It is over. – The Mavericks say they have agreed to swap their own 2028 first-round pick with Oklahoma City’s own 2028 first-round pick in order to obtain a 2024 first-round pick from the Thunder.

Get ready to be frustrated with our rebounding for the rest of the season.

I don’t get it, just don’t get it why? Waiting for Luka to get frustrated and leave and Dallas blow up?

    **Dallas Receives:**

    – Thunder 2024 1st (2nd least favorable, projecting late 20s)

    – Thunder 2028 1st (projecting 30th)

    **Thunder Receive:**

    – Dallas 2028 1st

*Swap may not convey if Dallas has better record than Thunder.

Thunder bet on their future over Dallas’s. Ends up being a two for one to kick the can down the road and hope for the Mavs downfall.

This is good. That pick is in the late 20s in an awful draft class. If we’re not making more trades, you might as well prolong your assets. The 2028 might even have the potential to be valuable depending on how things go with Luka in the next few years.

The big move is being made in the off-season. We got a nice veteran addition, and now have all the cap space/assets for a move this summer.

This is really smart. You’re trading a pick in the high 20s this year in a meh draft class at the potential of a high pick in 2028 if Luka leaves. They will still have the HOU and Utah picks this year

So we are betting on Luka asking out in a few years then

This is just objectively a good move. We’re basically taking a mediocre pick and turning it into a pick of unknown value.

Even if the Mavs are good there’s a shot that the 26th pick in 2028 is worth more than the 20th pick in 2024 or whatever. Beyond that we don’t have to draft another player this year. It’s a good move.

Honestly…? I love this. We trade a pick between 26-30 in an awful draft class for a pick swap that’s four years out. Could Luka be a Maverick still? Yeah, of course, but what if he’s not? PJ and Gafford aren’t needle movers.

Think about how different the NBA was four years ago. Damian Lillard was a Trail Blazer, Kevin Durant was a Net, and James Harden was a Rocket.

Worst case scenario, we just kicked the can down the road to a time we’ll be in need of cheap rotational help.

Trading a pick for a swap sounds lame. Why are we automatically better than Dallas four years from now? What if we have the 2015 injury season from hell again? We will have given away a pick for nothing when what we could have done is use the pick for Gafford now.

  10. So I’m not extremely educated in pick swaps that NBA is but can someone dumb this down for me please? How is that we swap a pick for a pick but then give up a 24 first rounder and it end up being good for us?
