It is time once again to break down a coach ISM what does it mean to play by committee well we’ve seen that the last two outings what it means plus Joe engle’s impact and it’s time to look at the standings every day we’re going to start doing it on today’s locked on

They they help us kind of set the terms for how they want the team to be evaluated and look I I you know I think I know a lot but you know Jo Mosley knows a lot more about basketball than I do I will defer to him and sometimes

Defer to his choices probably much to your sugar in at times um but I I I like to say okay if you’re going to present this as the standard let me spend my time figuring out what the heck that means and repeatedly this year we have

Heard Jamal Mosley say we are a team that will do things by committee Now by committee didn’t mean a lot of things I it’s it’s honestly to me more of a statement of adaptability it’s it’s more fitting in with the team’s overall versatility kick how the team wants to have players and and

People who do everything well um and that’s that is that is part of what the magic try to do you know again they want every they want players who can do everything and so to that point then I think the magic and their focus is usually on saying we

Want not only players who can do everything but we want a team that can form fit whatever the the other team presents us now that does not mean that Pao banero is not your leading scorer every night that does not mean that fron voger is not your leading score every night to a

Certain extent this by committee approach is still very much a developmental thing it’s an understanding of trying to get a young team to learn how to play unselfishly to learn that everybody is going to have their moment and maybe when we get to higher levels and roles have to start being

Defined this by committee approach doesn’t necessarily work um there like with all things there are strengths and shortcomings to everything that these teams are doing to everything that they’re trying to accomplish so again what does it mean to play by committee what is the by committee approach this

Is this is one of the big challenges in trying to assess this magic te well the reason why this byy committee stuff matters is because of nights like the last two nights when you take out a Pao Bano a huge piece that attracts so much attention when you take that player out

How does the team respond and this is what I think Jamal mosy is always getting at is like yes we have this these two great security blankets in Pao and France that they’re going to carry us through a lot of things but we cannot be so wholly reliant on

Them that everyone else just kind of feels comfortable in their roles or everyone can’t Elevate their game to get Elevate their game to get to the next layer to to or Elevate their game to get to where this team ultimately wants to go um this is all part of the

Challenge everyone has to contribute everyone has to have a role I know I’ve said this a million times this year everyone on the roster is going to have their moment on the floor um there will you know hopefully it doesn’t come to that but everyone’s gonna have to step up at some

Point that’s that’s the reality of this league that’s the reality of the NBA an 82 Game season is a long time and that’s what the buy committee approach is getting at it is about everyone being ready when their number is called it is about everyone being ready when the defense presents an

Opportunity to score is is everyone being ready to be aggressive when the time calls for it that’s that is what is at the heart of so many things that the magic are doing that every team is doing and what the magic are trying to teach so yes you know you

Got big games from fron Vagner but fron Vagner does not do every anything alone neither does poo banera they you know they could carry a heavier scoring load they could you know they’re expected to be more aggressive be more assertive create you know suck up attention but they cannot succeed without everyone

Else and so bu committee approach is really saying we want to make sure everybody feels involved that everyone understands they have a role to play and on some nights that role is going to be smaller and some nights that role is going to be bigger this is what they’re getting at

Um as much as again and we’re going to get to the playoffs we’re going to talk playoffs here later in the episode as much as this team is about winning now it is still about growing the group and growing individuals to be better players down

The road as I I I I’m sure you all hate me for saying this this season is not about this season this season is about something bigger the team growing I in a different way this season is about so much more than where they finish in the standing system here it’s about

Understanding and learning and beginning to understand and learn what it’s going to take to win in the playoffs not necessarily for this year this year is you know Scott free learn you know make mistakes but when they’re actually ready to be competitive and it maybe next year you know and maybe this

Year who knows but the magic are trying to teach everyone what part they’re going to have to play and how ready they need to be because you know we could look at this roster already and say for the magic to be successful in the playoffs they’re

Going to need a big game for mooger they’re gonna need a big game from Cole Anthony they’re gonna need a big game from Jonathan is they’re gonna need a big game from Jaylen sugs wendo Carter someone’s going to have to step up because the defense is going to give

Them the opportunity to step up and so all this talk about playing by committee all this talk about understanding how to fill in and do all that it’s preparation for that moment because we don’t know who they’re going to double off of to to get the

Ball out of Poo’s hands jayen sugs he needs to be ready to attack ready to shoot if it’s Anthony black he needs to be ready all this stuff is preparation and again i’ I’ve always credited Jamal Mosley I think he does a great job keeping the bigger picture in mind this

Is what it’s all about and yes we are very much in the thick of that playoff hunt we’re going to get to the standings talk about that a little bit later on we’ll get to Joe Engles though we haven’t talked about the veteran we’ll talk about the impact he’s still making even

Bench players some of the reserves who who make a such a huge impact on this team uh and and the bench has been you know this magic team’s depth has been one of their strengths throughout most of the season if you look at the numbers the starters numbers aren’t that great

As a unit as a lineup especially compared to the bench group why were the Magics struggling for so long is because Bo voger Anthony were both kind of in a slump and the bench units weren’t scoring or defending at nearly the same level now Jonathan Isaac’s healthy MO

Vager is regularly scoring in double digits another good fantasy pick for you by the way uh Cole Anthony starting to shoot a little bit more consistently now we’re seeing that bench really take over and yes I know they were a big part of why the magic gave up that 18-1 run to

The Hawks on Sunday but the bench is a big reason why the magic pulled away from Detroit and had a you know had control of that game they put the screws on Brooklyn in in the third quarter of of of Tuesday’s game the bench is a big

Reason why the magic are are winning basketball games and a guy that I think magic players certainly appreciate and we talk about him because the magic are playing his former team the team that he made famous or made him famous one or the other uh in the Utah Jazz on Thursday um Joe

Engles is still a really impactful player for the seam now his raw numbers don’t tell tell you that story Eng Les is averaging only 4.6 points per game he’s shooting 41 A half% from three but only 2.6 three-pointers per game it’s lowest since his first two years in the

League he’s not taking a lot of Threes um it’s it’s as low as it’s ever been he’s averaging three assists per game and 17.4 minutes per game uh 6.2 assists per 36 minutes Joe Eng Les when he came in we expected him to be a bit of more

Of a volume shooter perhaps I told you all that he’d be a great passer he’s delivered on that he’s just someone that it really feels like he greases the wheel it’s not about how many points he scores when he does get more than 10 points the magic are

Usually in very good shape that means the ball’s moving he’s getting threes because he’s not creating threes for himself he’s getting a lot of catch and shoot threes where he shoots you know 40 plus percent on catch and shoot threes um he’s you know you get him a shot he’s

Going to make it but Eng Les has been a guy that just makes everybody work around him and you can still see that in the onoff numbers the magic have a plus 4.1 net rating with les on the floor that includes a rotation player best 11

16.6 offensive rting when Eng Les is on the floor the magic have a 11 16.6 offensive rate now that is not typically with the lineup he is most used with the lineup that he’s most used with is a full bench lineup Cole Anthony Joe Engles um let me just make Jonathan

Isaac Bo vogner and I believe and Gary Harris they’re plus 4.9 net rating with a 101.8 defense uh defensive rating um so they’re about 106 offensive rating that that lineup doesn’t have a lot of creators doesn’t have a lot of guys that get downhill but they defend like crazy

And Jonathan Isaac is obviously a big reason why for that you know as much as as if if you need to fix an offensive lineup the joke should still be put Joe Engles in it he’ll usually make it better just because he has some gravity as a shooter and obviously he’s a great

Shooter uh he’s going to be a great decision maker and passer kind of kind of organizing your offense he’s a veteran you know magic really trusts him on that front um if you need to fix something defensively you throw Jonathan Isaac into it and Jonathan Isaac’s just

Going to be a black hole sucking in light and any type of offense that the other team might have um Eng Les Isles has been really good and again the counting stats don’t tell you this maybe the magic need a little bit more from the counting stats maybe the

Magic for their money or whatever it’s worth maybe the magic need a little bit more on that front um they have been seemingly much more careful with his minutes uh his minutes have gone down since returning from the the ankle injury earlier earlier in Jan in the

Year um a lot of that is because they just got a lot of guys they’re trying to play like they’re trying to get Anthony black in the rotation and so that’s eating into Engles minutes they want you know they have a 10-man rotation really an 11 man rotation if you count black um

And they want to make sure Vagner is with that second unit so that he can attack downhill they have a Creator on the floor uh a dribble Creator on the floor because you know Eng Les will pass if you get open um maybe Engles isn’t the exact piece

The magic name um that’s that’s maybe what we’re trying to say or what the conclusion is but for what Engles is and who he is he still has a lot of power and still helps his team tremendously he is still a great floor spacer he is still one of the few

Players on this team with gravity that play that other teams know they cannot leave and even then they cannot leave be him because he will pass his way out of it he will pass to an open man if you are late getting to him or if you’re or

Or if you’re out of out of position Engles makes an impact despite not scoring despite not having such a heavy usage rate and that part is really big it’s huge it’s humongous for this team that he’s able to do that and that is that is what the magic are hoping to

Get out of him obviously that’s what the magic need to get out of him and that’s all the magic could have asked for from him he he has been a great addition to this team obviously he’s good in the locker room you know they all call him Grandpa Joe

Um uh he he’s he’s a great addition to this team they need the veteran boys you see him talking on the bench with players with with Jamal Mosley he is going to be valuable in the playoffs even if he’s not playing he’s going to be valuable you need guys like him in

The locker room as much as you need him on the floor he’s helped this team on the floor too and it’s important to recognize that role he plays even if the scoring numbers don’t always completely back it back it up or or tell you the impact that he’s having again it’s the by

Committee approach everyone has a part to play for this team no one understands that more than Joe Engles we are in March or almost in March leap year um we’re almost in March so it I don’t think we need to do this every day but we’re GNA start more

Big and not big like oh we already got to be in playoff mode and be perfect big is in they all mean something and we’re getting better and we’re working toward that ultimate goal coming up in about a month in in in a month and a half uh when the playoffs actually begin

It’s it’s gonna be a fun ride kids it’s it’s gonna be a lot of fun and so you know last night the magic got the big win obviously Philadelphia lost to Boston uh Miami played Portland late they ended up come back to win that game Indiana lost to New Orleans the

Standings got all jumbled up and so we’re gonna spend time here I think regularly breaking down the standings and talking about where we sit um we should be looking at the standings almost every day um we did have one result Indiana beat New Orleans on uh I

Forget who Indiana played the other day but Indiana beat New Orleans on Wednesday so they they they picked up a win but here’s where the standings are at um we’re going to start with fourth in New York New York is 35 and 24 uh Miami is sitting behind them game

In a halfback um at 33 and 25 Philadelphia’s tied with them for six at 33 and 25 Indiana tied in the standings with you know they played two more games at 34 and 26 Orlando a half game back at them at 33 and 26 anded just for fun the

Magic lead the Chicago B by five games for ninth as we sit here today the Magic’s magic number to clinch a play a a postseason spot to clinch at least being the 10 seed the Brooklyn Nets are 22 and 36 their best record is 46 and

36 the Magic The Magic clinch a playoff spot their magic number is 14 14 magic any combination of 14 magic wins or 14 Brooklyn losses and the Orlando Magic are going to the postseason that number is going to dwindle very very fast um very very fast so you know and and the

Magic number to clinch the 78 game is 18 the M we will be celebrating a postseason birth here very very soon the Boston Celtics actually are the we the first team to clinch a postseason birth on uh on uh on on Wednesday so we’re going to start seeing some teams punch

Their tickets to the postseason but where we’re really focused Orlando Trails the New York Knicks for the fourth seed by two games they Trail the Miami Heat for the fifth seed by a half game five six seven eight are separated by a half game and look it’s not going

To change very much uh in this next stretch the magic very much yeah they don’t control their own destiny I think that you know they’re going to need some help and and they’re going to need some big wins but the magic very much control where they’re going to finish and

Whether they stay in this race they are in the race they’re in the group they’re in the pelaton they’re everyone’s jogging and right now the magic are picking up steam they’re seven and three in their last 10 Philadelphia’s three and seven by the way uh they’ve made up

Major ground on both the Sixers and Knicks Miami’s eight and2 in their last 10 they’re on a five-game winning streak they played Denver uh on Thursday um coming off a blowout win over the Kings at home Indiana 7 and3 Orlando s and three Philadelphia and New York are aged

Three and seven as they deal with their injuries these teams are picking up speed and the Orlando is obviously in a piece of the schedule that we’ve been waiting for that they can pick up a lot of wins here’s the Magic schedule coming up um we’re in the stretch right now of

Seven games against teams with losing records the first one was against Detroit that was a win second one against Atlanta that’s a loss Tuesday against Brooklyn that was a win they play Utah Thursday night tonight they play Detroit again on Sunday and look Detroit’s playing a lot better uh

You I want to give Detroit their credit you know they’re they’re playing a whole lot better very tough loss to the Knicks very tough loss to the magic big win over Chicago they’re they’re they’re playing a lot better so don’t sleep on them and don’t sleep on any of these

Teams then the magic go to Charlotte Charlotte is currently 15 and 43 they’re five and five in their last 10 they’ve been playing a lot better since the trade deadline but they just lost by 50 to Milwaukee um and then they play at Washington on a back toback Washington

Loses over the last 12 um and then come probably the two biggest games left on the schedule one week from Friday the magic play the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden it does not appear that ogj noobi is gonna be back does not appear certainly Julius Randle is not

Gonna be back um but the magic obviously have a three-oh Ser season series lead over the next they sweep That season series they pick up a game all of a sudden the four seed comes into play and then next Sunday I cannot stress this enough fill the Kia Center one week from

Sunday fill that building up the Orlando Magic take on the Indiana Pacers their final game against the Pacers Orlando’s already won that season series they beat them twice in Indianapolis be sweep That season series get a big win you pick up a game on the standings you probably seesaw into the

Lead against Indiana um things certainly start to look very very up for Orlando we will assess and talk about the schedule again when we get out from the other side of this of this seven game stretch because Orlando still has the easiest remaining schedule by opponent win percentage in the league they’re 23

Games remaining they got one against Washington again that’s next Wednesday one against Detroit that’s Sunday three against Charlotte one of them comes next Tuesday uh one against Portland one against Memphis and then two against Toronto those games are going to go by very very quickly by the time we get to

The end of March um you know so we get to the end of March that’s the end of that eight game homeand um they’ll have one game left against Charlotte uh there Port the game against Portland ends the home stand April’s going to be much tougher so the goal for the magic right

Now is undoubtedly clean up right now clean up they needed to go five- two at minimum during the seven game stretch they already took took one loss they need to take care of their business certainly at the Kia Center and take care of their business heading into next week heading

Into those two again gantu in games next weekend next Friday at New York at the Garden next Sunday against Indiana fill the Kia Center for that game I I I’m going to repeat that fill the Kia Center for that game next Sunday at Indiana that game needs to be a playoff

Atmosphere I I I want I I will Hammer this home I’m going to make sure you have the date uh because that it is it is so important March 3 not March 3D March 10th March 10th skip your Oscar Party Rick Springfields at Epcot skip that March

10th the Indiana Pacers taking on the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center that needs to be a playoff atmosphere we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves though right now the magic just have to take care of their business beating the Jazz and look the Jazz are a solid team they they they’ve been

Playing a little bit better uh they are three and seven in their last 10 no so they’re they’ve started to fade a little bit they’re four games back at the Lakers the Lakers won tonight so they’re now four and a half games back at the Lakers for 10 their playoff hopes are

Fading um they got to take care of their business they got to take care of their business they got to sweep this home stand maybe pick up those two wins on the road again back Tob backs are tough but no excuses to lose Washington um they they control so much of their

Destiny they control so much of what they can accomplish they just got to do it like they just got to get the job done at this point and we’ll see if they can we’ll see if they end up doing that I want to thank you all again for listening to
