Davion Mitchell & Coach Brown | Postgame Pressers 3.1.24
Watching uh when you’re watching Malik do do what he did in in the second half just what’s it like uh on the bench among his teammates like what what’s it like watching that happen for him um um I mean man Malik is an amazing player uh he does everything for us um I
Mean he gets it done like he tries def defensively that’s why one thing I like about Malik he’s he’s not just offensive player um he try he tries as hard as on defense he get stops for us he get assists I mean he kind of does
Everything he’s like our our star on our team so I mean it was amazing to see um he kind of took over that game for us to get that win Keon had a bunch of steals in a block you scored and and shot efficiently um just can you speak to
What you guys did in in dear’s absence tonight yeah I mean shout out to Keon for I mean staying ready uh he hasn’t played in in a long time I mean he came out and and set the tone for us I mean for us to win this game um throughout
The whole game we kind of picked up from I mean his his pressure defensively and we all kind of picked up from him so I mean shout out to him for being ready and staying ready was it a player’s only meeting that happened yesterday yes what
What was the message of that I mean it was just saying that we just got to uh come together um we can’t just we can’t just lay down when when teams get going on runs um we can’t just hold our head Downs when we’re not scoring the ball we
Got to play harder and I think that’s what we did tonight Davon for you guys to get a win like this against the number one seed on the road at this point in the season you know knowing how how tough this final stretch is going to be how much of a
Statement win do you think this is for the group and how much confidence do you think it will give you guys going forward yeah I mean it’s real big uh I mean Trey said it in our um our meeting after the G after we won the game and he
Said it’s a real big statement game especially I mean coming here is is definitely hard to play here um they a really good team I mean they’ve been winning All Season defensively they the number one defense in the NBA so we just tried to try to get out and run um said
And and talked about and and did the things we did in our player meeting I think we we was been aggressive um we was running the floor and we was playing for one another all so you’re missing dear and and obviously Malik stepped up but that
The whole bench came off too what was was the second uh unit doing that was working so well I think we always just being aggressive uh we just try to stay running we know teams don’t like to run with us um that’s kind of like our
Calling card we like to run we got speed on our team so I think that’s what we did uh we executed tonight um I think defensively we got like seven stops in a row at the end to help us win that game and I think we just did a really good
Job playing together I tell you what that it was a great win uh uh for us on the road especially coming off to off off the loss in Denver and and even back to Miami and and you know I’ve talked about our identity well beginning of the year
Quite a bit you know we want to play fast we want to play physical and we want to play together you know and um I I thought tonight we did a good job of playing fast we had 19 fast break points um which was really good against this
Team uh but I thought our level of physicality really showed tonight uh we were we were extremely physical on on both uh uh in both halves and you know one level one way to show it was there were 11 50/50 balls out there and we came up
With eight of them for us that is that’s huge um you know we were trying to put bodies on bodies all night we had six stops in a row in overtime to end the game you know we weren’t efficient from the free throw line obviously and we haven’t been efficient from the free
Throw line throughout the course of year so we have to have a level of physicality in order to win games cuz we’re not going to be able to score 125 points every game and our guys brought it tonight a lot of different guys did I thought daveon was really good
Defensively uh he was great for us offensively we told him to be aggressive and he was aggressive we even called his number a couple of times in some plays sets um I thought HB was uh good defensively cat is a hard hard cover and
He’s got HP by about 5 in and so he was really good with his level of physicality um you know you talk about Keon Keon Keon’s level of physicality was really good he was a defensive player of the game when he came in um and then you know just other things that
Stood out you know they had zero fast break points and our transition defense against Denver was something that we addressed after the game because it wasn’t good so for our guys to come out here and and do what they did in transition just a great job defensively
In transition um like I said we got out we had 19 we always talk about Crash Zone we had multiple guys in the crash Zone that attacked the glass and came up with second possessions and we had 20 22 chance points versus a much bigger team
Tonight which was which huge for us with with the 14 uh offensive rebounds um you know domas domas was fantastic you know with the 21 15 and and eight he was great for us all night uh and then obviously uh mik um you know with fox out we needed to generate points from
Somebody and so for for Malik uh to score 39 points in overtime game for us was huge he he was he was just fantastic offensively uh for us especially down the stretch and speaking on Malik a little bit I mean what’s it like for you
As a coach when when um you you have a guy who you know can cook like that and sort of make your life easier to where you you’re not necessarily having to manufacture offense maybe in the typical ways you would it’s huge you know that the great teams always have you know two
Or three guys like that where sometimes you don’t have to call a play you just say here’s the ball go make a play for yourself or for your teammate teammates and and emik did that and uh uh especially with fox out down the stretch we needed somebody to St
Stand up for us and Malik was the guy that did and the the guys talked about having a players only meeting in in Denver yesterday um just how do you view that as a coach how gratifying is it for for you to see guys take ownership and
Then come out with an effort after that meeting like they had tonight I freaking love it I and I mean I I I I mean this me I’ve been talking internally um to our front office to our coaches even to our team we won’t reach the heights that we can
Reach until you guys take ownership as a head coach you can push and carry the group only so far there’s going to be there’s got to be a point in time from to where it comes from within and they talk to one another and they hold each other accountable and they take
Ownership in whatever the heck is going on in front of them and so for them to have that for the first time ah man I actually went out and had a drink last night it was partly because of that coach you talked about the defensive effort tonight you know coming
Into this game Minnesota was shooting you know up there in the top three in terms of teams and and their three-point efficiency um and you guys came out here and you know kind of kept them under um their their average rate of 39% you kep kept them at 38 big point of emphasis
For your team is being closing out on the three-point shooting and getting better in that area what do you think about um your guys’ performance on that end tonight I thought it was pretty good you know there were a couple of times that we didn’t get to three-point
Shooters get to their bodies like we’re supposed to but for the most part the efforts there and and you know there are a million defensive schemes that you can uh have out there and at the end of the day defense comes out comes down to uh communication effort and the willingness
To cover for one another and if your guys are if your guys are bought into that then it really doesn’t matter schematically what you do because that those three things are going to make up for any areas of uh will break down so I thought our guys were really good uh
Defensively throughout the night speaking of the defense and those uh six stops in a row well I mean a what can you say about the effort there and B what was working for you defensively you know again their size bothered us and um and so we just
Decided to go Zone and um our guys did a great job um bump switching talking uh and then the biggest part is uh knowing when to go go back to man but more importantly boxing out because a team that size when you’re in zone it’s tough
To find bodies at times and give our guys a lot of credit they they they just kept talking and and uh and then when that shot went up you could just see it boom bodies hitting bodies and ball bouncing and us getting to 50-50 ball or
Long rebound so it it’s a lot of fun to watch
