> The Bucks and Mavericks, league sources say, have held exploratory discussions on a trade that would swap Milwaukee’s Bobby Portis Jr. and Dallas newcomer Grant Williams.

> It is not yet known if the talks will progress to something more serious.

> Williams’ first season in Dallas has been undeniably disappointing, but his ability to guard a wide variety of players is said to intrigue Milwaukee, which is known to be searching for defensive upgrades.

I’ve seen Grant Williams play competent defense, I’m in

  2. Skeleboi846

Grant has shown he can light people up from 3, and he’s as solid as you could hope as a wing defender and a very serviceable defender against competent big men. Think this is a no brainer move if it can be done

  3. Superflissbro

I really can’t decide if I like this trade or absolutely hate it.

  4. seattle_raptors

I know Bobby is a fan favorite and Grant Williams is an annoying dork, but basketball-wise it makes sense.

Grant Williams’ value is at an all-time low and while he can’t do much offensively, he’s perfect for Giannis at the 5 lineups imo. His defense not looking as good has more to do with the Kidd-Sweeney “dumb and dumber” duo than his ability. He was key in guarding Giannis and KD in the playoffs 2 years ago and he’s a good 3PT shooter.

  5. Big-Suggestion3053

Mavericks fans hate him but I liked him on the celtics

  6. Nomorenightcrawlers

I’ve always hated this guy. But I wouldn’t mind his defensive toughness and I don’t mind a role player that understands his role with the team and doesn’t try to do too much

  7. Ecruteak-vagrant

I’d do this in a heart beat. Especially if you find a way to get a cheap C on the waiver market as insurance. Grant Williams comes off as a basketball nerd but that’s a compliment.

  8. Defensively it’s a great trade but we lose a bench scorer who can create on his own if we ship out Bobby. I know this sub is very down on him with his inconsistent shooting and lack of passing at times, but he is still truly one of the best scorers off the bench in the league and a great rebounder. I think this would need to come with another trade to bolster bench scoring

  9. Slow-Jelly-2854

I’d like it more if it was for Pat. Williams has been awful this year. His stock should be way lower than Bobby who’s had a much better season, even if he hasn’t played as well as us Bucks fans had hoped for. This would feel like an undersell quite honestly

  10. stevenomes

I just hate looking at his temples. I could get used to it I suppose but I haven’t really seen him this year (thankfully). Had he just fallen out of favor in Dallas or is he losing effectiveness?

  11. MacDemarcoMurray

i’ve heard Grant Williams has taken a significant step back on defense. but even so he would probably still make us much better on defense.

would hate to trade Bobby but this would make our small ball lineups so much better

  12. CaptainJYD

Need to retain Bobby if this trade happens, ik yall hate him now but he is the only reliable bench scorer we have.

Ship off Pat and Marjon idk, throw some other in there. But Bobby will be a more significant loss than people think.

  13. RandyMarshHunt42

Gross. 4/53m contract and I am confident that they could find a better move involving BP

  14. sikontoure

No. No. NO. I’ll rather keep Bobby than get Grant.

  15. americanbeaver

This is the first name that has been connected to the Bucks that actually would make me a little bit salty. I’ll root for anyone on the Bucks but I really don’t like watching Grant Williams play.

  16. GRAW2ROBZ

Not sure about Bob for Smith. Maybe. I could see Beauchamp,Pat and a second rounder landing us Dorian Finney Smith.

  17. SportEnjoyer

I’m going to be careful not to fall into the Doc Rivers “he cooked us so he’s good” fallacy. This is a guy that has fallen out of (or at least to the fringes of) two rotations back to back.

I’m glad they’re exploring deals, but just because he hit open 3s we gave him by design doesn’t mean he’s gonna be a help to us this postseason.

  18. the_Formuoli_

The vibe swap would be absolutely heinous though it might make some sense basketball wise

  19. FlipMoBitch

Bucks almost traded Donte for Grant a while back so I’m not surprised by this report

  20. 1998TimThomas

If Horst does this, he’s really slipping.

  21. grudgepacker

While I know a lot of people on this sub want to move Bobby, Grant’s a downgrade in every single way – we better get some draft capital back if this happens

  22. GRAW2ROBZ

Are we getting any draft picks back? Williams is having a down year. Unless we trading Bob for Williams. Then a follow up of Pat and either Cam or Beauchamp for another piece. Doesn’t seem all that exciting just moving Bob or Pat. Also if Williams is falling off. He’s owed $53M. But he is playing for Kidd. Williams could bounce back in Milwaukee with 3 and D. I’d still do a follow up trade of any or all of Pat,Beauchamp,Cam,Robin.

  23. QBRisNotPasserRating

Shuffling the chairs on the Titanic.

The real move is to trade Dame again while he still has value. Fans will hate it, the media will hate it, this sub will hate it, but his name recognition far exceeds his actual value on the court in my opinion.

  24. FlipMoBitch

This is extremely speculative, but this could be a scenario where the Bucks are sending out a package that includes bobby and are trying to get a third team to take him on as part of that deal

  25. snowstorm608

Not really sure this does much for either team.

Grant is only 25, under contract for four years and doesn’t need to touch the ball as much as Bobby to have an impact. From that standpoint I would like it for the Bucks. But it doesn’t really address the biggest needs on this team.

  26. Novel_Bookkeeper_622

Grant Williams is neither a PoA defender or a rim protector. What’s he doing for us against our Eastern Conference competitors?

Is he successfully guarding Tatum or Brown? Brunson? Haliburton? Embiid(if he’s back)?

We get rid of our most consistent bench points for a defender that can’t guard the players we need someone to guard.

  27. whos-spamuel

I can’t have Grant Williams on my team, i just cannot do it

  28. JustinF608

Nah. There’s better deals you could package Bobby in.

  29. GRAW2ROBZ

Unless the Mavs giving us a first round pick as well as Williams?

  30. kawhi_laugh69

As bad as Bobby has been at times, he’s still better than Grant Williams. Don’t think like this trade at all.

  31. 1998TimThomas

We need athleticism at the wing. Not some overweight below-the-rim chode. We’re already too slow as is, no idea how this helps us.

  32. LiveFrmTheGutter

I‘m retiring from the Milwaukee Bucks fandom in that case

  33. Please god no. Bucks don’t need a mouthy overweight dude to stand in the corner and brick 3s. He got paid from 1 playoff series against the bucks!

  34. hondaworkaccount

    Bucks fans: “TRADE PORTIS”

    Horst: “Ok, for Grant Williams.”

Bucks fans: “Wait no, not like this”

  35. i’d totally take this.

    grant brings 3 and d.

    lowers our roster age.

  36. Our bench scoring is already trash, this trade would make it downright awful

  37. Lmao people here thought Bobby could get Dejounte Murray

  38. SwagTwoButton

Not gonna judge anything until it’s final. If we got grant for just Bobby, that would still leave two seconds and Pat/Marjon/ajax to possibly add to the roster.

With how little assets we do have, buying low on a guy like grant and hoping he fits our system better might be our best chance to drastically improve our roster.

  39. ImperialSympathizer

Given our track record of bringing in players who immediately forget how to shoot, Grant Williams might go below 20%

  40. Mateuss1111

Let me ask they guys that hate trading Portis for Grant this. Why would a team that has the 2nd best offense in league history (that is a statistical fact) care that they lose a one-dimensional iso/post-up scorer who can’t play defense?

Bobby is great, but not necessary let alone essential to this team’s success (at least not anymore). Yes, he is an efficent scorer, hell I would even say he is great at that and should be at least a one-time 6MOTY winner by this point. BUT HE IS JUST THAT, A SCORER.

The one thing that he is great at [offense], at times comes to the detriment of this team’s success. He practically never passes the ball, he is an isolation post-up big, which is something we do not need in the slightest. He often brings the whole offensive flow to a complete halt because of his ISO game and lack of any passing or playmaking.

Bobby can be a good rebounder (especially for his mpg) which is really the only significant drop of if we swap him for Grant, that this team should care about.

He provides grit and toughness just like Grant. But in contrast to Williams he does not provide any, and I mean any defensive input. When Bobby is Ass instead of On They Ass offensively he is nothing more than a liability. You can’t say that about Williams who will always be better than Bobby on the defensive end.

Yes Grant has a down year. But what people fail to recognize is that no matter how good of a defender someone is, if an organization puts them in a situation with a bad defensive system… or lack of a defensive system, without a clearly defined roles under a head coach who (if you guys remember J. Kidd in MIL) is pretty much a walking dumpster fire, and tells tham to be a defensive anchor while they are not nearly good enough to be that, THEY WILL STRUGGLE.

This team needs a good defensive wing, that provides grit and toughness, and player with playoff experience. That is exactly what Willams is.

Now don’t get me wrong I don’t think Grant Williams is the lord and savior of this team. No. But we need a defensive upgrade. Grant checks all the major boxes and will come relatively cheap. This team is not nearly at it’s offensive apex and has a lor of room to improve. WE HAVE GIANNIS AND DAME FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. But as it stand right now, we are not getting much better defensivly with current roster. We need a trade. If by trading bobby we drop from the 2nd best offense of all time to a 3rd but get from 19 in defense to top 10, yeah we go from paper contenders to real ones very fast.

PS: Yes I will still cry if they actually trade the Milwaukee mayor

  41. smellzlikeyeti

I will take Bobby’s streaky performance if that means I don’t have to look at Grant Williams’s punchable face every game. Fuck that guy.
