Chris Finch talks about bad shot selection in loss to Magic
Chris it felt like in the fourth quarter the team just kind of started making poor decisions and couldn’t hit a shot how did you see them kind of communicating or what was happening in the quarter yeah I mean uh definitely um shot selection was poor for the most
Part uh just overall execution was poor uh just struggled to get into our sets they did a good job with their physicality their ball pressure and we didn’t really do a good job of battling back on that front um and then uh you know and it led to U transition buckets
Right and kind of crummy defense after that so Chris when you look at I mean 38 in the first 21 in the second 29 and then 18 like why do you think it’s fluctuating so much between quarter to quarter there yeah I mean that’s been a
Little bit of our problem um recently I thought we got some good looks you know in the fourth that didn’t go down U by that time you know certainly we needed him but um you know we look at the tape I think uh you know just it’s shot
Selection no doubt it’s just shot selection we don’t get anything easy we don’t get out and run like we should even after makes uh even after misses or turnovers you know in transition we’ve been really poor converting in the last couple games you know we had a charge by
Jaden we had Kyle throw the ball out of bounds to a cat cutting um you know those are points that you absolutely have to have and um you know that they account for you know some of the not getting those are accounting for these these low totals
So when you see an in kind of hero mode or like how do you try to get him to move the ball and we called some movement sets you know um you know I just thought the hesitation would to go downhill was there I thought he had a
Guy in space several times in the fourth quarter and he just held um and he should you know had opportunities to go off the catch and in space but uh you know he called over a pick and roll and that and kind of jammed us up so um yeah
I thought uh just like hesitancy there just holding holding holding so a ton of teams uh typically double cat in the post tonight Orlando used Jonathan Isaac to just play him one-on-one a lot of the time how did that impact your guys’ offensive attack down the stretch I mean
Uh well we had a great postfeed pass and cut uh Jaden got it back should have finished it tried to throw an interior pass it was turn over um you know uh but uh yeah maybe should have gone into the post more often down the stretch I’m not
Sure so was the plan to foul earlier in that no the plan wasn’t to foul at all the plan was just to get a stop you know so I got confidence in the defense and um somewhere there’s Mis communication that thought we should have filed so they went bigger in in the fourth
Quarter uh took fols out and they had Isaac in there do you think a bigger more physical group against you can lead to some of these execution issues or do you see I think so yeah I mean I think their physicality definitely bothered us
You know uh I wish we were a little bit more physical back um rather than always react into the physicality it seems like in the fourth quarters when you guys bogg down there’s an impatience I mean you don’t make more than one yeah maybe two passes but
There’s no three pass positions or yeah I mean is that I I don’t know how you you know get out of that I mean sometimes the shots are relatively open but yeah there could be a better shot pretty quickly after that yeah it’s just again too much holding not coming off
The action to turn corner to put pressure on the defense which commits the defense to make the right play we come off the action um looking for the all too often the iso or the switch or something like that so so Jaden had the foul a had the technical in a tie game
With and um it’s not the first time they’ve had kind of issues like that in the fourth quarter of a game when when you’re trying to get these guys to play you know a mature level of basketball how how much do you dwell on stuff like
This and try to stamp it out it it’s definitely uh you know major teaching points you know for sure we can’t can’t keep making these these mistakes you know um they just can’t you know these guys gotta they got to rise the occasion they got to put that stuff behind them and you
Know we’re going to play you know a lot of high intensity games and close games and they got to keep their composure so say how when you’re a young when you’re young players in the league like that how it’s it’s kind of easy to to say you
Can’t do this but how long does it take them to put it into practice typically I mean that’s a question I think for them I mean everyone’s been a little bit different I mean it’s you know I think right now um uh you know we talked about
The technical with Anthony the other day um you know and he’s just got to you know he’s going to be he’s a he’s a player who puts a lot of pressure on the basket he’s going to get hit sometimes the referees aren’t always going to call
It he’s got to mature he’s got to get through that you know how long that takes I don’t know so coach do you feel like they took the tempo away from you you seem to have control of it early yeah I thought we doing a good job
Moving the ball really kind of carving him up making the extra pass you know I should have played JM in the second half that’s that’s on me um you know he’s always a catalyst for ball movement um you know but um we just stopped doing [Applause] that
