Joe Mazzulla Told Celtics ‘Inappropriate’ Joke at Halftime | Postgame Interview

Joe Mazzulla Told Celtics ‘Inappropriate’ Joke at Halftime | Postgame Interview

How did those kind of play a role in the first half them taking the 71 points in the halftime uh that wasn’t a major product of those a few of them led to transition uh but it took us a little while to um combat their speed so to

Speak I think um uh they had the advantage in the first uh quarter and a halfs particularly with their speed and um we played into that uh with just some of our offensive execution in general Miss layup or a Miss shot didn’t really matter uh they had the advantage speed

Wise and so we did a decent job towards the end of the second qu kind of combatting that speed with some of our offense and then uh we were a little bit more physical defensively and then I thought we really uh chipped away at it in the third quarter it’s obviously a

Smaller team kristof’s kind of got his inside but is there more of an onus at The Rim in this game are those good shots even though there were some mislay yeah I mean that’s my thing is like I don’t care what it is like a good shot

It doesn’t matter where it is on the floor if if we take what the defense gives us and we’re taking advantage of what we think the other team’s weaknesses are then it doesn’t matter what kind of shot it is you know and I think uh we joke about about it a lot

But like the point is to uh infiltrate the defense take advantage of the weakness take the best shot possible uh based on their coverages and our matchups and I thought we slowed the game down in the middle of the second quarter and just kind of really went to

Uh you know our post spacing and and uh to control the pace and I think in the third quarter we used our defense to to do that and I thought that was a difference Joe you you talk about success looks different every night um and we think things should go a

Certain way so you kind of you gave up 36 transition points twice as much as you usually give up uh you struggled a little bit with the Hawks you it seems like lately it’s it’s not going the way we think it should where did you think

We struggled against the Hawks as far as defensively oh it was a 1.11 points per possession on the game I was like lowest in the league I thought we played really good defensively actually okay well and this this game yeah we definitely struggled this gamew game we didn’t um

But it just seems like lately there’s been some level of slippage is that something that would you’d say is accurate is that something that’s just a function of like January February or are these bad habits starting to creep in uh I don’t think there are habits uh I

Think there’s bad stretches I do think there’s been you know moments of slippage throughout games which uh you know you you obviously there’s going to happen throughout um but I think what I care more about is is our approach to those slippages like I don’t think

You’re going to negate those and I don’t think you’re going to eliminate those like it’s just not going to happen uh but the response to those is important and making sure they don’t uh slip for multiple quarters multiple games you know and uh so that’s kind of more

Important and I think I’ve said this a couple times uh because of what you said and it’s not just you I think it’s just in general uh people’s expectations When people’s expectations aren’t met that’s to me is where there’s more slippery because it’s like oh wait a minute this

Didn’t go how I thought it was going to go uh whereas if we can eliminate those expectations and just play um I thought you saw a significant shift in our team when we cut it to 7472 like we can’t always play the game as if it’s supposed

To go the way we think it’s supposed to go like this team’s good the Wizards are a good team like watched a lot of film on them they’ve they’ve lost games but they’ve lost a lot of close games and so uh by no surprise that the game went the

Way I thought it was going to go and I think that’s kind of the space that we have to live in you know yeah I guess the the transition like yeah there’s mislay like Bobby said but there’s you know transition is controllable right that’s one of those things that most of

The time 3 36 transition points is is something that should be more controllable and that just seems like an effort thing yeah uh I mean yeah there’s probably 10 to 12 of those points are effort absolutely no question uh you know and I think a lot of you know I

Don’t know the reason for that um but I would say out of those 36 points you know 10 to 12 of those were definitely effort based which it’s going to happen I just you’re never going to be able to prevent vent it from not happening it’s

More about how can we quickly get out of it how can we respond you know sort of sort of along those lines uh you know it’s whatever mid-February realistically you guys have a cushion in the East there’s some uh teams with lesser records you’re going to be

Playing how do you fight against boredom or letdowns coming in and becoming an issue like I know you fought out of it tonight in the third quarter and pushed it away but how do you ensure over these next like six weeks that that doesn’t there’s no way sure it’s going to happen

Again but I think it’s the principle of um having no expectations heading into the game like just zero expectations just because we’re playing a team that has a record of whatever their record is doesn’t mean we should be up by a certain amount like I think it’s pretty

Arrogant to think that um I think that’s you know and so getting away from uh having an expectation that the game’s going to go a certain way and more just kind of thriving and building an awareness to being exactly where we’re at and just working through it you know

And I thought I saw most of that in the third third quarter so like shouldn’t matter if we’re up five down 10 to a team that has a good record or a bad record that doesn’t matter what matters is like the process of how we play I

Think and so uh we just can’t fall into those narratives that um well this team has nine wins so we should be up by 15 at the end of the game when you say the expectations it sounds like you’re referring to the outside no it could be human Nature’s expectations anybody you

Know I mean anybody’s expectations but I mean like within within your team do they ever do you feel like they ever have those expectations um I mean it’s human nature I’m assuming that like yeah I’m sure they’re not waking up every day saying I can’t wait you know to attack

Every single you know second of every day so I’m sure they go through small moments of that but I think as a whole our team mindset has to be is we got to earn the win regardless of who we’re playing and just because it’s a nine-

Win team doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a close game we should almost rather want it to be a close game uh we got to work on a situation today that we simulated in shooter around like to me that’s I’d rather have that than have a blowout because we walk through two

Situations and they both happen in the exact game and we got them both down pack so I should I want as many close games as possible Joe how do you allow 42 in the fourth after 16 in the third what happened defensively in the fourth they had seven threes what happened

Defensively in the fourth they shot 43% a team that doesn’t usually shoot that well shot 43% from three and what did you say to them at halftime uh I showed him the 10 points in transition that I thought were effort-based and that was it and how do

You and I told a couple jokes in the third quarter mind is sharing with us no it’s pretty inappropriate jokes okay got but it broke the tension because we were playing with the expectation of why is the game going the way it’s going right now instead of just enjoying the fact

That the this is a game so we should just compete are you guys playing tight not playing tight um but the expectation of what how we think things should be so I’m not not playing tight there were some good jokes though I’m sure they were we’ll share I’ll share them off the

Record with there okay but to be able to have such a dominant third quarter yeah and everything works and you’re back to normal then in the fourth it changes and you guys are hanging on how do you how does that make you feel when it’s up and down at this point

Tonight they shot 43% from three and you have to make a decision on guys that aren’t great Shooters about how you’re going to defend at certain times and so you came into a game trying to take away certain guys and I thought they played a really good game um

But if they’re going to outshoot their expected performance in general you have to be uh very diligent about what you’re going to adjust to you know what I mean and so uh because we gave up so much transition in the first half that put pressure on guarding the three-point

Line in the second half and uh and they missed a decent amount of those looks that they ended up making in the fourth quarter but they were by guys that we were helping off of to make sure other guys didn’t you know so sometimes that’s just the nature of how that particular

Game is is going and you have to work to find the win within the the frame of how the game is going you know um because I thought we did U you know for chrisper to only get six threes off um you know that’s pretty good the way he’s been

Playing uh kman has been playing really well we held him to 17 but I thought a bunch of their other guys played a really good game and so I think it’s just how do we win within the frame of how the game is going um you know they

Set a they tied a club Rec for threes in a game yeah so is that a matter of just them hot shooting or is that your defense or sometimes you just got to accept that guys are just some I think it’s a little bit of both uh I think

It’s a little bit of both Um dang it uh it’s a little bit of both uh from the standpoint of if you let them get off to a good start and you know they see a couple go through then they’re obviously going to have a different uh approach to the game for

The rest of the game and then you know they’re feeling good about themselves and you have to work to kind of turn that off and so I thought that’s uh what happened with a couple of their guys and we just kind of had to adjust and work

Through it you know something want to say oh no I was thinking about something we’ll ask you a question that makes it actually feel like you won the game uh thank you finding these matchups which I also think is good the um like so obviously they they’re a

Smaller team right now um so you find porzingis and takes this kind of a step back in this game but is is doing other things yeah um you know it’s a big it’s a big Tatum night and you get other guys just finding you talk about like finding

The right matchup going to that how do you how do you feel like that went when you needed to to kind of pull this out uh down the stretch have you ever seen Spider-Man which one the into the spiderverse there’s like 20 different Spider-Mans that’s like our team um but

Like you said so I don’t know if necessarily took a backseat but you started off your question at the beginning of the Night by saying success is going to look different every night and um and so you take a look at the matchup that Drew was on he shot 13

Shots and and he did a great job of getting the ball down into the paint and either scoring or facilitating because the matchup that he had right uh and then when they went to their sum lineups we went to dererk and Chris DA’s pick and roll and then it was Jason Derek

Pick and roll and then Jaylen uh had his possessions with pton where he got good looks and so success is going to look different each and every night and uh I think the guys are doing a good job of understanding what that balance is and as long as the process towards how we’re

Going about attacking the other team is right and it fits in what’s best for the team then you know that’s just executing you know thank you Joe thank you Jason Jaylen here

BOSTON — Head Coach Joe Mazzulla spoke to reporters, following Jayson Tatum’s standout 35-point effort and a key third-quarter rally that propelled the NBA-leading Boston Celtics to their 40th win of the season, a 133-129 triumph over the Washington Wizards on Friday night. Kristaps Porzingis played a crucial role as well, contributing 34 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Celtics (40-12) to achieve 40 victories faster than any Celtics team since the 2008-09 squad, which did so in 49 games.

  1. U can’t tell me Brad traded some for new players n u want us to believe like ke kornet n hauser is better than them , I just can’t wait for him to lose in the play offs so he will get fired cuz no coach in the world will believe in their right mind hauser n kornet is better than anybody on the bench , see u at play offs for sure it will be your last as a Celtics coach cuz Brad gave u everything, clippers destroyed your kornet , u will joe mark my words

  2. We were lucky the Wizards doesn't have a center. Threes ain't falling but still no adjustments (as always) Porzingis save yo a$& tonight. I like how Tatum is aggressive attacking the basket.

  3. Joe think he is so smart but the way that he coaches is stupid. It’s as if he doesn’t understand what it takes to win a NBA Championship and he doesn’t because he has never won big at any level. The better coach in this lead will out coaches him in the playoffs. He just doesn’t get it. He sounds like a philosophers rather than a NBA coach. The doesn’t understand that this team should have blowout The Hawks and the Wizards. He really thinks that he educating somebody when in fact he is showing just how delusional he is.

  4. We are talking to a coach that lost 3 games in a roll at home yet the reporters listen to him like he knows what he is talking about.

  5. Joe this is not good Basketball and noone will be excused from this shytty play. Heads should roll this year. Sounds like he making fking excuses and sounding dumb. No beat the shyt out of them and rest players.

  6. This is the same thing that happened against Heat last year. I tell you this guy does not get it. The problem I have is what will Brad do after this year. Because he is going to repeat what he did last year. He sounds as if he doesn’t take the game serious. The Buck will be in first place at the 3/4 of the season and if they’re not it’ll be because of Holiday. White and Prozigsis not the two stars. They had their chance the last three seasons and they failed

  7. This guy still struggles to get through to his team when they get in these bad habits that is what scares me.
