NBA Gametime reacts to Nuggets beat Celtics 102-100 to snap 27-game home win streak

And it wound up going to free throws on the other end for Aaron Gordon heit one of two there was a double violation if I’m if I’m assessing what happened correctly and a jump ball at half court Boston got a Jason Tatum called timeout that’s where we stand with 13 seconds to

Go 10200 joic 3412 and n as I mentioned Jamal Murray has 35 um I don’t remember the last time I saw a double lane violation but that that was the call there’s some wild stuff that’s been happening in that game huh absolutely and you watch this game

Man it’s going down to the wire the Denver Nuggets trying to give Boston at first loss at home remember Boston 20-0 on their home floor and off to a 32-9 start it is their best start Midway through the season since the 2010 2011 season final ticks playing out in Boston

Right now there’s a foul away from the ball with 4.9 to go and that’s where things stand actually not a foul a timeout called on the play Boston’s out of timeouts now with 4.9 I’m not going to give you playby play let’s take you to Miami in

The mean for the Champs on the road tonight after losing in Philadelphia they come up big with a 102 100 victory in Boston The Joker 3412 and N Jamal Murray with 35 I don’t necessarily believe in statement wins that Denver already has a trophy they’ve got rings

Really need to prove anything but this was this was a big one I think when you look back I don’t know how it works for players but as a coach 82 games is a lot to remember some stuff what you remember is games like this this is when you

Going into a playoff prep you anchor points like this you go on road trips remember that road trip we were down three guys and we went three out of four those kinds of things that you anchor into going into a playoff this this what they’ll draw from it’s not a trophy game

Like you say but it’s a feather in their hat and and good for them it’s a Confidence Game to go into Boston where they’ve been undefeated and then not only that but you see the shooting percentage of Tatum m brown to lock them down and make them play as poorly

Offensively in that building as you did that’s a feather in your cap to Gordon and kcp those guys defending if Denver can play that type of defense and bring it home then they’re going to be hard to be because again they got the best two-man game in all the NBA in Murray

And Joker Boston uh held to under 43% shooting in this game while Denver shot nearly 52% from the field Celtics turned it over just three times which is remarkable so uh Denver is able to do it on both ends of the floor and they get the win tonight an impressive one second

Stop on a five-game road trip for them all in the Eastern Conference after losing in philadelph back in December of 2000 game road trip tonight in Portland and how about this both Tyrese halberton and Pascal cakam will be active and ready to go against the Trailblazers halton’s been out with a ham string

Injury and of course zakum traded from Toronto on Wednesday night to the Pacers trade deadline is coming up on February 9th former Sons general manager NBA TV contributor Ryan mcdna jumps in to talk the trade market I’m just going to start calling you our our NBA TV general manager if that’s okay with

You it’s certainly okay with me Matt hopefully that comes with the seven figure contract and benefits and all the perks and if if that is the case uh sign me up I’ll even give a little bit to coach Mitchell and Coach Jer as my co-agents unfortunately I do not have

The authority to negotiate that with you but you know you can you can try it’s it’s worth a shot why not uh first let’s get to what has already happened with the Raptors sending out both OG an anobi and cakam already as you look at what they’ve gotten back what stands out from

The Toronto side in terms of what they received and where they’re going next this is something that Messi jery and the Toronto Raptors have fought for years ever since Kawhi Leonard won the championship in 2019 and then walk kned out the door to LA and joined the

Clippers in free agency Toronto has not wanted to rebuild they’ve wanted to try to stay competitive and win as many ball games as possible and I think eug realized that this group had run its course uh they obviously hung a banner in t Toronto and those flags fly forever

In terms of the championship in 2019 but they had a couple players in OG anobi and Pascal sakam core guys for the Raptors who were approaching unrestricted free agency uh so Toronto decided they did not want to let those guys walk out the door they also did not

Want to take it right down to the wire because sometimes if you take it right down to the wire this year the trade deadline is on February 8th uh then the offers if they’re not great at the last minute the deadline can come and go and

You can be left holding the bag so to speak so I think Toronto wanted to get out ahead of it um they got good value and they got a couple of young players uh in the deal from New York in RJ Barrett and Emanuel quickley who have

Fit right in so far in Raptor’s uniforms well the rumors have been percolating for weeks now about who might be on the Move let’s go through the five players you think are most likely to land in a new spot before the deadline yeah you see the list there I’m

Looking at Chicago and some late breaking news this evening that Zack LaVine is out for another week or two per sham chirania um that’s going to hurt his trade market we know the market has been cool for Zack LaVine and Matt the contracts are so important in these

Situations as you know LaVine has three years and $138 million remaining after this season so he missed 18 games earlier this year he’s another week or two and keep in mind that at this point we’re within 3 weeks of the trade deadline so there’s not that much time

And teams are generally hesitant to trade for an injured player uh and then I’m also looking right there in your backyard at dejonte muray the Hawks gave up a lot to get him a few years ago keep in mind they still owe three first round

Picks or swaps from 2025 all the way out until 2027 to San Antonio um one of the fascinating scenarios for me here Matt is the spurge reported have interest in bring Mari back would Atlanta be willing to unwind some of that would they be willing to to take back some of those

Picks and swaps and things like that and just kind of reset it and move forward without Marie and then the most interesting team to me is the Golden State Warriors we see the third guy in that list and Andrew Wiggins are they finally willing to break it down would

They move on from Wiggins who was an instrumental piece of their championship team just a few years ago um would they look at moving Draymond Green or Klay Thompson who are going to to the Hall of Fame someday based on what they did in Warriors uniforms uh just hasn’t worked

Out as well as Golden State thought they’re a sub 500 team they’re currently 12th and out of the playin tournament and um you know Joe lob has written as many big checks as any owner mat but they’re looking at close to a $200 million luxury tax bill that is bigger

Than a lot of teams total payroll and that’s that’s just for luxury tax since they’re a repeater team um so I I have my eye on the Warriors is the most interesting team and then the final two guys you see there Malcolm Brogden and tus Jones I I I think they would both

Help teams who are contending who need point guard depth uh those guys are excellent backup point guards in some scenarios they can be starting point guards um Brogden has one more year left on his deal that may chill the market for him somewhat but tus Jones is on an

Expiring deal and and I have circled as a guy who would help a lot of Championship contenders I going to touch on the Warriors again because you just talked about their situation regarding the luxury tax and all the punitive penalties that they’re potentially facing in terms of uh you know writing

Very very large checks moving forward for a team that’s not in a position to contend right now if you take sentiment out of it Ryan is there an argument to be made to start the rebuild there I think that’s easy for us to say and and there would be some logic behind

That um but what they would be doing is essentially writing off the career of not only the best player in Warriors franchise history in Steph Curry but one of the best players in the history of the NBA and so logic ically that does make some sense but in reality I don’t

Think they will do that Matt keep in mind they’re the highest grossing Revenue team in the league they sell tickets and sweets uh for a lot of money and the business part of it certainly is significant especially when you’ve been the most successful team in the NBA over

The past decade which the Warriors have with their four championships um so I I I think uh more likely they would look to upgrade their roster uh try to at least get into the playin and give Steph and likely Klay and Draymond a chance to win in the playin or playoff if they

Make it that far uh so I’m looking at some of their young guys would they put Jonathan kaminga in play he has some value Moses Moody has a little bit less value he hasn’t been in the rotation as much and then uh the rookie Brandon psky

Uh he has a lot of value I don’t think they’re going to want to trade him but um you know golden state has resisted trading young players Matt is this the time where they finally pulled the trigger and put some of those young guys in play to get Steph and Clay some help

Well two teams that probably thought they’d be better off Midway through the season which is where we are right now now the Suns and the Lakers sitting eighth and 10th in the west respectively not a lot of flexibility for these two because of what they gave up to get the

Guys on their roster currently what would the two teams like to do and what is feasible keep in mind the salary March matching piece of it is so important in today’s NBA and these teams are very topheavy in terms of the talent at the top of the roster but also the payroll

Uh for the Lakers LeBron James and Anthony Davis you see it there they make more than double the highest paid player D’Angelo Russell Lakers only have a few other guys who make more than $5 million um so essentially Russell ruy haimura Austin Reeves or Gabe Vincent one or a

Couple of those guys probably has to be in a deal Matt to bring back a significant player in return from a salary matching perspective uh the Lakers are also a team with very limited trade assets they owe first to New Orleans and Utah over the next three or

Four years and their young players don’t have a lot of trade value so I know the Lakers are generally the most discussed team in the NBA especially with the great LeBron James still playing at such a high level but they don’t have very many assets and they don’t have very

Much Financial flexibility so Rob pink and his staff are going to have to get creative if they want to upgrade alongside LeBron and AD and then then shifting to Phoenix uh we talk about the Lakers lack of assets the Suns in my opinion have more Talent with their top

Three in Kevin Durant Bradley be and Deon Booker uh but all those guys Matt make 20 to 30 million more than the sun’s fourth highest paid player who is Yousef nurkic uh they need nurkic they also need Grayson Allen who’s been excellent in his son’s uniform he is

Their fifth highest paid player and the reason I bring that up is their salary structure falls off a cliff after that so it’s really hard to come up with contracts uh to stack to make a trade work and then keep in mind um they’ve given up just about every first round

Pick in swap over the next seven or eight years all the way out until 2030 uh to that’s what they did to get Durant and Bradley Beal in the first place um so they probably have fewer assets than any team in the league and uh they’re

Going to have to get very creative to surround those three stars with some depth to compete in the playoffs so of those two and it sounds like you’ll say the Lakers which is in a better spot to do something if they want to I think it is the Lakers and I I

Think the Lakers need more help than than Phoenix I mean we’ll see what it looks like with Beal Durant and Booker healthy but certainly those three guys offensively are good enough they have the potential to be the best offensive team in the league so I think the Lakers

Need to do something and they want to do something the guy I I have my eye on that they they do not want to trade Matt he’s not one of the best non- rookie scale contracts in the league but that is Austin Reeds he only makes about 12

Or 13 million a year he has a lot of value a lot of fans around the league they don’t want to put him in play I think they prefer to do a deal with the Angelo Russell going out instead uh but will they be able to do that especially

Given the lack of young players and lack of draft picks uh that remains to be seen I I guess we’ll find out over the next few weeks all right let’s check in on the Champs who are in the middle of a crucial stretch of schedule five-game road trip in the Eastern Conference the

Nuggets bench is currently ranked 25th this season in net rating but this is another franchise with not a bunch of flexibility how can they improve it if they’re inclined you’re right they don’t have very much flexibility at all Bruce Brown walked out the door uh to Indiana he got

That big deal from the Pacers um so they’re more reliant on younger players uh like Payton Watson in in Pre in um on the roster to contribute in a playoff um so so I I look at Denver trying to improve around the margins I don’t think they’ll move obviously Nicole yic Jamal

Murray Aaron Gordon uh and cavius Caldwell Pope who’s been one of the best statistical guys in the league as far as plus minus um so they they do have some draft picks available going forward they have some committed but they have some of their own um you know they have some

Young players with value in pton Watson and Christian Brown I I know they don’t want to trade those guys but yeah they if they feel like they need upgrade Julian Str the rookie out of Gonzaga has played relatively well so um they they have less Financial flexibility and less

Assets than some teams but for a contender M there certainly have more ways to make a deal work than do the Phoenix Suns or the LA Lakers there’s also this to consider statistically the bench was worse last year and that worked out just fine yeah I I think I’d be interested to

Get coach Mitchell and Coach Jagger’s opinions on this but I think in the playoffs if you’re healthy the bench can be overrated sometimes if the coaches are willing to ride their top guys 38 to 42 minutes a night yeah sometimes you only need a few enough bench guys to

Hold the fort until the starters get back in the game all right Ryan great stuff as always we appreciate it we’ll see you on the trade deadline February 8th I think I said the nth it’s February 8th right here enemy on enemy double kill enemy triple kill your tower has

  1. Really great game. That was as close to a playoff game as you're going to see in the regular season. Jokic and Murray looked exactly like they did during last year's playoffs. I thought the difference in the game was Boston's sometimes questionable shot selection. The Nuggets played excellent defense in the second half but got helped out by the Celtics jacking up some bad shots.

  2. Don't you see- When it's hard, MPJ is there, he plays best when it's the hardest. MPJ has a guaranteed 33 million per season. His game against Boston is top defense, historic 3-point percentages, his assists were great, MPJ will be an ALL Star starter

  3. Only troubling thing for Denver, Tatum and brown were terrible from the field and only won by 2! Other guys have to step up
