Strong fourth quarter propels the Minnesota Timberwolves to fourth consecutive victory

Hello and welcome into another episode of lockdown wolves this is the postgame podcast for the Tim Wolves win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night we’ll break down the whole thing a slow start for Minnesota a lot of Nas early a lot of ant in Minnesota Mike late talk

About kind of what led to the sluggish start what this thing looked like Midway through when it wasn’t looking so hot and then also what a finish from the Wolves though to end up winning this game by 15 points despite trailing coming into the fourth quarter we’ll

Break it all down on the show Welcome in you are locked on wolves you are locked on Timberwolves your daily Minnesota Timberwolves podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day hello and welcome to the lockdown wolves podcast part of the lockdown podcast Network your team at every day my name is Ben Beacon I’m the host of locked on wolves today’s episode is brought to you by prize picks the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports go to prize.com

Lockon NBA and use the code all lowercase lockon NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 happy Friday everybody happy weekend and happy 4 game winning streak the tbls one Thursday night winning both ends of a back-to-back for the first time this year as they ended up beating the

Memphis Grizzlies the short-handed Memphis Grizzlies by 15 it wasn’t pretty uh the end of the game was was pretty I think we could say that but we’ll go kind of blowby blow here I’ll give some key takeaways My overall thoughts from this one a big thank you though here

First off the top for making lockdown wolves your first listen every day of course this show is free and available everywhere that includes YouTube as well as all of your favorite audio platforms you can also watch the show on the lockdown Sports Minesota app on both

Roku and Amazon Fire TV and you can follow an X lockon wolves and also at B Beacon with 2bs 2 e cken of course uh your episode before this is the postcast from last night um I actually hosted the postcast which is not typical I’ve hosted I don’t know six

Or so this year um so I hosted the postcast at Tyler Mecha from K suus on usually that streams live following the games on lockdown Sports Minnesota on YouTube had a bit of a hiccup Thursday night so we actually streamed it live on our YouTube channel lock on wolves

YouTube and then the audio is always here the feed so check that out if you miss it to get Tyler’s perspective I’ll expand a little bit on some of our conversation from that show here on this show today uh and then after like for instance uh wolves Thunder Saturday

Night that’ll be Jack Borman the editor-in chief of Kan suus joining Luke Inman of lock done Sports Minnesota that’ll be live on that on that YouTube channel but again the audio right here if you’re listening wherever you listen to podcasts you’ll be able to find that postcast audio here this weekend as

Well all right um so this game of course Memphis has no John Brant of course they still have no Desmond Bane obviously no stevenh Adams all year for them uh Jen Jackson Jr had missed uh had been questionable for a couple of days he played though and The Grizzlies also had

Santi Al dama which was um notable for this game as well he he had good moments early also Luke Canard who didn’t play I don’t believe he played in the last matchup between these teams so all those guys played a role in this game um this was sloppy early like the Wolves got

Down quick they were down 2412 very early uh nased comes into the game and is just a a a whirling dervish of offense as he so often is a complete jolt gets the crowd involved hits a couple of Threes hits his first three-point attempt as he always does I

Think he made his first four shots from the field uh hit a tough layup in the paint um and the Wolves end up tying this thing at 30 at the end of the first quarter but the second quarter is completely sloppy Midway point of the second quarter the Wolves already have

10 turnovers on the night and they finished with uh I believe 18 uh four I guess they only finished with 14 but they had 10 of them in the first like 14 minutes 15 minutes of the entire game and then only four the rest of the way

Over the final you know 25 30 minutes of the game 30 minutes of the game so they really front loaded their turnovers in this one which obviously ended up working out but like can we just can we just not I mean like a couple of them were the silly they

Always are right like so many of them are always are are usually of the silly variety like it’s very rarely um like just a bevy of forced passes into you know there’s a couple here and there but like the the pass out of bounds and the dribble off your foot and like just

Silly things like that and then for the final two and a half quarters to only turn it over twice after turn it over 10 times in the first quarter and a half not even is uh I don’t know it’s it’s it’s mindboggling really but anyway Midway through the second quarter the Wolves

Offense is still very sloppy jiren Jackson Jr was an absolute superstar in the first half of this game he h 21 points by halftime time at halftime Nas Reed was the only Timber rols player that had double figures he had 13 points at halftime ant had two points Kat I

Think had um three or four points uh nobody else was was in double figures it was just Nas and the Wolves ended up being down by five at halime they were down 550 uh yeah 55 to 50 by the way I I should I should say

This like to kind of kind of sort of set the stage in a way even with the guys that we missing Memphis is still a top 10 defensive team in the league they are not a top 10 offensive team especially without John marant and Desmond Bane and

Add in like I mean derck Rose is missing too right they are 29th this season in offensive rating I mean John BR played in 15 games too like he played in 15 of their you know 40ish games or I’m sorry he played in nine of their e that was

Off by a little nine of their their 40-ish games uh and you know they’ve only gotten 17 games from Luke Canard they’ve gotten zero games from Stephen Adams sure um but oh and I should also mentioned they didn’t have uh of course uh Marcus

Smart has been out now for a week or so so like they’re really bruised and battered and short-handed it’s still a top 10 defense it’s a bottom two or three offense in the entire league so you know scoring 50 points in a half that fine you shouldn’t be giving

It 55 and the defense was bad throughout I mean Rudy had a couple nice moments in the first half he had the big block on Santi Alama that that uh you know said something to him uh Alama didn’t care for it there was you know a little bit

Of a a back and forth uh and Alama was kind of shook the rest of the game from that that point forward but for the most part the perer defense was was reminiscent of what we saw for chunks of the Detroit game on Wednesday night wasn’t very good the interior defense

Was spotty at best cat struggled neither cat or Rudy could stay in front of jiren Jackson I mean Jackson was hitting threes which which was kind of you know a little bit unexpected uh you know not not entirely unexpected but the Wolves obviously would rather him like he

Shoots more than five a game but he’s only 33% from deep and in this game Jan zson Jr end up going three of six but he hit one early hit a couple in the second half and when the Wolves were you know giving him a bit of a cushion

But carony towns Rudy goar it didn’t matter if if Jackson had the ball in the perimeter and chose to put it on the floor like they could not stay in front of him especially in the first half um as things moved to the second half they caught a break Jen Jackson Jr

Picked up his fourth foul early like within the first two-ish minutes of the third quarter the Wolves were down five at the time just like they were at halftime they finished the third quarter still down five they did not take advantage of the of the minutes with no

Jaren Jackson Jr on the floor he did pick up a fifth foul in the four in the fourth quarter and we’re talking about this on the postcast Tyler Becka and I it was it’s like a weird mix between McDaniels and towns the way that jiren Jackson’s officiated where you know he

He does foul a lot but then like some of them are pretty Ticky tack because I think the officials are expecting fouls from him they expect the physicality and he gets called for the foul you know whatever so good for was a good thing that the Wolves got him into foul trouble uh

Because he was killing them he just was and and and again Tyler and I talked about this a bit further on the postcast as well there’s a handful of guys that are kind of you know skilled bigs essentially somewhat ironically because that’s like what Carl the towns is right

Those kinds of guys give the Wolves trouble now obviously J Jackson and like Zion aren’t the same guy and Julius Randle and Joel andb none of those guys are the same player but they’re all that type of player with a big body that can score in multiple ways that can draw

Fouls uh and for the most part those guys are good defensively you know take out Randall and I guess at times Zion um I jiren Jackson squeezed the trigger 23 times in 27 minutes he scored 36 points in this game on 23 shots Ultra efficient

15 to 23 from the field got to the line five times he only had three rebounds and again committed those five fouls so so the Wolves did a a good job getting him into foul trouble and I thought in general the defense improved in the second half like

Third quarter I thought the inter interior defense was much better Rudy uh started to have that s that effect that we’re used to seeing him have on opposing teams where it was like you know they like flying too close to the Sun as soon as they start to get close

To the paint it’s like oh Rudy’s in there and they Veer off we weren’t seeing that in the first half and that was partly due to during I mean like it was as much as I hate to admit it like I mean Charles Barkley talked about this

Half time like teams that spread the Wolves Out in theory could have success driving to the basket and and that’s a whole other topic and I’ve talked about this before and I think the jazz jazz losing to the Clippers in the playoffs a couple years ago like that’s not the

Same situation because the Wolves W like the Wolves first of all I don’t want to go too far down that path the short version is of course the wolves have far superior perimeter Defenders to those Jazz teams with Rudy and Conley and Donovan Mitchell and those guys um but

Also like not very many teams have big Bigs like true Bigs like Jan Jackson Jr that can hurt you from every level and apparently now also are adding you know the ability to facilitate offense put the ball on the floor and drive like Carl towns there aren’t that

Many teams that have those types of players that can truly spread the Wolves Out defensively and credit Taylor Jenkins there were a couple sets even late where they drew Rudy out of the paint and were able to to kind of tuck in behind him and score um for the most part though

Teams aren’t able to do that and won’t be able to do it consistently um but the Jazz excuse me the Grizzlies did a little bit of that in this game um and but then as the game were on like I was saying like third quarter into the

Fourth quarter that wasn’t an issue and then by the fourth quarter this was typical lockdown perimeter defense for Minnesota and Memphis ends up scoring just 17 points in the fourth quarter we’ll talk about the overall stats later but like shooting you 46% for the field is fine but the Wolves ended up shooting

55% from the field the Wolves did a good job uh overall forcing turnover is not allowing them to get to the line too often like it ended up okay because that fourth quarter was so suffocating but there were moments in the first three quarters that were brutal defensively

For Minnesota it’s just once again they locked in when they really needed to late all right a couple key takeaways then we’ll get to individual studs and Duds we’ll do all that here next today’s episode of lockdown wolves is brought To Us by our friends at eBay Motors our partner at eBay Motors

Is here for you 247 covering the top sports stories of the day with the local Experts of lockon plus our national shows covering every league go to locked on sports today on YouTube and subscribe to the first ever National Sports 247 streaming Channel all right key takeaways from this game so

Uh I talked about the defense a little bit already I thought first half it was just laad desal is probably the best word it wasn’t as atrocious as it was Wednesday night in Detroit but it was uh La aasal probably the right word other than a couple possessions like the one

That uh that uh that Kenny highlighted at half time of of on the TNT broadcast of there were a couple of them actually Niki Alexander Walker Kyle Anderson working in tandem to disrupt memphis’s offense all the way out near the timeline and get easy buckets the other

Way like there was a little bit of that from the bench not as much from the starters again like even offensively no starters and double figures at halftime second half the defensive intensity ratcheted up first in the paint with Rudy as as the fourth quarter showed up

Or fourth quarter came around then the Wolves actual defense that we’ve seen all season finally showed up we saw a lot more of that in the fourth quarter which was which was awesome to see um it drove the Grizzlies field goal percentage down below 46% they did shoot 41% from three

And credit like early in the game especially I mean jiren Jackson Jr Luke Canard Canard was an absolute flamethrower but I don’t think he scored after the Midway point of the third quarter maybe late third quarter uh the Wolves did a good job kind of I mean

He’s at this point like he’s pretty much a spot up shooter a little bit of a one-trick pony that good did a good job of not allowing the ball to swing to him in the corner for open jumpers late in the game we talked about that a little

Bit on the postcast with Tyler as well so it was really just you know the allaround defense improved as the game were on and then at you know uh all I I said two on the post guys third quarter the Grizzlies just started making some tougher shots like first

Half it was as much the Wolves defense not coming to the party third quarter Memphis was just good they scored 31 points they worked for them the Wolves contested shots better the interior defense was better um fourth quarter it was it was uh you know Memphis wasn’t

Making those shots and the Wolves were contesting shots so like progressively got better and I I alluded to this early in the early in the show like there were plenty of factors for the wolves like second head of a backtack travel um let’s also not forget I I I mentioned

This in passing Memphis is a top 10 defense Memphis like I know obviously Marcus Smart being out hurts that um you know Desmond Bane being out hurts that a little bit but like this is still a well- coached team like Taylor Jenkins is a really good coach this team played well

This isn’t like uh you know the Spurs throwing uh um Jeremy soan out there and making him run point forward like Jackson Jor is not Jeremy soan like I’m this is the the Grizzlies are not the Spurs like I know that they’ve got a losing record this team won 51 games

Last year even without John Brant and Desmond Bane like there were rotation guys from last year’s you know even besides jaran Jackson Jr like you still got rotation guys um you know I mean Canard being one of them uh santiel dama was a rotation guy last year started 20

Games for them um I mean John Kar like they had guys who played that were rotation guys in a 51 win team last season so like this win ultimately being by 15 points is a good win sure you’d like your team to show up earlier than the fourth quarter or late

Third quarter whatever uh but a win is a win is a win and and um like I don’t know I like I I I I was impressed overall with the way things came together because it also wasn’t just like they squeaked it out at the end kind of like the Detroit game felt

Like that a little bit even though it was maybe not as close as the final margin of seven or whatever ever it was this game maybe was a little closer than the final margin of 15 but it was still pretty decisive in the fourth quarter

This was a hey we’re going to put our foot down we’re gonna make a statement we’re gonna end this game now and I thought that they did a really good job doing that um I want to talk about some individual players uh I guess one more more broad note related to the

Rotation uh short minutes for kyli Anderson he only played 15 minutes in this game um Jor mlin saw again first half rotation minutes but not second half rot a minutes which is notable that’s the same thing that happened in in Detroit Carlon towns only played 29

Minutes in this game and he was not in foul trouble he he was it was a weird cat game because at moments like he had a couple very nice passes late uh in the game he had one off of a a a sideline out of bound play or a baseline out of

Bounds play actually where he it was almost a touch pass where he caught it swung it immediately to ant popped under the basket for an easy lay in uh late in the game as the Wolves were kind of trying to assult the game away like 14 and seven on 12 shots is a

Pedestrian towns game for especially for game he’s not in foul trouble uh I thought he was fine though like I he had a lot of shots go in and out he had a couple layups go in and out he had at least two threes go in and out he ended

Up two of five outside the arc which is of course fine so like I didn’t think it was a bad cat game it was just a quiet cat game and he struggled defensively on jiren Jackson Jr but again A lot of people do jiren Jackson Jr’s really really

Good all right uh let’s put a bow in this one by talking individual studs and Duds I want a quick peek ahead at the Wolves Thunder game uh Saturday night as well we’ll do all that here next today’s episode of lock out wolves is brought To Us by our title sponsors

Daily fantasy sports Made Easy all right let’s close with individual studs and Duds here today um like obviously studs Anthony Edwards I haven’t really talked much about his game yet we spent a bit of an extended time talking about him on the postcast Tyler and I so go check that

Out but uh 28 points on 11 of 19 shooting again he had two points on I think uh one of five at halftime which if that’s right I’m pretty sure it is he went 10 of 14 after halftime ended up just one of six from outside the arc he

Missed the three very late in the game had a kind of a heave at the end of the first half but he also the one he made was like an impossible crossover step back and you know the left slot like in front of the Wolves bench it was just a nutso shot

That he made shouldn’t have taken it but he did and he made it he also had five boards five assists uh the three turnovers in 34 minutes like that’s fine uh you know given the five assists and given the efficiency shooting the ball and one of those was like a classic

Early in the game classic ant dribble off his foot for no reason uh he does it it seems like once a game um overall you know a played really well in this game and of course most of it was second half almost all of it was second half but uh like that’s what

Matters right I mean as long as he puts together I I don’t want to be one of those people that’s like ah he does it when it matters towards the end because obviously like all 48 minutes actually do matter equally um this game was the

The rest of the Wolves were able to keep this game close like you know most first half that was mostly Nas Rudy defensively and then it was like okay it it was time for ant to kind of to figure it out like Conley had the lob uh that

Uh the alley the play call that was a lob to ant for for the dunk an had his own self alup off the backboard when he pump faked got stuck I was Tillman he got in the air and then threw it off the backboard to himself

And dunked it which no doubt you’ve seen on X or wherever a million times already which was a fantastic play he had a mid-range jumper right after that uh he had an and one mixed in there actually I think the and one might have been his

First shot where he had been in pick and roll uh had a lob to Rudy had a pass to uh somebody else for a bucket and then it was like the Grizzlies started to kind of play the pass a little bit and then at that moment ant flipped a switch

And it was and one layup uh you know alyo dunk mid-range jumper get to the get into the pain again like just a clinic all of a sudden out of nowhere from Ant and it ends up being a really really strong game for him uh another stud Rudy

Goar uh plus 20 in 39 minutes in this game um only the Wolves only had I guess Nas was a plus 16 Off the Bench uh but anyway Rudy had 17 points and five of 10 shooting he went seven for 10 at the free throw line I think he made his

First maybe six free throws there seven of 10 at the line 10 boards four assists six blocks in this game which tied a season high for him and uh three turnovers too which were three second calls in the first quarter of this game offensive three second calls um so again

17 to 10 six blocks four assists for Rudy I would say one of his better games here recently and and even though he got you know postered a couple of times by jiren Jackson like I mean there’s no shame in that there’s no shame in jiren Jackson scoring 36 points because uh

Rudy also had some really impressive defensive plays in by the way he wasn’t exclusively guarding jiren Jackson Jr in this game either um he basically took Alama out of the game after that block I mean Alama had 13 points but it took him 14 shots to do it he was scared after

That early block from Rudy he was just kind of scared the rest of the game of going in the paint goar was fantastic really really good he got that I don’t know how he didn’t get credit for a steel I guess because maybe he didn’t fully have possession when he was foued

By Canard but he poked the ball away mid fourth quarter uh Canard just grabbed his arm at midcourt to try and keep him from from getting out of a fast break so just tons of defensive Brilliance and and strong offensive play for Rudy in this game as

Well uh I guess I’m going for studs I don’t I don’t know I do this sometimes and just it doesn’t matter Nas uh yeah Nas gets a stud 20 points Off the Bench eight of 13 four of five on threes besides that’s just being a really good

Line like if he doesn’t pour in those points at the end of the first quarter doesn’t get to 13 points in the first half like it may be dramatic but I mean does this team win this game I’d like to think they still would and I think they

Probably would but like without n if Nas has like a hoam first half they’re probably down double figures at halftime almost certainly would be down double figures at halftime uh the crowd’s probably just completely sitting on their hands at halftime but Nas was huge

Early in this game he had 13 of his 20 in the first half he had I think six or uh I think it was eight in the final couple minutes of the first quarter um again four or five outside the arc like just a really strong performance added a

Couple of steals um three boards one assist one block zero turnovers in 24 minutes a strong NS game my fourth stud is Mike connley he was awesome 17 and 10 four rebounds two steals zero turnovers big goose egg 10 assists zero turnovers seven of 11 from

The field three of six on threes a rare Conley game where he shot almost as many two-point attempts as three-point attempts he shot like roughly I don’t know between two-thirds and three like around 70% of his shot attempts this year have come from outside the arc and

He shot five twos in this game making four of them um fantastic Conley performance knocked down a couple of Threes late to to put this game away for the wolves um no real Duds a weirdly quiet Kyle Anderson game The Wolves had seven guys that played 24

Or more minutes Kyle Anderson was the one rotation guy who played in both halves that only played 15 minutes mlin played seven minutes but all that was in the first half um except for a one minute of garbage time at the very very end so uh you know a weirdly quiet

Slow-mo game but he still three assists in those 50 minutes three boards um just uh you know just I guess notable Jade McDaniels scored a bunch early he had the wolf’s first two baskets in this game and then only finished with 11 points but I thought he was good uh lock down

Defensively late uh you know a fine Jaden McDaniels game albe it a bit quiet you’d like him to have more than three boards in 36 minutes but um a good game from him overall all right uh that’s all I have for this one the wolves have the Thunder

Up next on Saturday and of course that is a a I would call it a showdown of Epic Proportions um I I don’t know like I don’t know what the vent diagram of NBA and NFL fans is it’s at the same time as uh Packers 49ers Saturday night

So I mean hopefully the sports world is paying attention to this one because it is a good game feels a little bit like when wolves Celtics was on a Wednesday and it was just on league pass and not a national game like I don’t know can somebody pick up wolves Thunder here in

A couple of weeks nationally they play I think a week from Monday I mean this is a this is a true like at this point a heavyweight match up two young exciting teams uh playing in Minnesota like Tyler and I talked a little about this at the

End of the postcast I think this is I think the Wolves win this game um but it’s obviously gonna be close I the Thunder won fairly easily in OKC a few weeks ago Minnesota won a close one in Minnesota a few weeks before that uh back I guess was like right after right

Before Thanksgiving um this is a it’s going to be fun this is going to be a fun game um so wolves Thunder Saturday night 7M tip we will have the postcast uh and oh real quick I do like the matchup for Minnesota I actually think they match up well with the

Thunder mostly because of their big size Advantage as long as they can perimeter defend and guys like lud Dort don’t just like go nuts from outside the ark um which are you know a couple pretty big caveats but if the perimeter defense is decent early I think the wvs will be

Just fine in this game I think they can overwhelm OKC with just simply the size that they have and also ant doing ant things as long as like remember last year in the in the playin n Alexander Walker did a great job and Sh G just Alexander when Jade McDaniels didn’t

Even play remember he was hurt so um I’d like to think the wolves have enough length it’s really like he is the one you got to worry about remember Josh gidy got a little bit hot from three against the wolves like something like that if that happens they’re going to be

Really tough to beat but I got to believe that can’t happen every single night right um so I like the match up for Minnesota it should be a whale of a game on Saturday we’ll be back here at lock Den wolves on Monday of course and uh the upcoming schedule after Saturday

Uh let’s see the TS after they play Saturday I don’t think they play again until Monday yeah Monday back home for Charlotte so OKC Saturday we’ll talk a bit about that on Monday I’ll kind of split the show kind of a half postgame pod half preview of the hits game on

Monday and then back out on the road for four consecutive on the road uh Washington Brooklyn San Antonio and then OKC a week from Monday so uh a couple OKC games sandwich run four very winnable Games The Wolves will be easily favored in um so an interesting stretch

Here upcoming from Minnesota all right uh tune in on Saturday night at the lockon sports Minnesota YouTube channel for the live postcast with Jack Borman and Luke Inman of course have the audio here on this uh on the locked wolves audio feed and then we’ll be back with

The Minnesota Timberwolves needed all four quarters to put away Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night at Target Center. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) evaluates another sluggish start and another impressive finish for the Wolves. Naz Reid was the only player in double-figures at halftime for the Wolves, but Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley turned it on late and the Timberwolves’ defense showed up down the stretch as the Wolves won their fourth straight game.
