Victor Wembanyama or Chet Holmgren for Rookie of the Year? | Inside the NBA

Victor Wembanyama or Chet Holmgren for Rookie of the Year? | Inside the NBA

Ask Kenny and sha a question uh you can as a matter of fact Rick of the year I would I would have to say you know Chad is playing great but I would have to still say wanyama because when he when wanyama is the first option

Going by record or going by stats but I think I think for me by record or going by stats I’m going by both so I move I think that chadre because of his Rec the record and the team he’s on he’s having impactful amendments but in terms of

Individual talent I still put women Yama slightly ahead it’s a single award we have this conversation every every MVP voting Shay GES out the J better be in the MVP talks but good call has to go has to go to Victor okay let to go to Victor you know

Team-wise of course you know uh chess playing on a great team Spurs are not great but individual is a slight Edge to statistic and can we ask you this here here’s a thing I’ll ask you since you ask us a question question if you put wiama on OKC are they better of

Course I like Chad I’m asking you that we didn’t say you in like who you didn’t like I think he he I think they’d be better cuz he’s playing with better players okay it is so then that’s to me that’s that that separated it OKC again as I said I mean you’re

Talking about we we just watched two of the top teams in the Western Conference record wise m in Oklahoma City and Minnesota yes who do you like better out of those two well I like Minnesota better than OKC because of Anthony because what you saw tonight was OKC’s got

SGA but uh I I think that that’s a good question but I caught him Ernie no like good stut I I like it’s a good you have to think about it I probably would go with Minnesota uh if if they played each other because man I tell you what Shay

And Anthony they are the future that’s a great question Ernie but like I say I’m still I’m still in all on Denver and the Clippers I would go Minnesota only because the both teams lack experience together in the playoffs but at least you have Conley and Gober who has

Experience in the playoffs and I just think the Minnesota anytime it comes on to a tiebreaker kind of like that it’s that the Minnesota defense man they they’re solid they’re when they play against a team like Jaren Jackson didn’t have no fear them them Defenders you like everybody

Say got great defense jiren Jackson didn’t care if he hadn’t got in foul trouble he’d have had 40 he was ducking on them dudes like he was at the YMCA like he had uh uh I I you know those guys are big they’re great shot blockers

But if you able to move like okay excuse me like uh Memphis did tonight and shoot threes you they’re going to struggle well the first time in my 13 12 years here all you guys are wrong okay see has a has a better because they they play a

Certain way system they use a system Minnesota is heavily heavily dependent upon Anthony Edward so you saw we had a poor first half what if in the post he has a great first half and a poor second half OKC everybody touches the ball they move the ball they play a certain way

And even though SGA is in the MVP conversation they’re not heavily relying on him so I’m going have to go with a KC because of the system

Shaq, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley debate NBA Rookie of the Year between Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama and Thunder’s Chet Holmgren, and choose whether the Timberwolves or OKC are more serious contenders in the West.

  1. Itā€™s tough to give any awards to a guy on a 7-33 team but Wemby will probably win ROY. Iā€™d actually vote for Chet because I value wins above statsā€¦

  2. I like all the answers but victor is showing what the future is and to be honest supers is not using him like they should just keep feed him the ball

  3. It just seems unfair for a player, whoā€™s already had a year of professional NBA training/prep, to be allowed to compete for ROY. I didnā€™t like it when Blake or Ben won it and I donā€™t think Chet should be allowed in the category. That full season of ā€œsittingā€ is simply more time for that player to learn and train in ways a true rookie wouldnā€™t have just entering in he league.

  4. I don't get what is so difficult about admitting Wemby is a better player period LOL. Put them side by side and there is no debate. Chet is good but Wemby is on another level. and he is only 20!!!! Ask OKC if they want a straight up trade for Wemby. They will choose Wemby every single time. Anyone disagrees with that is delusional.

  5. let's put it like this if Wemby was on that OKC roster instead of chet OKC would win the chip

  6. We could debate Chet in the first couple weeks of the season – But Wemby is really pulling away with this one and it's not that close.

  7. I don't think Wembanyama on OKC would be better. I think they would win as many games but he would be statistically worse (save for like shot percentage) because he wouldn't have to do as much. As talented as he is, Wembanyama isn't moving the needle for San Antonio the way LeBron did for the Cavs or Luka did for Dallas. This isn't a shot against him, I think that will change in the future, but right now I'd see him fitting into OKCs system, not being a game changer for it.

Statistically, Chet and Wembanyama are practically the same guy. Chet is more efficient and has fewer turnovers while Wembanyama wins on rebounds (+3), blocks (+0.6), and points (+2). Chet is at least a slightly above average 3 point shooter at 38.5% while Wembanyama is as bad as Westbrook was when we were screaming at him to stop shooting 3's.

It's really close between these two overall. I don't see where all the excessive Wembanyama love is coming from outside of him just being 3 inches taller than Chet and being the flavor of the season. Don't get me wrong, I really like the kid too and as a 20+ year Spurs fan I want nothing more than for this kid to be the next Duncan. He's good. I just don't think he's better than Chet right now.

  8. ROY races like these are ways tough. Chet, is playing great (team) but there is something to be said when youā€™re a TRUE rookie. Wemby is the No. 1 option despite his trash teammates

  9. Chet is the third option on okc, if Wemby played on okc he would be the first option. Heā€™s miles ahead of Chet

  10. While I also lean towards Wemby rn, I think that it is very close, and that the analysis is flawed: Wembys stats would probably go down if he was in OKC, because SGA is their clear first option offensively. Conversely, Holmgren would have higher Stats if playing in a tanking team like SAS. Thus, one could argue that while Wemby is playing for his own stats, Holmgren is contributing to actual wins.

  11. Canā€™t use records when judging ROY. The top picks go into the worst teams, and it takes a while for that team to gel. LeBron was ROY, but his team didnā€™t make the playoffs.

  12. wemby is the true rookie, he deserves it. injury or not , Chet was playing and or practicing against NBA level players last year.

  13. Chet has that dawg in him… haven't seen enough from Wemby yet in that eye test rating. Hard to say because they are on two totally different teams as far as skill goes.

  14. For me right now is chet, not counting that bes a borderline second year player. They have similar numbers I think but having them in one of the best teams of the league as a rookie is something that doesnt usually happen. And I cant say that wemby would be doing the same in okc even though its possible

  15. This isnā€™t a question. Chet should get this but the nba was trying to push wenby before he started. They want him to be the face and the first 5 games wemby didnā€™t do much and team is losing and Chetā€™s team is winning and itā€™s bc of him. This is getting ridiculous and Iā€™m not a fan of either.
