Joe Mazzulla Previews Celtics NBA Trade Deadline

Joe Mazzulla Previews Celtics NBA Trade Deadline

We uh sweatshirt with your own name on it well it is a real school okay I like that Pik Kansas the yeah moua Montana huh there’s a Missoula Montana that’s not the same it’s not not the same spelling spelled the same no I didn’t think

So like good try that was a good try I know I know I know know I got it you’re good good jayen practice yeah everyone else good to go yep what was the focus today uh just continuing to build the habits offensively um continue to keep our defensive

Principles at the same time stay open-minded to things that you know we can recognize throughout the game and uh you know situational basketball I think try to do it throughout the entire year um but today we focus more on just situational stuff we’ve executed some stuff at the end of quarters pretty well

But we’ve missed some stuff throughout the year that we got to execute in certain situations so uh big emphasis on situational basketball what’s this week going for you obviously last year was a little bit more of a scramble but are you talking to Brad daily are you kind of talking to

Different guys kind of looking ahead to Thursday things might happen might not happen but what’s kind of your role in at all do you talk to all uh I mean we talk obviously uh we talk every day um but really just kind of listening understanding I think like I said before

The most important thing for me is never being a coach that always feels like we have to have something and uh very comfortable with our roster very confident with 1 through 17 and everybody roster has done something to impact winning and that’s the most important thing and so that’s kind of my

Focus yeah that’s kind of where you guys have yeah I mean he you know it’s his job to you know obviously make that decision but I never want to be a coach that feels like you always have to have something else and uh more about just focus on what we want to make

Better so uh that’s kind of where I’m at and uh you know he does what he does Brad said when he talked to us like a month ago he said basically he doesn’t want to take away from what you guys have the locker room everything like

That um what is there to preserve their in in the locker room me one I think character um not to say that you know there’s bad people but I think when you develop a locker room character over the course of the season that’s very hard to replicate uh and then I think really

Just familiarity I think uh one of the keys uh for a roster for a locker room is for role guys to uh kind of find their Niche within a within a team and uh within a system and really you know the relationship between uh you know

Your stars and the role players and the trust that they build amongst each other is super important and I think both parties really facilitate that trust and that relationship and so having a change will kind of start that process over and then obviously just the language offensively and defensively the the

Culture aspect of it so there’s just a lot that goes into it how is that fit for you guys the relationship between the Stars the role players the best I mean it’s really that comes down to them like their ability to uh you know trust one another to have an impact on each

Other to understand the relationship between two and three man parties on how they can impact each other offensively and defensively the connectiv in communication so uh that’s just they do that consistently whether it’s in practice or games and that’s something that you can’t really replace you know

And uh our guys do a good job of working with that you mentioned you talking to Brad every day as a head coach do you have a wish list of sorts do you ever say to him this is what I think might help us get over you’ve been playing 50

Games so far obviously yeah no I don’t have no I don’t have a wish list like I said I don’t want to be one of those guys uh that took my opinion um throughout the year and but at the end of the day like you know we have one of

The best team of the league and I think we have one of the best rosters and so my focus is to try to just get to to maximize that you know and I think that’s uh that’s kind of mindset you have to have you always sit there and

Say we need something else you’re missing an opportunity to grow at some so just you know try not to do that specifically what have you seeing for Moshe to earn that trust and and I think when we’re talking about that you know he’s the one in particular where it’s

Like he’s done a great job earning the players trust earning the coaches trust and just making waiting plays and started his first game we put him in Miami changed the dynamic of the game and so he’s grown over the last week and a half of uh the recognition of offense

Of matchup recognition how to impact um you know our offense but the the hard thing about him is he’s always playing with different lineups sometimes he plays with Luke sometimes he plays with Al sometimes he plays with KP and uh but he’s done a great job of uh offensive

Rebounding he’s done a great job of spatial awareness he’s done a great job of executing our uh coverages defensively and he always gives us a boost when he plays Joe are you are you yourself looking forward to the all-star break there five games left and it’s kind of everybody’s kind of grinding and

That are you looking forward to that break or would you want to continue the season I hate break I wish there wasn’t even a half time just keep playing there’s a report that Jaylen seriously considering the dunk contest have you guys talked about that do you

Have any thoughts uh I haven’t you know whatever he wants to do that’s his time think you be good at it sure you would be yeah probably good at anything you tries that oh what was that experience like last year coaching the allar team

And what you kind of get out of that uh it was it was fun it was really good observing uh your opponent in their own element and kind of uh without them knowing you’re constantly looking at their habits and how they carry themselves and the conversations that

They have and you get a get a read on their personalities and so that was the the most fun part was kind of reading your adversaries uh when they’re comfortable and uh constantly taking notes on it that was fun uh and then you know the ability to watch you know the

Two guys that you work with every day achieve a dream of theirs is fun and then I think it was really good um so yeah you say that is that a joke or how serious that you were get to so what were you picking up on just body language habits conversations thought

Processes you know the things they try to orchestrate during the game or the same their comfort levels are within the game and uh you know any little piece of information you can extract to use to your competitive Advantage think is important so U I hope to get back there

One day so I can continue to do that I laugh

Joe Mazzulla said he doesn’t want to be a coach that asks for more from Brad Stevens, and while he talks to Stevens every day, he’s relayed that he doesn’t believe the Celtics have to add at this trade deadline. He’s leaving that responsibility to Stevens and also discussed the upcoming all-star break, which he wishes wasn’t happening, and shared his perspective on coaching the game last year.
