Nikola Jokic comes in 1st in the latest NBA MVP straw poll

Nikola Jokic comes in 1st in the latest NBA MVP straw poll

The nuggets are about to hit the allstar break we’ll talk about their last game versus the Kings we’ll also hit on the MVP straw pole and whether or not Nicole yic can add his third MVP but the most important question is where we at with the nuggets at the All-Star break we’ll

Talk about all that more on locked on nuggets you are locked on nuggets your daily Denver Nuggets podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to locked on nuggets your daily div nuggets podcast part of the lockon network your team every day

Support the show uh you can also leave us five star reviews which we value so so so much helps us out a ton we’d really appreciate a festar review from you on any platform that you choose to listen to us on um Adam MZ is what why

Are you why are you what what what’s up I forgot my signs it’s okay man it’s okay it’s okay it’s G be all right you got a nice Fern in the background that’s that’s the just just accentuate the fern there we go that’s all you got to do um on today’s

Show we’re going to talk about the MVP straw poll we’re going to talk about the nug and Kings rematch tonight in which I have a a very strong take on this game and we’ll start though the nuggets are at the All-Star break uh everyone it’s really funny to me everyone’s like you

Know the mid-season Mark at Allstar and I’m like nope that not not the case not not at all um the nuggets have played now 54 games I know it is crazy man that’s crazy 28 left yeah 28 left they played 54 games so the and and I I will just

Tell you this and I I do every time I say these things they slide so I’m sorry for what I’m about to say because I every time I say this they decide to dip it’s almost like they listen and let off the gas they don’t but it’s like they do the work’s done

You think the work’s done really no one five is not catching them that’s the important thing here is five well I don’t know we’ll see don’t they play five ton they do play play no they play uh they play they play eight tonight well I mean it’s basically the same

Though but yes um they play they are four games up on the Phoenix Suns from the Five Spot they’re gonna be a top four seed they’re gonna have home court in the first round the and I’ll put it this way Randomness and variance and injuries

Luck is going to determine a lot of what happens in the one through four um I don’t think it’s going to come down because of how you have to prep for the playoffs and what March is like in the NBA this is one of my complaints is that

March basketball is so messy the teams with a tough schedule could face teams that have given up on their season or decide not to compete that night the teams with a really um easy schedule could face teams that are suddenly surging for no apparent reason so like

The hard work is done um but I will ask you this as we head the All-Star break what have we learned about the Nuggets what’s the most important thing that you think we can take away from this nugget season so far so I think it doesn’t have anything to

Do with the Nuggets I think the most important thing to take away from the season so far is that this year will be harder I just think there are better teams than there were or more good teams I don’t even know if there’s better teams but there’s more good teams and

More teams that can beat you you know if you’re not at your best I still think Denver’s the best team in the west when they’re at their best but you know since we never see them consistently at that level until the playoffs you have to sit there and wonder and go the Clippers

Look like they will be a meaningful challenge the Timberwolves look like they’d be a meaningful challenge in the first round you can draw a New Orleans or a Sacramento or a Dallas and those are teams are better than what you typically would expect in the first

Round and then on the other side in the Eastern Conference you know you have a team that’s probably going to come out of the East that’s better than the Miami Heat last year so My Big takeaway is just that whatever we can get from the Nugget season so far you just have to

Know that the road is going to be tougher totally agree that the road’s be tougher uh totally agree that the path will be more difficult totally agree that there will probably be times in the series where you think they’re going to lose um I will also their margin for

Error is way less than it was last year you think that’s true I do well you mean not because of them but just because of the teams they’re playing you’re saying okay yeah yeah yeah they faced a wolves team that cat had been back for like a month and they without Jaden McDaniels

And K got hurt and they were did not really know what who they were yet they were still finding that identity um they faced a son’s team that did not have the necessary components did not have a complete team um I’m still kind of skeptical that they have a complete team

But they have more of one this year than they did last year um and Chris Paul and DeAndre got hurt at the end of that series it wouldn’t have changed the outcome but that’s what happened and uh they faced a Lakers team that shouldn’t have been there in the first place so I

Still think I like I don’t want to do the thing where we’re discounting the the teams they played like they smacked them and they were teams that were to that point looking better than they did when they the Nuggets I don’t want to too far this no I could do I could do

Both though I could I could be like yeah they smacked everybody because they were so much better than everybody else um and it’s not but here’s the thing there’s nobody else for them to have played like it’s it’s not like I’m I’m like well they got easy because they

They played this team instead of no they would have they would have trounced the Warriors they would have trounced the Kings they would have trounced the Grizzlies they would have not they would have beaten the snot out of anybody they played and 16 and four proves that right

Um my big takea away from this season beyond what you’re saying which is like it’s going to be harder which is what I’ve you know I’ve been on that my big takeaway is Denver doesn’t Denver plays like a team that Paces itself and only proves things to themselves when they

Want to what I mean by that is there are games when Media or fans will get up for it and maybe the nuggets are like it’s just another game but there are also games like Kobe statue night where the nuggets are like no no we’re winning

This one right the Boston game no no we’re winning this game um and there are almost no games where they have gotten up for it and failed I would say the Sixers game they got beat when they got up for it I think they were game for

That game I think they got I think the coaching the game plan was not good but they’ll learn from that and in general um whenever they’ve had to this team has gotten up for the spot and it’s not that you can you can fall down into a very

Big confirmation bias hole here right where it’s like they got Tred by the Bucks because they didn’t care about that game but also I did not see the effort and performance in that Bucks game they were short-handed too but I did not see the effort and performance

In that buck game that I’ve seen from them when they’ve needed to hit the high notes and so for me their overall resume is not indicative of how good they are with this team in particular you have to single out their performances in the games in which they engage and judge

Them based off of that because they are able and this is a healthy Evolution for them to be able to be where they are to be 36 and 18 heading into the last game before the All-Star break with the fact that I think I can count

On nine and a maybe 10 and a half is the over under for how many games I think that they’ve really pushed themselves in this season yeah I think that’s probably Fair last year you had the comfort of them coming in a row right so you it felt more sustainable because that

Happened over the course of a month long stretch with no interruption this year there have been those little pockets like you mentioned the Celtics games and this or that where they do it and then they have pockets where they look terrible like the Knicks games in the

Last two so the Nuggets they haven’t had that consistent stretch I I will say I do think that unlike last year the final stretch is going to be a little bit more meaningful not just because you have seating that will change you know night to night basically all the way down the

Stretch but also because I do think you want to see certain improvements from pton Watson from Christian Brown from Jamal Murray from Michael Porter like you want to see something from those guys that you haven’t quite seen or something that you’ve seen But sparingly so far you

Probably want to see that before the playoffs whereas last year maybe it didn’t feel that way but I felt like the Nuggets had enough cushion that those things weren’t so urgent yeah I think a lot of this is um your margin for error feels comfortable until it’s not and

What I mean by that is well as long as we’re healthy then we’ll be all right and then it’s like well okay but what what if somebody’s got a bad ankle in game in game three or four right and and the drop off there is dramatic and significant now ironically Jamal’s the

Biggest playoff Riser Reggie next to the starters has been has been lights out this year like Reggie’s been fine next to like joic is so good and the way the Nuggets play around yic is so good and Reggie’s made enough adjustments I don’t think he’s like seamless with his fit next to yoke

But it’s been good enough um but I do think like all these things kind of kind of add up for yeah like your margin for error is less you better hope things go right um but if they do the Nuggets are going to be right back in the in the

Finals and that’s that’s how I feel about this y all right on the other side the MVP straw Hole uh 2.0 is out and guess who’s back back again at the top it’s the Joker man we’ll talk about that up next here on locked on nuggets let’s talk about hungry route

Put in the chat about me uh all right he Nails the interview and they’re like wait are you you’re that guy in the CH oh crap oh no uh Tim bondam straw pole 2.0 came out yesterday Nicole yage does lead the pack for MVP with the um unfortunate injury for embiid which will

Make him ineligible uh SGA is second the vote totals yic gets 69 of the total first place votes nice second he got 25 votes third place he got three sure sure sure uh fourth place three votes uhuh um sheo Alexander is second he got 24 first

Place votes and 54 second place votes um one person did not vote for shilas Alexander at all I would like to speak with this person um and and ask them some questions Giannis is in third he’s got 391 points total to yic is 889 this is a two-man race to close out

Here think that yes it’s yes don’t okay why not I feel like well so I feel like this one was the most everybody had to reset like people had to figured out like oh okay it’s embiid and then everything else and I feel like this was it happens relatively quickly after the

Embiid stuff that I feel like this was the first one where people didn’t really know what what so typically I think you’re right that they follow a path and it kind of whittles down but I kind of feel like this one had the most Randomness to it so I’ll say this um the

Voters I think would obviously love for there to be another option besides the top two let me put that way um they don’t want to give yoke a third because they’re just like yoke really again it just it’s we have fatigue we always have fatigue right yeah um that’s just like a

Thing that’s been proven um and then Shay is so unproven there’s a resistance to him where they’re like yeah but like come on and I’m I am very much not in that camp um but that’s that’s the resistance here where the Gap it’s important to note that the gap between

Those two players is not represented by the number of votes because the voters don’t get together and be like okay I’m gonna vote for Shay and you vote for yic and that way we’ll have it split right it could be extremely close like I on my ballot

Yic and Shay were extremely close but you know that that’s just not how that’s how it goes um what I would also say though is there to me there is not a not a Black Swan I don’t know a gry swan I don’t know what I would call it there’s

Not an event that occur that can occur where they’re going to catch up the Clippers can finish with the number one seed and Kawhi Leonard can come back from this adductor strain that he’s currently dealing with and be awesome if you look if you want they will have the

Voters will have to line up the numbers they will have to be like okay what do these guys look like and you’re going to look at the numbers you’re gonna be like I can’t no like I can’t put kawhai on the level of joic and Shay I can’t do it

Um Giannis is in that conversation Giannis is is producing that much the season the problem that he’s going to run into is any narrative voter is going to be like the story of the season has not been Giannis in the buck the story of the season has been the Bucks have a

Really good record and nobody everyone’s kind of like really like this team’s not that good and so it’s gonna be very he’s been awesome I think Giannis has been incredible I think he’s definitely the third place finisher with Luca that one’s interesting because Luca has both the numbers and if they were to

Finish obscenely strong down the stretch I mean we’re talking it would take like a ridiculous close to the season for that 25 and three like a berserk finish to the season but if they did that Luca does get in that conversation and he can

He can prove me wrong as far as it being a three-man race but those are unlikely circumstances given a lot of what I know about the last month of the season and so um I come out of the and and the win profiles honestly of those teams

Throughout the entire season so what I come out with is I don’t think the Thunder are going to drop off I don’t think the nuggets are going to drop off I don’t think those teams are going to catch up Kawhi Leonard doesn’t have the numbers um Jaylen Brunson doesn’t have

The numbers it’s gonna wind up being yic versus Shay do you feel because you’re somebody that’s in you know in this MVP conversation World quite a bit do you feel like this straw pole has had by far the least splash of any of the straw polles over the last several years yeah

This specific one yeah two people are really this is the thing is like people are just like um I’ll be honest like I I I do I’m this is not like they’re gonna be like well you’re a Nuggets home no I’m like again not a nuggets fan just

Telling you this is a Philadelphia problem Philadelphia ruined this for everyone like this is supposed to be like who’s the best player in the world and like who’s the most impactful and who deserves to be recog and then I know if it’s true but I’ll I’m with it just like Philadelphia

Fans just decided that we’re going to ruin this for everyone because let’s run with this nuggets fans I love this take like man sure got less toxic once Philadelphia was removed well and that’s the thing though is everyone but there’s also another effect which is that no one wants to talk about it

Anymore after last year no one wants to talk about MVP that’s how nasty they made it yeah they well yic fans no I want to hear it like look at the conversation side again I have never SE I’ve seen some really dramatic MVP Seasons there’s been some amazing ones

In which I like I I’ve voted in one of the best I think that there’s ever been 2017 I’ve never seen a campaign just against a guy just like okay we can all agree that mvp is a tough thing to decide but not this guy I’ve never seen

It and and that honestly that that turned a lot of people off because I just think remember was like I don’t want to be involved in this any you know if your media after last year like yoke is leading in the MVP straw pole but like I think everybody’s like yeah I

Guess it’s yic I don’t really want to say that because I don’t want to deal with the ramifications of it because of how they frame the conversation it is it is funny man this straw pole dropped yesterday and it’s already buried on ESPN like it’s already well below the

Fold if you go on espn.com so it and that tells me like they’ll keep the things on top when they’re performing well like hey this is our big story and in every straw poll you know they do three a year every straw poll for the last several years that’s been a week’s

Worth of content it’s like it comes out on a Monday and that gives you your shows from Monday Tuesday Wednesday on ESPN it just feels like people have moved on from this conversation and I I do wonder I think you might be right this is a classic NBA problem Matt they

Hit that short-term bump of like wow we really created a controversy here but the long-term ramification is Everyone likes it less yes it’s a small little bump and a huge dive and look like the you know we had the conversation and it was like the analytics leaning folks the

Analysts were very much like in yol’s corner for years because they were like look at what this guy does look at the production and the impact look at how good they are when he when he plays um and then you had embiid who goes on Instagram and clowns on Andre

Drummond and does all this stuff and does all these interviews about how much he doesn’t want to win MVP but you know and like there was stuff to do there you can’t go on first take and no one knows Shay yeah um Malik says Shay has never

Won a playoff series are we really giving him MVP it’s a regular season award it feels like Shay needs way his turn like everyone else Malik that’s insane okay last year last year I was talking about how stupid it was the idea that yoke can’t win a

Third MVP because he never won a championship because he’ never won a championship when they had a very real chance to win a win a champion to win a championship last year if you’re gonna use the the playoff argument Shay has a very good chance of winning in the first

Round doesn’t mean it’ll happen there they’re very inexperienced but like this Thunder team is not just like a rollover this thunder team’s really also here’s the thing that we can’t do that we just talked about this regular season no longer mattering because all that matters is the playoffs so if we’re

Going to make these regular season awards actually dependent on the playoffs like what are we doing with it the regular we just should simulate the regular season every year just just avoid ourselves the trouble simulate the MVP simulate the games because it doesn’t matter and nothing matters um I

Love your nihilism turn um or we play the playoffs and then award the regular season an MVP based on the playoffs that’s that’s how we’ll do it so uh I will for transparency I voted shade number one I was asked to participate in the poll I have Shay number one and yoke

Number two um for those that know me like the the whole like I prefer my MVPs to play defense was garbage one because yo because embiid still gets torn up and drop and whenever he plays drop coverage against guards that can torch him he’s just really good at the coverage that he

Plays he was awesome this year he was really great defensively last year I didn’t really think he was um I think yoke has been amazing this year I think yoke is very much worth worthy of the MVP as he is every SE single season sheay Alexander by the metrics

That I value as well as my eye test as well as how I feel about his end to- end performance he is not the guy that takes the toughest defensive assignment but he makes so many defensive plays a game you don’t think yoke does I think yoke makes

A lot I don’t think yoke doesn’t make him I think Shay makes that many more and so Shay to me is the best to end player in the NBA this season I think it’s close I don’t have any problem with the Yol vote but I would lean toward sh

And I’ll say this the last the last two players to lead the straw poll and straw poll number two have not won number two is one I think sh y Alexander uh will win the MVP this season yeah it’ll be interesting to see honestly just to kind

Of follow it and see what the does this conversation heat up does it you knowes does it lost all its luster does it regain some luster I’m curious I I also I have some bad news um he’s number one and Yol seems to to I don’t think he

Pays attention to it but I think somebody’s going to be like hey by the way you’re number one in the MVP poll he’s like ah those are his stats plummeting into the Earth get ready for four shots from Nicole yic tonight versus the Kings which by the way that’s our matchup

Tonight we’ll talk about that matchup and whether the Nuggets can get revenge on the Kings uh maybe without Jamaal Murray and definitely without kcp on the other side when we return on locked on nuggets what say about eBay Motors passion drive and patience what brings home the winning trophy is also what

Joining us making this party today on a Wednesday World’s Finest coming at you uh Swip will be with you tomorrow on Thursday I’m at Allstar this weekend so I’m going to try I will uh try and catch uh yoke at All-Star availability and then um I’ll talk about the vibe that

Yoke carries on Friday for the show uh all right Adam they faced the Kings tonight in the last game before the All-Star Break um Kings obviously TR them on the the back toback last weekend Jamal is let’s as questionable for this game with tiia um oh crap it’s hate that injury scary

One bilateral tibia inflammation okay um which actually that is slightly scary because like you worry about like a stress pressure uh jeez kcp is questionable with Wright hamstring and Tenon and tendinosis um I will bet that Casp does not play came back from the injury um

Had the ankle then pulled up nope like you just don’t mess with it like there’s no reason for him to play in this game kcp will not play um by the way the more common I just looked this up but I can’t believe I haven’t looked this up before

But the most common term for this injury is shinsplints shinin so there you go um so Jamal’s probably U I would say Jamal’s probably 5050 if he has a really good warmup and feels good he’ll probably play but I would also not be surprised if he

Doesn’t because you know you get him an extra three days yeah you know before the allstar break uh I will say this they’re gonna smash him tonight they’re gonna smash really they’re gonna smash him they’re gonna beat the snot out of this team all right wow I love how you

Never have uh you know your takes are always so certain the human element there’s no room there’s no Mar they’re just gonna smack them I I save them I save the really strong ones for when like do have that kind of really strong feeling because the rest of my life is very much

Like I don’t know man everything’s probabilities we’re all going to die in the heat death of the universe prepare for the water wars nothing matters like that’s the rest of my life and so like in this case I’m very much just like kings are on a back-to-back emotional

Let down game after almost getting that win versus the Suns nobody plays well in altitude last game for the All-Star break nuggets are Rock Solid at home nuggets are Rock Solid after they lose nuggets are Rock Solid after they lose to a specific Al in the previous matchup

Versus the team when they play them at home uh they’re going to they’re they’re going to finish strong here they’re going to absolutely beat the snot out of the Kings tonight man that feels bold to me I don’t know if I I necessarily feel that confident in tonight’s game I think it’s

Going to be a slog Denver just being short-handed and they don’t look like a team to me at least in the last two games that was that had that gear in them they look like a team that needs this break and needs to survive so can

They win yes but it would feel to me more like a survival win what I think for tonight that’s most interesting to me if you don’t get Jamal and you don’t get kcp that’s your starting back court it’s easy to replace the Jamal you’re just going to go with Reggie Jackson

Michael Malone has been going to Justin holiday here and I would hate that if that happened tonight for this reason if there is anything good that can come out a game where you don’t have your starting back court like what can you get outside of just a win I would love

To see what Christian Brown and pton Watson look like against the Aon Fox that’s a very tough matchup and when you get to the playoffs who by the way you might end up playing the Sacramento Kings in the first round it’s very good chance that you you draw them wouldn’t

You like to know if those guys are capable of it I mean you’re not going to play just in holiday so I know the idea of we want to keep the bench the same although why would you want to keep the bench the same it’s not like it’s gating

Traction but I would love to see like all right give me a lot of Christian Brown on Darren Fox a lot of pton Watson because even if they get torched tonight and it cost you a a win I think it would be a good experience for them a good

Test for them and you probably learn something about what that would look like and where your weaknesses are yeah uh I agree I think it’s better to like I would love to to have a game where you you put Christian in the starting lineup and and you go the

Opposite way of instead of peeling back on your trust in him be like we’re gonna give you this opportunity kid yeah go take it right um I think that there’s there’s probably a role for Justin holiday in certain Series in the in the playoff depending on who they face and

How things are going but it never needs to be your default it needs to be like a game three hey let’s get holiday some minutes here um they holiday hasn’t played well lately totally understand that that’s been the case he played well early numbers have been fine in terms of

The on offs with him the season um but I totally agree with you that it’s better to give pton Watson I think especially CB an opportunity in this kind of matchup um you you’re gonna need those guys like you play Phoenix there’s so many players that need defended that

You’re gonna need those guys for heavy minutes there are series out there where those guys are goingon to be needed and so I just would like to give them a stress test say hey it’s 30 minutes tonight for both of you and you’re guarding dear and fox and Malik Monk and

Guys who are really hard to guard yeah that’s the actually the other thing is like I actually think you can survive Fox you need to make sure you don’t let Malik monk have a huge game Mal is like he will he will have stretches where he

Puts up these he he puts these stretches where he makes big play after big play offensively it’s like massive three driving bucket you know cutting cutting dunk like he’s there Michael Porter in that we always say when Michael Porter has a porter quarter the Nuggets usually

Win that quarter by 10 that’s Malik monk when he has a big quarter usually the Kings won the quarter by a lot yeah 100% um by the way I have a I have a I have a can I jump out of the Kings talk for sure one more take all right so I’m

Watching this thing about a football game that was played on Sunday and this individual this individual decided to say that the other quarterback was a quote regular quarterback um and we’re going to show that he’s a regular quarterback and like the other team did not hear this so it didn’t really impact

Things I also watched this thing of it was a clip from Kevin Garnett’s rookie year and he was playing Michael Jordan and um I can’t remember who the guy that he was that was like their main scorer but like he was he was playing well and they were

Beating the the Bulls and kg decided to talk to him and the Veteran’s like no and then kg’s like no I don’t care he’s like kg’s like I double down and then all of a sudden I like he’s like I felt it and like Mike starts doing that

He puts where he put his hands on his hips like the like all those photos of Jordan like leaning over legs locked like used to and then Jordan scored 18 in the fourth quarter and they blew them out by 20 it was a two-point game and it went to 25 my point

Here is that with these great teams and these great players I will tell you that if you want one of the reasons that you should have confidence despite all this malaise and all these questions about they’re not as good as last year this didn’t happen last year there will come

A point in these playoffs when some team decides that they’re going to run down yoke some team down they’re going to talk they’re going to talk trash you think so yeah they’re going to say something in the media and on the court and they’re going to poke the bear like

Marcus Morris did in the Clipper series nobody poked the bear last year and a lot of that has to do with I think Phoenix would have but they weren’t up and Phoenix is a team that pokes the bear when they’re leading um The Wolves were not going to do that they

Understood how tough it is I think they’re pretty well established and actually I actually can ACC credit the Lakers because like LeBron I think was very much like do nope that’s not how we operate like do not do that um one of the teams that they face this year will

Will poke the bear and then they will they’ll get the Clause I’d love to see yol’s response to it I mean you know he he seems to be able to handle those but it’d be fun to to see a moment in the playoffs I’m like have we had that have

We had one of those in the playoffs I mean I guess Dwight Howard kind of poked the bear it’s it just goes back to bubble and Marcus Morris that’s it it’s when Marcus was getting in Paul map’s face yeah but that was like more on Milsap than it was on y

Talked about that like that was like a moment like and I think there was a thing of like Paul you’re messing with Paul like of all people like the number like total Pro does everything the right way and you’re gonna run down Paul and so and

When milap stepped up to him it was huge so um whether it’s the Warriors or whoever else like there will come that moment I’m like firing off the predictions today just like get them off man get your get them off I got another one nuggets are not going to finish top

Two how about that um all right I like like that one as much all right it’s gonna do it for lock on nugget thanks for joining us appreciate you guys being with us make sure to check out uh the show tomorrow with swipa you can catch

You guys again next time on lock on nuggets

Matt Moore and Adam Mares assess the Nuggets at the All-Star break. Denver is in a good position at the break, but it’s clear the run to the repeat will be more difficult than last year. We talk about why the margin for error is smaller but why Denver is still built for the challenge. Nikola Jokic leads the second ESPN straw poll, but will he win his third MVP? Matt and Adam disagree on it being a two-man race. The Nuggets face the Kings in a revenge spot, but they might be short-handed. Matt and Adam have very different ideas about what kind of game it will be. Plus, Matt predicts someone will make the mistake of poking the bear.

  1. One of the reasons Jokic deserves the MVP is the rest of the team has been bad. Jamal missed 20 games and when he has played he’s been inconsistent. MPJ and AG are having down years. KCP playing great D but O been down. Bench has been bad. Yet they are a game out of first in a very strong WC.

  2. Not sure what Matt is talkin about! No way the work is over! There’s not a team in the top 8 that couldn’t go on a crazy run and move into a top 4 seed, even the top seed! Nuggets need to stay focused this next month, take care of business and secure a top 2 seed.

  3. Nuggets have 28 games left, 12 of which are against sub .500 teams. (2 of which are Utah) Nuggs have done really well against such opponents, so say we win 10 of those games, that puts us at 46 wins. A 10-6 record in the remaining 16 games against quality opponents gives the 56 W’s on the season….Seems very “doable” to me.

  4. I have no clue why the bald guy dislikes the nuggets so much. He thinks he’s the smartest dude in the room trying to prove why the nuggets arnt as good as people think or jokic isn’t as good as people think. He did this all last year during the playoff run and leading up to the postseason with all these advanced stats as to why the nuggets are fools gold. He complains about having to actually go to the game bc he does t like to drive 😢. I just get so sick of this dude openly not liking a job that tons of people would do for free. Bro go cover another team. The guy is such a downer like most of the time on this pod. Like why? People come here for nuggets content bc we are fans. I don’t want to be explain why SGA is better than jokic if you squint and look at this metric of how people in first at this point if the season don’t win. There’s a reason why when swipa or Adam do the show alone they get more views. Try to actually support the team instead of thinking of dumb barley relevant info to make us doubt one of the best basketball players to ever live.

  5. I dislike the idea that they choose games to try in. Nikola played well in both games, and mostly everyone else decided not to participate? They are aware of how tight the standings are. Also, it is a disservice to the fans and their contracts to only “try” when they want to. Not saying treat every game like a play off game, but look like a competent team and provide a somewhat competitive game

  6. Interesting take by Matt, regarding Nuggets always winning games they really care about winning (at Lakers, at Boston). But without two starters such as Murray and KCP right now, they aren’t winning anything. Need 100% health in April, May, and June (if they get that far). Almost zero margin for error.

  7. I don't care about the MVP thing. Jokic got it twice, might get some more, but who cares?
    What's important is TITLES. WINS.

One thing irked me during this conversation – the notion that "nuggets turn it up when they think it matters". (paraphrase, but accurate I think).
There's a fundamental diff between the "legacy" nuggets fans and the "bandwagon crowd" that came in following Jokic (I'm guessing mostly Serbs).

    So what's the diff?
"Legacy" fans are not used to winning. They're used to SC "nugglife". And their natural instinct is to justify/rationalize/accept failures. Now, that's even easier since they "got one".
And since winning is so new to them – they can't accept it as the NORM. For them – this was an outlier, nice one, but … back to their daily life. As it's something they feel comfortable with.
And they will defend that mediocrity and low expectations with everything they have.

OTOH – the "new" fans are different. Serbs especially. THEY EXPECT WINNING. THEY DEMAND IT.

And if they see someone "pacing themselves" or "choosing when to turn it up" or faking and "taking it easy" (that causes embarrassing losses) – they are pissed off.

As that's not SPORTS. That's diet management. NOT SPORT.

That's why Jokic ALWAYS plays, that's why he's ALWAYS on "on mode".

And that's why we (the "bandwagon crowd") CAN'T STAND Jamallah Murray.
That bi*ch has no pride. Just endless, never ending excuses, stories, and all sorts of weak BS.

That's why we don't appreciate FO/Ownership's inactivity, cheapness and general low self-esteem.

  8. Real talk, the MVP is for the fans not the player, really.

Jokic has directly stated he doesnt want it.

The Nuggets are playing to prep for the playoffs not dominate the regular season.

Its not even a fun award to win nowadays.

Remembering how much toxicity and acrimony the MVP created last year for us. Is the MVP for Jokic something we want to pursue as a franchise?

On balance i would say no.

  9. Sorry Matt Moore but you voting Shaiaiai over jokic just shows you how narrative drives the nba. Clearly jokic is the mvp of the league, but your bored and Shai “fits the criteria for mvp” so you gotta vote different. The OKC team is loaded and Shai is a big part but not essential like jokic. Chet and j Williams can both easily be star players. Jokic got guys that he has to set up but will have disappointing nights shooting terribly and he has to go out and carry the scoring, rebounding and assisting load. Without jokic, this nuggets team is a skeleton.

  10. I think there will be a few voters that are gonna go with Jokic cause they regret not giving it to him last year when he should have won it. But if okc gets the one seed, then yeah, they’ll easily go SGA.

  11. @Matt Moore I understand the argument you make at 19:30 that it’s unfair to penalize Shai for the narrative that he’s too new and hasn’t won anything… but we lost that argument last year. Narrative won out last year with Embiid stealing Jokic’s third straight. It was ugly, based on a race narrative and that he hadn’t won the finals yet. As a nuggets fan, I’m now of the mindset what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Jokic is owed at this point. Shai can wait his turn. That bum Embiid can wait until he wins a finals for further consideration. This is Jokic’s time.
