Chris Biderman on the value of Harrison Barnes with the Kings
Chris Beerman joins us of the Sacramento beat and the Candlestick Chronicles Chris how you doing on this Tuesday morning I’m outstanding even better that uh that the lead in music was Return of the Mac there you go coming back that’s because you’re here returning Return of
The ma Chris we were all in the building last night Kings get back on the winning side of things what what stuck out to you the most from that W against the short-handed Hawks you know honestly I thought it was a really weird game and as well you know as like the score
Indicated that the Kings sort of blew him out but it never really felt like the Kings played all that well um it felt like the Hawks are missing a ton of shots but offensively you know go going into the half having Harrison Barnes with 19 points and being the only guy in
Double figures while Deen Fox and deonas sabonis had had you know slow scoring nights um was it was just weird you you would think that you know coming off of three days rest given what the king’s schedule had been there would have been far more offensive punch I think
Particularly from Fox and and watching Fox closely last night just I he just doesn’t seem right and I I don’t know what’s going on with him whether it’s um a personal issue I know last night he he spoke to R Jason Anderson and and Fox 40 Sean Cunningham before the game breaking
I think it was a 16-day silence streak when it came to speaking to reporters um you know I don’t don’t know what’s going on with Fox but he doesn’t seem like he’s the same guy um his scoring is down what nine points in in January from December um his three-point shoot or his
Two-point shooting is is substantially worse than it was early on in the season so I’m curious to see what’s going on with him but when it came to last night the Kings handled business for sure but it was kind of a kind of a weird performance given how it all played out
Yeah Chris I would definitely say the weirdest thing was uh frankly Harrison BS dropping 32 out of nowhere what what have you made of hb’s season and and what do you just kind of think you know a lot has been made of what his value is in the open market and you know
HB having you know some questionable stat lines here especially as of late but what do you just kind of think of the Season he’s had in total and uh maybe some of the misunderstandings if you think there are any and and what his value what you perceive his value to be to this
Team yeah I mean I I think you know his value is is mostly intangible right he’s he’s v he’s a veteran he’s older than a lot of the core guys um you know you have guys like Daren Fox and deis sabonis who are in their mid 20s and
Harrison Barnes obviously in his in his 30s um I wonder about his health you know you saw him wearing the knee sleeve um you know I don’t think it’s and Malik monk alluded to it and Mike Brown sort of talked about it too postgame that you
Know having three days off and getting a big Harrison Barnes performance doesn’t seem like a coincidence right so um in terms of his value to the Kings like I said you know the the 17 million a year that they signed him to in the offseason is sort of the going rate for
A starting Wing in the league right now but um I don’t know that you know it feels like he he would certainly be one of the guys to go if they were to make a deal right like I think I think that’s pretty much assumed and you do wonder
You know as as professional as Harrison Barnes is you do wonder if that’s if that’s eating at him in any way because you know he did make the decision to resign here and I’m assuming that he he made that decision understanding that getting traded was a possibility um but
You know you have to wonder just from a human element is that impacting him in the type of season he’s having and and Mike Brown also made an interesting point last night to postgame when talking about the Kings and how how much they emphasize Pace offensively you know
They they typically have three scoring options on the court or at least in their starting lineup and then four when you have Malik monk out there and Keegan Murray dearen Fox de man sabonis and Malik at times um when they want to play fast it’s hard for them to get to their
Fourth and fifth option offensively so so you know that guy is obviously Harrison Barnes so that that I think does goes a decent way towards explaining why Harrison Barnes can have nights where he has you know two or three or four shot attempts um but last night was interesting because they were
Just going to him they’re feeding him they thought he was hot and and they kept they kept giving him the ball and and letting him isolate which was interesting which we haven’t seen a whole lot but um I think you know Barnes is is a good player obviously not a
Great player he’s he’s obviously at the back nine of his career and I would imagine that if the Kings do make a substantial trade here before the deadline next month that that Barnes name is going to be included talking to Chris Beerman of the canas SI Chronicles
And the Sacramento B Let’s cross over to ners Ville Chris as they will host the Lions this weekend when you look at this matchup what is the main thing that worries you as far as the Lions and what they bring to the table um well as far as the Lions go I I
Think it’s the offensive line and the The Playmakers they have offensively um the ners pass rush simply wasn’t good enough against the Packers and and we haven’t really seen it be as dominant as it was um in in recent seasons and and you remember 2019 how good that pass
Rush was how dominant it was and was really sort of the calling card for the team it hasn’t really been at that level and they didn’t sack Jordan love on Saturday night um and you know Nick Bose had five quarterback hits and Nick Bose’s pressure numbers are always going
To be really good um but the 49ers have to just get off the field they have to make Jared gof uncomfortable and they have right Jared goof hasn’t beaten the 49ers since 2018 um before the team obviously became a juggernaut in the NFC um and you know the Lions have a really
Good offensive line with pen Su and and r now at Center um a couple of all pros and so uh you know that that they need they need Jayvon Hargrave to to cause Havoc they need you know Eric Armstead to to penetrate and and provide a boost
On on the interior pass rush coming off the knee and and foot injuries that that prevented him from playing for a while so you know alond ra St Brown against Ambry Thomas that’s that certainly seems like a mismatch favoring favoring the lions at this point given the way Ambry
Thomas played against the Packers and and you have Sam aorta um and you have jir Gibbs who’s who’s a real problem athletically out of the backfield as a pass catcher um and the ners run defense frankly hasn’t been all that good in recent weeks and it certainly wasn’t
That good Saturday um against the Packers and and the Lions have David Montgomery who was a thousand yard rusher and Gibbs who was close to a thousand yard rusher and and is lethal out of the backfield and I haven’t even mentioned their tight end in s La pora
So um yeah you could you look at jarro goff’s numbers outside the Dome and you know his passer rating I think is 20 point lower thereabouts when when he’s playing outside this year um and I would expect the 49ers defense to play better than it did against the Packers but you
Know the Lions pose pose an interesting threat with all of their weapons and with the fact they have an elite offensive line um because you know the 49ers typically have have their way with opponents when they control the line of scrimmage defensively and and frankly I don’t know that they’re going to against
The Lions based on how good their line is and and how the how the 49ers pass rush has played in recent weeks Chris simple question uh Niners lose three games this year in the regular season with Debo hurt with his shoulder uh on Saturday you see Debo get hurt uh again
His shoulder get hurt uh and the ners just I mean they just didn’t look like themselves uh on on Saturday especially on the offensive end can the ners be effective without Deo Samuel at full strength they should be I mean we we haven’t seen it right I mean that that’s
That like the the one of the arguments I made when they made the Christian mcaffrey trade and obviously that trade has has been a huge Boon for the ners um but was just you know adding another guy should make you better prepared or have a better insurance plan for injuries
Right like Christian mcaffry and Debo Samuel can do a lot of the same things whether it’s running the ball whether it’s bubble screens um Christian mcaffry is obviously good at at at running routes too but we haven’t really seen that for the N from the ners they they
Just seem out of sorts when they don’t have Debo and and it’s been sort of this weird thing with Kyle Shanahan as good as an offensive play caller an offensive designer as he is the offense just doesn’t feel like it has the same juice when Debo Samuel’s not there and you
Should look at you know having Brandon iuk and and Christian mcaffrey and and George KD available that would still if it’s just those three guys that would still comprise one of the best group of skill positions or skill groups in the league um and then you add Debo Samuel
To it and then you’re you’re pretty comfortably saying it’s the best group of skill guys in the league um but for whatever reason when they’ve when they’ve missed him it it it hasn’t looked good now I think the 49ers are going to make that decision pretty early in the week despite whatever reportings
Out there and despite him being listed as questionable going into Sunday which I would imagine you know publicly it’s going to be a game time decision but I think the 49ers are going to know either by today or tomorrow whether or not Debo Samuel’s going to play and they’re going
To game plan accordingly um the Lian defense isn’t great I think they’re 30th in the NFL and in EPA per play um so you know that outside of Aiden Hutchinson which could be problematic against Colton mckivitz um I don’t know that that you really fear a whole lot of from this lion
Defense so the 49ers should be good enough to beat the Lions if they don’t have Debo and and I’m all for you know if it were me I would I would assume the 49ers could be good enough and and create a game plan strong enough to beat
The Lions and and ensure Debo Samuels healthy for the Super Bowl because you remember you know Debo Samuel missed three weeks when when he suffered that injury in Cleveland and you do not want him obviously to to not be available for the Super Bowl so as tough as it might
Be not to play him in the NFC championship game if you can ensure that he’d at least be available for the Super Bowl should you get there I think that’s the route I would take um but it is a difficult decision because you know it’s a winter go home scenario and the 49s
Haven’t haven’t won a whole lot without Depo samel this year Chris Beerman K C Chronicles Sacramento be Chris thank you so much we look forward to the rest of your coverage of the Kings and the ners moving forward talk to you next week I I appreciate it I had all these Brock pie
Stats these Tom see but here’s the thing though but here’s the thing though we see everybody’s talking Brock okay we have to we have to talk deeper than Brock but okay for fine here’s a bonus for you just real quick real quick why do why why does everybody hate the Niners now
When did that happen uh I don’t know maybe because they dominate the discussion but I I just wanted to make the point ners fatigue yeah Niners fatigue um I don’t know I think Brock P’s just polarizing and people feel like they have to be on either side of of the spectrum when it
Comes to their pry takes when really the the Acura take is probably somewhere in the middle that he’s not amazing but he’s not complete garbage either so is there any okay any other stats I know you did your research you got it down so now I feel bad any other stats you want
To throw to us yeah so so Tom Tom Brady had a lower passer rating than Brock C’s uh on Saturday in 22 of his 48 playoff games and pton Manning had a lower passer rating in 13 of his 27 playoff games the point I’m making here is that
Even the elite Hall of Fame Championship level quarterbacks had Duds in the postseason and one dud from Brock pie on Saturday doesn’t mean that he can’t potentially help the 49ers win a Super Bowl there you go boom dro the mic thank you very much Chris pman we will talk to you next week
The Sacramento Kings get back in the win column with Harrison Barnes stepping up big.
Plus, the Miami Heat make a trade with the Charlotte Hornets and do the 49ers need Deebo Samuel Sunday against the Lions?
Thank you for watching. Don’t forget to hit the thumbs up and subscribe!
