“‘There was a point in time, Dallas, they definitely did want me,’ Kuzma told The Athletic on Monday, before the Wizards played the Mavericks at American Airlines Center. ‘Winger presented me with what the trade was and obviously didn’t want to trade me and kind of left the decision up to me a little bit and asked me what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to stay and continue to build something. And that was kind of the end of it.'”

  2. I’m glad we didn’t. I doubt Kuzma would want smaller role on the Mavs, he’d rather be the main option on a bad team than role player on a good one. Similar to Jerami Grant. Nothing wrong with it, but we don’t need unhappy players here. PJ might not be as good, but he knows his role and seems happy to play it.

I wonder what the package was. If Kuzma wanted to join it would have been basically a done deal.

  4. << Asked by The Athletic why he told Winger he wanted to remain with the Wizards instead of joining the Mavericks, Kuzma answered, “In my career, I won a championship. So, I understand that when we play this game of basketball it’s not about contending for a playoff spot. It’s about contending for an NBA championship. There’s only like three or four contenders — true contenders. I just felt like our timelines didn’t line up.” >>

So basically Kuzma doesn’t believe that adding him would turn the Mavs into a contender.

What about Gafford? I wonder if he was part of the trade package. If we had ended up with just Kuzma instead of Gafford and Washington then I’m glad the deal fell through.

    >After Winger informed Dallas general manager Nico Harrison there would be no deal for Kuzma, the teams agreed on a different trade. Washington traded center Daniel Gafford to Dallas for a 2024 first-round pick (the more favorable of the LA Clippers’ and Oklahoma City Thunder’s first-round picks) and center Richaun Holmes.

I’m good with Gafford and PJ.

Am I the only one who thinks pj is the much better fit? Last night kuzma looked slow and stiff and like it hurt his joints to make quick moves or maybe he just had really lazy body language. Is he suffering nagging injuries or something? His whole
Body was wrapped in sleeves and tights on his legs. We need an athlete who can defend not a low percentage volume scorer who looks hobbled. The last time I saw a player move like that on the court was dirk towards the end of his career.

  8. He won a ring already.. he’s turning 30 next year. He is probably just fine playing around in Washington, no pressure or anything and wait to be offered Beal-level extension to pack that last bag, because Wizards won’t have anyone else to spend it on.

I mean why would the Mavs FO think that he’d want to play w Luka?

The part where he mentioned he’s already won a title tells you that his main motivator is that if he stays in Washington, he gets to pump his numbers and he gets to be the main guy. There’s a pride thing there to start with but also he wants to beef up that next contract as much as possible.

I wouldn’t want him anyway. He’s a decent player, but he doesn’t have that winning mentality imho.

  12. Kuzma wants to be the alpha. He aint getting that role in Dallas

  13. whitefang0824

Glad they didn’t. You wouldn’t want someone with that kind of mentality on your team. He is someone who wouldn’t fit in team’s system. He is a taller THJ if we are being honest here lol.

im happy that the mavericks didn’t get kuzma, he wouldn’t get anywhere near as many touches which offensively limits what he could contribute. Washington’s contract is friendlier and is a better fit for the team.

if dallas didnt have irving than kuzma would be the better option but at this point they need good to great role players and not stars.
