Network your team every day available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelin Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison at Nola Jake on Twitter here with y’all on this Wednesday day before the NBA’s trade deadline we’re going to get into the latest rumors

Around the Pelicans we got some updated ones here here and look at why they want to move on from certain guys and maybe there’s a couple of additional people on the trading block that you might uh might not be aware of we’ll break it all down in today’s episode of Locked on

Pelicans here and of course thank you for making locked on Pelicans your first listen today and every day we are here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know about this Pelicans team be coming every day or and listen Monday through Friday today’s

Episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase so let’s get into a couple of things here one thing I want you to keep in mind and we’ll look at the rumors around the Pelicans in

Today’s show but it’s kind of interesting that there aren’t a ton of trade rumors around the team like there normally are we’ll get more into that in the next segment because I do think it could lead to something that the Pelicans might end up doing but there is

One persistent theme around the Pelicans with regard to the trade deadline and guys they’ve been looking to move and that’s Jonas Val chunis right he has been the guy on The Chopping Block here for the Pelicans they’ve wanted to upgrade at the center position but for a

Guy that is a very good player averaging 14.1 points per game 9.7 rebounds and a block and someone who has actually won them games and is by far their best rebounder why are they looking to do that you might ask he’s a good player as we’ve long said here and I’ve advocated

The Pelicans shouldn’t trade him but when you look at a couple of things around the team with it look I get where they’re coming from when it comes to this right so first and foremost what they want to do defensively is switch on the perimeter the way they their defense

Is kind of built around and the scheme that they have is they’re not going to let you get into the paint if you can’t get into the paint you can’t get those easy efficient shots at the rim and they defend the perimeter really well they’re actually number one in terms of opponent

Three-point percentage from the perimeter so they do a very good job of this yonas munis can’t defend on the perimeter there is very much going to be a problem in the playoffs where teams just put him in the pick and roll and force him to defend and he’s going to

Get eaten alive and the Pelicans will struggle with that I think he’s a very good regular season Center I’m not sure that he’s a good postseason Center and that’s something that if the Pelicans have hopes of making a long playoff run that they’ve got to factor in to kind of

Their calculus with this so the defense right it just hasn’t been there particularly in the second half of games talked a little bit about that yesterday if you’re an everyday or they just need better offense I think and it would be fine they’s still been a good defensive

Team this season even with yonas valent chunis but there’s a reason they often close with Larry Nance Jr over yonas valent chunis and for Jonas making 15 plus million doar to not be closing games isn’t the most efficient or effective use of money of your salary

Cap in terms of a percentage of that that you could have so because they just don’t use him as much as they could or as efficiently as they could maybe you look to move on from from him there the defense is a big part of that you also

Can see that the starters are not particularly jelly or working great they have kns where they look fantastic like they did against the Toronto Raptors the other evening there’s also times where you look at them and go this isn’t it part of that is that Jonas V Tunis isn’t

You know a three-point threat he’s also not a lob threat this is a guy that needs to play with his back to the bask up in a uh Bas back to the basket in a postup game you want Zion to do that I don’t know if you really want very many

Other players to do that so because of the way he his style is it kind of doesn’t fit and maybe doesn’t gel with the starters as much and the starters have a negative net rating on the season and that’s certainly not what you want to see so the starters aren’t working so

Maybe if you replace him that would make sense look you’re not going to replace Zion Williamson you’re probably not going to replace Brandon Ingram you’re certainly not going to replace CJ maybe you could replace herb Jones with Trey Murphy but the more likely candidate here would be ship out yonas V chunis

And bring in in a different starting Center and see what that does for you so I get all of these reasons but really one of the most important ones to keep in mind with everything that the team does is the salary cap and future Seasons here you know the way it

Operates in the NBA for those who are new is you going into the offseason are an over the cap team or an under the cap team basically you’re an over the cap team or a cap space team very few teams are a cap space team that just means you

Have X amount of dollars under the salary cap you can go out and spend it in free agency you see maybe five to seven of those every season because of the way the Pelican salary is they’re going to operate as an overthe cap team for the foreseeable future there’s

Almost no way they become an a cap room team essentially what this means is with Jonas valunas on an expiring deal not under contract next season is if he walks and his $15 million falls off the books you don’t just have $15 million to go out and spend in free agency to

Replace that player you have significantly less than that the Pelicans would be looking at maybe 11 12 million per year to sign a guy to that is only one guy that they can sign to that sort of deal so if you lose yonas munis in free agency for whatever reason

You can’t just go and be like all right cool we got $50 million to spend we’re going to go out and get another guy it doesn’t work like that and that’s a big concern for the Pelicans that if they let him walk they likely don’t have the

Money to go and get any sort of replacement for him so because he’s out of contract at the end of this year and the risk that that comes with it it’s smart to trade for a guy that’s under contract in multiple Seasons right that’s why when you look at some of the

Names that the Pelicans have been linked to in trades or people have talked about they’re downgrades right um Michael C Jr is worse than Jonas Val chunis is Daniel Gafford is worse than Jonas Val chunis is the great thing about those guys in this sense is they’re under contract

Next season so you don’t run into that problem of kind of keeping your team intact and not having the tools or the assets to be able to go out and replace that guy so that’s one of the reasons why the Pelicans are also looking to trade yonas valent chunis the way I’ve

Summed it up if you’re an everyday or you’ve heard me say this before is when you look at the situation around yonas valent chunis well it’s not that he’s a bad player the Pelicans are looking at him and going look yonas it’s not you it’s us we need more Financial Security

To kind of build this team we need better defense we need a better fit with the starters you’re a great player it’s just it’s it’s us it’s not you kind of thing and that’s truly I think what it is so the Pelicans have looked for all

Of that right now there have been a couple big names they’ve been linked to with this you know they’ve called about Miles Turner from the Indiana Pacers but he’s not going to get traded you know the other big name they’ve really looked at trying to get is Jared Island from

The Cleveland Cavaliers who I think could be a good fit and a very good replacement and is an upgrade over Jonas Valen chunis I just don’t think that either of those two guys are going to be available for the team this year I don’t think either of those two guys are

Getting traded at all unless you massively overpay but then you start to get into asset mismanagement there too and that’s what the Pelicans are trying to avoid and this is why you know they’ve kind of canvased the league for Center position upgrades and haven’t really found anything yet and nothing

Really makes sense and because I don’t want to see this team downgrade in talent and become worse this season I’ve said maybe don’t make a move whatsoever so that’s something to kind of keep in mind as we hit the final 24 48 48 Hours of the trade deadline when you’re

Listening to the show but certainly he’s the main guy that’s going to be on the Block there’s some others we’ll get into them in the third segment that I could see being traded away from the New Orleans Pelicans 2o but I want to go into this the what I’d said kind of in

The beginning of this show is Pelicans aren’t linked to everyone there’s not a ton of new trade rors there are some and I’ll share them with you in the next segment but there aren’t a ton like there normally are around this team and I find that kind of interesting so I

Want to look at that and talk about why and why it might mean the Pelicans make a weird kind of trade at the trade deadline and I’ll explain coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I’m excited to tell you about eBay Motors passion drive

Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know about this Pelicans team and in the leadup to the trade deadline we’re going to be covering everything that you need to know and on will’ll make sense of what happened whether someone was moved

Or wasn’t we’re going to be covering it here on lock on Pelicans also getting you set for the weekend with a back-to-back set for the Pelicans tomorrow we’ll break down their game against the Los Angeles Clippers because it is a game day for the New Orleans Pelicans here as they travel on their

Marty gr road trip so let’s get back into the trade rumors here normally the Pelicans are linked to like literally everybody but not this year normally they’re used as leverage they’re looking to upgrade multiple positions you might might have heard that they’re looking to move Brandon Ingram or Zion Williamson

Like everyone’s on the Block they could do anything cuz they want to cash in some of the chips that they have here some of that war chest of assets but you’re really not hearing that this year and I find it kind of interesting and I think there’s a couple of reasons why

And I think and that’s the point of this segment is it might lead to a move that you find confusing but is very Forward Thinking by the New Orleans Pelicans so part of the reason that they’re really not linked to a ton of different people

Is the big names on the trading block in the NBA this year don’t really make sense for the Pelicans right you know the biggest prize might be Deonte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks but does he really make a ton of sense for New Orleans if you trade for him you kind of

Need to remake the roster around that sort of move and that means a lot more work and potentially not being able to get that done and then you have a weird mismatched team you know a guy like Zack LaVine just doesn’t make a ton of sense

For the Pelicans either you know and who else is really like out there that could potentially get moved we’ve heard names like Kyle kozma what’s he going to bring to this New Orleans Pelicans team I don’t really think there’s much so because of that I don’t really see the

Pelicans being linked to any of those names because you know that if you were to hear that you’d be like yeah whatever G get out of here essentially right and then the guys that they would be interested just aren’t going to be moved we just talked about Jared Allen in the

Last segment here of how the Cavaliers are 14- one over the past 15 games they’re playing the best basketball in the Eastern Conference right now they’re not looking to move anybody because they’re going to find a way to make it work with Evan Mobley and Jared Allen

And they have time before they need to kind of figure out who are the long-term pieces there with that team so they don’t need to do that then you also have Mel Bridges right the Pelicans have made apparently a competitive offer to him per reports out there Action Network and

Others but it sounds like the Nets and I think this is a mistake just aren’t going to move that guy and I think that’s kind of some of the theme with a lot of these guys right Larry marinin or the Utah Jasmine makes a ton of sense

But I think they want to be competitive and they look to build around him Jordan Clarkson would make sense for the Pelicans maybe to come off the bench is kind of that microwave popcorn score but they don’t really have salaries to make it work so when you look at trades

Around this team like does anything really make a ton of sense and to me look not saying they won’t pull off a move but there aren’t a ton of Trades out there that you look at and go oh yeah that’s the move couple years ago right like the CJ McCulla move made a

Ton of sense for both teams for Portland and New Orleans and so when that move got closer and closer to happening and the rumors started coming out about that you’re like yeah totally these teams are definitely talking because that makes a ton of sense doesn’t make sense for the

Cavs to trade away Jared Allen I think the Nets should trade Bridges away but saying that we got offered five first round picks or four first round picks for him and we’re not going to move him doesn’t actually help you so I don’t know exactly if that was the case or not

It just doesn’t seem like any of the room rumors make a ton of sense with this team I also think and this is going to lead to kind of again the point of this segment here is some of this is also the picks they have left over maybe

Just aren’t the most valuable you know they have one remaining pick from the Anthony Davis trade that’s you know either this year or next year it’s at their discretion that looks to potentially be a good pick this year with the Lakers really struggling things but you know the the other picks they

Have from the Milwaukee Buck and others look to kind of be devalued with Giannis there longterm Damen Lillard there those picks you know are basically going to be second round picks at best here and not at Best But like late first rounders and that’s not an ideal situation for the

Pelicans to try and kind of see the value increase you know they maybe held on to those a little bit too long so this team that used to have all these very valuable and intriguing first round picks have now kind of seen those picks actualized a little bit and they maybe

Don’t have as much much value as they would before the other thing that’s of note is the Pelicans own all of their own picks so you could trade for a Pelicans pick but if you were to trade away a good player Jared Allen coming to the Pelicans here right that’s going to

Devalue those picks because this core is then together for the long-term future with flexibility to trade guys away and build some sustainability in and if they’re upgrading at the center position like that yeah I don’t know if those picks are going to be the most valuable

So I think teams around the league are looking at the p dra future draft assets and going like maybe these aren’t that great right and when you look at that they could have two three first round picks in this upcoming draft it’s a weak draft this is considered the weakest

Draft in a long time so do you really want a 2024 Pelicans first- round pick in a weak draft that’s not going to be in theory a good pick teams probably aren’t and I think that’s leading to a lot of the Pelicans picks and you know trade rumors not being linked to them

Because I think teams know if you kind of put that out as leverage negotiating through the media if you will the teams are going to kind of see right through that and it’s not going to end up working so that leads to trading some of their picks for other future picks and

This comes from Jake fiser of Yahoo saying teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and others are trying to acquire some immediate draft Capital to try and package with other things and try and improve their team so basically what this means is and you’ve seen a couple of teams do things like this the Phoenix

Suns did it recently is you trade say your 2024 Pelicans first round pick for a future pick swap plus something else so essentially you trade this first round pick for the rights to swap with the team that you’re trading with and maybe three or four second round picks

The Pelicans don’t have a tradable second round pick until 2030 that is literally the only second round pick that they can trade that was a bit of an issue with trying to move Kyo Lewis Jr when you’re trying to dump guys or move off of smaller things you need to kind

Of Grease the wheels lanap if you will with second round picks and because the Pelin had to use four when they traded away Devonte Graham Now using one when they traded away um I just blanked on Kyro Lewis Jr you you run out of those assets and those assets are important so

Trading a buck pick or one of these kind of worst first round picks I think could be a smart move so I would not be shocked if you see the Pelicans trade their draft pick in this upcoming draft again a weaker draft keep that in mind

For future draft Capital to kind of help rebuild this war ch that has kind of dried up a little bit not a ton you know picks are still currency and having a bunch of them which the Pelicans do is only a good thing but also if you can maybe turn

Those into better Assets in the future you’re kind of gambling a little bit there is a direction that the Pelicans might look to try and do so if they end up doing a a pick for picks deal on trade deadline day that’s kind of why I think they’re kind of banking that the

Picks will have more value in the future or give them additional assets they need to kind of make some of the moves that they want so I understand the direction that they would be going should something like that happen and given they’re not linked to a ton of names but

Maybe you need to do something or do a little bit more long-term planning would not be shocked if that gets done in the leadup to the NBA’s trade deadline but what about other areas that they could upgrade other guys that are going to potentially be on the Block let’s talk

About that because I’ve got a name or two that might surprise you that’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I’m excited to tell you about game time because game time makes buying tickets to events super easy it’s a frustrating process you don’t know if

P.m subscribe to locked on fantasy basketball on YouTube today so you don’t miss Josh lyd breaking down every NBA trade with analysis and insight you can only get from locked on fantasy basketball part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day so as we

Start to wrap up kind of a trade deadline primer here we know as we talk about in the first segment the move the Pelicans are looking to do is to trade away Jonas funis and kind of do something different whether that’s an upgrade or not or just long-term

Thinking at the center position but there are other areas I think they could stand to upgrade and wouldn’t be a bad thing that if they want to try and do that I have long said I think backup point guard is a very big need for this

Team you’ve seen it in the past couple of games with Jose Alvarado playing a very pivotal role for this franchise I’d just like a little bit more size a little bit more height and a little bit bit more offense there one of seven from three the other night while I think he

Plays an important role as one of my favorite players on the team look you got to get more offense from that backup point guard position particularly if you’re going to pair him with Brandon Ingram which I think is the move and unlock bi a little bit more if you can

Get some more shooting from that backup point guard position he becomes playable in a lot more other lineups a little bit more size there too means you can probably then afford to play him with Jordan Hawkins since in the half court your defense won’t be rough all of that

I think is really important it’s tough to find a backup point guard that makes a ton of sense tus Jones of the Washington Wizards would be great but he’s going to be a free agent after this season and he also wants to become a starter again having played kind of that

Role before at times so he might bolt in free agency elsewhere and as we just talked about the Pelicans are trying to avoid a situation like that with yonas Valen chudis so I don’t know if that’s going to end up making a ton of sense for this team and the direction that

They really want to go in even if that’s something that I expect them and it’s been reported that they will pursue during this off seon but there’s a couple of other guys that I think in theory could be on the trade block for New Orleans might not be the easiest

Thing to find homes for they might get traded for future draft Capital but more likely not and let’s look at some of those names so actually let’s let’s let’s stick on the draft Capital part of this right now the Pelicans have an open roster spot they need to fill so if they

Do in any of these deals this is something that’s worth keeping in mind an unbalanced trade they send out two guys bring one back that means they have another roster spot they still need to fill so if you send out Jonas valunas and Dyson Daniels for Jared Allen or

Jonas valunas and Herb Jones hopefully not for Jared Allen you then need to sign somebody else if the trade your making puts you back into the luxury tax signing an additional two guys puts you deeper into the luxury tax something the pelant have looked to avoid so that’s

Worth keeping in mind when you’re coming up with your fake trades when I was grading a lot of them uh last week on last Friday show if you’re and every day and I was a little bit harsh on that y’all weren’t thinking about that but that’s going to factor into this too

Again I was basically the only Pelicans media person last offse or last trade deadline that said they weren’t going to make a big move because they were worried about the salary cap and what did they do they dumped Devonte Graham’s contract not for That season but for

This season it was also why they didn’t end up moving Jackson Hayes and simply let him expire if you had traded him and brought 7 milon back this team would still be about $4 to5 million in the luxury tax even after dumping Kyo Lewis Jr and how much does that limit them

Then so that’s you’ve got to factor in the open roster spots signing guys cost you money all of that stuff unfortunately with being a small Market team in one of two franchises that has never paid the luxury tax in NBA history so with that I still think they are

Going to look to move certain players because it just seems to make some sense sense for them right Naji Marshall is an expiring deal this is a guy that I think has done a very good job here the Pelicans should be really proud of his development and the energy role that he

Plays off the bench for this team has started games on occasion too this is a guy they brought up and his worked on and worked his way into the NBA earning you know about after this season it’s going to be almost $6 million in his career that’s a really big deal here I

Think $6.5 million or so but what’s his next contract going to look like he’s making $1.9 million this season you know is he a guy that’s like an $8 million player a $5 million player do the Pelicans kind of have it on their can they carry that on their books given

They’re already pushing the luxury tax which is the core group of guys that they have right there’s almost no avoiding paying the luxury tax next season do they really want to pay it if they really want to get deep in there you know pay na Marshall five to eight

Million per year whatever he’s G to get but I think they also might know that his time here is done that they just don’t have the money to resign him this coming off seon so if that’s going to be the case look you probably should look

To move him I think you could have Matt Ryan step in and give you more shooting less defense less Hustle but I think you could have Matt Ryan out there and see what he’s capable of and he would be just as cheap if not cheaper than njin

Marshall and you could sign him to a multi-year contract right now so I think that’s an option for the Pelicans that hey you know if we’ve got to do this this is unfortunately what it is is and Naji Marshall kind of becomes a cap casualty at that point in time it also

Can be potentially and I’m not saying that it is addition by subtraction right one of the things we have lamented this season is Willie Green leans way too much on the defense and doesn’t go enough offense uh with some of the rotations and lineups look Naji Marshall

As much as we love him here is not an offensive player right like this is a guy who is shooting decent from three this year at 36% but is a 30% three-point shooter for his career doesn’t do it on volume that’s also partially just due to the amount of

Minutes and stuff that he plays so you know if you take that away from Willie Green he’s then forced to play Matt Ryan which is more offense more shooting or a guy like Jordan Hawkins who’s recently fallen out of the rotation so it’s not addition by subtraction let’s say but

It’s also just here are the tools available to the head coach and he’s got to make do with what he has and what he has as offensive players well there you go but we’re going to see you know we still have got as I’m recording this

About 36 hours to go uh 48 hours to go when you’re listening to this it might be 24 that means there’s going to be more rumors flying things don’t get done until the very very end but I will say this I think it could be a very quiet

Trade deadline usually the Monday of the trade deadline is when things start flying I’m recording this on a Tuesday we haven’t really seen any deals get done so I don’t know if this is going to be a busy trade deadline or if the work with Pascal seak OG an anobi and others

Was done earlier on but let me know what you want to see the pans do in the comments Down Below on YouTube and as always I’m your host Jake Madison noet Jake on Twitter this is the lockdown Pelin podcast part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day we’ll recap

  1. I wish we would stop talking trades. Our team can win against anyone on any given night. Develop the chemistry and demand better coaching. Listening to Willie during press conferences puts me to sleep. He says what he’s suppose to and doesn’t seem genuine.

  2. I got it the answer came to me after my first joint get jose, naji and someone else to take the league minimum then they can do advertising for the saints and ms Benson's car lots for a couple of million a year professional nil deal first of its kind make them change the rules because of it and call it the ms Benson rule 😅

  3. I still believe that with this roster we ain’t gonna win the first playoff series..not because of talent but rather inconsistency, bad defense and tendencies to sucks when a game really matter.

  4. Pelicans should trade Dyson Daniels and Hawkins and there 2024 and 2025 1st round draft picks for Tyler Herro
And then they should trade Marshall and Cody Zeller and there 2026 and there 2027 1st round draft picks for Clint Capela
