Big game we’ll talk about the Mavs in a playoff type atmosphere I was here I’m still here in the building feeling what it felt like in here and the new maps PJ Washington Daniel Gafford showed us real things honestly Derrick Lively showed me some things in this game as well in a

Playoff type atmosphere so we’ll talk about that we’ll obviously talk about the de the defense that helped the Mavs get this win PJ Washington and Maxi kba played a big role in that obviously and then slightly we got to start here oh my gosh we got to start with Luca and Kyrie

Combined for 70 points an insane performance it felt like a real pedestrian Luca game but then I look up and he has 21 points at the half yeah he finishes with 41 points an amazing number Dirk was in the building today nine rebounds 11 assists four steals for

Luca as well he was just abs absolutely incredible he slices and dices like you said you held up the butter knife he sliced through this Sun’s defense and honestly I people were asking me about oh what centers are you worried about in the west and I kept going down the list

And nurkic was one of them I got to and I said LCA just destroys him yeah and he barely could play in the second half I don’t even I didn’t even see how many minutes he ended up playing in the second half but he barely played yeah no

This was a 4 33 four minutes 33 seconds nage blade yeah Luca is going to pick apart any of these any of these Sinners who can’t hang off hit we’ve already seen this happen in the playoffs like we witnessed it firsthand but uh man what a performance from I’m telling you guys

Man it’s it’s we might be in the middle of something here something really special because I just I really do think if this as the season close out here you made you did an episode last night I did a video today on my channel I really think like this this wasn’t like me

Saying it I you were saying Luca should win I was saying Luca is going to win MVP I I think that this is I I I do I really do I think we didn’t talk to each other about those episodes by the way both Luka MVP episode last night didn’t

Talk to each other about it and uh yeah I’m telling people like today I was talking about dropping and people like no no dude you’re gonna Jinx you’re gonna Jinx big Sons game time I was like I don’t care it’s written I saw it in a vision in a

Dream and this was the type of moment I was talking about on my my show yesterday where I said Luca should win MVP because he’s going to have these opportunities National TV game TNT rivalry playoff race you know him going off points in this one hit some clutch

Shots defense was solid in this game I felt like from Luca like that’s something that a national audience does not that that we know you and I know listening and and watching this like you know that Luca’s defense has been solid All Season that he’s taken a step up

That this way he’s not a STI on defense in the way that he probably was last year and was not very good he’s taking a step up this season and so you saw all that and that was all on display in this game and so this is honestly this one

You’ve got a Celtics game coming up on national TV you’ve got a Thunder game game I think you’ve got a Nuggets game all on national TV where you’ve got this opportunity for Luca to take steps forward and like win that mvp it’s right there for him like there’s no one else

That’s really taken a choke hold of it especially with embiid out and he’s not going to play enough games to get there and so I mean it’s right there for Luca to take it’s not the most important thing obviously we’ll talk about this team and all that but Luca MVP like this

Is one of those games that kickstarts a campaign for him this is like I don’t know like a like for a politician like a really good rally you know like a really good rally where like they have a viral moment where something happens where you know the candidate will say something

And all of a sudden like everybody gets behind it I don’t know I don’t want to name one because I don’t who that who was that guy you remember that guy uh oh oh that now that guy that was the opposite the one the opposite back when when you used to make

A weird noise at a rally and you almost get kicked out of politics that guy his campaign ended right there but yeah but yeah no this is one where it kick starts a campaign for Luca yeah and I mean you know it kind of goes hand inand because it it isn’t the

Most important thing for the Mavericks obviously but Luca winning MVP would mean that the Mavericks are winning enough games to get into yes the top five I’d have to say maybe even the top four and man you know matchups like this where if you don’t have that real elite

Point of attack Defender which the Suns don’t really have I mean kogi’s is good in that role but you know Devon Booker’s okay from time to time KD’s is a good Defender but he’s not like guarding Luca every time down the floor no he’s gonna slice and dice you and pick you apart

Because you have to help you do not feel anywhere near comfortable enough leaving guys on an island against him if they’re not like legit real good Defenders and he I mean I mean my God it was a master class in the second half especially just every every decision he made and he got

You know he starting the third quarter he got red hot and he he threw up some heat checks which is completely fine because some of the shots he was hitting were absurd but um outside of that every decision he made was just incredible let do an open three or great look for

Himself I mean I mean he’s just remarkable the Suns tried to put speaking of Politics the Suns tried to put put mini Ted Cruz Grayson Allen Grayson Grayson Allen on him he just had no shot like and yeah they did they didn’t try the double teams as as much

They did it a little bit in the first half but yeah Luca can just slice and dice because they’re gonna they’re gonna allow Luca to Luca to get what he can himself it’s kind of like what the Clippers used to do they’re going to try to take away the passes they’re going to

Try to take away the extra stuff and then they’ll just leave one guy open it was Derrick Jones Jr sometimes it was PJ Washington sometimes Maxi kba sometimes and they’ll do that like late help where they’ll run their run over and Luka has to make a split second decision where he

Has to either you know take a shot or kick over and like you said he just made all the right decisions I mean that just just what happened in this game 41 points for him did finish with 11 assist he’s he’s that guy he’s he’s him yeah at

This point I mean Booker played such a good game I’m annoyed how good Booker is like as somebody that cares about the Mavericks and covers this team like it’s just annoying how good Devon Booker has become and luuka completely outplayed him I don’t think it’s annoying I think

It’s good I’ve said this before though no I’m I think it’s good for the r it’s it’s good for the yeah good good for the Rivalry but like I’d rather destroy them I mean this game like Deon Booker was great the some of the shot making in

This game for both teams was just absurd it it was some great basketball yeah uh Alvin Gentry was sitting in front of me former NBA coach and now uh in scouting and he was like why are they even calling plays for these guys just let these four guys ISO

And do whatever they want at this point I was like yeah you could call you could call it any one of their numbers and it would be better than probably have you seen that stat going around where they uh they looked up I don’t know if it was

Basketball index or somebody was looking up the most efficient play for every single team in the league yeah luk ISO was it was like a pick and roll with somebody so like Steph Draymond pick and roll that was still the most efficient one it’s you know there’s a bunch of

Different things where you go oh yeah obviously that’s an efficient play and for the Mavericks it was a Luca donic ISO yeah no one there’s no one else I don’t think that there was like the iso is the most efficient play for that team officient like an ISO being efficient is wild if

You think about that because that’s just him with the ball and only him with the ball and he he scores or attempts and that’s still the most efficient thing for the Mavericks more than a a Luca Lively pick and roll more than a Luca Gafford or you know a Tim catch and

Shoot you know like anything Luca isoing he’s just he’s that guy and because he’s that guy you’ve seen you’ve probably seen at this point you know Tim legler put the Mavericks in his contenders like top four contenders in in the west I’ve talked to a lot of people at All-Star

And and you know here today and they’re all like you know what the Mavs they got Luca and Kyrie you can kind of do anything in the playoffs like anything can happen as long as you have that guy and a game like this is why he put it on

Full display today yeah that’s we’ve been saying it on the show too even in the rough Parts it’s like this team could go on a run like they are capable of it and uh I’m I’m sure we’re about yeah I’m looking at the thing right now

We are about to talk about it but this defense Yeah spearheaded by PJ Washington is starting to get really interesting really interesting the Mavs won this game on their defense we’ll tell you how we’ll tell you how good the PJ Washington Maxi combo is talk about all that and more coming

I’ll tell we’ll tell the story one day on here uh all right slightly let’s talk about this defense you alluded to it earlier I think the Mavericks did win this game on the back of their defense in the end the sun scored 33 points in the first quarter 30 in the second

Second so 63 in the first half which is you know a normal NBA game right now 28 points in the third and 22 in the fourth the Mavs defense put clamps Down Kevin Durant does not has not scored a lot of points against the Mavs this season uh

But he was held to just what 24 points uh in this one 23 points he had five turnovers as well only nine of 22 from the field and you’ve got to give credit to PJ Washington his his offense has kind of been you know here and there and

Hasn’t necessarily been as the most consistent thing but his defense has been awesome and you look at it in a game like this you look at how he defended Kevin Durant I mean it was just awesome and it’s something that the Mavericks just desperately needed yeah

Man I’m uh I wouldn’t say well I guess maybe I did unell his defense a little bit because I was saying I don’t know if he can like single-handedly change your defense right he can help you out and you know you can have some good defensive rotations but just plugging

Him in is not going to save your defense he’s been pretty damn good so far and he’s guarded the other team’s best player every single game that the Mavs have played in Pretty pretty much yes and uh he’s he’s been pretty good I’m very very surprised and pleased with his

Defensive stuff and offensive stuff will come you know I’m I’m not worried about that really at all but yeah defensively man it just it allows the Mavericks to do a lot of things the thing about it is he didn’t come in and change the Mavs

Defense but what he did was like he like the Mavs defense was a boat like a roo that had holes in it and he was just the biggest cork that F that fit the biggest hole you know what I mean like he allowed the Mavs to do the things they

Want to do yes right right where You’ hope Grant Williams would would would have been that you had Dori infiny Smith and and Bullock to kind of be that and then Bullock you know fell off you hoped Josh Green would would have grown into that and he has to an extent you hope

Derrik Jones Jr would be that but PJ’s been better than all those guys safe maybe Dorian who got traded for Kyrie but like he’s been better than all of them at this just moving his feet the 72 wingspan uh his ability to rebound too that that’s been really helpful it’s

It’s just it’s helped a lot and then Maxi being good too like add on to the fact that Maxi has has arisen he has risen like it feels like he’s come back from the dead after that toe injury and he’s been really good too and the two of

Them together you can close games with him and all of a sudden yeah you know you mentioned it’s hard to it’s hard to see like how one player would change the map’s defense but you allow it allows you to play that smaller Ball lineup with maxi at the five and you don’t get

Destroyed because you’ve got a bigger Wing that can guard bigger guys switch on to anybody basically and like that kind of a Swiss army knife again with the knife references but that kind of a Swiss army knife is just like was so needed by the Mavs yeah and it’s like

They they could just they have so many different ways that they can approach a game now defensively after the two trades where the Suns go small which has been really good for them and because like we said earlier uh nurkic was just getting eaten alive so they go small

With KD at to five that’s a really tough lineup the Mavericks can answer that with a small ball lineup of their own of Maxi and PJ and I mean they’re switching on every screen you know uh they’re hedging and their their blitzing was incredible the rotations were really good just throwing actually like

Doubling a guy like KD and then throwing length at him too not just not just sending a double but sending Maxi and PJ Washington at him two lengthy guys who can really disrupt what he’s got going on uh to the best of their ability because Katie’s one of the most

Unguardable players to ever do it but yeah it’s pretty exciting because you know I got to give kid some props I thought he did pretty good with the rotations tonight and with with how he decided to tackle the big situation and who got the most minutes and yes got

Give him some props man kid kid this season honestly has made the made you know the best decisions I not not of all like always he hasn’t 100% on making this he’s made the best best coaching season ever hold on The Vibes aren’t The Vibes aren’t that good no aren’t that

Good Nick just said this is the best coaching season ever let me let me start over let me let me start over for the most part I think kid has pulled the right levers with the rotations and the players right Grant Williams wasn’t working he pulls him out of the starting

Lineup he totally could have just kept Grant Williams and stuck there with him uh you know Derrick Jones Jr had been playing really well in starting and then you know they make the trades and all of a sudden Josh Green is back inserted into the starting lineup and and he

Sticks with him Lively and Gafford and Maxi and I think he’s pulled the right levers with those guys and like played the right guys in the right situations so far like I I think you’re completely right uh you mentioned Lively he played just under 16 minutes he started in this

Game Gafford ended up with 17 minutes and then Maxi played just under 26 minutes and that’s kind of how I thought it would be because I thought nurk would get played off the floor and I thought that uh you know Mavs would still want to play Maxi and play that small ball

Unit and they’re able to and that unit did really well for them yeah and just the flexibility it provides because even you know look at live Lan gafford’s minutes this really wasn’t Lively game nkit is a beefier center who plays really physically and Gafford I think

Was a little more suited for that so just having that you know that option you can go to Off the Bench now is incredible it’s just really funny that like the the the way that the like really smart National media members talk about kid in the Mavericks this year

Compared to ma Mavs fans has just been hilarious because for the most part they’re all like yeah kids done actually a pretty good job with all the injuries Like You Gotta Give Them props and M fans like no this is the worst act terrorism of all time what’s happening

In Dallas on the sideline can’t believe he’s not playing omx Prosper more well there’s been times like can omx just get out there but no both you and I both have have at certain certain times this season have done that but it’s not like the most egregious decision ever I just

Wish that he would do it there was one moment with Lively though that I was really watching because this is something I was talking to Tim KO about before the game is that what are they going to do with Lively or Gafford when the Suns go small and 917 left in the

Third quarter the Mavs going on a 1 15 run to start the third it was like an amazing run hitting threes all over the place Phoenix goes small they go ktie at the five and then Lively stays in the game and he stays in for like 2 minutes

He got an offensive rebound you know there a couple of positive things here and there but on defense I was watching him specifically on defense because I because I really want to know what they’re going to do with these two bigs when teams go smaller and they go all

Switching and they go all like anybody can dribble and all that and Lively just kind of on defense hung around the free throw line and was just kind of like floating in between and then when they needed somebody to rotate over he was kind of going but then Luca was kind of

Going too it was a real mess and I really think that kid just wanted to see a couple minutes of what that would look like and I think he found I think he saw what he what he you know needed to see and then didn’t play Lively basically

The rest of the game because the Suns just kept going small in that and so I’m just I’m curious if they keep doing if they keep trying that in the future or what happens with it but I was just I was really watching to see how he would

Handle that well that that’s the part of having a rookie and that’s what the big criticism is yeah I mean that’s tough for any Center playing this is a really good small ball unit for the Suns like it’s statistically really really good so um it’s a tough cover for anybody which

I thought Gafford actually did pretty good A good job when he was out there but defensively like on the perimeter he had some nice plays against KD some really smart double teams and stuff um but uh yeah I mean it’s part of having a rookie Center and like you said you know

That’s that’s the part that is hard for us fans to really grasp is I’ve said this before is it’s like it’s a process coaches GMS they look at this stuff as a process not necessarily game to game they want to see the things play out on

The court they want to you know have film that they can study and stuff that they can work on in practice and when you it happens in lifetime you’re like what the hell’s going on this sucks but you know you just got to trust the

Process I guess with Jason kid it was a it was a I thought it was a decent outing for lively even though he didn’t finish the game he didn’t play a whole lot I thought he did some solid things he had three offensive rebounds he had

An assist he had a couple block shots at The Rim like he had he had some really good moments in this game and so coming up I want to talk about Lively and PJ and Gafford and some of these guys in a playoff atmosphere what do we see from

And if you’re watching on YouTube they have lowered the screen all the way to the ground looks sick uh it’s like I can almost see the top of it at this point now um but yeah they’ve lowered the the middle the middle screen all the way to

The floor I haven’t seen them do that very often because normally they’re changing over to a hockey rank but they’re not doing it right now Mavs get the win they win the tiebreaker against the Suns and we got to we got to kind of feel a playoff atmosphere it felt I

Wouldn’t say it was a playoff atmosphere it was close it was close and like everybody was hanging on every minute all the fans were were cheering there were huge plays there was hard fouls There Was You know guys were playing defense the difference between watching the All-Star game as like the last

Basketball game that I just watched to this game was just so completely different uh what did you see from just the Mavs in an atmosphere like that yeah I love the I thought the Vibes were great it did I mean this is the biggest game of the season uh up until this

Point just in terms of yeah you know especially this has been festering this is why this is a conversation from a different day but the NBA shortening the schedule and spacing games out would be kind of beneficial because you’re kind of sitting on this game for a week and

You’re thinking about it Suns verus Mavs first game out of the All-Star break nationally televised you know the seating implications the Rivalry and yeah it lived up to every minute and uh the Mavs I mean this team is built we we we even said this last year when they

Were struggling at the end was like well they are built for the playoffs but you know um they’re not gonna make it because they’re terrible but if they made it they’d be kind of interesting and that’s that’s how this team is we know that Kyrie and Luca will step

Up and they did they completely did yeah like that that’s something that the Mavs don’t have to worry about will will the Stars step up in the playoffs I think you have to worry about that with the Timberwolves the number one seed in the west with Carl Anthony towns what’s he

Going to do in the playoffs that’s like a huge question they have to ask what is Jaylen Williams of the Thunder going to do in a playoff setting even yeah even Shay we haven’t seen and so that’s something you do not have to question with the map y Pelicans kind of same

Thing all the teams it feels like ahead of them you don’t have to worry about and now you know with the Mavs you don’t have to worry about that that problem at all um I liked what I saw from Lively in this playoff atmosphere in like the

Decisions that he made it didn’t seem like he was rushed it didn’t feel like he was you know in a spot where he’s just like Deering a headlights oh my God I can’t believe how insane this is his his poise and all that is just so great

Again he only played he just played under 16 minutes but I liked what I saw as like a sign of all right if they do need him in in a certain playoff setting maybe it’s not against the Suns but maybe it’s you know Kings or somebody

Else like that that he could play yeah like I mean it he didn’t play a lot it was just a tough matchup for him like it’s not like he did anything bad he just was you know a difficult just a difficult match up for a center of his

Skill set and just a rookie Center too on top of that it absolutely was the new guys we talked about earlier I thought he I mean he closed the game he played 30 minutes which was third on third on the he was third on the team in minutes

He played the third most minutes which is kind of what I expect from him at this point you can just leave him out there and play I think he would have played more but he had three early fouls in like the first quarter and a half and

So he got taken out hit a couple of Threes he was confident in his threes that’s something we’re really watching he attacked off the dribble a couple times there was twice he attacked K KD off the dribble just just because he was mad at him you know and like those those

I think we can do away with but other than that I thought he made you know good decisions and like I thought he played pretty well yeah his he he’s GNA be fine I’m I’m pretty confident in him and defense is one of those things that that kind of that kind of travels

Offense would be the one that I’d be a little bit worried about for guys and the decision- making and rushing shots and just you know being thrown off of the Rhythm defense though usually you can lock in on that end and I think everything will work out on the other

End yeah Josh Green started in this game played 25 minutes he closed kind of here and there three of five from three nine points five assists for him two Steals and he had an offensive rebound that was absolutely massive in this game it it just like he grabbed it from you know

Underneath the rim and he just does this little extra stuff and I I saw in this game where he just thought man it’s so great to have a glue guy like that that he can just kind of fill in little gaps here and there and the Mavs needed a guy

To hit a couple of big threes and he was the one yeah he hit some big big shots and he had a terrible start to the game I mean just being honest and he he saw some moments where was like all right hit that that little fast break when it

Was Josh green and PJ Wasington you can just tell I mean because the game was kind of over at that point I think it was like 12 points with like 330 left so you felt pretty good about your chances to win and you could just tell Josh cre

Wanted to send the building into an absolute frenzy with that lob to PJ but it was like it was a terrible it was like it was a bad decision it was just a really bad pass but he had that he had that other one I think it was in the

First half where he was he was go he was driving transition and he and he was going up against like three sons at the same time and I thought there’s no way he’s getting this shot off and all of a sudden it goes off the backboard like a

Real shot didn’t go in but I was like man he could have just stopped and turned around and and like slowed it up but but yeah he had a couple of moments in transition but as long as they’re pushing they got to P like you got to

Push in transition so I think we’re going to talk about him and his transition attempts the same way we talk about Tim and his like crazy threes like you got to just keep taking them you got like if you’re giving that shot and if you’re giv that transition opportunity

You’ve got to take it just to put pressure on the defense well here’s the thing too if you’re going to ask a guy to hey play defense for us and you’re probably going to guard if we’re playing a a team with a good guard you’re probably gonna end up guarding that guy

For most of the game you gota let them do some stuff offensively like that’s just that’s how it works in the sport you know you can’t just have these guys go out there hey we don’t know if you’re gonna touch the ball once tonight good luck like you gotta you gotta let these
