I cross-posted this to the Nets subreddit to get their take. (Garland and Levert were thrown in for salary matching purposes). Why the Cavs Do It
* Short term, they appear to be better without Mobley * Bridges’ defensive ability gives them another perimeter defender to overcome Mitchell’s shortcomings * With Bridges and O’Neal, they believe they have a chance to make a run this year (with the ability to flip Bridges in the future if Mitchell indicates he wants to leave) * They may have a better chance at retaining Donovan Mitchell with Bridges in tow
Why the Cavs Don’t Do It
* Too early to move on from someone with Mobley’s potential at such a young age * Going all-in on this season is unlikely to catapult Cleveland into the upper echelon of contenders * If Mitchell departs, Cleveland likely has to do a reset and doesn’t have a building block like Mobley to pair with Garland
Why the Nets Do It
* Gives the Nets a bonafide building block on a longer timeline than Bridges * Mobley (upon return from injury) can also contribute immediately, important given how the team is in flux on direction without its picks * Positionally Mobley also allows the Nets to move Dorian Finney Smith for additional assets and could be a great fit next to Claxton for rim protection
Why the Nets Don’t Do It
* Mobley has not shown the growth expected of a prospect of his caliber * Mobley’s offensive game is still quite limited, and he’d be added to a roster that includes Ben Simmons (oy) and Nic Claxton. * Moving on from Bridges removes one of the selling points the Nets have tried to point to as “the next destination for a disgruntled star.”
Ultimately, I wouldn’t do this if I was the Cavs but I’m curious to get others’ temperature.

Mikal Bridges is really nothing special. I’ve watched a lot of Suns games over the years, and this guy straight up disappears in the playoffs. No way I would ever make this trade.

Why are you people doing this? Stop. We are not trading Mobley.
