  1. Banton continues to look awesome. If that three can become legit with his height and handle… I’m drooling just thinking about it.

Anyway, I’m going to enjoy this win as much as I can cause our schedule looks like hell for the rest of the season.

Fun bounce back game where everyone got involved.

Banton is such a fun player. Ashton’s a dawg. Kris made some shots, and played some solid defense. Rupert finally got to see the floor again, and looked solid.

And we get to play the Grizzlies again tomorrow? Fuck yeah.

Hagans with the pure raw dog/36 showing tonight

Here are my thoughts on this game:

    Positives:

    * Dalano Banton: I don’t sure if he’s a rotation player on a truly good team, but his combination of length, size, ballhandling, and playmaking/feel is SO intriguing. Getting him for free is exactly the kind of transaction we should be doing in the early stages of our rebuild. I know he hasn’t shot the ball well in his entire career so I shouldn’t really be too hopeful, but he hit a stepback and a pull-up three today and his shot doesn’t mechanically look broken…if he can add some semblance of a consistent jumpshot he’ll be a really nice player. I really loved what I saw from him tonight in transition and on defense too.
    * Team defense: I know it’s the Grizzlies who are basically a G league team with no chemistry or cohesion, so everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, our defense looked genuinely good today, and the Grizzlies really couldn’t get anything going the entire game, constantly turning the ball over and running bad offense.
    * I like what I saw from Kris Murray. I’ve said in my previous game recaps that I’m SO impressed by his anticipation on defense – most of his rotations are super crisp and on time, and he uses his length very well defensively. I don’t think he’s a lockdown 1v1 defender, but he has an innate ability to be in the right place in the right time, which is super valuable in today’s NBA. The only difference today versus some of his other recent games is that his shots actually went down. This will probably be his swing skill that determines whether or not he will become a good NBA player, because he has everything else except the shooting (which is weird, since he was supposed to be a good shooter coming out of college).
    * Reath had a terrible start to the game but stayed confident and didn’t stop shooting his shots and ended up with a nice stat line. Good for him.
    * Hagans probably had the best game of his career. He was a menace defensively and forced a lot of turnovers with his energy, had a couple nice finishes at the rim, and had a couple good passes too.
    * Jabari had a bunch of nice finishes and had some great hustle plays – normal Jabari things. I like that he’s taking jumpshots without hesitation too.
    * Shout out to Grant for playing within the flow of the offense and not forcing a bunch of terrible ISOs. In a game like this with a bunch of G leaguers, I feel like he sometimes takes it upon himself to score the ball and tries to do too much (like that one game against the Pistons). With his teammates mostly playing well today, it’s nice that he took a back seat and didn’t force too much.

    Negatives:

    * Ant has been in an extended shooting slump over the ~10 games or so, and tonight was no exception. Like Grant, he didn’t force up a ton of bad shots (only 9 FGA) and did a good job (by his standards) of running the offense with 8 assists (and was still generating a bunch of open shots for his teammates with the threat of his shooting). But he’s at his best when he’s scoring the ball, and he’s been ice cold lately.
    * I still think our offense looks unnecessarily ugly and stagnant when we aren’t able to run out in transition. Some of it is because we are so young and inexperienced, but I also think our offensive strategy is just fundamentally unsound at times.
    * I know he had a decent statline, but I really dislike watching Moses Brown play. He has bad hands, and defensively he completely lacks the agility, coordination, and instincts to make an impact – he’s basically a walking layup line every time he’s out there. I get why he’s playing (and he didn’t even play that badly today), but he doesn’t remotely look like an NBA player to me.

We just had to be winless in February lol

  8. thematthampton

We needed this one fellas … in a long season, I’m smiling tonight

  9. BunkHammer

All we have to now is win out and we’ll be in the thick of the playoffs

  10. waterkisser

Dalano Banton is extremely French Canadian and I love it.

Just an all around fun game. Man that felt good

  12. Trick_Weapon

This is the kind of game where I feel better about the rebuild.

Banton, Murray, Walker, and Rupes all look like they can play.

Walker has less upside, but you need a guy like him to scrap.

Banton is worst case a great 3rd PG, but the types of lineups we can run with him are crazy.

I love the Mr. Perfect nickname. He plays so solid and is a fantastic off-ball defender. He just needs to be able to shoot.

Rupes has the highest upside. He is clearly improving and developing. His shot is solid, he was lockdown on ball defense. He has a lot to improve on offensive feel and off ball positioning, but I see his floor as an energy bunny off the bench.

All of these guys fit great with Scoot to boot!

  13. Wagonlance

I have a dream. For the rest of the season, use these guys as the regular rotation: Reath, Badji, Camara, Walker, Banton, Murray, Sharpe, Henderson. They might lose. They might get blown out some nights. OTOH, I bet they would play hard and improve. We might actually see something to be excited about.

I know…even if they were all healthy, it would never happen. They would still play the vets as much as possible cuz …reasons.
