guys on this roster that in my opinion are Untouchable that’s johnar Desmond Bane jiren Jackson Jr you want to add Vince Williams Jr to that I don’t think he’s Untouchable but he just signed a long-term extension that is Cap friendly
Team friendly clearly the team values him Vince Williams Jr has earned that contract and then some more than likely he’s fourth on that list if a team wants anybody else to hear them out might take more like marus smart might take more Santi Al dama certainly would take more
For me than aier Williams or David Rody or the tier below that Jake laravia John Kar those types guys but I think that we have to open up our perspective to this idea of Santi potentially being someone that could be moved on from for these Grizzlies because there’s value in Santi just like
There’s value in zier and maybe you argue that Santi has more value because he’s shown the ability to produce at the NBA level more consistently to zire there’s still potential being bet on when it comes to zier Williams so Santi might be in that mix too and don’t let
That be something that breaks a trade for you because again outside of Bane Morant and Jackson Jr everything should be on the table going into the rest of the season that’s not as relevant as what the team has to do going into tonight in their game with the Minnesota

Welcome back to lockdown Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen a once again solo no to Michael Cole on this episode he will be back on the Friday edition of lockon Grizzlies rehashing the upcoming Timber Wolves game which uh we’re about to talk about here on this episode and maybe
He’ll have some takes on my Williams versus Rody ranking San Alama not being Untouchable or being willing to move on from him if the price is right and in future episodes because again it’s a long season maybe demichel and I can talk about what that price might look
Like in the lead up to the trade deadline I also know demichel is very eager to talk about GG Jackson what he is capable of Rafael Baro I believe is going to be a guest on the show here soon to talk about GG very few drafts
Experts are as well versed on what GG Jackson brings to the table as Barlo is so lots of good stuff coming in the next couple of days here on lockdown Grizzlies as he close out the week and start a new one uh but before we get to
All that we have to talk about Grizzlies Timberwolves and this has been a tough matchup for Memphis so far this season right the Grizzlies lost both games so far to Minnesota 119 to 97 in November and then 127 to 103 in December Minnesota didn’t see jawar either of
Those games and of course the Timberwolves won’t see jaw in either of these next two contest the biggest takeaway for me from their most recent encounter which was in Memphis uh the Grizzlies struggled mightily especially in the third quarter it was a close game at H at halftime Memphis was only down
Five but then the timber WS really pulled away late and it was the play of a guy like Mike Conley and it stinks right as an old hat grizzly fan at this point someone who’s followed the team since 2011 it hurts to watch former Memphis grizzley Mike Conley one of the best to
Ever do it in the beel street blue cook the Grizzlies but it’s also nice to see one of the genuinely best NBA people that I’ve ever had a chance to interact with on a limited basis but when I cover the team directly when I lived there in
Memphis I talked to Mike a time or two and he’s just so kind and you hear so many wonderful things about him and the way that he represents himself it’s like the the most positive kind of demise you can ever meet when it comes to a basketball loss right and he
Was a major reason why Memphis lost that game Mike Conley 19 points seven assists four rebounds he was two for three from Beyond The Arc and Mike is having one of his best three-point shooting Seasons the Grizzlies have to be aware of where Conley is and what he’s doing
Offensively they can’t just shut things down and leave him open and hope that they can stop a Carl Anthony towns uh Anthony Edwards if he plays in the game I believe he questionable as of this recording um whatever the case might be in terms of what these guys are
Physically capable of doing you have to be able to put yourself in a position to protect yourself against a guy like Mike Conley getting hot because if Mike Conley is able to go out there and compete at a level that you’re not able to contain his offense you’re surely not
Going to be able to do that with other members of the team and that matters a lot to me you have to be able to find a way to slow down the likes of an Anthony Edwards and Anthony Edwards is not questionable I just check that in he’s
Good to go Anthony Edwards gets the Superstar next Great American basketball player that John marant used to be Edwards gets that attention now and he deserves your attention offens L he deserves your attention in terms of his physical ability not disputing that but you can’t forget Mike Conley and you
Can’t just Punt and say oh we’re leaving that guy open because Conley’s going to hurt you he has the capacity to do so so does Carl Anthony towns Rudy goar is having a Renaissance season bouncing back double double machine a likely Defensive Player of the Year candidate
Again right so the Minnesota timber was one of the best teams in the NBA for a reason their roster is coming along quite nicely they have veterans like Nas Reed who is having a terrific season Off the Bench he’d be a great fit in Memphis long term but I don’t think Minnesota’s
Gonna want part with him old friend Kyle Anderson doing some good things continuing to be a strong basketball player the one thing he’s not great at is putting the ball in the hoop but he is a strong rebounder strong Defender we know what Kyle Anderson is capable of so
The Timberwolves have a great mix of Youth and Veteran leadership they have a player in Conley who can guide them nicely they have explos of talent and Anthony Edwards they have so much going for them when towns and goar in particular given their size and the unique diversity of their talents get
Going how can Memphis win they have to slow Anthony Edwards one-on-one and this is where Vince Williams Jr has to be significant it may not be the best offensive game for him right and I think this is a game where jiren Jackson Jr can potentially be aggressive and bounce
Back after a poor performance against Golden State Warriors jiren the last time he took on Minnesota and again goar in towns played Seven of 14 from the field 21 points only two rebounds which is not very good but offensively jiren was able to get his shot and be efficient scoring the basketball he’s
Gonna have to do that for the Grizzlies to win because unlike the last time the Grizzlies played Minnesota Desmond Bane is out right so jiren is going to be the focal point Vince Williams Jr has to limit Anthony Edwards and they can’t overh help that’s part of their scheme
To an extent I get it but if you allow simple dribble penetration and Mike Conley can pick and prod his way through the defense they’re going to be open Shooters there’s gonna be open slashers and Cutters the Timberwolves are going to be able to get whatever they want
Because they are simply at closer to full strength than the Memphis Grizzles can ever hope to be as the season goes on so the Minnesota Timberwolves are not the Golden State Warriors The Warriors are flawed I think you could pretty easily the Warriors are pretty broken
Now I could see the Warriors making some sort of a trade in the coming days to try to fix what ails them after they’re lost to Memphis and then on the grander scope of things not much broken in Minnesota with the Timberwolves if you see another strong
Mike Conley performance it’s going to be extremely difficult for the Grizzlies to overcome that if you see Anthony Edwards going off even though Vince Williams Jr is his primary Defender Memphis probably can’t overcome that and given their current Personnel Xavier Tillman and jiren Jackson Jr and Santi Alama and
David Rody are not going to be able to shove Carl Anthony towns and Rudy goar and Nas Reed out of the paint they have to lean into transition scoring team rebounding being consistent with their movement and moving the ball not just for good shots but for great shots if
They’re disciplined in that way on both ends of the floor they can find a way to beat this Minnesota team but it’s going to take a team effort it can’t all be jar it can’t all be hoping that Mike Conley misses threes this Minnesota Timberwolves team is too good you’re
Going to have to bring defensive execution with you even if your offensive wo woses potentially continue for you and GG Jackson has scored extremely well this might be a game where he cools off a bit because of the defensive prowess of the Timber roles I
Would love to be wrong and I would love to listen to the Friday edition of lockdown Grizzlies and here to Michael Cole talk about how wrong I was but this is a game that Minnesota should win this is a game that the Grizzlies are going to have issues with and they’re going to
Have to play at their very best to keep it close they haven’t been able to do so yet this season let’s see if they can pull it off the third third time around against Minnesota thank you guys so much for checking out this episode of Locked on Grizzlies friendly reminder to

It’s no secret that the Memphis Grizzlies have a lot of young players. And it also isn’t a surprise that the team is running out of time to build the contending version of this roster alongside Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. before money gets tight in the salary cap. Who is the best trade chip? Who fits the long-term roster best? Host Joe Mullinax discusses that, plus previews Grizzlies-Timberwolves, on this episode of Locked on Grizzlies!

Ziaire – he just needs to stop hesitating… and he will be good. Waiting for tat day to come❤
I agree about letting Ziare go,but it is really tough for a GM to admit he whiffed on a pick that
He traded up to get.
If I had my way Ziaire and laravia ,and konchar would be gone gg Jackson would be signed and I’d keep the draft picks.
This is a tough one but I wanna keep Z. I get what you are saying re Roddy low trade value. I see Z being a trade we regret.
Space should be made for GG, Vince, & Smart to play the wing possession.
I agree with your assessment of Zaire Williams versus David Roddy . I don’t even think it’s even a question, we keep Roddy and move on from Zaire. We definitely get way move value out of Roddy. Zaire’s injuries have definitely slowed down his development. In my opinion, once Dillon Brooks was traded I looked at Zaire to be ready to fill that role but he’s not ready to be a starter and considering we picked Zaire with a first round pick he should have been ready. I think Zaire will be better off with another team.
One thing I notice about you Jo, is you like short teams. Short teams don't win NBA championss. Example Denver Nugets. I'm not commenting necessarily on moving Zaire. Fact is the team is not big enough to compete for championship. Say GG develops into a 3 + D wing, who is the starter? please don't tell me you're waiting on Jake LaRavia because I would have never drafted him in the first place.
You need 5 big men in the modern NBA, 3 of which can switch between 4 and 5.
Next year with Aldama, the Grizzlies will have four, they need one more. And they need to sove who is starting at 3 because if kennard gets traded, Williams Jr will take his place. Roddy would be the 'move' player who fits in several positions
The minute he said NAz Reid I said “can we get him” 😂
Why we can’t do a package deal Santi , Zaire , roddy. To get one legit 3 or 4 like a Ingram.
Vince, Ziaire, GG. Ziaire and Roddy have the same exact numbers basically! Ziaire is taller, more athletic and a better defender. He has a higher ceiling
Roddy is 6'4 on a great day
Trade both Roddy and Ziarie if you can find GM's dumb enough to trade for them; hell no Santi isn't untouchable; tonight's starters at Minnesota should be Pippen Jr., Luke, Vince, Jaren, and Xavier. Tell Pippen to go right at Conley old ass to get him in foul trouble. Luke has to get 3's up and Jaren can't suck like he did against the Warriors. Hopefully GG can cook Kyle's slow ass off the bench and maybe Gilyard and Santi can score off the bench as well.
Santi is off the table & is untouchable. I think you stupid to think other wise.
Gilyard, Roddy Vince and GG. Z and Laravia can go
Trade boffum!!!
Ziaire would have been gone if I was GM dude is ass
Don't trade anyone! These guys will get plenty of experience this season which will make them all better. Trade lottery pick for big or draft one.
Damn joe where’s ur faith in Vince
Roddy is fools gold, I’d move on from him asap. Ziaire functions better with Ja, adds much needed height. I simply don’t see a long term future for Roddy and LaRavia
Anybody not named GG or Vince Williams should be traded from the young core bench
Joe, I think you are right. Zaire gets more return in a trade for his potential over Roddy, but that could also be a reason to keep him and let Roddy go. I want to keep Vince, GG and Smart to go with Ja, Jaren, Bane moving forward, but everyone else could go for the right price. My biggest concern long term is at the Center position. I love Adams, but he has not shown up for us in the postseason whether it's injury or matchups. The sooner the Grizzlies find their long term center solution the better. Go Grizz!
Konchar , Zaire Williams, and LaRavia …can go at this point
vince, ziare, and gg I think. ziare has shown to be able to be able to close out games previously as well as provide a much needed scoring punch late in the 4th. I think keeping him and letting GG develop as well will be good for us. Vince could work as a back up 2 guard or have him in line ups along marcus smart and jjj so we can maximize his defensive impact. GG has shown he has defensive instinct that should be further developed with this opportunity he'll have compared to david roddy
Roddy is so much better than Ziaire. I can’t count how many times on one hand that he has stepped out of bounds.
Did everyone here forget the 11-0 run Roddy single-handedly had against Dallas. That is a player you want to keep. Ziaire could never do that against anyone.
I would trade Smart now. A lot of teams could use him for a playoff push this year, and long term Ja and Bane are the starting guards. Use his value to get a good young center. Maybe Jalen Duren could be had. Detroit badly needs a veteran guard and still has hopes for wiseman at 5. Both Zaire and Roddy can go as well. Aldama and GG are better and BC is coming back. That value can go towards getting a backup guard. Maybe Tyus comes back, or Russel Westbrook.
