Doc Rivers reacts after loss to Nuggets in first game as head coach

Two bad turnovers if you remember one um we didn’t get the ball inbounds to the right guy and and the broken play and the second one Chris had a it was the right decision uh they just got their hands on it we had a guy wide open on a

Right up so I wasn’t I was fine with that I didn’t think overall like uh I told our guys anyone who told you you couldn’t play defense lie uh you proved that tonight uh you competed tonight and you know they got 15 points of of our

Turnovers if you take that away our half court defense was excellent and we fought tonight um I thought tonight was an offensive loss like I didn’t I didn’t think we were um Cris offensively we had stretches where the ball was humming and hopping and then we had stretches where

It didn’t uh and that’s those stretches we have to clean up but overall I was very happy I I think 19 points in the third quarter 11 turnovers I think in the quarter um just what did you see that led to that same thing um you know

When the ball stuck um and we didn’t space right uh it led to bad stuff you know I did think that I thought in the first half the second group were got crushed and then in the second half our second group crushed theirs and you know we talked about it at halftime uh

Campaign you know he’s not done this before but we told him you’re picking the ball Up full court I thought that changed the game for us it it really did now he was exhausted and and this may be the worst place to tell someone you have

To pick the ball Up full court um but uh and same thing with bees like bees didn’t help us a lot offensively he didn’t get a lot good shots but he fought defensively so the fight is there um that some really encouraging moving forward you mentioned second unit you

Changed rotations a little bit second so I guess what went into your plan there to sort of things yeah I didn’t like in the first half when we had Dam man Yannis off the floor uh I thought thought that’s when they made their little run I know we’ve been doing that

I think you can get away with that against some teams but you can’t do that against a good team um and so we switched it uh in the second half but even at the start of the game like Dame this is the first time he hasn’t played

A full first quarter yeah yeah was that altitude in Denver or was that something you were no that was something we talked about uh we talked about it my first day um you know I really want Dame and Giannis to be in when we get into pill

Uh but I don’t want Dame to be tired when we get in the penalty so our our plan is to take them out and bring them both back in so they can end quarters you said that you felt like this was an offense loss what type of adjustments do

You tell your team to make when it is going that way not much just move the ball trust each other um the trust you know it goes in and out it’s it’s in the flux you know what’s funny it’s it’s what I saw from afar uh it it was really

Interesting I this is exactly what I saw from TV you know uh sitting on the couch and uh the good news there you know is very fixable because you have guys that want to get it right so um listen Dam and Yannis have played 40 games together

In their life you know uh Joker and and and Murray have played you know and if you looked at the game tonight down the stretch they had it going our guys couldn’t get it going and that was the difference you know um I told our guys like today we’re going to spend longer

Shoot rounds uh we have to catch up to that you know you’re never going to catch up to that but you can get it better and we’re going to have to do it through practice what did you like about your defense tonight just we had fight

Um you know we we scrambled well uh loved our switching down the stretch getting um you know scramming Dame out a lot um I thought Dame fought like so you know the cats out of the B they all Prov they can do it so so now we have to do

It every night is there any uh getting this first game getting started like I don’t know releas the right word but they just have you to kind of like started yeah I’m happy we we’re going you know I you know I just know for a while it’s going to be a tough like

Especially offensive calls you know I had to turn uh to Joe and DJ a lot because uh me and Y you know bet three what’s that play where where Bobby you know um that it’s going to take a minute uh um I mean I I bet I’ve watched our

Offense 50 times over the last two days yet you still just going to take time to have the right Rhythm to make the right calls we scored a lot out of atos um I wish we could have you know that was made my stuff but I wanted to

Score I’d rather score off what we run because they know the second and third options of those the defensive I guess alignment with Joker to make him work looked a little bit like last year at least the way it’s did you pull from that especially the

Way with Brooke and and then using Bobby and some doubles yeah Brook and Bobby double uh uh Yannis uh guarding him uh Hur us when he picked that fourth foul up that was cuz we were about to go to him guarding we were actually going to

Go small um Yannis only big would would Brook you know make Joker would have to guard him in transition but then he picks up his fourth file so sometimes you have plans and you just they don’t work how did you feel like your guys responded to your coaching tonight oh

They’re great they’re they’re very coachable team they’re they’re adults you know this is not uh this team is so far I mean uh but they are they’re very coachable uh that that will never that won’t be a problem with this group um y’s taking 25 shots to get 25 points

Yeah is that kind of like the perfect that’s exactly what we need like he had to fight for his points tonight uh difficult points uh but he’s still really good you know um but when he takes 25 shots it means a couple things number one he couldn’t find guys the way

He wanted to um and then number two that means he had to force a lot of tough shots that’s what our defense has to [Applause] be

  1. Reporter: "Hey Doc, do you think you can still be a head coach for a championship team like the one you guys want to become?"
Doc: "Yeah, I don't know that question or the answer to that right now… ummm… you know, so I don't know the answer to that".

  2. Milwaukee fans feeling any kind of hope with this guy.

    I almost feel sympathy.

Spoiler Alert: It is never going to be his fault when things go south. Be ready for it.

  3. Funny that the Bucks organization thinks that Doc is the answer. They will see real soon how trash he is as a coach. He showed flashes already tonight. Man had Malik Beasley in at closing time guarding Jamal Murray smh. That cost us a quick 6 points in 3 straight possessions, and had Middleton and Lopez running pick and roll late game with Dame and Giannis watching.

  4. We need more versatile reliable players to lead the bench play of this team. Start with playing Beauchamp and Jackson Jr. Figure something out that involves at least one of them. Bobby is a great player to have but I don't feel comfortable with him tied for second most shots in tight games like this to be honest. I can't see the vision of us going far with his unidimensional isolation offense being that significant of a feature. We score much many games because of our team's different talents but our team's offensive foundation is not as selfless, cohesive, multifaceted and unpredictable as I'd like. For how much impact and minutes Bobby plays with games like this are scary. I really would like to see someone else develop into that sixth man role for this team just my two cents.

  5. It’s a really tough job for a coach to take over mid-season, particularly one who wasn’t already on the coaching staff. New system, terminology, communication.

  6. He did a solid job. Beasley and Portis were a combined 4/22 that’s a game killer. But can someone explain to me why on earth is Beasley starting over Jae? Jae’s been shooting solid before the injury and is a better defender than Beasley.

  7. Tough matchup for a HC on a new team, tough matchup, just goes to show, coaches matter, no matter how many hall of famers you have (3). I think Middleton will make it.

  8. And let the excuses comes in 😂😂
Giannis and the bucks are morons thinking they can be right and everyone wrong

  9. Idk why most of y’all talking shit about doc when he’s not the one missing shots. The bucks defense was better and there was a little more movement with the ball they just weren’t knocking down shots and another thing Philly fans got nerve talking shit about doc when embiid is the one who always out the post season after he got a boo boo along with James harden and Ben Simmons inconsistency.

  10. All this coach is good at is making excuses! I’ve been saying it all along they should have just kept the coach they had!

  11. What amazes me is the frustration I see from guys like brook and Middleton when dame decides to attack and score you can just see the body language, To be fair though dame didn’t have Milwaukee on his list anyway I predict he’s out of there end of this contract

  12. I've never seen a team gets so much out of one championship it's ridiculous almost comical. Kevin Garnett Paul Pierce and doc Rivers a treated like NBA royalty. And they were average ,please they have milked this championship to death.

  13. Lol Nuggets shot 4/18 from 3….. and STILLLLL won 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  14. Doc need to tell Giannis that he is the best but in these big games he need to pass to his teammates. Giannis alone can't win the game and he sometime force the play, not good. The Nuggets let everyone play and shoot and they won.

  15. Milwaukee Buck had 3 strikes out.
First strike: They fired the coach that won a championship.
Second strike: They traded the best defender of the team.
Third strike: The hired a coach that never gets the job done in the playoffs.

  16. Doc and the Bucks is gonna be fine in the regular season. The playoffs? That's the million dollar question 😂

  17. This game was lost by a few careless live turnovers in the 3rd quarter. Thats where denver got a little separation. That caused the bucks to be held to 19 points in the 3rd quarter.

  18. so… it was not a head coach problem though. Dame is "lost in translation" kind of. Was he introduced to his teammates??

  19. The bigger problem with the Bucks is the lack of respect they got last night from the fools in Denver. Jokić laughing at Giannis during his free throws and the tv commentators clowning you with a stop watch live on tv. If the Buck are gonna do anything, Giannis has to take over the team the way he did after going down 2-0 to the Suns in the finals. When his numbers were comparable to Shaq. Its not the coach. Its up to your best players to not let you lose. Stop playing soft.
