Erik Spoelstra on Miami Heat’s 7-Game Losing Streak

Erik Spoelstra on Miami Heat’s 7-Game Losing Streak

It’s uh it’s obviously not about the starting group but do you want to give that unit more time yeah right now this is uh about U you know our house we we have got to get our our structure right um and live up to our standards that we’ve set for

Ourselves at the beginning of the year um we’re not doing that uh recent uh time and we’re fully aware of that U but we have a group that’s very committed to you know to getting this going back on on the right track as frustrating as this is for everybody everybody’s

Extremely frustrated angry uh you know despondent a bunch of uh emotions that you’re naturally going to feel if you’re a competitor uh and and we’re not winning games um and we’re focusing on on that stuff right now it’s been a painful step or two backwards uh and we’re just going to

Keep on working until we get those uh those positive steps forward um collectively um and and we’ll get there you know I know I I keep saying that uh but I know our group uh I know uh what our group’s intentions are uh sometime this this Le sometimes this league can be so

Humbling um and you have to embrace uh everything that comes with it including we’ve we’ve had Great Moments uh and sometimes you’re going to have moments you know like this and and we just have to figure figure things out together we’re the only people that can help ourselves are

The ones in the lock coach I noce racist having that chip on their shoulder looking after seventh straight loss in today’s practice what did you see from them uh that’s for uh me to to notice it really doesn’t matter you know what everybody else sees we we are aware of

What the perception is about our team on the outside um we only care about uh the people in our lock room and the solutions we need uh to do to to get this thing back on track are there any main solutions to get to the other side

Or any one thing you’re main thing you’re yeah our our Collective resolve for sure that’ll that’ll handle some things um may know defensively uh and just overall terms of um that that toughness um mental physical emotional competive with toughness that that really those intangibles can can check a lot of boxes

You know but the schematics are are second third fourth fifth beyond Behind that how do you develop that I mean that is part of the theme here every year obviously how do you sometimes it it happens faster or easier than other Seasons it doesn’t matter like this is

Our reality this is where we are right now we dropped seven straight uh we we don’t feel good about our our position so the only thing that matters right now is what are we going to do about it that’s it uh and that’s what we worked on today as finding collecting solutions

That really are none of your business and I say that respectfully uh it’s not it’s not anyone else’s business what we’re trying to do we know you guys it’s fine to understand that we’re trying to get to a point where we can win games and and that’s

How humbling this league can be but I also feel that that’s the clarity sometimes when you’re just in the present moment and doing whatever you have to do to try to to get a win in your next game um and that’s that’s what we uh address today SC as as a coach I

Much says that he do that maybe you’re trying to find that answer and this is something that hasn’t happened in a while yeah if you’re in this business long enough you’re going to experience a lot of different things and that’s why I think it’s it’s not healthy to compare

It to other Seasons this is our reality right now that’s it we’re uh game above 500 we are wherever we are in the East we’ve lost seven straight so we’re addressing our reality right now what do we need to do to get our house uh in order um to be

Able to put ourselves in a better position you know to win the next game you seem from what you said it seems like more of an attitude thing then like you said schematics is schematics but is it an attitude thing yeah it’s a a collective deal and that’s that’s what we’ve been

Focusing on Eric the decision to go without practice today means Terry still has not had a full practice I know you’ve had working shootarounds and other things like that how do you balance a busy schedule of four and six days Terry arriving last Wednesday and not having that full whether it’s Hunger

Games pads on practice I think that’s a little bit semantics I I think our our day was productive very productive today we needed to do uh address what we needed to today and and what we did address really is none of guys business we just are preparing uh to be ready uh

To be a better version of ourselves has he had a chance to fully acclimate here he’s getting there is it going to be perfect you know just a weekend no that’s that’s not realistic but yeah he’s he’s making progress and when you made this trade and and you looked at

The possibilities do did you see and do you still see a fit with him and Tyler offensively and defensively playing together as the starting back court yes I do and and with maybe questions about defensively just they’re maybe not viewed as ultimately plus Defenders is that something you now have to work

Around or work through when going with that type I think we have uh enough where our guys all can be plus Defenders uh in our system uh including those two they they bring great speed and quickness uh at their positions um and as we know building a

Team defense it requires all five guys being on the same page on a string uh reacting uh intuitively really instinctively off of each other um you know we haven’t been good with that uh recently Tyler talked about being more of a catch and shoot guy after the game last night how have you

Seen him sort of acclimate to that role over these last few games yeah I I think he’s due I think couple of these games with a shot profile I think he’s due for an eight nine three-point game but that’s how ignitable he is but I don’t really want to focus on

You know that that that’s like on our list of priorities you know we have other things to to take care of um and I think once we take care of these other things then all of a sudden the basket becomes a lot bigger um and those shots

I I think are in the right wheelhouse uh and it can be ignitable that that very easily can be an age for 12 night when the issues are less about exes the nose and more about intangibles how do you go about addressing that as a coach yeah

You work on it you don’t brush anything under the rug you just you roll your sleeves and you get to work together everybody has to have pure intentions about it which our our group does uh and I think these are great opportunities for growth uh everybody knows it these are

Cliches you grow more you have so much more gratification when you have adversity and you overcome it and and it’s a whole lot easier to talk about it or say it and say yeah we’ll definitely get better but not have the adversity because it’s more comfortable uh or you go through it you

Go through the sometimes it’s not easy and sometimes it’s really uncomfortable and painful that’s where we are right now that’s our reality uh but I know when a locker room is addressing it the right way and and our group is and that has the potential for a great growth opportunity from this

Adversity from this pain all right thank you

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra talks about the team’s seven-game win streak, how they can turn their season around, the Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier backcourt and Herro being a “catch-and-shoot” guy.

  1. stop playing the free flow offence ,some of the heat player are playing for renewal of their contract they dont care if you lose ,

  2. They are going to regret trading Lowry as all he does is win. You can compare his wins to any other point guard and Lowry has won the most number of games the past 10 years, only second behind Golden State. Lowry goes through shooting slumps but only wins..Philadelphia will take him and he will contribute to winning the title this year…He especially shows up in big games….Remember the play in against Atlanta last year? Everyone else was struggling and Lowry scored 37 even thought the Heat lost that game

  3. Every time i see Tyler in that starting lineup am angry spo as long as u continue to make that happen no playoffs for this team and if we do make it early exit

  4. Well, I am not worried about the Heat. They've proven and tested time and again during the playoffs that they outperforms everybody. The good news is, they have more reliable players this year than last year.

  5. I don't expect a turnaround until the trade deadline. I guess multiple guys feel they can be moved and their heads aren't in the right place. And Spo doesn't know who he can plan with long term, thats why he isn't finding solutions right now.

  6. The issue that I am seeing is the coach's play system are so basic and predictable. Every teams are improving a lot but this team headed by this coach who has been employing basic play only, he can't see it.

  7. Make Tyler Herro great again and that’s by making him a 6th man where he won the award and we got the #1 seed in the east that year.

  8. One thing is..Team chemistry is messed up cuz of the trade deadline, guys feel in limbo. Same thing happened last year the team was in a funk just before the trade deadline.

  9. Height is a big problem but they proven too beat that with effort and communication and knowing where everybody is supposed to be and who to get of defense and right now all those things seem to be out the door no effort no communication not knowing where you’re player is on defense so as much as I wanna put this on the players it’s coach spos responsibility to get everybody together

  11. Miami Heat front Office should do the following ASAP; A) Get a Legitimate Center who can shoot the three, score efficiently and defend – someone like N. Vucevic or M. Turner. B) Get a Legitimate PG who can penetrate the paint, shoot the three and who can defend decently – someone like D. Murrray. C) Because of their impending contract extension – They should release Tyler Herro and Caleb Martin. D) Front Office should release T, Bryant. E) Get Patrick Stewart, Obi Toppin or the Wagner Brothers. F) They should release K. Love. Coach Spo should stop playing Bam as a Center, he is a power forward. Why can't the team defend against opposing 3 point shooters? Miami Heat's defense is atrocious and it lacks the intensity and cohesiveness. Front Office has already missed out on Siakam, Anunoby, Achiuwa, John Collins, Obi Toppin and Shoreder and it is not a good thing. What’s up with Orlando Robinson, Jamal Cain, RJ Hampton and N. Jovic? Front Office should trade for quality players before the Feb deadline. And I just would like to mention that small ball only works on certain teams – but not against the top 4 or top 5 East or West contending teams. Miami Heat was lucky to win 1 game against the Nuggets because of D. Robinson, but you can clearly see the disparity in size – the Heat were too small. Maybe if they were able to close out game 4 against the Celtics, probably they might have a chance. And lastly, once again if the Heat Front office does not get quality players ASAP and improve on their defense, they might be probably be the # 8th or # 10th seed in the east after the regular season, or they might miss the playoffs. I hope I am not misunderstood, I am a bonifide Miami Heat Fan since the Pat Riley days, I am just being realistic.

  12. Jimmy has to play the point guard spot let Terry attack
Make Tyler come off the bench 6 man and josh Richardson play PG second unit with him josh Richardson is an ex factor I’m telling you and he plays defense and hits big 3s if you look at the film when we were winning
