Done this we should like it’s the ongoing discussion amongst Jazz fans and right now the easy answer is well look what Oklahoma City did right Oklahoma City completely busted on a draft or they took poesy who they’ve waved they semi- missed on a draft or they drafted

Trey man who they’ve now traded and Josh giddy who they’ll likely trade and then they nailed it they hit Chad holgren and Jaylen Williams who are stars and they now have three stars in Shay Guild Alexander who they traded for Chad Holm and Jaylen Williams and they’ve done a bunch of things right

They deserve it ton of credit and they are the number one kind of team that everyone uses as their model for saying you should tank and the draft is the answer well let’s look at the Orlando Magic for a second because this is crazy and stunning and the next time someone

Tells you we should tank you should ask them about the Orlando Magic so the Orlando Magic in the last 11 years have had seven top six picks the Orlando Magic in the last 11 years have played in two first round playoff series won game one of each of them and lost the

Next four and that’s it in 2012 after Stan Van Gundy was Orlando’s head coach they traded Dwight Howard and started a rebuild and over the next six years they broke 30 wins once in 18 1819 with a team of Aaron Gordon Jonathan Isaac Evan forier Nicola vuvi they made the playoffs in two

Series in a row and then they bailed on that and they’ve Lo went 21 and 51 in the so they would have lost 60 in the 70 win 72 game series or close to it they then lost 60 22 and 60 then they went 34

And 48 and now they’re 33 and 26 and currently in the play in but with half game out of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs so they win tonight they’re they actually could jump up to five or six and they’re making great in so in a pret started in

2012 here in 2024 they might finally have some pieces to do things because it’s worked well for but if you so they’re incompetent right they’re they’re horrendous they’re incompetent they’ve done they’ve made mistakes but this is a little bit of my Detroit story they haven’t made a lot of mistakes

Let’s walk through their draft history and here’s my rule on when you look at drafts you can’t go 16 Picks later you can but it’s just you’re kind of cherry-picking so who did they pick and then what were like the next five or six picks okay so they got Victor Oladipo in

The second pick of the 2013 draft is when this process starts the first pick was Anthony Bennett turned out to be the one of the worst number one picks of all time and then the guys drafted afterwards were Otto Porter Jr Cody Zeller Alex lender Lind noell and Ben McLemore and then

Cavius calwell pop was a really bad draft it’s the draft everyone is fearful that this draft is it’s also a draft that had Giannis at 15 Kelly lenck at 13 and Rudy goar at 27 so it eventually turned out but the top of this draft was terrible

And they took the best player Victor Oladipo so they did that one right we go to 2014 they have the fourth pick of the draft this is the draft where everyone was supposed to be amazing we’re supposed to to tank and Andrew Wiggins went one Jabari Parker

Went two Joel embiid went three and Orlando’s sitting at four and here are the next players taken Dante exom Aaron Gordon’s who they took Dante exom Marcus Smart Julius Randall Nick stalis Noah vonle Aaron Gordon’s not an awful pick there maybe Julius randles is who you should have

Taken I guess I mean he averages 19 points a game but he’s got a lot of flaws too Aaron Gordon was not a terrible pick there they trade for Alfred Payton who turns out to be terrible never could shoot shot 29% as a point guard never kind of after eight years it’s

Over that’s probably a suspect move that they traded for Alfred Payton Dario sarich was their pick at 12 they traded up in the draft to go get Payton I I don’t know that pton was wrong but like Zack LaVine was still on the board there that wasn’t a great move particularly to

Give up draft capital okay but I’m not sure that Aaron Gordon was like super horrendous then they draft Mario honia in the fifth pick they’re terrible my gosh how do you draft Mario honia in the fifth pick it’s an awful pick he turns out to be a bust he plays 330 games in

The NBA averages seven points it’s a total disaster here are the next picks the next pick’s after Mario honia Willie colly Stein Emanuel moodier Stanley Johnson Frank kamsky and Justice Winslow they all busted none of those became viable rotation NBA players none of them Chris bingos was the pick before

Orando just end up in the wrong spot Mario Z is a terrible pick in the fifth pick of the draft so is the six seventh eth ninth and 10th picks of that draft now as is the case with drafts Miles Turner at 11 was pretty good Devon Booker at 13’s pretty good

Like there are some players so there suddenly three years into being terrible they have Victor olad on Aaron Gordon they’ve done fine but they’re just fine now they’ve missed on hono they made a trade they trade the 16th in the 16th draft they make a mistake they trade their

Pick along with Victor Oladipo to okah who’s injured at this point to Oklahoma City for Serge Ibaka who’s kind of done and they give up their pick is Dada sabonis so that that one’s pretty painful you can’t make a lot of mistakes here because the margin is so small

2017 they draft Jonathan Isaac was a six pick Lowry goes seven then it’s Frank Nina Dennis Smith Jr Zack Collins Malik Monk and luk before Donovan goes 13 sure you could have should have taken Donovan but you’re six to 13 that’s a wide range and Jonathan Isaac Franklin

Was supposed to be really really good he’s torn his ACL three times like that’s I I guess your medical should have known that somehow and Lowry’s a better pick but feels like that one’s hard to criticize Jason Tatum dearon Fox the picks ahead of them I’m being a little generous but not

Too generous I mean J Isaac was really really good he’s supposed to be defensive player of the year he’s going to be jiren Jackson Jr if he doesn’t get hurt okay so at this point they literally have not they they finally they still have not made the playoffs they traded

Dwight Howard in 2012 and they go six years without 30 six years they break 30 wins once and out of it they have Victor Oladipo Aaron Gordon Mario honia Jonathan Isaac Mo bomba is the next pick oops okay this is a mistake they take Mo bomba sixth Wendell

Carter seven Colin seon’s eight Kevin Knox is nine Mel Bridges is 10 and Shay is 11 oops they blew that one now also to their bad luck it was like a five player draft DeAndre Aton Marvin Bagley Luca donic jiren Jackson Jr and Trey young were the five previous

Picks and it definitely fell off the map at that point Shay turns out to be great Collins really good now wasn’t at his first stop Wendell Carter Jr’s been moved Kevin Knox M good Mel Bridges Mel Bridges at 10 would have been a nice pick but that so they miss now they’re

Actually a playoff team they’ve kind of worked their way they made a bunch of other deals they’re a playoff team and they take a Ki in the 16th pick of the draft is coming off an ACL at Auburn it makes some sense and frankly the next player the players drafted around him

Were Romeo Lankford Dibo out of Detroit Oki nikil Alexander Walker Bazi Luca Sonic and mat thel okay okay not a great pick but frankly only nil Alexander Walker played more minutes so I’m not gonna kill him for it 2020 they draft Cole Anthony who’s actually pretty good they draft Cole Anthony with the

15th pick the next pick Isaiah Stewart povi Josh Green sadique Bay precious Chua Tyrese Maxi goes 21 would have been nice if you’d seen that but Cole Anthony’s played more minutes than all those guys but Sadiq Bay and Tyrese Maxi okay it would have been nice if you’d see you got to really

Hit and now they go two years in the playoffs where they go four and out five games and out and they rebuild it again and start Drafting and they draft Jaylen Suggs with the fifth pick of the draft and they tra and they draft fron Vagner in the eighth now that’s a hit

That’s what you’ve got to do so after one two three four five six seven eight nine drafts they finally get a hit like a hit hit fron vogner’s the right pick Warriors should have taken him seventh Oklahoma City should have taken him sixth Orlando should have taken him

Fifth they took Jaylen Suggs he’s been fine then they get the number one pick of the draft and to their credit with a lot of talk and everything else going on they take Paulo banko they will turn out where they maybe should have taken Chad holgren but there was Jabari Smith talking the

Top top and all that and they hit relatively I’m not a huge fan on 44% shooting and 32% three-point shooting so I’m still I know he’s an Allstar I’m still waiting on that one I’m not entirely sure it’s not Carmelo Anthony and then last year they draft

Anthony black with a six pick of the draft in wiie he’s shooting way better from three than any of us expected 37% he’s big and tall at a point guard might have a chance but they started this process in 2012 and they’ve played 10 playoff games

And won two of them trying to live on the draft be careful so the next time somebody talks to you about oh we should be taking we should be this and that talk to them about Orlando in seven top six picks in the last 11 years and when they say well

They just don’t know how to draft go look at them it’s not that simple all right I think a necessary reality check could be wrong and some really good signs defensively come as we’re just getting started here on lock on Jazz today today’s show is brought to you by

Got a I got a caveat here at the end that we had to be better than the Warriors who are 23 and 25 the rest of the way and better than the Lakers the rest of the way and that we were going to beat out one of

Them in all likelihood so we could play a single playing game on the road that’s really truly the truth of what was at stake I know that sucks but that’s true maybe we win that game and win maybe win another one on the road unlikely I don’t

Think it’s really been done yet and then we go play in the playoffs maybe but that’s kind of where we were now if your answer that is I don’t care I just want competitive games every night it’s more fun for me on a given night if we win

And if we lose and if we can play better I’m with you 100 per. but if you’re a franchise standpoint you’re Justin and Danny and Ryan and you’re trying to make a decision you’re part your decision is okay what are we really going to get

Done this year are we going to be better than the Warriors and the Lakers the rest of the way and are we really going to get 10th and if we get 10th what is 10th okay now if your answer is I don’t care I follow this team like a sitcom on

Going to get burned he go beat on some back door Cuts he’ll get beat on some stuff and but the you’re trying to have him make an impact defensively and that’s really what we should be watching every night with Taylor Hendricks it should not be whether he’s shooting 28

Or 38% from three it should not be whether he made a play off to bounce it should we already can see the springy athletic game he’s got to use his athleticism to get himself involved I think would be probably the other one will would say that he’d like to see out

Of Taylor so as we have Taylor Hendrick’s goals here it’s not that he’s going to bust out 20 I actually think if you want a rookie who’s going to score 20 it could be Bryce sensal like I there could be a night where sensal gets some shots

Starts getting hot and and gets a bunch of looks and gets hot he’s got that in his game um but I think what you are looking for is whether or not you can get Taylor Hendrick to just defend and have an impact defensively and tonight he’s probably going up against Vagner

Bonero bonero is illness questionable but I think he’ll play um and bonero averages 23 and Vagner averages 21 like these guys are really good bonero is physical and is just bullying you he doesn’t have very good shooting touch from the outside so can you like prevent

Him from getting where he wants to and vogner’s a little bit more crafty can you stay out of foul trouble can you kind of keep your body between him and the basket while he’s doing all the stepping up and unders and all those kind of things these are two very
