Never get over this. I know Kyries is better, but there’s something about watching someone your team drafted become a star

  2. Kball4177

This should squash the Cuban/Mavs narrative that “Brunson wasn’t ever coming back”. The Mavs managed to fumble him away 3 different times within the span of a year. Cuban going from “We can pay him more than anybody” to basically ghosting him because they didn’t think the Knicks could clear enough space for him is unforgivable. As usual, the Mavs overplayed their hand.

  3. FredAgain27

I don’t ever want to hear people defending Cuban on this. Brunson just confirmed he would’ve signed that deal

  4. TheDeadman95

Yet people here will stay in denial and act like Cuban had no chance of keeping him.

They wouldn’t extend him even after he started breaking out that season because they were shopping him around and only tried to do it after the deadline, at which point was basically an insult. That was always clear to anyone not deluded by homerism, and now you hear it from the man himself.

Also, confirmation that the bastard straight up lied on TV when he said that Brunson will stay cause they can offer him the most lmao

  5. sercialinho

So it *was* just as bad as we thought. Or, perhaps, worse. If he was still up for signing 55/4 ~1/3 of the season in, that’s malpractice by the FO.

  6. K1ngCrimsn

I mean what did y’all expect from Cuban? If it wasn’t for Suns/Kings/Hawks stupidity we would be the Wizards of the western conference with WCJ as our franchise player

  7. mylanguage

Brunson is pretty clear here – and doesn’t seem at all like the type to make stuff up. Mavs missed on this one badly.

  8. HoneyIShrunkMyNads

Losing Brunson made me not want to follow the mavs for a while. Last year was probably the lowest point in my entire 20 year fandom in terms of vibes.

I’m glad nico has been able to salvage shit but losin Brunson will forever hurt

  9. CheetahSperm18

Hopefully Mark finally learned his lesson and locks up Lively

  10. dmr196one

You all immediately jump to believe the coward and call Cuban a liar. Cuban has been telling the same story all along. Daddy’s boy just finally got his story straight. Haven’t you noticed the runt never plays against us? One game I think. Not that it matters to anyone else, but I will never root for him or any team he plays on.

  11. EmrysMyrdin

People should have been fired for that incompetence.

  12. I remember Mavs fans being downvoted or telling anyone who said that the mavs fucked up this situation to get over it and move on cause we never had a chance anyways. As if we don’t have a long history or Mark Cuban fucking up offseason moves and re signing key players like Nash and now Brunson. I don’t understand how some sports fans can only be positive about their team and not be critical in anyway and if you’re not we’re fake l/bad fans fuck outta here , same with the cowboys in this town.

  13. Strictly from an asset perspective, Brunson on that contract would’ve been one of the most valuable assets in the league.

I like Josh Green and some of these other young guys but they’ve never shown anything close to what Brunson was doing at that time with Mavs.

I hear people saying we should pay Jaden Hardy whatever we have too but he isn’t even half the player Brunson was with the Mavs.

    Colossal blunder.

  14. In the end it worked for both sides, but man is this painful to listen to

Imagine having brunson for 4/55. Would have been deal of the century for the mavs

  15. Afraid-Department-35

This isn’t new, but good to hear it from Brunson though to confirm those reports. The FO didn’t think Brunson was the #2 guy around January of that year which was extension time, and tbh he never really got to show how good he really was as a solo unit until Luka got injured and then the playoffs. So to the FO it made sense to shop him before the trade deadline to get a possible upgrade with how they were building the roster. The FO wasn’t interested in developing players (ie the KP, CEood and some of the other nonsense they did) they wanted someone ready to go for a postseason run without knowing Brunson would blowup in the playoffs But clearly no other team wanted him for whatever asking price Dallas was offering. And that right there is where it fell apart and he was gone.

It is FO malpractice but I can see their thought process throughout this as misguided as it seemed.

  16. Look, Brunson played like SHIT vs the clippers when we blew the 2-0 lead. Nobody was screaming for the Mavs to extend him!!! This all happened because of how Donnie set up his contract, Brunson 100% should’ve been RFA. Everything else makes sense how it unfolded. He had family ties there and by the time Dallas offered a contract he already had outplayed it. Just bad luck. I blame Donnie

  17. d357r0y3r

This is worse than I thought.

It sounds like, despite all that the media said about Brunson wanting the spotlight for himself, it just came down to Cuban being cheap.

  18. ThatsAScam

But we knew we didn’t sign him with an extension? Most people mean by the end of the season, which he have not touched at all and if anything seems like he was decisive about moving to NY

  19. TheChosenOne311

This is such a crock of shit. Even if you believe everything he’s saying (which you shouldn’t), he’s essentially saying that he was originally ok with signing an extension before the deadline, and decided he didn’t want to sign an extension when we offered it like 2 weeks later
.uh huh
convenient

He doesn’t mention his dad one single time. He doesn’t mention the Knicks and his godfather being at our playoff games. He doesn’t mention the Knicks hiring his dad right after the season.

    Btw
did you guys know that Jalen was committed to going to Temple University (his dad’s Alma mater) with his dad signed on as an assistant coach, and then withdrew his commitment right before the signing window closed? Wanna know what changed? His dad got busted for getting his DeShaun Watson on, and Temple removed him from their staff
so Jalen committed to Nova, at his dad’s behest (per usual).

Rick Brunson calls the shots for his son. That pattern has held true throughout Jalen’s entire career. They will say whatever they need to in order to keep the positive press in their favor.

  20. I’m not disputing anything else but let’s not forget Brunson took autographs from the whole team after his last game here.

  21. Flimsy-Trust-2821

Why does it matter now ? Some of you need to let go of this already. Mavs FO fucked it up big but you cannot go back and fix it.

You get so heated from this and it’s not like the Knicks’ and his father didn’t whisper in his years beautiful things on what to do.

  22. AshyCheekss

I cannot wait for the season to start tomorrow.

Fucking media is just shit smearing the association since the ASG and we’re catching strays off some OLD ASS NEWS
.

  23. Healthy_Ad5938

Brunson was barely worth 4 – 55 in the offseason before that year (bare in mind that he had only played for asshole coach Carlisle at that time). He was worth it after January, but as he said, he played his way above that. He wasn’t worth 4 – 125 until that Jazz series, and by then, everybody knew that. So, it is what it is. The Knicks were investigated for and foul guilty of tampering, so don’t forget that did happen to some extent.

But ya, my point stands, he wasn’t worth 4 – 55 when Kidd came in. I personally think Rick over stayed his welcome the last 3-4 years here, and reports about his relationship with players and disinterest in developing JB suggest I’m right about that.

Good for JB, but fuck the Knicks.

  24. pancakesontheweekend

I don’t care. The Mavs have Kyrie now and he’s better. Not sure why this sub is still stuck in the past.

  25. BrandingtheMavericks

So tired of this dude and people crying about losing him. We got Kyrie, a better player and more compatible with Luka than Brunson will ever and would ever be.

  26. grusilag9

This supposed “controversy” has been so thoroughly settled. Anyone with a brain and basic information about the matter knows that the Mavs/Cuban screwed up multiple times. The ONLY place where this is still a topic of debate is in this sub where you have multiple Cuban sycophants in complete denial about what happened.

  27. HispanicAtTehDisco

even if you assume everything he said is true this is missing some major context like the fact that the knicks quite literally got hit for tampering so it wasn’t as much “the bright lights calling” as “my daddy told me to come here” AND the fact that when he wanted that original contract he was not at all the player he was by the end of his time in dallas much less the dude who he is in new york.

literally the last playoff series before he wanted that new contract was him averaging 8 vs the clippers and getting played off the court at every game.

y’all can’t have it both ways, every season it’s “wow luka had no help” and that was including brunson but now yall are acting like he was putting up fucking steve nash numbers when he left

  28. JBeanDelphiki

Whatever it happened, I don’t wanna think about it anymore. So fucking sick of this shit. can’t wait until the games start back again.

  29. I’m not discrediting this entirely, but a player saying something like this is not proof either way, especially when the player saying it paints himself in better light and shifts all blame on to a front office that already has negativity around it.

I’d wager a guess that it is correct that we didn’t offer the deal to keep our trade options open, but I also don’t believe for a second Brunson would have signed this contract offer.

Look, Donnie Nelson and Cuban made plenty of blunders, but I really think the Brunson narrative is a bit incorrect due to the PR machine that Leon Rose and Rick Brunson spun up. If you just think about it logically, Rose comes from CAA which as an agency, is literally the biggest power player in all of sports and the agency also reps a lot of the talking heads at ESPN, Fox, etc. The narrative spin on it has always favored Brunson and the one time Cuban pushed back on it, the same media heads all piled on Cuban. Yes, we fucked up, but let’s not pretend that there wasn’t some sort of string pulling done by Leon Rose and Rick Brunson.

Mavs could win a chip this year and yall will still be talking about this sh*t, good lord. Until around April of 2022, JB was playing subpar. Obviously he played very well in the playoffs and felt like he could be the focal point on another team and left.
