The NBA isn’t ready for this

The NBA isn’t ready for this

It’s been a while since we had a conversation context has changed team has changed how are you doing I’m doing well man how are you congratulations on your success as we talked about off air nothing yet I think your your temperament is a lot better this year we

Like you and that could that could be a metric that shows why your channel is growing so much this year because your temperament is so much Better so let’s talk about the offseason and the work you guys did what was the plan what were your days like what was the communication like with the Toronto Raptors how involved were they Etc I was up here for the last Chicago game he took that pretty tough I mean as we all

Did because we thought that we were going to win that one after the season yeah he text me some things that he wanted to work on and improve upon the Raptor sent me um a lot of stuff that they wanted him to work on via email I

Mean I I was formulating the things that I was seeing as well um then I mean we got we got right back to work I mean I think it was maybe a week after the season we was right back uh you know going um every single day probably like

Four or five days a week uh so it started really fast and um I think the the biggest thing that we all wanted him to do is just to just trust his three-point shot more and just shoot more threes uh just because we knew that

That would be able to you know not only give space to the other guys on the team um but also make defenses play him um at 25 ft and we all know that if they have to play him at 25 fet it’s going to be a

Long night for someone so uh that was our that was our our goal was just to improve his just is all around guard Stills cuz we especially once we knew that Fred wasn’t coming back that he would have a lot more ball handling responsibilities and different things

Like that so just you know the main thing was just to make sure that we improved upon this three-point shooting and and then we just I tried to identify spots on the floor where he could have something to go to uh wherever he’s at on the floor so that was pretty much it

And uh you know the Raptors would check in weekly make sure you know what were we doing or Roo was still on staff and Jim they came down one workout just to have you know basically a check-in I mean everybody kind of knew what we had

To work on so it wasn’t too difficult it was just the work just had to be put in there was a lot made about work ethic last year I thought it was cap I thought it was [ __ ] but was there an extra gear is there something because everyone

Can get better right everyone can take something a little bit more seriously anyone everyone can adjust small things was there an adjustment to how he approached workouts did you noticed I think he he’s always approached workout the right way but he was a little more intentional on he just worked harder

Than he had ever worked before and it was just his level was at a more consistent basis I mean if you a lot of people don’t recall like the after his rookie season he had that crazy ankle injury so and they played a little bit longer into the season so we weren’t

Able to get um into the into our workouts as quickly as we were this last off season just because you kind of had to slowly improve uh push them just because the ankle was still so tender but this year he just hit the ground running and he was very focused and very

Um intent but that’s you know maturity being 20 being 21 and now being 20 22 so he’s definitely just growing that aspect as well and and it shows like clearly it showed from training camp it was like right away there was a step where maybe last year you’re like could he be the

Best player on the team to Boom he’s the best player on the team and there’s some really good players on that team there was a coaching shift for the Toronto Raptors and I was very very pleased about it I think I messaged you right away and I said this guy is awesome for

Scotty he’s going to be great for Scotty and I message Jason the same thing how was the communication like with j and Darko and the new coaching staff and you know how how do you feel it has helped Scotty’s game because a lot can be said

About the work you put in with him but the rest of the year he’s with the team a lot of it is with the team what they’re working on how they’re setting him up in the offense so what was the conversation like with you and how do

You feel that the coaching staff has unlocked him or do you think they’ve unlocked him I had a couple conversations with Darko I talked to Messiah and Bobby everyone was just saying shooting you know like that’s just you know everybody had everybody was on the same page as far as we really

Need to improve a shooting I me you know that was obvious everybody could understand that he’s seeing different coverages and different things like that so I think they’ve given him the ball giv him the opportunity to we’re all still learning about Scotty like he’s still learning about his game um and I

Think that’s why Darko was such a great uh fit just because he was it was going to be about developing him you know so you know I’m still learning a lot about just how we can continue to improve him and I think the the staff they’re on the same

Page too but I think now there’s a there’s like the clearest direction that it’s been you know since um he’s been with the Raptor so I think that helps a lot too no OG you know no Pascal Fred’s gone a lot of teammates going in and out how difficult is it to

Lose so many guys you came into the league with I mean I I know this this might shock you but do you realize that Gary Trent Jr and Chris bue get traded he’s the longest 10e Raptor on the team is there like an emotional toll to that

How do you keep him grounded because yo he’s 22 years old this is not easy I mean it’s it’s difficult I think it’s difficult from a bunch of standpoints it’s difficult off the court you know these are people who you like he basically grew up with you know so I

Think that part of of is difficult I think the en court is difficult too because we’ve seen him be in the league for three years and his role has dramatically shift I’m not saying year to year like he was like kind of like the secondary you know playmaker and

Then he shifted to being they had him playing point a couple games and now with Yak out he’s playing a lot of five it’s good and bad you know it’s you may see his learning curve you know I mean go up and down just because he’s faced

With different things but I think for him to be who we all think that he’s going to be these are things that are necessary if he’s going to be like the the centerpiece of the solar system of what the Raptors are these are good these are good things you know it’s good

Good experience for him good things for him to learn um and when you’re pushed in this level where how he’s pushed it’s only going to help him grow so it’s it’s just it’s the business you know what I mean so he’s he’s learning about that he’s learning a lot on the court he’s

Learning a lot off the court but these are all positive things to help Scotty become the best person he’s gonna be yeah um when you lose teammates that sucks a lot has been made of his relationship with OG it’s fairly transparent on the court when the two

Met up when they played New York that the bond was like it was deep right you could see it like you could always see it on the court that they had a real connection but when players go out players come in what was your reaction to the Raptor trading for Emanual

Quickly and RJ Barrett you and I have talked off the Record about the types of players that Scotty would Thrive with I had really interesting reaction to Emanuel quickley and RJ Barrett what was your reaction I I think it was good I think I like I think New York was kind

Of in a weird place with RJ where they had him he they had him playing in the corner you know what I mean holding the corner a lot of times and that’s not really playing to the player strength I think you’ve seen him I’ve really been

Impressed with how he moves off the ball you know like it and his attack and transition so I think that he I think that he’s a good fit especially when you get Scotty on the posting up and then you have a a guy on the weak side who can really cut and

Shift the defense same thing with quickley I think quickley is a I think he’s an amazing talent I don’t think that he’s like a point guard point guard per se you know but I think that from the second side he can really stretch the defense and he can really attack um

If the goal is I mean since the goal is for Scotty to be the main initiator of the offense I think Scotty draws a lot of attention and then he kicks it to you know both of those guys and able to attack you know what I mean on the

Second side and I think those guys are both great second side um attackers hey quick word from our sponsor the Penance Film Festival is happening February 22nd to 25th it is a celebration of international films it is a brilliant film festival in its seventh season prior to the covid pandemic it was the

Fastest growing film festival in the world what is my affiliation with Penance what are they paying me to say this well I am Penance I’m the festival director and founder of penance it is my baby and if you love great films if you have a film lover in your life this is a

Worthwhile event for you happening in downtown Toronto at the Carlton Cinema uh February 22nd to 25th make sure to check this out link is in the description below for tickets and passes tickets will go on sale soon passes are already on sale let’s get to this you uh

You talked last year about the yic stuff I think I think you were on with Amit man and CJ Miles and you you were talking about like it drew it caught a lot of people whoa did he say Nicole yic in terms of the Denver offense and how

It you know moves around joic I’ve watched a lot of yic in my life and I can’t help but see like comparisons to how they use him and how the Raptors could use Scotty do you think that Emanuel quickley can serve in some of the same places on the court as a Jamaal

Murray because he’s not a prototypical point guard either but he has some of that you know primary secondary qualities that I think IQ has I think it’s a little bit different just because um I mean the the nuggets run a lot of stuff like I seen you know the Joker

Come off freaking Ivers and cuts to you know what I mean the mid post on the wing I seen they use him a lot of different ways but I think Scotty um going forward probably have the ball in his hands from you know starting in ball screens and different things like that

So it’s a little bit different um but I think the similarities are there where you have a unconventional guy who’s initiating your offense right and then you just put and then it’s okay for you know I think some of the reasons why people didn’t know if quickly was a

Point guard they didn’t know like what type of point guard he was but I think if he doesn’t have to be the main main initiator of your offense I think I think it works I think it works really well the Knicks tried this thing with IQ in the second year and his numbers

Dipped and the Raptors are doing pretty much the same thing with IQ this year and his numbers have dipped in Toronto and that’s basically like trying to run him as a 25 27 assist percent kind of guy like doing a lot more of the passing and I agree with you that longterm he’s

Really like he’s going to Blitz above the break like he’s going to be bombing 30 30 foot 3s and and I think that that sort of like that creates all the angles that you need to really unlock a guy like Scotty and I think the two can just

Kill it in two man action so I was very very excited I love OG anobi you know like I always wanted to see OG and Scotty win championships and hang banners together and you got to you got to get something to lose something and or you got to lose something and get

Something and I thought IQ was just perfect for Scotty’s game speaking of you know all the different things that Scotty’s had to do I agree you know he’s been a center a power forward a small forward he started at every single position defensively offensively he’s been fourth option fifth option First

Option second option it’s crazy but I also think it’s great it’s great because if you want to see the player that you have right you know the player you have you consider Detroit right now do they know what K Cunningham looks like as a second option op they do not do they

Know what he looks like as a fourth option they don’t they only know him in one role I think the Raptors know Scotty in like a hundred different roles but now no Pascal no Fred I think the role is starting to become a lot clearer the

Path is starting to become a lot simpler how does that change or simplify your role as a trainer in terms of the types of things you got to prepare him for season to season doesn’t change much you know because he knows how he wants to play and he knows things that he he

Wants to do on a court so it doesn’t change a lot it’s just um I think the biggest thing is the experience understanding how to read the coverages and coverages they change from game to game and it’s a lot more uh attention to detail because different teams are

You’re the main focus on you know if you want to beat the Raptors you got to you got to stop this guy so I think it’s a lot it’s going to be a lot more cerebral understanding how to pick your spots in the game and and having a real sense of

What what’s going on with the team you know are we they started so slow against Memphis you know maybe that’s a that’s a Time Scotty when when you just like kind of take over the offense until everybody gets in the Rhythm you know if guys are

Going like how we were going in in Golden State when everybody’s hitting threes or Miami everybody’s hitting the ball’s moving maybe you can just chill and just wait until you know the fourth quarter to turn it on or you know it’s three or four possessions where you guys

Haven’t gotten a good shot can you get to the line can do something get to the line or get us easy basket so it’s like those little things with the game like the game within the game that he’s going to continue to get better at and I think

Those are things that only experience can help you know he’s always going to do the on the court stuff he’s always going to you know work on his game work on his game extra shooting ball handling all that other stuff but it’s just realizing um how the defense is playing

You and you know seeing you know I’ve seen this coverage before I haven’t seen this coverage before you know what I mean once you get those reps and those those situations and that’ll really help the game um I mean ease the game for him

And I think that I think he sees it I think he sees it he sees it better than 99% of the players in the NBA like he sees what plays sometimes you know like he might I think on Monday he had the ball on the Block and he tried to skip

It all the way to the corner it was just bad execution of the play it might have been like he’s seeing the rotations before the rotations even even happen and I mean you saw it in the fourth quarter where he he basically like willed them to I mean the third quarter

Where he uh he basically like got them kept them in the game and got them back into you know within Striking Distance just by you know identifying the mismatches and attacking the mismatches and a couple guys missed a couple easy ones but it was still always the right

Play so no you’re right I mean finishing Talent finish finishing Talent around you know on the team sometimes s you start looking at potential assists I don’t know if you track potential assists but it’s crazy how many potential assists he rocks up every single game and the shot quality on

Those assists like I say like um assists are not made equal like there are a lot of guys who just get like eight nine assists out of the system and the flow of the offense just by hot potatoing it but he creates like serious advantages like he’s Shifting the defense and I

Couldn’t help but notice yesterday I’ve been I’ve been sort of watching these Indiana Pacers games and I’m watching like the Pacers drop it into Pascal and and he just kind of like pushes it out and I’m like yeah it’s the right play but there’s something else that’s

Missing on that play that maybe a superstar would have like done something to the defense shifted it before mold and molded a little bit so he does all of that it’s just you can’t make shots for other guys um and so I’m looking forward to seeing how much that

Playmaking Talent is going to be expanded obviously by more offensive Talent like I’ve always said like Scotty’s the type of guy where the better the players around him the better he’s going to look um that’s not always the case for some guys some guys the better players around them it doesn’t

Matter yeah but yeah for sure and I think um n as he as he grows like he’ll be able to get guys shots he’ll be able to get guys shots uh even in a more in the in the his shot their shot creation will be a lot better like their assist

Will be a lot better so no I agree 100% there’s a talk about um a sometimes where you have a prospect who’s really in the gym working six hours 5 hours a day a guy like AJ debono or Cooper flag like these five star type recruits and

Then you have their teammates who aren’t that like sometimes their teammates aren’t that and the right play is to pass it to that guy is the technically the right play but then how do you choose no you know what I’m the pro I’m the guy who’s going to be McDonald’s

All-American I got to go do this and there’s been a frequent charge against Scotty and a criticism that what if he did what what he does in some of these fourth quarters for an entire game could he rack up 50 60 points do you understand that like criticism and what

Would you say to it yeah for sure I think anybody who’s watching see how dominant he becomes at certain points of the game that’s fair criticism but I I don’t think anyone and I I don’t you’ll probably contract this more than I can but this guy rotates crazy on defense

This guy is all overow on defense so it’s fair um but I think that’s another part of his growth you know it’s it’s G to happen at some point but I think he’s he’s still just learning and he’s still just getting better but I think his

Effort on the defensive end like a lot of guys like like a lot of guys in this league are scoring in the high 20s but I don’t think a lot of guys are responsible for guarding other team’s best player um and I don’t think a lot

Of guys like give the type of defensive effort that he does um on a daily basis and I think that’s that’s the good thing about them um like like the first time they play Memphis like he started out on John Mor and then fourth quarter he was

Guarding um jiren Jackson you know what I mean like name another Superstar that’s doing that or another guy in the NBA that’s doing that so um I know had a bad game he had a pretty badame Steph had a bad game too yes he did you know

What I mean so he he he he oh my God like that was that was one of the do you okay this might blow your mind I don’t know if you uh saw this did you know that was the worst Game of st’s Life yeah I saw your Tweet

Okay of course I did see everything that was crazy man like I mean I was I was so proud of him because I know you know here’s the thing there are guys who can defend there are guys who want to defend there are guys who like they enjoy defending Scotty enjoys defending I

Noticed notice about him in like very early he gets like a pleasure of doing that and I talk a lot about you know the solar of the game the the the game that I grew up loving the players that I loved you know guys who don’t cheat the

Game to me Scott’s like a guy who doesn’t cheat the game on that end and I remember having a conversation with rashan nesterovich if you remember who rash nesterovich was in 2006 and he talked about Tim Duncan this notion of when you’re star player whatever your star player

Believes that’s what your team sort of like believes so if your star player is out there guard Steph Curry and sacrificing his legs on offense then your second guy can’t say [ __ ] if the coach chews out your star player and the star player is like yep my bad if your

Star player is coachable so that’s one element of leadership but there’s also other elements of leadership too I think a lot of questions have been asked recently since Pascal seakan has been traded Fred Van B’s gone how is Scotty as a leader he’s been asked about this

Directly he’s just like I try to be happy you know know I don’t think he’s necessarily honed the perfect scripted response to how he leads but you’ve seen him for years how does Scotty lead who is Scotty Barnes as a leader again like he’s still 22 and he’s still finding his

Voice on you know how to express um things the right way because he always wants to do things the right way um so I think he he leads first by example you know he comes in every single day does his work um we always talk about never

Being too high never being too low and I think he’s done a great job of maintaining that temperament throughout this year I think it was a lot better than last year and I think it was a lot better than the year before I think that he leads again first with his effort

First with uh through him just being himself um I think he he’s he’s also just going to find continue to find his voice and his place on the team um on and again all of this stuff is just it’s a process you know so I think he’s he

Everyone understands now I think it was a little bit we didn’t really everybody didn’t really know like whose team it was but I think now we have a clear uh I knew I mean I knew too but we have a clear everyone has a clear you know

Direction on who’s the guy so I think he accepts that responsibility and it’s it’s just a learning process does he need to be more vocal like I I mean I understand that it will come it doesn’t come right away for everybody it didn’t come right away for

Kevin Garnett it didn’t come right away for LeBron James it does take some time but does he need to do it at some point like that and but by vocal I don’t mean punching I don’t mean punching you know Jordan pool in the face I I mean like if

There’s a problem with a teammate do you need to be the one to stand up and say we’re not doing this today I I don’t like to speak on things that I’m not around so I’m not around them as a team so I don’t really I don’t I don’t know

Like their full team Dynamic I don’t know if LeBron ever did that you know like and to say that it was LeBron a bad leader you know what I mean so it’s like every guy’s gonna he’s going to find his way my whole philosophy is I don’t like

To limit him to you need to do this like I want you to really be who you want to be and you know find that and do what it takes to win so if that’s what it takes then that’s may be what it takes I think

I think that’s a fair point you know he does do whatever his team needs him to do you know there’s a lot of criticism recently about about yanis Sans TMO not wanting to set screens they would run Twan action Adrien Griffin gets fired that’s okay I love the fact that Scotty

Will do whatever is required of him to win he will set screens he will box out he does all the dirty work I love that and I love the fact that he is my Superstar you have often said 15% to me this is like a catchphrase for you 15%

Every single time I see this and and at one time I was like is it 16% yet you still coming back to 15% of course basically Brian’s way of that Scotty isere close to what he will eventually be now just for context 15% is I don’t

Know a top 20 player in the NBA right now pretty much solid Allstar type player he should be I I I think he would be an All-Star if the team was a little bit better what does 25% look like the the thing that that I’m really trying to

Get him to get to is to shoot 21 shots a game with the same percentages and I think lot of that is just again what I said earlier understanding the moments in the game um where you may need to get a get a couple shots up just so you can

Stay in a rhythm um within the offense and then the shoot the free throw line 25% he’ll be at like a 83 85% free throw shooter and he’ll be there eight times a game I think sometimes he gets fouled and it does just doesn’t look like he’s

Fouled because he’s so strong he doesn’t bait he doesn’t he doesn’t do all the flailing and I think I think I think we’ll get to the line there and I think once and then he’s got to play off of two feet a little bit more um I think he’s doing a

Lot better better job of it now but I think um a lot of times he was playing off of one foot kind of avoiding uh the contact but um I think playing off two feet um getting to the line like eight to nine times a game um and then

Maintaining those his percentages I think he’s always going to be a 48% from the field guy uh no matter what I think the the challenge is just going to be not the challenge I think the next step is just for for us to get him to where

He’s taking 22 shots a game and if you if he’s at the same percentage as he’s shooting 20 20 20 to 22 shots a game and he’s you know at the line eight more eight times a game and he gets to 83% he we’re at 27 points easy

So yeah yeah absolutely I know you’re a MTH gu did that’s 25% so yeah so that’s 25 next year next year I gotta I gotta talk to you about 27 point per game Scotty and then we’re going to ask what’s 35% and then we just we just this will be a yearly tradition

Every January we just talk about what the next 10 15 what percentage am what yeah I said yeah we we we’re just gonna see what percentage we’re operating I I I love this Brick by Brick approach that you have now I’m curious someone who maybe jumped the gun

A little bit but I was so proud of him dark rakovich going on that rant that went super viral thank you Doug thank you Doug that’s that’s that’s outrageous respect for all stars and all that but we have star players on our team as well how’s possible as Scotty Barnes who is

Allstar caliber player in this league he goes every single time to the rim with force and trying to get get to to the rim without flopping and and not trying to get foul calls he gets two uh threee throws for the whole game Scotty Barnes

Is going to be all star he’s going to be the face of this league and what what’s happening over here during whole season I’ve been calling you back it’s a complete that R went super viral how did you feel hearing a coach so emphatically defend Scotty like you could tell he he

Meant it that wasn’t a that wasn’t an act like he meant it calling him the face of the league um saying he’s going to be an Allstar what did that mean to you as his trainer n i I mean that’s how I feel I felt the same way that Darko

Does Darko is basically just saying this this is a like this is a player that really does everything the right way you know like he plays the game the right way he gives us full effort so if he’s getting to the line and it’s a

5050 at some point he’s got to get some so I think that was his main message I think that he he was also conveying that he really believes in Scotty like everyone in the organization everybody around him so um I mean that’s exactly how how I feel about him I think that’s

How Scotty feels about himself as well so um I just think that it was just like yo like this kid should he I mean you can even you can look at every game and you could say like he should be to the line a little bit more and I think

That’s that’s also that’s your reputation you know once you really get to that that that different level you get a different you know what I mean level of cause I think you seen the other night when Anthony Edwards was talking about Shay you know what I mean

Like it’s two different type of players so cuz Anthony Edwards gets hammered too but it just doesn’t look like a foul because he’s just so big and strong I think Scotty has a lot of bit of that where Shay’s a little bit more Ry I think Shay does a really good job of

Like intentionally like using his ball fakes and his fakes and things like that getting to the line but if you know what I mean like sometimes you’re sometimes Anthony like Scotty straight line driving people and people are really like pushing him off his spot you know

What I mean but you can’t really see it you may see it like you may see it with his posture if it was a you know I mean 64 190 200 pound guy like you’re going to see the the reaction he’d be flying so maybe maybe the goal for you is to

Make him less strong going into next season so he’ll fly around a little bit more um good news for Scotty he gets selected among the 41 players to be uh competing for the USA select team 12 roster spots available I think he should be on it what would it mean in terms of

Your planning for him next summer if he’s more involved the USA program a program that he’s already been a part of in the U6 uh he should have been on it last year I feel like uh I mean I think just because of he didn’t have the year that everyone

Thought he should have but with his he’s perfect for the international game because he can especially now that he can shoot the ball just because he’s such a you need guys who can really think the game on that level because that’s the only thing that the European

Uh teams are doing they’re thinking the game you know what I mean like they’re playing like they might get to the fourth side they Chang uh sides of the floor you need guys that be able to really lock down those uh um those very Dynamic guards and

Being able to you know I think with the switchability that the United States tries to do so much like a lot of times you get caught with a little on the big and and The Bigs in the international level they to finish at a very high

Level so I I think he’d be great on United States team I think the the being around the guys who are going to be on it that that would be a incredible experience what it does to his body you know I think that he’s already you know

He’s creeping around like 37 minutes a game so you know what I mean like will he go into year four you know what I mean with a little bit more wear and tear maybe will he not have the opportunity to work as much individually

As we would like him to maybe um it all determins on like their their playoff run as well if they can make it or what happens with that so there’s a lot of different factors but I think it’s so many there’s there’s good sides of I

Mean I think you said the same thing I feel like the the same way you feel about the allstar like would we be ecstatic that he freaking makes the All-Star team yes does he need a week off yes you know what I mean so it’s the

Same way about the summer like does he need like to really work on his body and really like prepare for like to be the main guy in the NBA season yes but would it be valuable to to watch and to work with Kevin Durant um LeBron James Steph

Curry every single day yes so I’m much much more pushing for him to make that select team than I am um the the allstar game the All-Star Game of course just a grind you know it’s the weekend you lose it he’s probably going to end up going down there anyway or doing something

Else but I think he could use the recovery the rest recovery but um playing around those those players it’s something like I mean actually both both things it changes your perspective and Status around the league right that guy was on Team USA the senior team or that

Guy was an All-Star is it’s a it’s a notch on your resume of something that separates you from your teammates frankly Scotty talks about uh jokingly mentioned on the game that was on um National TV how he wouldn’t mind getting into the gym with Vince Carter if there

Was a player in the league Pastor presid in his prime that you could lock him in the gym with for an entire week you know food water available but they’re in the gym for the whole week who is that player and why uh Kevin Durant um but

What’s more rare about Scotty Barnes is his his IQ for the game his length you know his enthusiasm for the game uh all of that stuff shines bright when you watch him play but he has something a little extra as far as just seeing the game a little slower you know and and

That’s rare for a guy how old is he 19 20 I mean she you know he knows how to play the right way and and um he’s only going to get better just because he’s so efficient scoring in the half court um I think in I think Scotty takes similar

Shots but I think Kevin Durant is like a master in half court offense and how to be efficient how to get to your spots and how to play the game at a high level that doesn’t require a lot of energy you know like he’s very efficient with every

Move that he does he’s not wasting a lot of energy getting to where he needs to be you know every night he’s 15 for he’s 15 out I mean he’s like 12 17 13 for 18 things like that so that’s the crazy thing so I’m actually uh yesterday I was

Talking to someone and I was like yo get me that KD interview I know three people who know him and I’m asking all of them to do it like get me a KD interview I need to sit down with him so if I do sit down with him this year that’s probably

The second question I’m asking is will you please work with Scotty Barnes but I think he would actually do it he is one of those players he believes in Scotty a lot I think he really is one of those guys who um he likes to give back and I think if

Um if someone wants to set that up somewhere putting it out in the universe make it happen I think Scotty would really benefit from it a lot um talking about greats Tim Grover one of the greatest um trainers of all time he talked a lot about how he broke down

Kobe’s game uh Michael Jordan’s game tape tracking their steps tracking you know which which foot they planted off of uh how many miles they ran every single game crazy stuff like that to train them how do you break down Scotty’s game is there some specific process that you have and is there

Something that you’ve learned over the last year that’s made you better at your job because I’ve always admired just how open-minded and creative you are so I’m big on mindset so I’m all all about with Scotty I just want Scotty to really believe in himself on the offens of

Because when he does he does he he makes so many great plays with the basketball that we just need him to be hyper aggressive trying to score the basketball so for instance like one week I’ll say I’ll send him all of his all of his makes in transition like every time

He was in transition I’ll just say you need to be more aggressive in transition nobody can stop you and then I might send him all of his ball screens where he’s making plays I was like you’re really good in the ball screen like just like that just to reiterate like how

Many how good you are in these instances and we need you to continue to be uh in these uh spaces um and throughout the season I just remind him um because he’s so uh he’s so good at so many different things I just remind him the things that he’s really

Good at and he needs to continue to get to those spots like a big thing is just creating mismatches you know getting that step up get into the get into the block and making someone come help help or you going to score over a little little guy so just uh reminding him the

Other day I told him about uh this game I was like bro you got to shoot one or two transition threes a game that’s going to help you like if you can if you can shoot and then and then he shot one you know what I mean so I’m like so just

Reminding him about the things just because A lot’s being thrown at him and I mean he watches film we watch film together so um he watches film and um but just reminding him you know what I mean how like how you’re successful in different instances and not to forget

About this spot or you know you probably you might have got a turn over there because you should have shot at that right now you know so I’m not like a overly bearing person but I just want him he’s figuring it out for himself and he’s going through so much but I just

Have like my way of just lightly reminding him who he is like I think he had a couple a rough stretch I just reminded him that he’s one of the best players in the world like don’t forget that and aware that [ __ ] you know like that’s just an attitude on how you even

How you walk how you lace your shoes up like you the like it’s not that many people who are the best at something in the entire world at 22 if he ever needs a little extra you know confidence little extra reminder of how good he is this guy me in 2007 anointed Kevin

Durant as one of the future greats I was so adamant that the p Blazers would regret it for the rest of their lives and for pretty much Katie’s entire career from Seattle to OKC to Golden State he was my favorite player he remained my favorite player until

Toron Scotty bares so basically that was the torch torch passing in my mind and I definitely did not like do that for a guy that I thought was going to be a role player I thought Scotty was going to be one of the all-time greats and I

See nothing but that in him and he can go for 50 we have his back cuz we know like I know that he’s going to be one of the best ever do it speaking of struggles he came out this season 39% shooting from three crazy he had a game

Where he had 15 three-pointers attempted people had to do a double take they were like what is there a screw up on ESPN’s box score he went seven for 15 in that game I infamously jinxed him last year with my stupid reel and I did it again I

Got to I got to make a video about his three-point shooting and and then that day it all ended he’s 29% since then and I’m so sorry again I will never talk about his three-point shooting again in a video what are you seeing different in January it’s not just his three-point

Shooting it’s his free throw shooting his free throw shooting is down to like 64 65% I think he had a really good game I think a couple games ago but like it’s below 70 he’s never been below 70 as an NBA player is it dead legs on offense is

It the emotional processing of losing so many teammates what what do you think it is I think this is the hardest part of the NBA season like we’re in like game like 40 to the allstar break that’s when it’s really like hard so I think that um of course it’s everybody’s tired you

Know what I mean it’s not just him everybody like around the league like you see a lot more 100 108 to 110 games now it’s not as many like 120 130 I mean last night the Jazz and freaking I think Clippers stupid but you see everything

Going a little bit down that’s just cuz guys are tired I think that’s part of it I think uh his role has changed so much where you know he was he was holding the corner a lot of the times uh when um Dennis and Pascal OG was there sometimes

He’s at the five sometimes you don’t get those same opportunities to float around the perimeter because you got four other perimeter guys on the team um and then I also think that uh defense are playing him a lot differently I think uh it’s all of those things and I think um as

His role changes like he may see fit that it may be you know more productive for him to you know force a switch or get on a block in so other guys can get shots and different things like that so it’s a culmination of all those things

So um he’ll he’ll get there but I think this is this just how the season is you know like it’s things are going to this is just the how n NBA season is like you’re going to have highs and lows and um I think this is just like not a low

This is just another challenge that he has to has to get through but I think that um we’re starting to see he’s coming out of it I think these three days offer is going to be good just cuz it’s tough to guard the other team’s

Best player and to run around and I mean like I told him like he’s like free safety like Ed Reed the way he’s like rotating on defense so um he had six blocks the other day so like he’s doing a lot and and you know I think when yach

Comes back that’ll relieve some of the banging like we saw it last year like me and you talked about it like a lot of like it’s hard to it’s hard to like continue to perform When You Gotta Be You Know banging with freaking 270 pound guys and different things like that so

He never complained about it right he just kept doing it because that’s that’s like that’s who he is because he knows he has to do it for his team um I know you’re running out of time really soon so I just want to get a couple questions

In um in terms of his pick and roll ball handling it’s gotten a hell of a lot better obviously if you’re going to be in initi year I told you bro I told you you don’t [ __ ] listen to me dog I listen to you it has gotten a lot better

This year like yo he’s got to work on his ball I’m like bro they just gotta put him in a in in the ball screen okay and then this year you also said oh do you think he’ll be able to handle the the uh the pressure on the ball I’m like

It’s not like they’re blitzing them they’re not blitzing them yet so all they got to do is switch so it’s easy fair you and then you see like middle ball screen he’s always snaking to the weak side hitting yaka in the pocket like it’s crazy he he presents a ton of advantages

As a pick and roll ball handler I mean he can flip it he can also be the screener in that I get it it’s it’s it’s it’s something that all NBA teams run two things number one what advantages does he have over say a guy like a smaller guard more prototypical

Initiator and see he can see every spot on the floor that that’s it he can he can see every he can he can and he can make the play like a lot of it is can you make this play he can make the play to the weak side corner or he can make

To the the play to the guy uh shaking up to the weak side corner if that presents himself he can also even it wouldn’t drop coverages bro he he put so much pressure on the on the opposing big that that’s why Yak was getting those pocket

Passes because Yak on a guard is like a mismatch you know what I mean so yeah when and and now that you’re seeing that the floor is spread a little bit better um now and you have a weak side cutter you have some guys you got Gary and and

Emanu on the floor that like now when yach comes back and it’s yak and Scotty in in the ball handling and now you have a cutter and then you have two like really good shooters then now you’re going to really see it open up because

It’s so much space on the floor do you not agree that he needs to get a little bit lower on his dribble like okay okay so I saw him attack okay Trac McGrady is uncommon as hell but you also got to remember that Tracy McGrady was able to

Get to where he could because off his left hand it was Cash like 50% hesy pull so that like Scotty’s not shooting as many off the dribble threes yet so like I I agree with you 100% he’s got to get lower and that’s like that’s a

Uh a weight room thing that it’s going to continue to progress that he’s going to get strong and able to sit down but once he starts shooting dri like threes off the dribble like he can get to wherever he is and that’s what the next

Step is so getting lower in the in the stance is like I mean like the I think the ball comes up too high when he’s dribbling that’s what we mean because because like I saw him attack a center uh I’m who am I thinking about and he

Poked it away and I’m like that can’t happen because it’s just like you’re so large right it’s just the physics of it you’re 6’8 6’9 if you got the ball super high there’s just way too much space and that might be you know why Darko has mentioned at times like that he’s

Worried about him being the only ball handler on the court even though we have seen fantastic results with him being the only ball handler on court even when he was a rookie but I understand you know the concern of like he needs to just get a little bit um tighter it’s

Not even it’s not even lower it’s tighter like you see Ben Simmons handling the basketball it’s it’s just it’s closer to his body and that that to manipulate but you also see Kevin Durant having a ball way out here too though long arms but still like do you want a Ben

Simmons type ball handler do you want a a Kevin Durant type ball that is actually a worthwhile question bro because because I’ll tell you right now benon is a freaking great ball handler but he’s not doing anything to create an advantage for himself he’s just going straight line drive this way

Straight line drive that way right he’s not driving the score he’s not going to score yeah I see what you’re saying so so you’re saying like The Wider you are the higher you are the more you can manipulate space yeah you can get more wiggle and if you’re like if you’re so

Low it may be hard to get into your shot too all right I got I agree I agree 100% that he does need to play a little bit lower and I think that was a big thing that he needed to do with the shot to engage his legs a little bit more and

Stay on balance but and I but I think that it’s going to happen but I think if he does that Iverson pull next year I’m I’m I’m buying you dinner man like it’s just like do it what what do you have planned for the rest of the year I I

Love the fact that you guys work throughout the year you’re clearly in Toronto right now enjoying the snow here not a big deal for you you played in Boston no you don’t care about the snow here firmly on the record I think they can make the play in the East is soft I

Think that I would love to see them face off against Indiana in the playin whether he makes All-Star team not Allstar team what are you what’s what’s on the dock what’s on the bucket list for like the next 39 games we got to fix this this this I think we just got to

Keep them in a good Rhythm um but we also have to monitor how much we’re working extra because his body is taking a bigger toll than what it has in previous years and we don’t want to exhaust them which would you know what I mean that’s when you start getting

Injuries and different things like that so I think we have to monitor like how much we work the duration of the time the duration of the time that we spend in the gym um but we still got to keep them in the Rhythm I think that’s something that I’m able to do really

Well is when I when I’m here like everything feels good like as far as his ball healing and shooting Everything feels good and he’s in a much better Rhythm um so just just keep him in the in the Rhythm and keep him focused on the day-to-day on the day-to-day work

And just to understand that we’re just learning and trying to learn as much as we can and gather information and just continue to get better you know we gota we got to get to the playoffs because I think the the the experience that these guys will will gain being young a young

Team in the playoffs it it’ll will continue to just speed up you know the timeline because I don’t think nobody ever thought that we he would be who he is right now um I mean like not I mean you didn’t even think that he would have this kind of

Year that he he he’s having I thought he would be 20 but I didn’t I didn’t see dude I’m I did not see six box Plus finus at all he has recently gone down to 4.5 I could have seen four you got to explain to me box plus minus because I

Googled it and it’s very hard for me to understand I we’ll talk about it for sure we will value of replacement is like the stat that people use to gauge who’s the MVP in the league Michael Jordan LED it year after year he’s top

10 top 10 tell him that tell him he’s a top 10 player he is a top 10 guy and he should never ever lose confidence in that jump shot I’ve noticed a few times you know come out he takes a couple threes if he misses one it’s going to be

A less volumous three-point shooting night he just needs to trusted he’s really great I am amazed you’re right you’re right I thought he’d get there someday I didn’t see I didn’t see it this soon I’m super proud of both of you for the work that you’re doing I’m super

Proud of him let him know this channel loves him and we will continue to support him forever and ever and ever where can people find you what do you want to plug is there is there something that uh that you’re currently working on that you would like um our audience to

Know about our audience of course loves you everyone’s been asking me for weeks and weeks when is Brian coming on so let them know N I don’t have anything to plug uh my Instagram is B ma Fisher um I’m G to try uh eventually I’m going to start trying to do some

The the openness and the honesty I think your your uh your temperament is a lot better this year we like you and that could that could be a metric that shows why your channel is growing so much this year because your temperament is it’s easier for me because you know this

Media space is not tearing down my favorite player and and you know talking [ __ ] about him all day um it’s also Al easier for me that now some of the trads that I’ve been wanting for a year and a half to two years to happen have finally

Happened so I’m in a better place but also yes spiritual growth is a great thing meditate like you know um yeah I appreciate you thank you so much for always supporting thanks for the super chats you come in into our lives once in a while and you drop a

Scottie Barnes ‘ trainer Brian Macon sits with Pensare Basketball to discuss Scottie’s insane offseason, the Toronto Raptors, the Knicks trade that brought Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett to Toronto, and how hard work, commitment, and dedication led to Scottie becoming one of the 2-3 most improved players in the NBA following a year where his game, his commitment, maturity and work ethic were widely called into question.

We talked about the pressures of becoming a franchise player, losing OG Anunoby, and how Scottie Barnes has a LONG way to go before he becomes the type of player Brian envisions in his prime.

  1. I think Youtube demonitized this due to a totally legal use of a song they're flagging for some reason. Sucks. But thats okay 😢. Plz like and share. It would be super appreciated.

  2. What do you think about the raptors going after saric? Golden state might be willing to move him

  3. Ehhhh so amped this is up. Great job Rob. This is one of the many reasons why the "haters" and trolls always be dropping in on the lives, but they ain't changing shit. The grind don't stop. Stay true.

  4. God damn bro. Your film background is so evident. Anyone can film a chat and upload it, but these always have that extra flare to them. The music, the editing. Exquisite 👌
