POSTGAME REACTION: Orlando Magic at San Antonio Spurs, 1/31/24
Hey Paulo so San Antonio they went on that run late in the fourth but what did this team do to execute and come together in that assertive unit to get the job done yeah you know we just had to come together uh obviously you don’t
Want to give up a run like that that’s two games now where we’ve done that so we learned from the from from the Dallas game and uh didn’t want to let him you know get the lead and I think we just did a good job staying poised uh getting
Stops and then being smart on offense end 25 points seven rebounds seven assists just talk about the zone you were in to just really execute your shots out here tonight yeah I just wanted to pick my spots um play the game the right way and uh yeah just a another
Game I’m glad we got the win a good night for your teammate fron as well talk about the impact he makes on this court yeah it’s it’s on and off the court you know just his presence with the team um you know we have full trust
In him he’s like a common presence for the team you know he’s a super smart guy um knows where everybody’s supposed to be and on top of that you know he’s a great player so just having him out there you know it’s a it’s great for for
Everybody and uh you know he’s getting back in Rhythm and he’s going to keep you know turning up we know your mom’s here with some of her old uh teammates as well you think she’s proud of your performance in this one yeah yeah I got a couple dunks for her tonight couple uh
Paint finishes that’s really what she want to see she can care less about the jumper so uh yeah I think she was happy with it and she’s here for a big moment for tomorrow because the All-Star reserves named will be announced how much would it mean to you if you heard
Your name announced tomorrow yeah it would be huge it would be huge um I can’t even you know I can’t see and downplay it man it would be a big thing for me um just a goal I’ve always had and it’ be a dream come true all right
Thanks Paulo congrats on the win guys what do you see from your team down the stretch defensively forcing those turnovers to kind of keep San Antonio up in well I think that third quarter was a better version of us um I think the way we were able to get into the basketball
Defend the right way do it without fouling um but that was that was very good on our aggression part turning them over uh but again I think just continuing to grow and learn that we’ve got to continue to play for 48 minutes of a game Jonathan Isaac’s defense on
Web SE pretty stellar all night what did you see I thought he was great I thought he read his timing well uh got into his body tried to be as physical as possible without you know disrupting too much and fouling uh I think the timing was good
On some of the shot blocks but again Victor is a unbelievable player uh and I think you know just continued growth uh is going to be great for him kick the tripod you um we talked about playing down the stretch in close games and a
Lot of times it’s maybe not gone the way you want it but it seemed like tonight you guys were a little more resilient Poise even when San Antonio called back did you kind of sense that from your team well just knowing that you know it’s a 48 minute game our guys have to
Continue we’ll continue to understand that uh knowing no team is just going to lay down uh we have to make sure that we continue to do the right things throughout the game whether you’re up 20 whether you’re down 10 whatever it looks like you have to play your style of
Basketball and our style of basketball Jamal how did pow play tonight and how did it fit into what he’s brought to your team so far this year again I think he played at an All-Star level I I think he was willing to take on defensive challenges um offensively trying to make
The right play getting guys involved uh finding the right pass as they started to switch going for mismatches On the Block but then looking to spray it out for guys to for knockdown shots or looking for Cutters so I think he played a allar around solid
Game what do you think it would would it mean anything to him in terms of his development to to be named an All-Star does it would something like that not impact his I I think it does I I think it means a lot for for a young man who
Continues to strive and continues to grow and wants to be great um I think being you know being named one of the greats among your peers uh says a ton you know as building confidence knowing that you and who you are in this league Al I recently mentioned that it
Frustrates him getting doubled nightly um how do you believe he’s executed again against aggressive blitzes and double teams I think he’s done a great job and I think double team and blitzes are the ultimate form of respect right that that they have to put two people on
You to stop you from doing and creating for your teammates so the the the his ability to keep creating for his teammates even even in the midst of not being able to get certain Touches at certain times and disrupting Rhythm but that’s what great play players do they
They make their teammates better uh regardless of the circumstances hey coach sen you made that big seem like your guys still pretty calm in the last few minutes and kind of able to make some nice de cuts of stops he talk about just their calmness it’s it’s it’s
All about growth for this group we continue to have to go through these experiences uh to help us understand that it’s a 48 minute game uh we were obviously on the other end of this in the Dallas game so you can reflect right away and understand like teams are going
To go on runs just like we went on a run against them but we got to keep our po no matter what happens we have to go back to doing what we do do to get that lead uh and stay the same wasama as impressive in person as he’s
Been on TV in in summer league more so what did you see from him uh his timing his feel um and again it’s just as he’s as the game is going on you can just see that he’s just being patient trying to see what’s happening within the game uh
He doesn’t Force things he’s not rushing things he’s playing the right way trying to find teammates uh he run they run a ton of actions for him but he’s looking also to facilitate so I think he’s just you know his length at The Rim blocking shots again he does so many things uh
That you know you just very very impressive at a high high level you guys utilize Isaac as a screener in sta set to close the first half um how uh big is it having a guy that being so dominant on both sides of the FL I think it’s
It’s something that we you see and know our coaches did a great job of calling out certain actions that can put them in a diff a difficult bind defensively so again whether it’s Jonathan Isaac or it’s Wendell or it’s Mo or it’s Goa whatever situation we find you’re going
To put him in there just because we know it pulls Wim wimy away from the rim uh and it gets us allowed us to get downhill a little bit and then if on that screen you can also hit the hit the man that sets the back screen for a wide
Open shot so just being able to manipulate the defense is what we you know we try to do thank you thank you guys appreciate you guys thank you um yeah I think solid pors we got a couple stops um I just kind of slowed down on offense got some good shots and
Um you just kind of f back to how we were playing before a little bit you guys have played so many close games on the road that have come down to the wire do you feel like maybe that recent experience helped you guys stay composed stay poised when the game got tight yeah
Maybe but we got to be we got to be better um end of the third start of the fourth um know it’s fine to have a couple lapses here and there but we got to have we got to make sure that we keep those stretches a little shorter um this the
Second game in a row where we had this now so we got to be better you know how impressive ji is defensively uh what did you see from him guarding Victor W yeah super impressive I mean it’s not just what he does on the bards really the impact on the whole possession um
Know when when other guys are getting back cut or um you know there as a Mis coverage or something like that he uh yeah with with his ability um just a impact shots I think he um he makes makes a lot of mistakes don’t look like mistakes anymore so um I think that
That’s way greater to impact cuz it cuz it’s every possession not just when he’s on the ball how did you size up your night tonight how you played uh way too many turnovers um other than that I thought I did a solid job of getting in the paint and
You know try to just make the right play um but like I said I think I had 304 where you know I was rushed a little bit and um just gave the other team the ball so I got to be better what uh in terms of growth what
Have you seen from poo this year because you went through something like this last year going from I mean um was playing great um I think his Poise his his confidence um that he has I think that um everybody else is picking up on that and it has an
Impact on on the whole group so um I think that’s that’s his way of of of leading the team and um I mean I can talk about the basketball stuff all day but I think that’s that’s the most impressive stuff what was what are your impressions of when been young unbelievable
Um I I I think it’s I mean I know as a rookie it’s it’s tough to like get used to the to the game and the physicality and stuff and for him to have such an impact so early um it’s going to be tough to play against him for a bunch of
Years y anything else thank you we’re grateful thank you thank you app
